Stopped in for a bean and cheese burrito. It was good, not great. It was a little stingy for being over $5, however the tortilla was really good. They had a serve yourself salsa area with green or red salsa. The red salsa was more like spicy red water, the green was decent. If you have a big appetite, the burrito alone isn't going to cut it. I was visiting and saw Nico's was still there. I had gone there the other day and I had a Carne Asada with pico and it was good but a little greasy. I went back today and asked for two bean, cheese with carne asada burritos and there were literally maybe 10 super tiny pieces of meat inside. I also had a Carne Asada quesadilla, over priced at $39. Nico's is a local family operated Mexican restaurant that has surprisingly really tasty food. They're nachos supreme are delicious and filling. You should really try their bean and cheese wet burrito. They don't use lard and it is really delicious. It is definitely a local go to Place. read more

If you are looking for affordable Mexican take-out, Nico's hits the spot. Nico's is not "fast food", like Taco Bell or whatever. The food here is well prepared, traditionally formulated, but still priced about the same as the typical drive-through. I ordered a Machaca breakfast burro. And I mean 'burro' instead of 'burrito' because at $7, it was as big as my arm. The Machaca was flavorful, juicy but not greasy and well balanced with tomatoes, onions and crisp peppers. The egg added richness and texture to the flavors as well. And the tortilla was very good, thin, with light char and an independent flour flavor. The red salsa that came with it was thin, vinegar-based, and had a strong habanero heat. Very good. In a town full of amazing Mexican food, it's important to remember there is supposed to be a difference between a take-out place like Nico's and the many fine dine-in restaurants around town. Again, this meal cost $7. And was served in 5 minutes. Was it as good as El Charro Carne Seca? No, of course not. But at less than half the price and a fraction of the time, it was definitely worth it. Yum. read more

This used to be one of my favorite fast food Mexican restaurant (see my previous review from 2 yrs ago). However in the last 6 months the quality of their food has decreased sufficiently. I have gotten take out several times in the last few months and the carnitas tacos now hardly have any onions, tomatoes or cilantro and are much smaller and less appealing than they used to be. Wow. I thought it was going to better from the reviews... My carne asada meat had SO much WATER (not grease) and was SO soggy that I couldn't even pick up the shell...the first bite it fell apart. It honestly didn't even taste like a real carne asada street taco...sort of a 'made in a box and microwave' bland taste. The nachos were plain (chips with unmelted shredded cheese.) Fast mexican food. Of the many quick in and outs Nico's gets it done. Not the greatest customer service as the guy at the counter always looks like he is upset that people come in but ok none the less. The breakfast buritos are always on point, then again how does one mess up eggs and bacon in a tortilla. They do have one of the best Pollo Asada burritos of the fast food places, and the Machca plate makes a full two burritos and is very flavorful. Overall for a quick in and out, Nico's is a solid B+. I went back to Nico's for a second try and I must say that I was pleased by the improvement. My husband had the Green Chile with Tortillas and the sauce was phenomenal- my only complaint is that this is a pork only dish because I think they slow cook the sauce with the pork at the same time. The guy who works the counter in the evenings is gruff/unfriendly, which I find ironic when you have to have public interactions. Although I am a fan of Nico's fast, friendly, reliable and delicious fare in general (the Campbell and Ft. Lowell location being a major exception), I dedicate this review, and all of these stars, to Nico's All-Star #1 breakfast burrito, especially as prepared at this location. When I lived in San Diego, this was the last Nico's on my way up to Tangerine and out of town, and the scene of many Last Meals in Tucson. Why is it so good? An ode, or a breakdown: 1. They scramble the heck out of the eggs without compromising moisture and flavor. The result? The eggs are everywhere and nowhere, all at once. Clinging to the bacon, dancing with the cheese, never stealing the show, but without which this burro could not go on. These are the Phillip Seymour Hoffman of breakfast burrito eggs. 2. Bacon. Real, crisp, diced bacon. Delicious, salty, crunchy bacon. Never spongy, fatty, gooey, lardy, or eraser-tough. It's like egg, cheese, and potato distributed bacon confetti instead of rice at the end of their plural marriage ceremony and are now heading for the limo, sprinkled with jubilant bits of porky goodness and ready to party. 3. Cheese. I'm not sure this is actually cheese. It's too yellow, too oily, somewhat flavorless, but an excellent conductor of the myriad salty/fatty flavors happening here. 4. Potatoes. Right on every time. Hot, tender, comforting, bite-size blocks of starchy deliciousness. Well-seasoned, they break up the richness of the burrito and impart a wonderful texture, and they're NOT FRENCH FRIES (I'm giving you the stink eye, creepy-tiki Campbell and Blacklidge location. How dare you incorporate limp, under-cooked FRIES into your burrito. How dare you). This is my favorite breakfast burrito in Tucson, and the folks that work here are great. The guy on the always grill recognizes my husband from the late nineties. Conveniently located in a very-earth toned strip mall across from Oro Valley Public Library, this Nico's is usually pretty quiet and seemingly clean in that overwhelming odor of antiseptic kind of way. Also recommend three rolled tacos with cheese; beans cheese rice & sour cream burrito. read more

There are plenty of Mexican eateries out there, but this is my favorite. Okay, maybe not my 1 and only, but I would eat here 1 meal a day if I could (but I can't, because what I order and add to my food is horribly unhealthy...) Last year, I would grab 1 of their MASSIVE breakfast burritos every couple of months on my way to work, and those days were definitely my most memorable days working at that office job. For starters, I remember the amazing flavors that these days brought me. Egg, steak, chorizo, cheese, bacon, potato, salsa, bea... wait... let me stop right there. Salsa. Yes, the ultimate burrito, taco and pretty much anything else condiment. I LOVE salsa. I love Taco Bell sauce packets, I love Tapatío and I love Nico's green & red salsa cups. Do I love them too much? Yes. Yes I do, because what I remember most about these days at work when I would pick up a massive breakfast burrito was the burning lunch hour... It's not Nico's fault, trust me. Their food is amazing, and their salsa, well... I am proud to say it's still my favorite. However, please, when you decide to add 12+ cups of their delectable devil spit to your meal, think twice. think 2 times. 2 times... number 2..... the "flavor" is alot less enjoyable coming out than when it went it. This is hands down the best Nico's in the valley " Campbell and Blacklidge" a close second. The location is small but clean. The offerings are fresh and plentiful as well as HOT " Temprature wise". Its a burrito shop so I wont go in depth on all the menu items but they are tasty and made with care. But I will say the California burrito is my fave.
