I really was excited to try this place but I unfortunately didn't have the best experience. I hadn't had anything done in like 4 years and was very nervous but excited to try something new. I chatted with Robbie and told him I was looking for natural highlights and face framing layers. The process went well until it was time to style and blow out my hair. I have thick, textured, curly hair and he first went in on my damp hair and finger combed it which was not only painful but it also made my hair super frizzy. He then was combing it with a small tooth comb which again on my texture was very painful and I could feel was ripping a lot of hair out. He then went into blow drying my hair without a brush and once again... made my hair even more frizzy. Finally he went in with a blow dryer and a brush and when I tell you this was the worst blow out I've ever gotten I mean it. My hair was still damp at the end and it was extremely frizzy! After looking in the mirror it looked okay ... I liked the cut but the highlights were brighter than I expected since I wanted warm, natural highlights. I was too embarrassed to say I didn't think they were very natural. I ended up going home and seeing myself in the mirror with better lighting and full on started bawling because it looked terrible. The highlights weren't natural at all, they were more orange than brown and very obvious stripes in my hair. There was no transition in my root and it literally was like 2000s box highlights. The color was even more orange after my first wash and again did not look natural at all. I was extremely disappointed and I felt so ugly. My hair is one of the only things I really liked about myself and I feel like it was ruined. I now have to pay double for a color correction somewhere else. The whole experience was low key traumatic because of the pain during the appointment and then the pain after because of how ugly it came out. Edit: Following my negative feedback Nick was kind enough to reach out and offer adjustments to my service which I really appreciated. Considering their consistent kindness and willingness to help, I think it's worthwhile to edit my review and add a few stars to their business. This salon is the best I've found in Utah. Nick is an extremely talented and experienced stylist and colorist (and watching who comes out of the salon while I'm there, Robbie is too.) They work together and collaborate at times, which is really nice. On top of that, they are fair and transparent...their services are extremely well priced given how good they are. I have a weird combination of lightened blond hair with dark roots and gray, and I frequently used to walk out of salons not completely happy with the color, because it is challenging. Or it would look good for three weeks, then dark roots would be far too obvious. Nick colors it perfectly using highlights and toner so it all blends in and grows out very nicely, I barely notice the roots. The cuts that I've gotten there have literally been the best ever, everything just naturally falls into place. He is a perfectionist, but of course it is appreciated. And, I LOVE that they don't use heat when coloring usually...so my hair does not feel damaged from highlights. Needless to say, highly recommend them. They are great! read more

I searched through dozens of salons before choosing Nick & Robbie and ultimately chose their salon because of the letter they wrote to their customers on their website. The statement "we don't claim to be the best...we just like to show it" specifically resonated with me because in a world where talk is cheap, it's refreshing that what they say aligns with what they do. From the second I walked in, Nick made me feel incredibly welcome. He is thoughtful, attentive, and pays impeccable attention to detail. Nick is extremely intelligent and an excellent conversationalist who made sure I was comfortable every second of my visit. He's a hair genius who is insanely talented, yet somehow remains incredibly humble and personable. My hair turned out better than I expected (and I had very high expectations because they had such high ratings). I couldn't believe how reasonable the visit was compared to the quality of their service. Nick made my hair look better than the photos I brought in. I appreciate how he customized what I wanted to what flattered me most and I couldn't be more thrilled with the end result! For the first time in a long time, I love my hair! I am the first to admit that my hair was extremely overgrown and looked awful when I arrived at the salon. Between the pandemic and not having a stylist my hair had become out of control. I think that probably had an effect on the way Robbie cut my hair. I was disappointed with the slapdash cut he gave me. He never asked how I parted my hair and so I ended up with a middle part, despite the fact I part my hair on the side. This creates a problem when I style my hair because I now have one weird layer on one side. The other problem I discovered when I straightened my hair. There are two weird chunks that are an inch and a half longer than the rest of my hair. It looks like he did not thoroughly check my hair cut. It is an obvious mistake that probably happened because he did the consultation, washed, cut and styled my hair in 40 minutes. Everyone has bad days and maybe this was just a bad day for him. Someone else might have a completely different experience. Either way I will continue my hunt for a new hair stylist. After posting this review both Nick and Robbie contacted me to try and fix the situation. I think that says something about how much they care about their clients. The reality is my hair looks much better than it did before my hair appointment. They have a ton of five star reviews for a reason. read more

Does your hair stylist give you a bad ass haircut and a plant?!? Didn't think so. I have seen both Robbie and Nick and they are both amazing. They have created a beautiful space (amazing lighting and plants) and they always give me a natural looking color and cut and style that's easy to do at home. I was so pleased with my visit! The space itself is warm and inviting, and very clean! It's not your typical large, loud salon - with just Nick and Robbie in there, you feel like the center of attention. Robbie was my stylist and he was so friendly and knowledgeable! He has clearly done his research, and I appreciate that he and Nick are honest, authentic people who are simply passionate about hair, not just trying to sell you a product or on a hair trend. Okay, I am an older gentleman and rarely use words like super duper or yummy. Sorry. Being new to SLC, I had no idea where to get my hair done. I don't have much hair, even though I am growing it long, trying to become more pretentiously hip. It is very difficult for a hair salon to make me happy. I am narcissistic, vain, and I hope a salon can take 30 years off my age. To make this even more complex, my scalp is quite sensitive. This salon is very laid back and follows no corporate convention or rule. The folks working there, including Nick, are just into doing hair, and ultimate means and end in achieving profit, are largely ignored. This is a unique concept in the avarice world we live in. My color and hair cost thirty dollars. THIRTY DOLLARS! I was willing to spend more then a hundred. When I asked for "product," Nick said, and I quote, "We never sell products to new clients." Huh? He then proceeded to tell me that product wouldn't help my hair anyway. Huh? Am I in America? My hair looks great and my wife, who doesn't think I should color my hair, complemented me on my hair color. Nick is obviously a colorist par excellence. Kennedy, another stylist in the salon, trimmed my beard for free. Free! Am I in the United States? This is a great salon and my wife will be making an appointment soon. read more

Let's start with the space: It's a beautiful airy, homey and clean feel with exposed brick and gorgeous plants and easy parking (for all of you that fear city parking!) Next Robbie and Nick: They will literally make you feel like you've stepped into an old friend's house. They're truly delightful people. They don't try to sell you stuff you don't need and they're very transparent and honest in their work. They're also both very authentic, which is my top priority when deciding what humans I want to come back to, time and time again. Cool and fun conversation, easy to chat with and great energy. Okay, lastly their work: Their work is truly an expression of art. You can tell they take a lot of pride in what they do and they want you to love your hair. And after leaving their space, I do. Robbie did my highlights, and even though he told me Nick is the color master, licensed as such and all, I feel like Robbie is right on par with mastery of color as well. I always fear my hair looking too brassy or unnatural, but their natural vibe made it easy for me to trust they knew exactly what I wanted. And now I feel like I've found a go to place in SLC. This is definitely one of those places where they have lived up to the hype without seeming like the whole experience is them trying to get a 5 star review. Nick James knows his stuff and he definitely knows how to navigate the often notoriously difficult asian hair that a lot of salons struggle with. I've been around the block with several salons over the years and I've had my share of bad haircuts. From working with many stylists, I can honestly say that Nick is one of the best out there. Not only is he incredibly adept in cutting hair, he is someone who goes out of his way to go the extra mile. I was really impressed how he was willing to meet with me and talk with me about my expectations and desires for a future haircut. He did this all because I told him about my apprehensions given my previous bad experiences, and all on his own dime too! Never had I had another stylist who worked so hard to understand exactly what my needs were just to make sure the cut is done right. Nick was fantastic! I came in wanting to chop off a decent amount of hair off and he took the time to consult with me about my expectations and length of hair. He was conversational and took the time to know me during the haircut, as well as checking in on how I felt about it so far. Robbie did my hair, but he and Nick really work as a team. I came in to get my roots done with the vague complaint "there's something I don't like about my current highlights". Where to start... I searched yelp as everyone does and clearly there was no denying that Nick and Robbie are more than a top favorite so obviously it was an easy choice to book with them! I can't tell you enough how clear it was that I made the right choice the second I walked through the door! The place is absolutely adorable and they made me feel so comfortable the entire time! I rarely ever get my hair cut.. I didn't tell Nick this because I didn't want to stress him out but I've never actually had a hair cut that didn't bring me to tears... I love my hair and it seems like the stylist I usually go to want me to hate it... well probably not but it feels like that . Honestly, Nick and Robbie both triple checked my hair for and imperfections.. These two are amazing!! I visited Nick James salon yesterday and got my hair cut by Daniel. He is GREAT! He is newer to the salon and just moved back after living and working in San Diego. I recently moved to Salt Lake City and had to begin the daunting task of finding a new hair stylist. This sounds really snobby, but I am the type of girl that will literally stand up and leave your chair if you don't do some sort of consultation with me at the beginning of the visit. That was my absolute favorite thing about Daniel. I felt like his first goal was to listen and that goes very far with me! After having a poor experience with another stylist in the city who simply decided I should have "bangs" and went ahead and cut them, (which basically ended up being a lifeless chunk in the front of my hair) Daniel was able to fix the issue and made sure to let me know if I wasn't happy to pop back in and he'd fix it. (Wasn't happy? Umm... yeah right!) I also feel like he was the first stylist that wasn't afraid to cut my hair! My hair is quite long (middle of my back or so) and I like quite a bit of obvious layering in it. I think most stylists think I'm joking or something because NO girl with long hair actual wants shorter pieces in it! The layers he cut are perfect and I couldn't be happier! He also gives beautiful blow-drys and an excellent scalp massage at the shampoo bowl. Plus, even though we all know they say it to all the girls, it never hurts when you walk into an appointment and your stylist talks about how pretty your hair is. (; Go see him! Let me start by saying that I hate getting my hair cut. I avoid it at all costs and it had been a year and a half since my last cut. I'm in SLC for work and had some time to kill. I am not in love with my salon back home and decided to give a new place in a new city a whirl. Because I'm socially awkward to the max, I wanted someplace I could book online and that had mostly good reviews. The rest is history. Kennedy gave me the best cut I've ever had and I walked out of the salon feeling like a 10. She was able to take my "please just make my hair less tragic" plea and turn my raggedy split ends into a cute, layered cut. I have a few weird cowlicks that usually don't play well with layers but she clearly just knows what she's doing with hair because dang, mine has never looked better. I loved the laid back vibe of the salon and the fact that everyone, stylists and clients, were casually chatting and no one seemed catty or judgy. Just had the most awesome experience at this salon. My stylist disappeared off the grid a month or two ago and having gone to her for the last 10 or so years of my life I was incredibly panicked because my thick Asian hair has a hard time finding a great stylist in little old Utah. I travel a lot for work and have probably had my hair cut in 5 different cities in the past year so needless to say, I have been desperately hoping to find a new salon at home. After two terrible experiences at separate locations on two different occasions at the very overrated Lunatic Fringe I finally stumbled on Nick James. I called last minute at 2 PM to make an appointment. They were kind enough to inform me it was a pretty full day with only two stylists but they could accomodate me at 3:15. I showed up and they let me know that unfortunately the previous appointment was running very behind so they asked if it would be okay if a younger stylist cut my hair. Not only did Katie do a great job but Nick the owner and Daniel who I was originally scheduled with both stopped by on multiple occasions to check in with us and make sure the appointment was going well and then they were so sweet enough to do the cut for free even though it was totally not their fault that the appointment was behind. I am so excited to finally find a great salon that actually takes the time to get familiar with each individual's hair and has a salon full of incredibly experience people! read more

This review is for Kim James Skin Care, located inside Nick James Hair. A few years ago, I developed anxiety that manifests as a compulsive skin picking disorder (dermatillomania), which, over the years, has left me with hyper-pigmentation spots all over my face. My condition worsened when I moved from a very humid environment to dry Utah about four years ago. After years of hearing "you have acne" from multiple dermatologists and being prescribed intense acne treatments I didn't need and that didn't help me, I started to feel very much alone and like my skin issues were a lost cause that I should just accept as permanent. I cannot tell you what a relief it was to meet Kim. I went in for the first time last year for a basic, routine facial, but she insisted, "You're paying me, so let's fix something!" I told her my situation, and for the first time, someone listened to me. I was shocked! Every time I go to her, she sits down with me to see how my skin has been doing and what treatment would be best for me. (She even talks with me about the root of the problem and gives me tips for ceasing to pick.) I have had several facials, one microdermabrasion, and one phototherapy treatment from Kim, and I have always been thrilled with the results. After this last appointment (microderm and phototherapy), I am even brave enough to go without makeup. Kim has made me proud of my skin again when I never thought I would be, and I will be forever grateful (and forever a customer)! read more
