We enjoyed lunch at Nicksan after spotting it while wandering around Cabo San Lucas. I recognized the name from an ad in a magazine I saw at the hotel, so I figured it would be worth a shot. I am very glad we did. The quality of the food was incredible. I really enjoyed everything we had. I started off with the Kumamoto Oysters which were fresh and sweet, prepared with a chili mignonette on the half shell. My partner enjoyed the green salad which had excellent quality produce and had a great light sesame dressing. I had a pair of tiaragai (moon scallops) nigiri between the appetizer and entree courses. It was my first time trying this type of shellfish but I enjoyed the texture, it had a nice bite to it and was fairly sweet with a hint of brine and no funk. The rice was perfectly seasoned, sticky short grain, as it should be. For the entree course, I had the Tuna Black and White Sashimi which was topped with pickled radishes, scallions, crispy garlic, sesame, and curry oil. It was easily my favorite dish, a great and unique twist on a classic sushi place dish made with fresh local tuna. My fiancee got the Sea Bass Misoyaki, also locally caught and fresh, baked fork tender in a creamy miso sauce and served with rice. Presentation for everything was deliberate and skillful. The sake list had a nice range of price points, we wound up with Kikusui Junmai Ginjo served cold. They kept it on ice and didn't let our glasses linger empty for long. The service was quite good for it being fairly empty. They were attentive but didn't hover. The decor was fairly subdued but modern, lighting kept a bit lower than my taste for the deep blue color palette. I can't really comment much on atmosphere or noise since it was so empty. I made the gringo mistake of paying in dollars on my card and ended up paying about $10 extra on the meal for their conversion fee (my card doesn't charge) but that's on me since I literally said "whatever's best for you". Overall, I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for an upscale Japanese experience in downtown Cabo San Lucas. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Cabo! Every time I'm in town I make sure to visit Nicksan at both downtown and Palmilla locations because I love the ambiance and the food. Sushi is always very fresh, creative drinks (such as masago martini), and the service is great. My favorites are the lobster roll and tuna tostada, but can't really go wrong with any of their food here. Overall great spot for sushi and Japanese cuisine in Cabo. read more

Well, first of all, shout out to my boy Carlos for taking such good care of us and recommending some of the most mind blowing dishes I've had south of the border, or in LA, or in Japan for that matter. Average Japanese/Sushi restaurant in Cabo San Luca... Terrible parking. We ordered a number of sushi rolls - including hand rolls. Spicy pan fried fish, baked scallops with crab meat and shrimp & vegetable tempura. The rolls were just average. Presentation was really simple. The baked scallops with crab meat was too rich with cream... You could not discern what was in it. The fried fish had curry flavor to the sauce and was too strong to enjoy the fish. The asparagus and bean with the dish were good. The pasta was just meh. The tempura was the only item we really enjoyed - great and light batter and just as good as any restaurant in Osaka or Tokyo. That was their saving grace... Price point is high however. read more

The service- the BEST in the business, when the waiters are assigned just to your table it makes it that more awesome. The Food- Chef Angel came over to our table asked for our likes, took our menus away and started sending plates over. The food was amazing! Best sushi I have ever had. Just returned from Cabo after a 5 day stay. I have been to Nick San 3 times on previous visits and wanted to introduce my friends on this trip to the Nick San experience. Let's just say it was so good and my friends were so impressed that we ate dinner there two nights in a row. Our waiter was Manuel, and he was awesome. Personable and recommended sushi roll after sushi roll that were out of this world. My friends are kind of sushi snobs, so when they say it is really good, it has to be really good! I was certainly looking forward to this place based on the reviews, but was really disappointed. The food was hit or miss. Gyoza was fantastic, so yummy (would be one star without it). The Sushi platter was terrible. Not a good selection or cut. The two rolls were okay. The SERVICE WAS AWFUL!!! Yes, they were efficient and attentive (too much) they were some of the rudest staff I have ever encountered. (Not to mention it was an ALL male staff and we were two females out to dinner.) Literally, the whole mood of the meal was off. The moment we opened the door, there was no hello. There was do you have a reservation, which we did, but still it wasn't even crowded. All in all the fish was decent at best and the service was terrible. The fact that someone in a review called this the "best sushi place in North America" is an insult to sushi restaurants. It was ridiculously expensive as well, which I wouldn't mind paying if it was a good experience but damn. WILL NEVER RETURN. read more

I have been to Nicksan a few times over the years. I knew it was going to be good but was pleasantly surprised to have the best dinner that I can remember at any sushi spot for a very long time I dined with three close friends. I am from San Diego and one friend is from New York, another from San Francisco, and the third friend from Vancouver . All are good cities to have sushi. We were equally impressed by the quality of our dinner. We ordered a variety of dishes. Cilantro sashimi plate was both beautiful and delicious. The tempura was great. Maguro lime roll was fantastic and artfully plated. Soft shell crab was cooked to perfection. And the surprise of the evening was the scallops and shrimp gyoza that was divine. ( who knew that gyoza could be so special?) Service was great. But the cherry on top was meeting Jorge, the Manager who has a lot of pride in working for Nicksan for 25 years. Great little sushi spot in Cabo. We are huge fans of their sister restaurant in southern california, Kushiyu. We were excited to try out Nicksan as we had heard amazing things. It's not the best sushi in the world, but it's good enough for Cabo. When you're sick of eating chips and salsa and need a sushi break check out Nicksan. We were recommended this place by a couple we met at our resort during our stay in Cabo San Lucas. Stopped by for some food and drinks and everything was phenomenal! I'm a raw fish lover and this place had all the best freshest fish in Cabo! Everything was prepared beautifully. My husband had the dynamite scallops and they were the best scallops we've ever had. It's a must try if you end up at this establishment. I had a sashimi platter, can't remember the name. But it was delicious and A LOT of fish! The portions are generous. Everything was great. Atmosphere is great, all dishes and drinks are amazing. Located at the base of time it's a perfect place to begin your evening. Walk toward the water and fun bars/shopping before or after. I listened to the locals & gave Nicksan a try & it exceeded my expectations. I tried so many small versions of dishes but two still stand out today. An off-menu item is the Futami Age. A mixture of Shrimp, scallop, sweet corn surrounded by a basket of catay pasta & drizzle with wasabi cream. I'll start by saying we have gone to this restaurant and their other location in San Jose dozens of times and recommend it to all our friends coming to Cabo. The fish is always incredible but the service today was something I've never been subjected to in my entire life. We were first met with an irate waiter because we wanted to order drinks before food (?) which we thought was strange but proceeded as usual, being nothing but kind. When the time came to order, the server was so rudely gesturing and talking toward my friend because he had a question about the menu (which one would assume is a pretty common issue that a server assists a patron with.) Based on how his demeanor was toward us, we asked the server if there was something we had done to offend him. From then on we were consistently spoken about in Spanish and mocked throughout the entire restaurant by the staff. The birthday dinner that we had intended on celebrating was completely ruined until we moved on and found another location that was actually respectful and hospitable. So look, I'm sure it's fine at least 50% of the time to go.. just make sure you don't piss off your waiter by ordering drinks lol (?) and the food is normally phenomenal but today I chose not to eat mine as it was pretty uncomfortable to have an entire restaurant staff watching and laughing at you in Spanish as you eat, I'm sure it was tampered with in some way. It was just so disappointing that even after we apologized for any miscommunication on our part (still unsure what that possibly could have been), the service was hostile and rude. So now instead of saying this is the best place in Cabo, I'll say this place is fine if you're willing to run the risk of getting a server that decides your not worth his time, and then consequently having your entire experience ruined. In the heart of downtown Cabo, in Nicksan. Such delicious sushi and a fun ambiance. The Sashimi was fresh and flavored with a delicious combination of Asian and American sauces. The Lobster handroll wrap was paired nicely with the soy wrap. The Ahi Tuna Salad was seasoned well and complimented the lettuce.
