If you have not been to Nico - you are absolutely missing out on a blow-your-mind dining experience! As oyster, rosé and lobster roll lovers, Nico quickly became the go-to spot for my husband and me as soon as it opened. There is so much more on the menu to choose from, it truly isn't just an oyster & seafood bar (although both of these are amazing options no matter which direction you choose). The menu is very versatile for a big crowd, which I really like - and having dined a couple of days ago pregnant, I can say there is enough to keep mom & baby very happy as well! Onto our last visit to Nico: First of all, the hospitality is top-notch. Everyone from the host, General Manager, bartender & server made us feel very welcome as soon as we walked in - Victor was an awesome server!! We brought my in-laws and aunt & uncle (in town from Ohio) - they all left very happy. The food: We started with oysters (I didn't partake this time, but the "oh wow's" & "so good" comments made me get food FOMO). There's a great story on how Nico locally sources his oysters that's pretty awesome to read while you are at the table. Next up: the Onion Crab Soup. From the first bite of emmental cheese, onion and crab, to the sopping bread in the soup, it was enjoyable to the last drop. Moving on to the beef tartare (this is coming from my husband) - "The tartare is the best in Charleston - it's has a unique flare on traditional beef tartare with a grilled cheese twist & savory capers. The beef is unbelievable." I literally can't wait to eat raw beef again soon :) I went a bit off course to my normal order and picked off the grands plats - I was craving fish and the Trout Almondine looked (and WAS) phenomenal. Cooked to perfection, juicy, flavorful and gone in .5 seconds. Around the table were orders of the mussels (a brown butter sauce that is divine), a few lobster rolls (bread, lobster, & fries with the camembert fondue - all 5 stars), gnocchi, swordfish, octopus & brussels/cauliflower. Everyone loved their dishes and ate every.single.bite. A few other dishes we've ordered before, loved, but didn't have room for this time are the fried oysters & calamari, shrimp cocktail, bacon clams and potato gratin. I love this place with the complimentary valet since it can be difficult finding parking here on Saturday night. For starter, me and hubby got the cheese puffs. It was a plain cheesy bread puff but so good! Then we ordered the baked oysters (served in a baking pan), that so yummy cheesy as well! For the entree, we got the fire-roasted (this restaurant is known for this cooking style) swordfish with tomato provencale and beurre rouge. Enjoyed a birthday celebratory lunch for my father this afternoon which could not have been any closer to pure perfection. We made reservations for their covered outdoor dining area which was subtle, comfortable & enjoyable! I myself run a restaurant in New York City and tend to notice things in much more detail than others typically would. Our server was attentive at all the perfect times and had ample knowledge on where to guide us within the menu! Their new spring menu was just rolled out so it is ever so slightly different from the menu you'll find currently online however one that I can assure you will not leave you any disappointments. We got 2 dozen oysters (fresh and beautifully presented), the filet mignon (cooked to perfection), the clam's in butter mixed with peppers and bacon (exquisite), the burger (which truly was the best burger I have had in the Charleston area to date and please, no modifications), the baked Alaska (mouthwatering) & lastly the crème brûlée, served with cookies and brownies and fought off by my Father as he claimed it all to himself. I'd like to acknowledge that I've noticed that the Owner reply's to each and every comment on Yelp weather good or constructive. And while that is a rarity in itself due to the exhausting and continual demands it goes to show you that the amount of love and care she and her family put into their kitchen, menu, team & establishment are something that you can taste from the first bite of food to see while looking around and watching the employee's "applauding" style work ethic. Started with the octopus paired with grapefruit, heirloom tomatoes and goat cheese, charred to perfection, a Rose wine from Corsica, moved on to the oysters for two that came with three ceviches; salmon, tuna and scallops, and added two caviar oysters. Our 4th time at Nico - first visit during restaurant week. The service has been spot on each visit. The food has also been very good each time, but not superb. My husband and I each chose to dine from the restaurant week menu. It offered a varied 3 course menu - and 4 choices to pick from for each course. The apple and squash salad was very creative and quite delightful. The onion crab soup (always on the menu) was good as usual. My husband had the trout almondine and it was very good. I had scallops and they were chewy due to being overcooked. Scallops should melt in your mouth - barely needing to be chewed. We had creme brulee for dessert and it was perfect. The server torched it at out table - it had the perfect delicate crispy top, with a smooth as velvet custard underneath - parfait! The wine menu is small but we had a bottle of French Malbec that was quite good. Wow. So show up without a reservation and felt lucky enough to get a seat at the bar. Ordered 6 New England oysters (2 different versions) that came out smaller than quarters (a couple smaller than dimes). Ordered half a dozen roasted that came out burnt cheese tops but at least the oysters were bigger, if you call a little larger than a quarter "bigger". The bread with the roasted oysters was amazing, but not enough to make up for overcharging for tiny oysters most restaurants with half the reputation would've used for stew. The drinks were average but you can't mess up Goose. The bartender was hardly attentive. I guess female by herself screams under tip instead of someone who tips typically more than 20%. Still I left more than 20% like I always do. I would've cut my tip short because I shouldn't have to ask for a second drink either. I should be asked at a place that has this caliber of "reputation" ... so I left what I should "based" on previous ratings because I knew I was going to pay several reviews of how shitty this place is. The service and oysters sucked. I felt like the reviews here were like an episode of "Punked" or by people who don't expect service or quality Don't waste your time or money. I suspect the only reason they are so highly rated is they act bougie but just crawled out of the trailer and don't know NE oysters this time of the year should be the size of golf balls or better. I brought my mother here for her birthday and we were not disappointed. We sat at the bar patio and the server/bartender was fantastic. He was friendly and answered all of our questions with great recommendations. He also made a delicious mocktail. All staff, from entering, ordering, and serving, were great. The atmosphere was comfortable and upscale. The food was delicious. We shared a shrimp cocktail which was very fresh. My mom got the chicken cordon bleu, which she loved. I ordered the filet mignon, which was buttery and perfectly cooked. We shared a salad which was fresh and flavorful. Came here on a whim for my husband's birthday. I do enjoy good food, but I don't often purposefully make mental notes to return to restaurants. This place, I did. We sat outside and although it was warm, there are plenty of fans. The restaurant is classy and clean, with a nautical feel. Our server was friendly and professional; they all wear black and white striped French themed shirts. The restaurant has lots of classic French dishes. I sampled the crab salad, sprinkled with caviar and creme fraiche-it was good. I was very hungry and often eat only half of my entrees so I ordered the small plate of clams cooked in brown butter as my entree. Oh my. It's so good...and sop up the broth with the baguettes... I think it's a perfect portion. For my side I chose the mushrooms cooked in red wine. I devoured those and LOVED THEM. I was able to eat some of my husband's potato gratin which was good, maybe a little too salty but rich and delicious, nonetheless. And for his birthday cake? A torched Baked Alaska to blow out-amazing. Do yourself a favor and definitely come here. I promise you'll return. I had the baked Camembert oysters, duck confit, and a baked Alaska. My favorite thing I had was the duck confit. It has so much flavor and was well balanced and oh so satisfying. I did enjoy the oysters, but I didn't love how charred they were. My fiancé loved them though. We both have never had a baked Alaska so we decided to try it. I would have preferred a different server since she was not confident in herself and almost burned me when lighting the merengue. A baked Alaska is a very light dessert nothing really special to except for the fire, but as soon as you taste the cookie part of it i went to heaven. The cookie was so rich and flavorful I wish it had more in the dessert. That was my favorite part. I do think this is one of my favorite seafood restaurants and look forward to coming back to try more items off of the menu. read more

Took my parents here visiting from Germany... two days ago my dad said he really wanted to go eat oysters and I looked him in the eyes and said "I've got reservations already for 7:30 on Thursday!". They really nailed it to satisfy my parents and thus me (I loved it even without them lol) I've watched Nico's from the start with "hits&misses" But when my guests are as happy as I am then I love it. Got seated wherever we wanted and we first picked inside, but, and this is a preference, we moved back outside because it was pretty loud inside and we definitely made the right choice, even when sitting inside would have given us the privilege to smell the wood fire grill and all the stuff coming from there! You do sit close to coleman but in the back, outside around 7:30 and a fan blowing, it is great. Outside bar, that I've had a many happy hours logged, and $9 for 6, $18 for 12 (1.5$ daily whatever) oysters are a great low calorie satisfying meal! But my father wanted oysters and I just ordered for him: 40 of whatever they chose. 5 of 8 different ones. (I let my dad take 3 of most 'cause... dad)! They were great! Oh and 5 six-inch oysters from Massachusetts so big they looked like a novelty joke that were really good for being ridiculous lol. My dad went into a feeding frenzy after my mom took pictures to rub it into his other friends' in Germany's faces! My mom don't eat no "raw snot" and we didn't have to share! peach and tomato salad was her starter and was great! Main course: Scallop gratin for my mom, Lobster roll with Camembert dip and fries ( yeah yeah "frites" whatever) for my dad, And stone crab claws for me. Cooked crab claws not hard to mess up lol But then it came to fights for two things: Camembert dip And That outstanding scallop dish! I wanted to dip my crab into both so I ordered extra dip Without my parents noticing, My dad really was enjoying his roll so he didn't mind my mom stealing all his fries and dip, He snagged scallops While I wanted to steal my mom's dish and then worked out a bargain by letting them use the Camembert dip I was hiding! Puhh, I hope I got that all right! Ended when mom and dad stole the rest of my claws and the former mocked me with the extra meat she got out the rest of the shells... So there ya go... satisfied customers! My con: The crostinis they serve can be stale (most of the time). Learned to avoid them cause I can eat more without bread anyway (and then my mom got their fresh bread with the scallops and I had to hold back on ordering THAT)! Damn you starch!!! My mom really thought that everyone was working "very well" together, meaning basically they are comfortable with, and know each other, so they are in sync! I have only been to Nico once but I have to say, I was impressed. The atmosphere inside is superb -- I felt transported away from Mt. P. I started with a Petit Plat of oysters baked in Camembert. My favorite way to eat oysters is baked with lemon, butter and Parmesan so I was interested in the Camembert. They didn't disappoint. There was no funny business, just oysters and cheese served in a wonderful cast iron pan and this was a great intro to Nico because the directive seemed to be good ingredients, well-cooked (in cast iron pans and pots) and served with no funny business. I liked the honesty of it, there was nothing for the food or flavors to hide behind. Every dish we had was complete with the exact ingredients described on the very modern and unambiguous menu. Cocktails: I stuck with the French Master 75. Again, it was refreshing in its directness -- it was lemony, interesting and good. For mains, I had another petit plat of bacon clams. Hell yes, these were good. Hot, buttery with the tang of the bacon and the hit of pepper, they were very tasty. The hubs had the fish stew and I thought he was going to drink the broth -- he really liked it. Of course, we had to finish with the Baked Alaska. How can you not? When they have flaming desserts on the menu, you must get one. That's the rule. Well, their burnt merengue was to die for. It is very rich and two people can definitely split it. I am really looking forward to getting back to Nico. My plan is to try the Scallops Gratin next time. A lot of people in my proximity ordered the seafood towers and seemed happy but I really cannot resist seafood cooked in a cast iron pan in a wood fired oven.
