Nico's, which really is part of Tucson's charm, is a Tucson fast food chain offering $3 - $7 assortment of Sonoran styles Mexican food. This is the original location. It is great if you are on your way back from the bars or if your in the mood for a big lunch. The food is very consistent and always great. You can eat in but I recommend taking out from this location. (Go to Oracle/Roger for a better sit down location) I love the food here! Nico's is a great GO-TO quick Mexican food spot. Dont expect a sit down dinner and a margarita. What you can expect is a place full of college kids, quick counter service and a pretty awesome Carne Asada burrito. I'm surprised to see low-ish ratings for this place. I was in Tucson for a week and ate here twice. Big, delicious breakfast burritos!, or rather, breakfast-lunch burritos since they are big enough to carry you all the way through the day and into dinner. They have a little salsa bar with four choices, too. All four are good! Green was my favorite but my friend loved the chunky red one. This is my favorite 24/7 Mexican food place in the area. Of course it's not the best Mexican food but it's still very good and the price is right. With the exception of the occasional piece of gristle, which is to be expected, my food is always delicious. You also need to be clear about the amount and type of sauce (red or green) that you desire or else you might get less than the complimentary 2 sauces per item. The food is decent, but if you value your money you should probably avoid this establishment at all costs. On two seperate occasions I've had an employee try to steal money from me. First time, I recieved change as though I'd given the cashier a $10, when in acuality I had paid with a $20. Second time, I was charged twice on my credit card, for two different amounts (the lesser being the price of my actual order). I only signed one credit card slip, which was higher then the price quoted on the menu. I asked if this was correct, and was assured it was and since I didn't have time to argue I left, figuring I could swing the 3 dollars extra. A couple days later I saw on my banking statement that I'd been charged twice, so now they've made off with over $8 extra!! Ridiculous. Did I mention they got my order wrong also?? I got royally screwed by this place, I couldn't even eat my food because I'm allergic to dairy. Do not eat here, there are plenty other Mexican places in Tucson that deserve your business. read more

Nico's doesn't sell Mexican Food. They sell hot, carby, flavorful happiness - wrapped in yellow paper. Nico's is up there near the top of the list of things we miss the most since moving away. I believe there are 3 benchmarks by which you can judge a Mexican food stand or taqueria: =-=-=-=-= Salsa =-=-=-=-= Nico's salsa is the dark red or green liquid kind; more of a hot sauce really. Don't let its lack of real consistency get you down, though. The flavor is great, but where Nico's red sauce reigns supreme is in heat. Theirs is hands down the spiciest of the Tucson Triumvirate (Nico's/Viva/Los Betos). I once saw some marines dining in after the bars, challenging each other to chugging shots of this potent elixir. One soldier slammed like 13 little containers and he never tasted again. That's called winning the battle and losing the war. In moderation, this stuff is killer. =-=-=-=-= Horchata =-=-=-=-= I think you see Horchata prepped / served one of three ways: out of the splashy Aguas Frescas dispenser thingy, punch bowl and ladle style, or *gasp* from some kind of concentrate out of a regular soda fountain (yuck). Nico's horchata is the first kind, which in my opinion is the best. The flavor is spot on with a nice blend of cinnamon and spice while never tasting chalky. Make sure you shake it up real good with the ice so it is extra cold, as this is how it tastes best. =-=-=-=-= Breakfast Burrito =-=-=-=-= Plenty of places will make you a burrito for breakfast. Heck, some may even throw some chorizo or eggs in it as well. Let me tell you what friend: Nico's is THE gold standard of breakfast burritos in our household. Never before have bacon, potatoes, eggs, cheese, tortillas, and salsa come together in a more perfect union. The size is usually about that of a small mortar shell, which is appropriate considering your mouth is about to get exploded with flavor. Sometimes you'll get shortchanged and get a skinny burrito - once in a while - but the vast majority of the time these things are plenty big. Some other places you ask for bacon and you really get ham cooked to a crisp - not the same. This is honest to goodness thick cut bacon. But the eggs - the eggs are one of the greatest differentiators: somehow Nico's has figured out how to keep the eggs fluffy and dry. This creates a welcome environment for incoming hot sauce, instantly melding into the consistency breakfast burritos are meant to be. This is as opposed to a pre saturated boggy marshland of runny eggs and cheese that might as well tell hot sauce to kiss off. These burritos also ELIMINATE HANGOVERS. Eat one post bars - even eat a half - and the Nico's elves start to go to work in your belly. The potatoes go to work first, soaking up any remaining alcohol in the mix. Cheese and bacon jump in, using their tasty grease power to line your stomach, further slowing the absorption of now unfriendly alcohol. The eggs and bacon release their protein, helping your brain repair itself, and the capsaicin from the hot hot sauce triggers endorphin production to help ease the oncoming headache. Go here. These are some of the best tacos of their type available in Tucson. I had the shredded beef tacos, in which the beef is placed in the corn tortilla and then fried. Then it's topped with lettuce and cheddar cheese. I tried both the red and green sauces. Both are good, but the green pairs very well with these tacos. Three of these will stuff most people. The burritos are also very good. They are quite filling and could be a meal in itself. They also have a dish that starts with french fries and then is covered with your choice of meat, cheese, and other "nacho" toppings. You need forks for this messy goodness. read more

I arrived at nicos to pick up a machaca burrito dor my father and ended up purchasing one for myself. I made it a combo biggest mistake of my life. Too much onions and a very bland taste within two bites my stomach felt 10lbs. heavier and it carried with me through most the day. I wouldnt recomend the machaca to my worst enemy. I used to like nico's food especially when I went to the one in the phoenix-metropolitan area. However this specific restaurant is run by disrespectful workers(namely you carol) that don't care about the owners business. I went here recently with the worker giving me half the nachos I paid for and refused to give me 2 red and green sauces by trying to make me pay for them when they are provided for free when you buy an item(I spent about 13 to 14 dollars) and she didn't put the lime slice that i requested into the bag. When my friend who literally ordered right behind me paid less for his order and then she gave him 6 sauces. I tried to speak to a manager and carol told me there was no manager, and then when I asked for the managers number she said she couldn't give it to me. Carol, the worker that did this pulled this little stunt because she got my order wrong the night before and I called her out on it and then she immediately started giving me attitude and bad service which is completlety unprofessional. I will be filing a Better Business Bureau complaint. I'd advice you not to eat at this disrespectful intuition that rips you off. read more

Do not get breakfast burritos at this location! My husband and I went there this morning for the bacon breakfast burritos and midway through the both of us got chunks of eggshell in our mouths. Immediately I tossed it, but threw up not even five minutes later. If they don't care about eggshell in their burritos what else will they let slide? Chicken, pork? It is disgusting. I've eaten better Mexican food in Iowa. Best thing about it, besides the tomatoes I put on at home because they charge extra for tomatoes on a TACO (?!), was that there was a lot of food. I was just sorry I didn't have a dog to feed it to. Was any of the food that came straight out of a can warm enough? You be the judge. Taco meat so tough I could hardly chew it, with unmelted something-like-American-cheese on top. The shells were real tortillas, for a great surprise. Unfortunately they were prepared yesterday and microwaved, not enough to be hot, but enough to toughen them up. Red and green salsa-ish, fresh as anything that just issued from a can would ever be. The shredded lettuce was not bad, I'll give them that. I don't even know how you can make rice taste as much like cheap tomato paste as Nico's did, nor how beans can be so freakin' BORING and tasting like brine. So if you would like to irritate yourself AND spend waaaaaaay more than you should for some seriously unpleasant taco wads or whatever, Nico's is the place! read more

This is still one of my favorite local taco shops for a couple of reasons. They are usually able to make your entire order in a short period of time, and just about everything on their menu is really delicious! I only ever go here in the evening, and whenever I do, everything is always made to order and the drive thru is really efficient and friendly. The breakfast burritos are always good, and so is the pollo asado burrito. Unlike some other reviewers here, I've only had really good experiences at this Nico's, and I'll continue to go here whenever I get a chance to. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants great Mexican food made to order. read more

I Went in there simply because they are open 24 hrs. Around 5 a.m. I walked in and there was a gentleman with his dirty outdoor coat with his back turned towards me behind the counter. I finally got his attention because the other two men behind the same counter told him I was there. I ordered some enchiladas and he simply there isn't any. No explanation nor apology of why.
