We chose Nighthawks to host a Friday afternoon reception for 30 people after my daughter's wedding last week, and all of our guests were very impressed! The sliders and especially the mac and cheese were delicious. The service was excellent, especially the pouring of champagne. The atmosphere in the private dining/bar area was perfect. Enjoyed my visit. Cool place, clean. Chili was everything I want chili to be. Critiques: Pastrami, not so much- Hardly any actual pastrami in it at all. I had to double check the photos online to make sure it was a fluke. Even for "mpls" sized you kind of assume a pastrami's going to have more then 4 slices in it. Prices are high. Most everything's high-bucked. Hop around town and you can get the same quality food for a few bucks cheaper. No big deal but it's pretty obvious and seems a'bit desprate, sorry. Came here for a late night meal and I left impressed. The decor has a modern diner feel and the lighting is perfect. Not too dim or too bright. Good music on and nice atmosphere. Our waitress Ann E. was awesome. She didn't fake a smile and was attentive. The food was amazing. I had the buffalo cauliflower and the chorizo and cheddar pancakes (I was being adventurous). Head Chef in charge took a well deserved leave. I wish him the best, and I respect his decision immensely. I understand streamlining the menu. But the food is not what it used to be. No more blue plate specials. The salmon and eggs went from this cosmic experience to scrambled eggs that were decent, but not exactly what I used to celebrate. More average dinner fare. The last time I was there, no banana cream pie. We went only for desert, and there was none because the pastry chef quit. Another time, I had fish and chips, and the fish was a bit overdone. It was ok, but again, I had a high standard of the food from the early days. The beer is still very, very good, and the happy hour deal (beer & footlong, $10) was also serviceable, but the bread was on the stale side. Stopped in for a late weekday lunch with the kiddo. Service was quick and very friendly. I had a burger and fries, kid had Mac and cheese from their kids menu. HUGE portion on the Mac and cheese, but it was delicious and will be easy to reheat for another meal at home. Burger was good, but I felt it needed something... It was really sweet from the carmelized onions, and I wanted something to cut through the sweetness. Mustard? A really spicy pickle? Dunno. I had the chopped liver and did not know what to expect as we sat at the kitchen counter and saw plate after plate of gorgeousness slide by. One plate stood out to me and I had to ask what it was; chef gave a wry smile and said "it's yours". Swoon. Perfection. There is a table reserved in back with a special menu 3 days a week. I want to try EVERYTHING on that menu...just don't plan to eat before or after because you will be ridiculously full. So good. So very, very good. read more

I have a weakness for brunch food and this place did not disappoint! Hubby and I came here for Valentine's Day brunch this morning. I am glad we came here when we did, because this place gets packed early! We arrived around 10:30 and were told we could sit at the bar or there would be a 25 minute wait for a booth. Being the hungry couple we were, we decided to belly up at the bar. What we ordered: Single cheeseburger with an over easy egg and potato salad on the side Classic breakfast with bacon Peanut butter and chocolate chip pancakes My cheeseburger was gooey and delicious. The special sauce really adds flavor. Wasn't a huge fan of the potato salad, however. Kind of bland. Hubby had the classic breakfast with over easy eggs, hashbrowns and bacon. The bacon was thick, but definitely a different taste. Not awful, just not amazing. My husband said the hashbrowns were excellent, however. Perfect amount of crispness. Moving on to the peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes...holy. This was our favorite item. The hefty dallop of peanut butter on top of a stack of three delectable chocolate chip pancakes with butter and syrup...oh, my. So good. All in all, good diner. Good food. Summary: didn't get what we ordered, server didn't do anything to fix it, had to pay for food we didn't even get. I've defended Nighthawks as other friends have said their quality is slipping. I've been there multiple times and the food was always good. But I had a terrible experience and I don't think I'll be coming back. My parents were in town and wanted soup and sandwiches for lunch. With Nighthawks newly reopened for lunch and having a soup/sandwiches special I thought this was perfect. The food was alright, but the incompetence of the server was glaring. The menu says that the lunch special comes with a small side of fries. It says it online. It says it on the printed menu at the table. We ordered 3 lunch specials and got zero fries. When the server came over, we asked where our fries were. She insisted the special didn't come with fries, even after our repeated assurances that it did. So we got no fries, but still paid for them. Plus, my mother had made a substitution for the fries so she ended up paying even more than she should have for less food! The lunch menu has 10 things on it. We were 3 of 5 people in the whole place. How is this so hard to keep straight? I won't be back. Ever. Getting what you ordered is the cornerstone of a restaurant experience and Nighthawks can't even get that right. read more

I came hear this past Sunday morning for brunch with girlfriends for the first time. I was able to park pretty close by on 38th & Blaisdell (parking tip!) since there isn't a parking lot, and I'm not a skilled enough parallel parker to park on bustling Nicollet. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with bacon, and it came with a side of hash browns. The bacon was cut really thick, which is the opposite of what I like (I like practically burnt, super thin bacon). Not their fault at all; I should have asked about the bacon before ordering. My friend happened to order a side of avocado that she shared with me, and I would definitely recommend substituting avocado for meat on the breakfast sandwich - it was delicious! My friends ordered a couple different adult beverages: a Bloody and the Hopper. The drinks were okay, and the presentation was lacking. The Hopper was served in a pint glass, and we were expecting to see a pretty cocktail glass. My friend also wasn't super fond of how the drink tasted, but she said it was very strong (that's what counts, right?). Overall, this a great spot if you're looking for an inexpensive brunch. My meal + Diet Coke came to only $12, so really budget-friendly. Also, our waitress was super sweet and attentive to our large group. Recommend this place for your next brunch! read more

I've been to Nighthawks about 5 times and it has yet to disappoint. Never crowded during weekday lunch time. The Cobb salad is the best I've ever had. It's a unique spin on your usual Cobb, standouts including marinated tomatoes, soft boiled egg, olive tapenade, and thick cut bacon. Also, the tuna melt is to die for. Came here for Sunday brunch. First they were out of a chorizo, cheddar and corn pancake at 12:30. Service was really slow from beginning to end, by the time the server got back to offer me another mimosa she informed me they were out of orange juice. Love the concept of neighborhood joint doing high-brow renditions of diner comfort food. The layout is great because of the open kitchen that demonstrates the kitchen crew is really dedicated to their craft. No can opener slop here and everything seems to be made from scratch to the point of being held until ordered and then fired on demand. The menu has a lot to interest you including several variations of a Kramarczuk's hot dog with a number of odd combined toppings that strangely seem to all work pretty well together. One of the best things is the homemade chicken soup and the daily fixed blue plate specials promise comfort food over the entire spectrum from fried chicken to meatloaf. So why only 3 stars? First let me say that they are really close to 4 stars in my book but I have been in on several occasions now and have noted that the food, while tasty, comforting and very filling (portions are large), it has been consistently heavy-handed on the seasoning and overly salty. I actually like salty, savory things but this is even a bit much for me and it has been on every visit. The other issue for me is that it is a bit pricey (granted the portions are large and they are doing everything from scratch). This place does make good comfort food, albeit upscale. However, it is the type of good food that you wouldn't mind eating all the time but you really can't when a blue plate special costs up to $26, a large pastrami sandwich will set you back $18, and bottles of wine hover between $28-44. I suppose I could go there and split meals with my dining partner or only order wine by the glass (which is worse in terms of economic savings) or not at all but then why go out to eat? So, dinner for 2 with wine will likely set you back north of $75 with tip, more if you order dessert. While the effort is upscale comfort cooking, this puts it in the ballpark of many other non-comfort food places which kind of defeats the point of the concept in my mind. Like I said, maybe I'm being really critical and it is very close to 4 stars but the salt and the overall value are holding it in check for me. read more

What I like about Nighthawks is the simplicity of the menu, the consistent quality of food and the great service. As a life long meat eater I was eager to try the impossible burger recommended by my life long vegetarian ex mother in law. She had been there two weeks prior and loved it. Had tried it at other places but the sauce bun and prep were her fav. The burger did not disappoint this meat lover and I will be back. Good drink selection and great happy hour. We came in for dinner at 5 pm and were promptly seated and waited on. The service was good at the start but by the time our food came out we never saw our server again for 40 minutes. She had been transferred to a different area and we were not given to another server. We finally asked someone and were comped with a fifteen dollar gift card and our appetizer and a join us next time...The bill was still $83 after without a tip. Very disappointing experience. Our food also wasn't great. The French dip was extremely salty! A full fish and chips is only two pieces of fish with a generous portion of subpar fries. The thin cut bacon was burnt and I'd say a cm thick...not what I'd consider thin. We won't be back even with the gift card. read more

Horrible service and not good food. My friend and I used to go to Nighthawk weekly about 10-12 years ago, but then it changed owners and the food quality was awful so we quit going there. We drive by there pretty often and thought we might try it again. We had looked at the dinner menu and it sounded pretty good so we went there today for lunch. They only had a brunch menu available so we ordered beverages and breakfast. Our waitress (Michelle) didn't bring my friend's coffee until at least 10 minutes later and didn't bring my OJ at that time. My juice came about 10 minutes later and I said I didn't want it anymore. Our food came shortly after that but instead of the eggs Benedict that I ordered, the waitress brought some kind of a sandwich. I waited awhile and then went and asked for the manager who finally showed up when my breakfast was delivered. He tried to justify the waitress's bad service. I showed him my eggs Benedict and pointed out that there was very little Hollandaise, and the two small pieces of ham did not even cover the English muffin. I eat eggs Benedict all the time in many restaurants and these were valid complaints. The manager did not offer to remake the meal. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT! read more

But Boludo didn't have any AC (it was 90 degrees that day) and I just wasn't in the mood to sweat while eating out. So, we walked over to Nighthawks in order to get cool. The menu is typical diner food - just much better tasting than most places. We ordered the pastrami, burger, and cheese curds. The curds were okay - the cheese to batter ratio wasn't my fave. I typically like the curd to be smaller with a bit more batter. These were just mostly cheese. The pastrami was good, but the mustard is pretty spicy, so be aware of that. It also had cheese on it, which was a bit different. The burger was pretty good - especially for a diner burger. Very flavorful. read more

Holy cow! This unexpected brunch bonanza was good. We got the Chorizo Pancakes and the Rueben Benedict with cold pressed coffee from neighboring Big Watt and it was all incredibly good. So I am one of those people who are just slow. I can't help it. I walk slow (but I am also 5'2''), I eat like a grandma with no teeth, when I finally got a smartphone it was an iPhone 5S and only because my work said "we want to be able to stalk you whenever we want!" and I recently got into Hannibal which if you haven't heard didn't get renewed for the next season. I texted my sister to say "OMG Hugh Dancy is so HAWT" and she tells me he is so 2013. What can I say? So now that everyone and their goldfish has gone to Nighthawks I have to go and pretend I am the first one to ever hear of it. Manbeard got the French dip and I got the Blue Plate special of fish and chips.You guys, the fish and chips could feed 3 of me, no lie. Don't do what we did and get two meals. Just suck it up and know that the servers will gossip about you in the kitchen when you say "the fish and chips and and extra plate, please!" so you can split it with your other person. The fish and chips aren't traditional in that the batter is generously spiced. Black pepper and other goodies so it is tasty but not English pier still delicious. Manbeard got the French Dip because he worships Jon T and if Jon says it is good, then that is what he is having. I think he is also leaving me for that sandwich. I also got their ginger brew which is juiced ginger with soda water and simple syrup garnished with a candied ginger. If you like ginger, you'd like this. I loved it. If you are expecting, or Asian, you will also love this. Unless you are a weird Asian who doesn't like ginger if that is the case, what ARE you? I'm a really big fan of this place because it has been on point each and every time I have gone here for a bite to eat. For me, their take on classic diner staples is FAB-U-LOUS. I think I could go here every day and never get sick of it. The happy hour deals are legit..so legit that last time I went there, I ordered EVERYTHING on the happy hour menu with my friend. And yes, we finished each and every item we ordered. The service is great and I would suggest you choose to sit at the counter so you can watch the salad artist do her thang. It's like watching an artist craft a work of art before your eyes. One of the main reasons I really like going here though is the habanero hot sauce. Cry Baby Craig's or something like that? That shiz is to die for. I've looked for it every where and can't find it. I pour that stuff all over the food I order. Honestly, I almost took a bottle home until I realized it was wrong. If you go there, ASK FOR IT. IT IS SO GOOD. There hasn't been anything I haven't liked yet, so here's a breakdown of some of my top picks: Chopped Liver-has anchovy butter and crudité on grilled rye. TRY THIS. I don't care if you think liver is "gross". THIS STUFF IS AMAZING. Savory; Creamy. Flavorful. Delicious. Not liver tasting at all. Fried chicken leg (kingfield spice and maple bacon syrup) - crispy but harder on the outside, juicy on the inside. ADD CRY BABY CRAIGS TO THIS. French fries: standard but still good, the portions are huge Nighthawks hotdog: a foot of deliciousness with a mountain of toppings including dill mayo, shoe string potatoes, pickled peppers, cheese, and spicy mustard. SO GOOD. SHARE THIS WITH SOMEONE. Bacon ranch chicken sandwich: only available during happy hour but bomb.com. Chicken is crispy on the outside with a light batter, juicy on the inside, and there's thick cut bacon on top. There's plenty of parking behind the building and on the street. This is just a cool place to hang out with a regular happy hour and a late night happy hour that starts at 9pm. A must-get drink is the Hopper, it's just utterly and indescribably delicious. I had the Port & Tonic, with is like another other drink with Tonic, but it's port. It's quite refreshing. Definitely worth a shot. And if you need a snack, chips and french onion dip won't steer you wrong...neither will the pretzel bites. If you're hungry, you should definitely get one of their hot dogs. These are so awesomely large and packed with awesomeness that you'll probably have to knife and fork it. They're pretty damn good and definitely worth at least one try (on sale at happy hour). It's a really chill place. Give me a classy diner vibe with the bar and booths as you walk in, but then there's actually Dine-in seating behind the bar too. I haven't tried it, I just love sitting at the bar so. They have 2 tvs...so it's a nice chill place to catch up on your sports if you're into that type of stuff. read more

After two visits, this place has disappointed. One visit the service was good, but with all the stellar options in Minneapolis for burgers and this kind of food, it didn't stack up. I went to Nighthawks with a friend on a very chilly Monday evening and was greeted promptly by a server who led us to a table. I ordered the French Dip, and it was delicious, I do wish the cheese had been a little meltier. My friend got the raw veggie salad, and she seemed to enjoy it. The flip side being she's a vegetarian, so take that for what it's worth. Like all she eats are vegetables and cheese. I also got the pickled PBR. And this is what really, REALLY sold me on this place. I really should preface this with the small fact that I drink a lot. I like drinking. I like the taste, and I like being drunk. It's like what I do. The pickled PBR tastes of garlic and dill, and it is so fantastic. I could sit and drink these all day. If you go here, get yourself a pickled PBR. And the list for Best Burger continues to grow; both a blessing and a curse. Yes, we want options, but it's getting harder to choose just one! With no surprise, I had the Nighthawks Cheeseburger. And, in honor of my experience, a 5-star review. We bellied up at the diner counter, and watched as our burger sizzled to perfection on the flat top. The concept of this restaurant is truly incredible. Here I am, at an elevated diner, but not feeling like I'm covered in grease. It's an ode to Americana without acknowledging our unhealthy lifestyles. The burger was perfection: buttery, a little salty, blanketed in cheese, a kiss of caramelized onions on the bottom, and topped with a secret sauce that both satisfies and mystifies. It really was remarkable. I upgraded to fries. Now, I'm not usually a fry guy (blame my years in high school working the fries at the golden arches), but these fries were everything! Perfectly cooked, crispy, with no soggy tagalongs. The upcharge is worth it. We also ordered a small plate of the bacon, because #murica. This bacon, people. THIS BACON. I came here for brunch with my family on a Saturday morning. The place looked great and the smells from the kitchen had my mouth watering... ufortunately I left dissatisfied. When our server came with the drinks, my brother received a hot coffee instead of the cold coffee he asked for but shrugged it off. Then we waited quite a long time for the food despite the fact that the restaurant was only about half-full. Our server did feel bad when my dad asked about the wait, so she brought us a big Caramel Roll to share. It was extremely sweet and delicious. When the rest of us were served, my boyfriend had to wait a few more minutes for his. Even though it isn't a long time, it feels like a lot longer when everyone else is ready to eat. While everyone else went with classic breakfast foods, I had my eye on the NH Brunch Poutine ($12). The egg was fried a little too long so the yolk was hard, the fries sogged up quickly, and the non-squeaky cheese curds were half-melted. The poblano "gravy" and pulled pork were excellent, I should have just asked for that in a tortilla, although the pork could have been pulled a little more as they were really big chunks. The food and service was a mixed bag but because of our nice server and the roll, I gave it an extra star.
