Love this place, the menu has so many great options! The food is always on point! The employees are super friendly! Great vibes all around!

Nick's Barbecue is a small fast food eatery offering barbecue items, hot dogs, burgers and other foods. There is a big boy like mascot on the top of the building which makes it fairly noticeable from a distance. In stopping into Nick's I decided to go for a hot dog which came with fries. The hot dog I received was a skinless dog on a regular non-poppy seed bun. It came with a somewhat thick pickle slice and a cucumber slice. Cucumber slices are fairly uncommon in Chicago style hot dogs (I've seen about a dozen places do it in over 120 reviews of hot dogs so far), and this is the only place I've seen with a long cucumber slice. However, there's no tomato, celery salt or hot peppers on this dog. The application of mustard and onion were fine, but there was quite a bit too much relish. The sausage itself was skinless and well heated but nothing amazing. The fries included were long crisp fries. The fries weren't particularly salty, or greasy and didn't have a particularly tasty potato paste on the inside. I'd rate these about average. The only other things I have to note about Nick's Barbecue are that they have a decent amount of seating inside, they have an unusual soda fountain with various RC products (despite having Coca-Cola memorabilia throughout the inside), Nehi and even Green River. Overall I'd say this is an average establishment to obtain a Chicago style hot dog and give it three stars.

Beef brisket, fries, mac & cheese, and baked beans

My first time eating from here so might be a one time thing, but this place seems average at best. I got beef brisket dinner with fries, baked beans, and macaroni & cheese. I love the fries and beans and the actual BBQ sauce. The beans had a sweetness but nice tang to it and the sauce was sweet and smoky. The actual brisket seems bland and a bit tough. The macaroni is flavorless and the noodles overcooked. I wouldn't recommend it but would let someone make their own decision. My taste isn't the same as many people's.

The ribs tips dinner and baked potato

The ribs tips are hard to eat and the Mac and cheese is dry and not tasteful to put in your mouth, the only good thing there was a baked potato with extra sour cream !

I had the smoked chicken. I thought it would be pulled chicken. It was a grilled chicken breast cut like strips. I could taste the smoke flavor but it was a little dry. The potato salad and cole slaw were both awful. To think, I traded the slaw for the potatoe salad. The slaw was a bit tart and too much mayonnaise or whatever the white sauce was. The potatoe salad I don't even know how to explain it so just view the photo. I didn't care much for the bbq sauces either. I like a more tangy taste and thinner substance. They were all too thick. The corn bread was excellent and taste like a vanilla pound cake. The atmosphere felt pretty dead, too quiet like a library. I asked the cashier to play some music and so she did. The service was excellent. Both cashiers were very pleasant and accommodating. It is also very pretty inside. Idk if they do buy outs for private events but this would be the perfect back drop for a themed wedding or party. The rustic feel and design made me feel like I was in a Texas roadhouse.

We walked back out and found the door to the restaurant. Staff is warm and friendly and we were seated quickly. Our server was Robert and he was great! He gave his recommendations for which sides would go best with our meals and I felt they were spot on. They give complimentary bread and butter. It was warm and delicious. Hubby ordered the rib tips with fries, baked beans, and had the hot and mild barbecue sauce on the side. I ordered the 1/2 dark smoked chicken dinner with mac-n-cheese, spicy Cajun green beans, and spicy honey garlic barbecue sauce. I agree with Robert, that the sauce pairs very well with the chicken. The tips were tender and falling off the bone. He didn't care for the fries and loved the baked beans, even though they were a bit too spicy for him. My chicken was also very tender and I enjoyed the smokiness. The green beans had the right amount of spice although they were not as spicy as the baked beans. The mac-n-cheese was creamy. We were too full to order dessert. Maybe next time. This is a great neighborhood staple and will definitely be back.

The place is very busy so parking can be a bit hard to find but they do have an overflow lot. Inside, they have a seating area where you can wait until you're seated at a table. Both times I've been there the wait time was around 20-30 minutes but trust me, the food is worth the wait. Even though they were busy, our server was attentive and the food didn't take too long to come out. I went with a group and for our appetizer we tried the platter that comes with hummus, baba ganoush, grape leaves, and fresh pita bread. For my drink, I had the lemon mint smoothie...very refreshing. The plates that my husband and I got were the chicken shawarma sandwich with a salad and the filet plate that comes with rice as well as grilled tomato and grilled onion. They give you generous portions which made it possible for me to share some of my meal with someone in my group to try and I still had leftovers. Finally, we could not leave without having dessert. We had knafeh which is made fresh. Everything was amazing and I can't wait to come back next time I visit the Chicagoland area.

Our server Mimi was on point and was great at her job, so kudos. Two things that were slightly annoying which prevented the 5 star rating were: 1) 18% gratuity for party of 5 or more; just another way to apply a price adder I guess. 2) photographer took our photos then then tried to sell us each framed picture for $20 each. Their base marinades don't need sauces. I did use my aforementioned sauce to flavor things like the plain chicken one of my kids ordered. Hot Pot: 1 Miso and 3 Toms. Two of us thought the Tom was not good. One thought it was okay. The Miso was liked... but as the youngest chose it and was randomly throwing stuff in there... Well her cooking skills need help, but that's not on them. Overall it was a better experience than I expected, even being the one to cook 90% of it. It was a good fun family outing. If/when we do this again, I'll likely ask if I can try other soup bases. Maybe using their mini sauce bowls before committing. Note: I do strongly suggest doing your homework if you are unfamiliar with this type of faire. We did. It enriches the experience. I'll likely bring a note sheet on sauce recipes. If you have more than two people, bring extra tongs. (I did ask for more, but didn't get more - Unsure if this is protocol or oops.)
