We were so disappointed in Nick's Cove food today. It's usually one of our favorite places, but the chowder was literally clam milk soup~ runny and lukewarm- not chowder. I have never in my life sent food back and asked for a refund, but it was so bad we had no choice. We asked the manager what happened and she said there's new management and a new recipe. I can guarantee there's no cream in that chowder. It was almost empty which I chalked up to the time of day - around 1:30 on Sunday, but down the road Hog island and Marshall's store and oyster co were packed. Had a few great meals at Nick's several years ago, so were happy to return. Arrived around 3:30 p.m. on New Years Day - a busy day out at Pt. Reyes, but found a table fairly readily - it's seat yourself now, so my BF looked for a table where people were leaving, and snagged a great one by the window. We sat for 10 min. or so --- wondering where the servers were, before noticing the QR code on the table - so once we connected to WiFi, we managed to order. The beverages and food arrived quite quickly - thank goodness, as we were getting hangry - - so I guess my only problem was the lack of information about the self-ordering process. All the servers were gracious and helpful. The food was good... particularly those fries - the extra spicy Bloody Mary was good and the wine nicely chilled. The post-meal/sunset stroll on the pier was lovely - so go to Nick's but go informed :) read more

We were able to order our food at the grab and go window, and then eat it outside without shoes on :-) I enjoyed my poke although I wish there was some avocado. The fries were good also. Four of us went there for lunch yesterday; been maybe a half a dozen times over the years and while the ordering process has changed, likely due to staffing issues shared by many restaurants, it was still "expensive but worth it." A restaurant in such an isolated area is going to have higher labor costs and the land cost means high rent as well so the high prices are not unexpected. Great views as usual, easy enough to space out from other diners, and the interesting ordering process works well. Order at the outside window and they hand you a buzzer for when your food is ready; get your already paid for drinks at the bar. The Clam Chowder, Fish and Chips and Fish Tacos were excellent. The dozen Oysters were a bit disappointing at about 1/4 of them were so small, virtually invisible, they should not have been served. The ones that were of acceptable size were excellent though at $3 a pop. The staff was efficient but not as friendly as in the past likely due to higher work load and less customer interaction necessitated by the ordering process. We love this place. Everytime we are up the coast we stop in here for drinks, appetizers, lunch and/or dinner. The food is great and the bar is well stocked. I think they always have oysters. I don't recall a time when they didn't  We usually sit at the bar. Usually locals or weekend cabin people and people like us who make the drive frequently. There is a great view of Tamales Bay from every seat in the house. There are tables outside for those that want to brave the winter weather or enjoy the spring, summer and fall by the water. A few weeks ago it was freezing out and people were sitting outside. There is also a long pier for you to take a walk on out to the boat house. If you book a room across the street your breakfast gets delivered to you from the restaurant since it's not open early in the morning. read more

When we arrived, a woman sitting by a computer stared at us and inaudibly mumbled something under her breath while we mindlessly wondered the restaurant like a pack of cavemen. We finally realized she had said "order here" after the cold expressions of the other employees clued us into the odd process of making customers do everything for themselves. Our food was ready promptly, but that wasn't a good thing, considering the coldish temperatures of the fishy fish, the charred and chewy burger and the doughy fish and chips. The red vinegar sauce had a noticeable white pepper flavor while the green sauce (the first time I've seen this) had a pickled jalapeño and cilantro flavor. Ok - so this review is tough for me to write, it is a first & it is hoped that management will take note as well as action. We were visiting, last week, Dillon Beach (an incredible destination) & Nick's Cove was recommended by a friend & the property management company. The meal started off strong with the smoked fish dip & delicious beer selection. The meals were very mid but my son had the cioppino...8 hours later he had a ferocious case of food poisoning that brought a 24 year old, healthy, fit man to his knees. Based on his symptoms, the dr said there was no doubt this was food poisoning from seafood/shellfish. We all had different items than my son, with no shellfish. It was horrible what he went through. He had to be rehydrated. The restaurant was "sticky", looked & felt unclean & there was a fishy smell. I chalked it up to the location & age of the establishment - but now I see it differently. Let the diner beware. *Amended 1.19.25: management reached out to me immediately after I posted this review, apologized profusely, asked for more information (I was able to provide a photo of the bill), explained all their precautionary procedures regarding shellfish storage, preparation & refunded all items containing shellfish. I do realize that no matter how well an establishment follows food safety codes, norovirus can get into just one mussel/clam/oyster, etc. & the clock ticks towards inevitable porcelain throne torment. I appreciate the genuine concern given, steps to remediate & most importantly the accountability. That's how you get us to forgive & return. This place has been on my bucket list for years and we finally made it up there. I'll start by saying the lodging is superb. Everything you need is there and the views and the vibe is impeccable. From the cozy robe and slippers to the fire prepped for you daily. Super cozy clean beds and beautiful bathrooms. Food- we sadly assumed the food would match the lodging. We'd heard great things for years and drooled over the Sunset Magazine spread that JUST came out this winter complete with recipes. One little red flag was the article mentioned the chef had "completed his contract". It's now obvious he came and elevated the menu... but the team left behind is not keeping up the standards. The menu READS well but isn't executed well at all. Halibut- it was a huge piece, thick and completely overcooked and dry Cioppino- all the seafood was cooked to a rubbery consistency Bbq oysters- looked nothing like the magazine spread. They were like little over cooked raisins in a soup of sauce. Wine- over the course of 2nights I tried the sav blanc, the chenin blanc and the blend. I swear they kept pouring me the same glass of wine that tasted like a boomers buttery chard. S'mores desert- just like another reviewer said, it was cold fresh from the freezer but not a desert that's meant to be cold. The graham cracker tartlet it sits in was soggy and cold. The food was SO disappointing we debated canceling our reservation the next night. But- it was NYE and we knew we'd be hard pressed to find another place with availability. My mom is a fan of Check, Please! Bay Area and she insisted that I take her to Nick's Cove for her birthday after it was featured on the show. There weren't any available reservations, but when I called, they told me that we could try our luck as walk-ins if we come in for an early dinner. So on her birthday, I picked my mom up and drove 2 hours to Nick's Cove hoping that they'd be able to seat us. When we arrived at 5pm they told us that they wouldn't be able to accommodate us - but after explaining that it was my mom's birthday, and that I had called earlier, and that she really wanted to eat at Nick's Cove after she saw it on Check, Please - they graciously said that if promise to be done by 6:30pm, they could seat us. Yay! The food and service were excellent - we had the oysters Rockefeller, Ahi Poke, and clam chowder to start, followed with the butter basted scallops, pan-roasted halibut, and wood-fired king salmon as our mains. Everything was prepared perfectly and the food was delicious. The dining room was also picture-perfect, it seems to be a converted outdoor deck by the water, now fully enclosed and heated. My mom was delighted. Even though we had to promise to be done by 6:30, we were not rushed at all, and we had a nice leisurely dinner and were done by 6:20. The entire experience has become lousy. We've been going to Nick's Cove for years. Heck, we even went t there during Covid. Their new ordering and delivery system is Terrible. It doesn't work. We were there 2 days ago. The QR code system didn't work and none of the staff seemed to care. We went to Tony's down the road. Service was great and the food was exceptional. As busy as they were, they still seemed happy you were there. Nick's Cove needs to step up and start taking care of the customers or they won't be around much longer. This is one of our favorite restaurants in California and well worth the 1 hr + drive to get here each time. The views are the superstar here and if you are lucky enough to snag a sunset seating, you are in for a marvel! There are only about 4-5 tables on their outdoor patio which are first come first serve, so wait times can be a couple hours. However, they do have a little shack at the end of the pier where you can relax with a drink or ever order takeout. The service has always been super friendly, and we have come multiple times with 2-3 dogs and they have always been incredibly accommodating to both species. The first time I dined at Nick's Cove was a sunset dinner I planned for my sister's bachelorette. We had a long table inside the restaurant and even the pickiest eaters had a lovely meal. After dinner, we bought some of their custom s'mores kits to roast on the beach although it was a bit too windy that evening so they turned on the pot belly stove in the pier shack for us and we ended up having a "private" s'mores dessert party there. Since then, I have returned half a dozen times with my husband, family, friends etc. We usually bring our dogs so we opt to come right when they open at 11am on the weekends to snag an outdoor table for lunch, or 4-5pm for an early dinner to wait for sunset. It's always an impressive place to bring visiting family who want to see more of of the rugged beauty of California -- that winding hwy1 drive up the coast always takes my breath away. Sooo finally nicks cove hits a home run. We have been coming for years as I travel to Marin every month and the food has always disappointed. a Month or so ago we noticed a huge upgrade in the service.young people but great and eager to please.but the food was so so. Last week we were blown away by the food. Tonight the food was exceptional.everything our table of 4 ordered came quickly. The crudo was nobu level..truly exceptional. The fish and chips were excellent,as was the fish sandwich. Whatever you are doing,or whomever is doing it! Keep doing it. The best post-hike meal. A friend and I hiked to Alamere Falls in Point Reyes and drove to Nick's Cove. We were extremely hungry when we arrived after our 11 mile hike, and the food here hit the spot. We both got oysters, which were as good as expected. Don't skip the bread - it's awesome. Today Nina and I took a field trip out to Nick's Cove for lunch. I hadn't been since Alan and I visited in 2012 w/ Nancy, but after reading an article in the Chronicle about Chris Cosentino reinventing Nick's menu https://www.sfchronicle.com/food/restaurants/article/nicks-cove-chris-cosentino-18295902.php I was interested and suggested it to Nina. She came over to my house and I drove. It was a lovely drive, seeming at once new and familiar, since neither of us had been out that way in a long time. When we reached Nick's I pulled into the lot near the restaurant, which has a disabled space. Otherwise the restaurant's parking lot is across the road, which I would find scary, as people drive pretty fast on Highway 1. We walked in to a relatively empty restaurant w/ tables available inside and out. First stop was the bathroom, which has two stalls and beautiful copper sinks. As far as I can tell there are no gender neutral bathrooms. We were given menus and told to seat ourselves and to come and order at the counter when we were ready. We debated indoor or outdoor seating. Nina wanted outdoor, but she had warmer clothes than I did and I preferred indoors, so we went in and took a 4 top a row away from the window. I had read in the article about fries w/ eyes, which are fried smelt, and after looking up how fishy smelt were (not very), I was intrigued, as was Nina, so we ordered some to start. We also both wanted lobster rolls and iced tea. We paid after ordering and were given a number. First the smelt were brought to us and they were good, tasty w/ a dipping sauce I liked better than Nina did. It was lemony and creamy. After the smelt came the lobster rolls, which came w/ fries. Neither of us noticed that and I'm not sure whether fries were mentioned on the menu. The fries came w/ catsup, which Nina liked better than the dip that came w/ the smelt. Alan and I introduced Nina to lobster rolls decades ago on a trip to Vermont, so we have a long lobster roll history together. The lobster rolls today were good for California lobster rolls. I have never had a lobster roll in California that's as good as the ones in Maine or to a lesser extent, anywhere else in New England.. It scratches the itch, but it's not the same. The fries were terrific and the iced tea was very good, although it came w/ a plastic straw, which I don't like. Being by the water was wonderful and the drive back and forth was a pleasure. The seat-yourself policy, with the super rude hostess we could handle, but the DISGUSTING food, all with the sky-high price point, along with the 20% included gratuity threw us over the edge. Have been coming to N'sC for 20+ years and am disappointed. It has always been pricey, but in the past it seemed worth it. Today there is a dramatic lack of service and warmth. C-19 necessitated changes, but the hands off approach is now std. Ordering via a phone app with payment prompted in advanced, including a tip of 20-30% for the busboy to deliver your meal. Years ago the atmosphere was much warmer and friendly. We wanted to stay longer, have dessert and a cappuccino walk the pier, and sometimes spend the nIght. Now the lack of warmth is a push to the door. The food is marginal and overprice. I would always bring visiting guests and family to Nick's, but it's no longer a destination of interes. read more

My wife and I were out for a day trip to Point Reyes, and were bummed when a restaurant we wanted to try out there was packed and only had outdoor seating. Too cold for our 3 month old. We decided to pivot and check out Nicks Cove and loved the drive from Inverness to Marshall along the Tomales Bay. As soon as we arrived, we loved the rustic vibe of the restaurant along the bay. Our food was excellent and came out quick. I ordered fish and chips and my wife had the burger. Both entrees were served with fries which we both agreed were awesome. Our server was good, but didn't appear much, we also had a fussy baby with us so maybe he didn't want to hover too much. We loved looking out into the Tomales Bay and walking out on the Pier briefly, the tartar sauce was excellent. I also love the presentation of the Menu's as well as the local craft beer selection. Lagunitas, Iron Ox, North Coast and Cooperage! We are so glad we stumbled upon Nick's Cove and can't wait to return! I have never written on Yelp although I am a food writer but had an experience yesterday that left me speechless but still able to use the keyboard. The smoke in the air from the Oregon fires made a trip to the coast a sound decision. I went with three friends from out of town to Nick's Cove on Tomales Bay. We went there as result of a glowing revue on the restaurant. The only thing we found "glowing" was the redness of our ears at this disaster of a gastronomic experience. We took a table by the window. The view was the only salvageable occurrence of the lunch. We sat there at the table like the seagulls on the dock for sometime before we asked a bus boy for a server. He told us we had to hook up with a little metal square box on the table. That was our waitperson. Our phones said, "out of service". The bus boy told us to go to the front desk to order. WTF? So we did. We told the person manning the phone that we didn't care to have to leave our table and conversation to walk up to the person sitting on his ass and said we would like a server. He said that this was a procedure implemented during covid and that the management decided they liked it and decided to keep it that way. My interpretation is that they didn't want to hire staff who would eat into their profit margin. So we ordered at the desk. We had a dozen oysters, ($45), a bowl of chowder ($12), two orders of their "Famous" fish & chips, ($24), an order of fried calamari and an order of fries. The oysters were good. Then came a single order of fries for our vegetarian friend (she didn't see any Item on the menu that she liked). Then came a bowl of chowder (this was good). Then one order of F&C came out before the appetizer of the calamari. We asked for the calamari ($15). They said they forgot. We waited while the first order of F&C went cold. The calamari came in a very, small iron skillet, maybe a dozen pieces with some fried parsley as a garnish. I love calamari. This was the worst I ever had and I get it whenever I see it on a menu. The parsley was the best part of the calamari. The squid was so heavily salted that we had to send it back and we all like salt. That is the first time I ever sent a dish back to the kitchen. My order of F&C's came out. the batter was so tough I had to cut it with a knife. It had an off taste and was not a fluffy piece of fish that you would expect. When cutting it on the aluminum tray, the paper beneath it would shred and get all over the piece of fish which had a very fishy smell like it was not a freshy fishy. The cole slaw that came with it was at or above room temperature. it must have sat out for sometime. You don't eat things with warm mayonnaise in my book. The second small batch of squid was only slightly less salty. One companion wanted a glass of wine and had to leave his seat and go to the bar to fetch one for himself. The food was over priced for very small portions. There was no table service. The food was very bad. But other than that, the fries were good. We spoke with the manager who was polite but didn't seem to get what the complaints were about. He said he and management liked the lack of wait staff. He towed the company line like a fisherman trolling in a small dinghy. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. I recommend that people stay away from, no, far away from Nick's Cove. There is a better place down the road closer to Marshall. I will certainly never go back to Nick's. read more

It's a shame how this place has declined in recent years. This used to be my favorite restaurant to visit when in the area, and show to out of town guests for a taste of the area. After my visit this past weekend, I won't be coming back. Pros: - waterfront view - cocktails remain consistently good and seasonally creative Cons: - the service is impressively lousy. If I order caviar at a restaurant, I expect it to be served correctly per the description (as in, with a spoon, so that it can be spooned onto the stale crackers it was served with). After asking, we eventually received a soup spoon to spoon the caviar onto the stale crackers. - I don't have any qualms with the QR code ordering process nor the new 'seat yourself' policy, but the prices need to match. $20-$30 entrees - many of which are pub fare at best - arent uncommon for the area, but other places with similar prices have better food, service and atmospheres. - on food quality - the fish and chips are solid but not strikingly better than any average pub. Formerly, nicks cove sourced ingredients from the Croft (the hillside garden, meaning extra local, high quality ingredients) but I haven't seen that in years. I understand if that wasn't sustainable with how the restaurant has grown, but the current food quality doesn't justify the high price point. The location remains incredible, the scenery is unparalleled. Stop in for a cocktail or appetizer at most. read more

The good: This spot is beautiful and on the water. Rhode Island Clam Chowder was GOOD. I hadn't had a clear broth chowder before and it was very tasty. The bad: While their website boasts that they use QR codes for ordering so that there "talented team can focus on hospitality..." etc. I believe this is a huge miss in actually providing hospitality. We placed our order via QR code and had a small snafu with the drinks that the waiter tried to fix. About 15 minutes later he finally returned with the correct drink order after walking around with the beer on his tray for 5 minutes. A bit later our food arrived but NEVER did any of their team come by to check on us. I finally had to flag someone down to ask for waters for the table. While the chowder was good, the fries were to have "wild fennel and lemon" on them. No fennel was detected and the fries, while tasty, they were all stuck together in clumps. Once we were ready to pay (via the QR app on the phone) I had to call the waiter over again so he could fix the drink error. He said "oh...I guess I can just take your payment then while I am here so you don't have to do it on your phone". Well gee...since my phone showed an extra $50 billed, yes I would love for you to actually provide some service and take my card for payment. It was obvious they had new staff as there were 6 of them all watching one of the 'veteran' staff members open a bottle of wine. All six of them watched and practiced for a good 10 minutes learning how to use a corkscrew. It seems a bit odd to have so much staff on hand (two hostesses for a seat yourself restaurant) when no one actually comes by the table - aside from dropping food. And again, never did anyone come by to ask if we need anything. The view is great, food is ok and prices are way over absurd. read more

Thiis is a very long overdue review of Nick's Cove from May 2021. It was a genuinely wonderful experience for my family to have lunch at the pier at Nick's Cove. We were deeply saddened to hear about the fire that affected the boat shack. Everything about our meal was perfect! The ambiance, the food, the feeling that you are connecting with nature. Highly recommended, and hoping that the shack can be rebuilt. read more

This place was recommended by our host at Iron Horse Vineyards. It was on the route to our final destinations so we enjoyed the ride. Location: It is right on the river so you have a beautiful view of the water and the surrounding landscape. There is a pier that you can walk down and hang out at the boathouse at the end. Absolutely beautiful, relaxing, and wonderful. There's also a place where a number of people launch their kayaks. Food/Service: both of these get strong ratings. My daughter had the mac & cheese and I had the crabcakes. Both were yummy and I would recommend. Service was swift and attentive. Overall: if you're in the area or remotely close to this place it is absolutely worth stopping by. read more
