Tried out a San Antonio staple, Puffy Tacos at this local spot! Tried one picadillo (seasoned ground beef and potatoes) and one chicken. I actually enjoyed the light, crunchy texture of the puffy taco shell albeit the meat being somewhat under seasoned but the ambiance was very inviting and the service staff was very prompt and friendly. read more

I visited Nicha's for the first time in a long time. They give you a more-than-generous amount of chips which is great! Those chips are so light and flaky, it's easy to forget you've eaten a whole tortilla once you've had 4! We asked for hotter salsa and they delivered. My green enchilada plate was very tasty. I do wish it came with more rice, but not really a problem. We ordered a tampiqueña plate to go, which cost about $25, and we should have checked the bag when we received it because they forgot the rice, beans, and enchilada that was supposed to come with the plate. But Nicha's made it right and we were able to go by later and pick up an enchilada plate, so that was good of them. I'm a happy customer! read more

Recently visited this place to celebrate my wife's cousin's high school graduation. I was aware of the place but never had stepped inside. It had several seating areas including a bar and party room. Since we were a large group, we had a bit of a wait as there was only one large table to accommodate us. The place was very busy as the were other patrons waiting. Due to the long wait, we proceeded to check out the bar area. I order a Dos X. Since it was going to be awhile and we were hungry, the bartender offered us chips and salsa. Our table was finally ready, and we were seated. Unbeknownst to me was they offered a buffet. It made more fiscal sense to order the buffet as it was only slightly higher than their plates. The buffet had a good of variety to choose from, including American breakfast foods too. The highlights from the buffet were the barbacoa, carne guisada, puero roja. The rice and beans were nothing special, and the enchiladas were mid. They had really good tortillas. Despite the size of our group, our waitress did a really good job of taking care of us. I definitely got my money's worth as I did not have to eat the rest of the day. I will likely visit this place again at some point. read more

No matter if we go through the drive-through or eat at the restaurant, the service is always great. Visited this place as I was looking for some good Mexican food after living outside of Texas for over 2 years now. The service was wonderful and the server really took her time to make us feel welcome and even gave us tortilla soup as a starter for being our first time at Nichas. Yummy! The cheese enchiladas were amazing! They served us free soup at first and it warmed my heart! I had the cheese enchiladas with Charro bean, rice and carne guisada. They were so delicious and the freshly made flour tortillas was soft and delicious. My Mexican coke was the finishing touch that completed my home made meal! Had a large family party on a Sunday. We waited 20 minutes. We had margaritas at the bar. Caution with the margaritas with a beer. No holder- and beer can fall out! Our reason we love this restaurant is for the puffy tacos!! Memories of childhood outings. Perfect crisp, taco meat just the right spice with lettuce, tomato's and cheese. Great tasting food and excellent service for a weekend lunch. Still the same as when I ate here years ago and same quality as other locations I've visited. The chips and salsa were also fresh and delicious. Weekend brunch buffet was available but I opted to order from the menu. Pricing runs $13-18. My guests had it for the first time and they were very happy. I would label this a solid Tex Mex, leaning more toward Mexican fare due to the additional flavorful spices. Let me start off by saying that the atmosphere is amazing. It reminded me of visiting my family in Monterry when I was younger. Saltillo tile, all sorts of Mexican details everywhere, a great ambiance. Note to the manager: Look at the photo of my order. Is this the quantiy, quality and presentation that clients should expect for this dish? The quality of food has always been good. No issue there. I've had the menudo + corn tortillas for breakfast which is when we go most of the time. Recently, we visited for lunch. I had the fajita nachos, my wife had the migas plate and our guest had a chicken tortilla soup.The thing I took issue with was with the price vs portion size on my order of fajita nachos. Unfortunately they missed the mark when it comes to the presentation and portion size of my order. I can appreciate that the price of beef is expensive, but there was only a thin layer of refried beans on the 12 tortilla chips served to me. On top of that it seems the order was left too long in the salamander or whatever they use to broil the dish because the tortilla chips were brown and tasted just shy of burned or over-done. I've never ordered nachos at this price-point and only gotten 12 tortilla chips. LITERALLY every other place I've ordered (and I know Tex-Mex food, I'm from the Rio Grande Valley) nachos at comes with a plate FULLY layered with tortilla chips. The chips are layered with refried beans and a layer of melted cheese on top and finally, fajita slices/pieces on top of that. NUTSHELL: For the price I paid ($15.99), I expected more chips and beans. I can understand the portion of fajita given the current pricing of beef, but tortilla chips, cheese and beans are low-cost items. In addition to that, the presentation was messy. The plate looked like someone had already eaten off of it. I sincerely hope this was an "outlier" experience and next time we go (if we choose to), the portion will be better. Fill the ENTIRE plate with chips beans, cheese and then place the fajita pieces on top of that. I've given the food 2 stars due to the portion and presentation. See photo for referemce. After saying he would be with me "in just a second" after ignoring me for several minutes while doing tabulation the man I presume was the manager acting as host ignored me for a few more minutes. When he finished tabulating he asked "How can I help you?"--a question I hate receiving at hosting stations. I replied "Aren't you a host? I'd like a table." After he seated me the server came with a menu bearing salsa residue. I told the server about that when ordering the super nachos and shrimp tacos. The chili that was poured on top was a little sweeter than expected so it threw off the taste for me. Would probably try something else next time. Restaurant has good music playing and great laid back vibe for 2p on a Friday! Waitress was very friendly and kept checking in periodically to make sure we were okay. The bean and cheese nachos were good - classic taste - 3.8 out of 5. The puffy taco was good also but when I grabbed it to pick it up it fell apart. Not a fan of the shredded cheese they used but the shell and ground beef was good somewhat oily 3.2 out of 5. The chalupa was basic , same shredded cheese but didn't taste as "off" as the puffy taco 3 out of 4. The rice and charro beans were on point wish the portion was a bit more! 4.2 out of 5! We were sat quick. Our waiter, Manny (sorry if I didn't spell your name right) , was on point with his service. It was so busy, so thank you for taking care of us. The chips and salsa were great. Salted chips (didn't taste cheap or oily) and the salsa tasted homemade (I loved the taste of fresh cilantro). The botana platter was filling and delicious! Bad birthday dinner at Nicha's. We had the chicken enchilada with mole sauce plate and were disappointed to taste a heavy concentration of cinnamon in the sauce. Mole does not have cinnamon as one of their ingredients. We assumed that the cook had mistaken cinnamon for cumino. Nicha's food is great. But their management staff lack organization and hospitality. My cousins and I gathered there for a late luncheon. Not only was it absolutely ridiculous how long we waited to be seated but even worse how long it took for our food to be served to us!!!. I called on Friday to advise we would be coming at 3 pm on Sunday. They don't take reservations. So Sunday morning I called again to remind them we would be a party of 25-30 people, arriving at 3pm. We were waiting in the lobby for over 30 minutes before we were seated. This was only after asking the hostess several times how long before we get seated and after I asked to speak to a manager. Once seated, they assigned 1 waiter to service 30 people. Management made no effort to assign additional waiter to assist. Nor did management try to help out. although we got our waters immediately once seated. It took another 45 minutes to take our orders and 30 more minutes for the food to be served. It was close to 5 pm by the time food came to our table. A few people had to take their food to go due to other commitments. Others didn't get their plates for another 20 minutes. I don't blame the waiter, he was excellent. However, I do blame their management for lack of efficiency and organization and care to us, their customers. There are tons of Mexican places to choose to eat at in San Antonio. BUT, I assure you my family will never go back there for a luncheon again!!! Their management simple made no effort to be hospitable while we were there. No time did management come to our table to check on us. And they certainly didn't assist in getting our food to us in a timely manner. read more

This has to be the worst mexican restaurant I have ever been to. The service and the food was absolutely atrocious. First off, the server was confused the whole time and kept forgetting to bring our drinks. Then when ordering, I specifically asked if they had carne asada and she said they did even though it wasn't on the menu. When my food arrived though I got a completely different entree. I then had to order something else and you could clearly see the waitress did not know the menu. I chose something and 5 minutes later she came back out and said they were out of it. When I finally was able to order something they weren't out of it came out when everyone else was done eating. To make matters worse, they didn't give a discount or anything after giving us such bad service and not bringing us the right dish. Considering I've lived in San Antonio for a while, this was the first time I ate at Nicha's Comida Mexicana. Although, I have driven pass from time to time, I never realized that it had been around for quite a while. Needless to say, it was well worth the visit. Service was spectacular. From the waitress to the manager up to kitchen staff, I was impressed at how friendly, welcoming and informative all were. The waitress asked us if it was our first time and because it was, we all got a small cup of complementary tortilla soup. The manager gave us some background information about the restaurant and the kitchen manager, came to tell us about something we had ordered that did not come in an individual order. Yet, they still made a concession and gave us the order. Just perfect treatment. The food was pretty good, too. I ordered the street tacos, which was a large portion served with Mexican rice and charro beans. All of it very tasty and enjoyable. All in all we enjoyed our meal, the atmosphere, and the place. We certainly have plans to return. Worth a second visit for sure. read more

I have been here multiple times because the kids love it but I think its ok why I'm giving 1 star is because it's been 4x not once not twice not 3x but 4 different times I have been there and the servers add extra things to my receipts like a margarita or an a la carte order that I don't order I always ask for receipts twice was the same lady and she always looks shocked when I ask for receipts I don't know why or how this happens often her service is horrible doesn't check on us at all but adds food or extra drinks like come on why is this happening? I would like to first start off by saying we frequent Nichas on West Ave. 2-3 times a week and we usually have good service. But lately we have not been happy seeing wait staff take up the bar area eating and folding silverware. Today May 15th 2025 was the worst service we've had. The bartender Zurie didn't acknowledge us at the bar the entire time we were there (45 minutes). She was eating behind the bar and left the bar quite a few times to go chat with the manager Joanna and other girls. I will say that 2 other waiters stepped in and noticed we hadn't been served and got our drinks and chips started. We waited another 15 minutes and decided to leave because we were never asked if we wanted to order anything to eat. We left upset because we do love the food and their Happy Hour choices. read more
