I enjoyed this place so much I had to come back only 4 days later! The first time I came it was for happy hour. We got seated immediately at the diner bar so we could watch all the food being prepared - warning, it will make you want to order everything(!!) and that's why we had to come back for brunch after we saw all the pancakes being made. I ordered the happy hour special: hot dog and a beer for $10 (so essentially you are just getting a beer for free). I choose the Nighthawks hot dog that had dill mayo, red dragon cheese, spicy mustard, giardiniera, and shoestring potato and really liked it! It is covered in toppings and very filling! They have a good beer list as well with quite a few different types of beers and breweries represented. The second time I came it was for breakfast. I ordered a Five Watt cold press that they have on tap and ended up getting free refills so I got 2 cold press drinks for $3.50 - that is a steal!! I really wanted to try out the pancakes but ended up getting the Nighthawks breakfast sandwich and wow, it hit the spot! It was way bigger than I expected and was covered in melted cheese! I choose sausage as my meat and it was very filling! I would recommend getting a side of hashbrowns or something else if you want a full meal because otherwise it is just the sandwich. One of my favorite brunch spots so far in the Twin Cities! Arrived around 10:45AM for Sunday brunch and got seated right away, just before it started getting busy! Note: they don't take reservations, so get here before 11AM if you are not a fan of waiting. Bacon Kimchi Scallion Pancakes Short Stack: $6 These were my favorite of the meal! Pancakes have never really been a big thing for me since they are usually just sweet. These are sweet and savory - sounds like a strange combination, but really works together especially with syrup and butter! Reminiscent of Korean scallion pancakes. Also generous portions of bacon and kimchi, and the pancakes itself were fluffy and well made. I was pretty full after this already. Cold Smoked Salmon $12 Scallion cream cheese, scrambled egg mousse on toasted English muffin topped with roe - perfect bite when you bit into the roe, and you get some of the liquid. Cons: very small over priced eclectic menu, beer and wine only. I opted for the short stack peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes. I didn't expect chocolate chip pancakes with a smear of peanut butter on top. No. My boyfriend ordered a $12 dollar foot long hotdog. It was good but too expensive. This used to be just about our favorite place in town for a well made, cheffy take on diner food. Then it sort of all changed for the worse. The food became inconsistent. The Vegie Salad that used to be shaved veggies became more shredded. The burgers became hit or miss. They were frequently out of things and the service seemed to skip. We thought we would give it a try again this weekend for brunch. Well things have improved I guess but it's still not back to its old self. The service was a bit indifferent, the open kitchen seemed a bit disorderly, and the lack of Kimchee nocked a few items off of the menu (this is something that would be good to know from the server, rather than a quick came of "do you have this one?"). I had the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, well actually without Kimchee, Cumin Aioli and with Buffalo Sauce, so sort of Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. After all of that it was tasty. We stopped here for Saturday brunch on a whim and arrived to a busy but not packed restaurant with an interesting take on a modern diner. The food was more upscale than typical diner food as expected in this neighborhood, but still offered large portions for decent value on the menu. I picked stuffed French toast which was well presented and filling at a reasonable price. The coffee was a dark roast that tasted almost like burnt diner coffee, I feel this could be improved upon. My dinning companion had biscuits and gravy which had an extremely large portion, but left some room to be desired for his taste, some of the gravy was separating fats. The service was great throughout the experience which the waiter checking back multiple times at just the right moment, and the bottomless mimosas for under $10 is a great value anywhere in the Twin Cities, overall it is somewhere we would both for sure stop back on occasion, and a hopeful for some other menu choices. read more

First and foremost, I have never written a review because I never feel it necessary and it's generally a waste of time. If a place is crap, I don't go back and that's the end of that. However, this incident struck a chord that I couldn't let go. TLDR: We were served raw chicken, given a discount of 6 dollars and no apology. Heard good reviews about this place so we decided to go. The place looked nice--I was praising the atmosphere and how nice it was. We ordered a hotdog and decided to wait 20 minutes for happy hour to order a sandwich and beer combo. The hotdog was fine, but the chips that came with the hot dog looked like they were from the bottom of the chip bag. We also ordered fries. When the fries came, they tasted bitter as if using old frying oil. Notably, the fries were bagged frozen fries, nothing like hand-cut fries (other reviews will affirm to that). I had 4 fries stuck together that were super soggy, which also confirms their frozen origins. Here's where it gets bad. When the chicken sandwich came, it looked amazing. One thing I noticed, but didn't really cross my mind immediately was that the chicken was a bit lopsided in size (See pic). I split the sandwich in half as best I could. I proceeded to hammer down the fries first because, although the fries were terrible, I hate wasting food. This would also have allowed me to finish my meal with what I thought would have been the better part of my meal, the sandwich. My girlfriend had finished her sandwich part first. When I grabbed my sandwich after having already bit two big chunks, she pointed out that my chicken looked raw. I dropped it and looked and was shocked that it was indeed raw. We waited a bit then waved the waitress down. In my mind I was going to be very courteous and let them redeem themselves with their consequential response and actions. I told her, "I think it's raw." She looks for a second and my girlfriend chimes in and says, "it's raw." I was taken aback when her first response was, "the cook always puts a thermometer in the chicken. I watch them put it in." She continues to stare at it. To help her case I said, "the chicken was really lopsided so that might have been why it was not cooked evenly." However, my reason for mentioning that was to see how she responded. She didn't offer an apology and really showed no true acceptance of their faults. The whole time I'm being cordial to see if she responds how I hope any establishment would if something this appalling happened. Hardly an apology was given. She retreats with the dish to determine what sort of "discount" we would get. She returns with the bill with everything full price. I thought, "seriously" but she returns again to give the "discounted" bill. I looked and saw an "employee" discount of 6 dollars. The happy hour meal was 12 dollars for a sandwich and a beer. The beer, if purchased alone would have been 7 dollars. Essentially, we paid 6 dollars for the beer and a potential bout with food poisoning. As we left, there was not a single utterance of an apology. They clearly don't understand the severity of the consequences of food poisoning. The waitress herself was very soft spoken and standoffish and seemingly lacked the skills as a waitress at a seemingly well-to-do establishment. Total bill was 22.90 with the 6 dollar discount. I think it was just shocking that no apology was given nor was there any other staff that came to apologize for their mistake. This place was promising until this happened. Never again. read more

The atmosphere of Nighthawks is casual and comfortable, much like the food. It's always nice to walk into a restaurant and promptly be greeted and seated. Service was typical in terms of speed, not too quick but not painfully slow. Although our server was very affable, which I appreciated. Seeing happy hour specials is always nice even though there weren't many food options for it. Regardless, getting a little discount on adult beverages is awesome! I love a place that can keep up with my hearty appetite by offering meatier feasts alongside with the traditional (iow, lighter) breakfast dishes. I split the Diner cheeseburger, pancakes, and the truck stop with a friend and everything was on point. Lately, I've been addicted to having the broken yolk on top of my food. Since fried egg was a part of my cheeseburger as well as the fried chicken dish, the spilled yolk on them took me to a very happy place. Service here was amazing since we all got our food and refills on drinks quite attentively. Food was above average and service was okay therefore this is getting 4 stars but has 5 star potential. I highly recommend the buffalo cauliflower for an app. It's like having healthy buffalo wings. The portion size is huge and it's served with the biggest pieces of blue cheese I've ever seen. We got the MPLS pastrami sandwich and the fried chicken sandwich. The only difference between the 2 pastramis on the menu is that the MPLS is smaller but I can't imagine how much bigger it could get. The amount of meat was falling out of the sandwich and the whole thing melted in my mouth. The potato salad was a perfect smaller portion to go on the side. Mostly a mustard base and wasn't overly dressed. The fried chicken sandwich should have came with 4 buns because the piece of chicken was so giant. It was delightfully crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We were celebrating a birthday so of course we ordered ice cream. The blondie frostbite was so thick and creamy it got better with every bite. The crunchy pecans and blondie chunks were a great texture contrast to the smooth ice cream. Today was the grand opening of Nighthawks in the Kingfield neighborhood. Each day we find ourselves overwhelmed by the opening of another restaurant in the MPLS, St. Paul area. Finding the right one that fits your taste in food and atmosphere can be a challenge. Every once and awhile you hit the jackpot and find a restaurant that offers amazing food, great décor and best of all amazing staff. Nighthawks excels at each of these. The gods smiled on me today and allowed me to get done with work in time to be one of the first to try out this new hot spot. I called my brother and told him to meet me when they opened. Being the type of person that doesn't like to wait in lines I sat next door sipping a coffee and watching the crowd swarm the door. After letting the line disappear I walked in and sat at the diner bar. From here you have a front row seat to the best show in town. Watching chefs transform common dishes into something amazing. Looking around the space you can't help but notice how great the space looks. Large booths and an open seating area that allows people to move freely. I started my experience with a Michelada (cousin of the Bloody Mary) which I found to be a refreshing start to dinner. If you are a fan of Bloody Mary's I highly recommend trying this. Appetizer: I ordered the French Onion soup. The menu states that it is Vegetarian but as a seasoned meat eater I would have never guessed. The base was rich with flavor that lets you know a great amount of time was spent getting it just right. Main Dish: Choosing the NYC Pastrami sandwich was an easy one for me. Moist, smoky pastrami piled high was an overwhelming sight. Paired with a creamy coleslaw made me feel like I was back visiting New York. My brother ordered the Wednesday special Pork Chops. Multiple chops stacked on top of 3 apple pancakes. The visual of this is hard to put into words but trust me when I say these are not your grandmas pork chops. Dessert: Even after admitting defeat by not being able to finish my pastrami sandwich I felt the need to try dessert. I set my sights on the Chocolate Hazelnut Cream Pie. The combination of rich chocolate and light meringue is the ultimate end to a great dinner. My brother ordered the Strawberry Rhubarb Cornmeal Fruit Pie. Because he quickly ate his slice I cannot give my opinion on this but seeing the smile on his face and his clean plate let me know he loved it. I ordered the cheeseburger and it's freaking good. If I ever get a craving for a fat juicy burger again I will definitely come back here. The cheeseburger came with pickles, onions and their special sauce. You can get lettuce with it but it is shredded. Their burger kind of reminds me of revival's but the beef patty here is more juicy. I also had a burger, which was ok, but I took the cheese and special sauce off (due to lactose intolerance), so what could I expect? Found this place via Yelp and decided to try it out for breakfast/brunch before some hiking. Decor is cool, sort of a nice diner, a little older but hip too. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. First thing we noticed was the cold air. The air conditioner was working so well that our food was cold before we could finish. Maybe we just lucked out on the booth. It did keep my beer cold though so it wasn't all bad. We ordered The Landon and the eggs benedict. The Landon was excellent, but I would add some spice via hot sauce. Everything cooked well and tasted fresh and the use of the sweet potato was great. The benedict was okay; the main issue being a very, very thick cut of canadian bacon on the english muffins. If that's your thing, great, but it threw off the ratios too much for our liking. Oh man, this place is phenomenal. My love got the salmon Benedict with whipped eggs and a side of cracked pepper bacon. I got the blueberry lemon pancakes with a side of hash-browns and we both split the cinnamon roll. The benedict was the best with salmon caviar on top, a very rich breakfast item. The bacon was thick cut and my love says it was delicious. The pancakes were nice and fluffy with while blueberries right in the middle. I only got the three stack and that was super filling. They also offer a 6 stack for lumberjacks. The hash browns were some of the best I've had. Thicker cut with the skins in and lightly salted but crisp to perfection. The tuna was very fresh and wasn't loaded with the usual gooey mayo, just a nice lemon-caper dressing. It was on top of a thick slice of griddled homemade bread and topped with cheese before bring broiled and finished with some tossed greens. The fries were oh-my-God good. It was classic food but NOT typical - we were all raving about how uniquely good it was! I will order the sandwich again and I would highly recommend the bacon and I'm not usually a bacon fan! Our party had the pastrami, chili cheese fries, chicken noodle soup, French onion soup and burgers (with fries). The "NYC" or large pastrami was good. Not too much fat and was an interesting interpretation, more like a smoked brisket sandwich with their special mustard / mayo sauce - but delicious and melt in your mouth. The burgers and fries were excellent with real cheese and caramelized onions. Desserts included chocolate malt, a sundae and the chocolate hazelnut cream pie. You have to have dessert here. We found out that the diner is named after the 1942 Edward Hopper painting "Nighthawks". I'd been wanting to come back here since the Yelp event in January. I was only slightly hesitant because some of the dishes are expensive for what one might consider "diner" food, and I was anticipating ~$75 bill. Unbeknownst to me though, Wednesday night, which is our date night, also happens to be Nighthawks date night special! Our wonderful waitress Ann (who reminded me so much of my grandma!) informed us of the special and it was a no brainer: an app, two beers (each! or a bottle of wine to split, or a mix such as a glass of wine and a beer), choice from 2 entrees, and a dessert to split. FOR $34!! Um, yes! So we did that, obviously. Went with the buffalo cauliflower for the app which was just as good as I remembered, and my husband really enjoyed too. The entree choices were a kimchi and avocado burger or their grains bowl. The burger just sounded too good so we both got that. And damn was it a good burger, probably top 5 that either of us have had. The fries were cooked and salted perfectly as well. We cleaned our plates, then shared a chocolate strawberry ice cream pie for the dessert. I'd say this was close to a perfect night - ambiance was pleasant, noise level was tolerable, Ann was amazing, the food was delicious, and the bill was cheap. I and others sat outside at the tables in front of the establishment waiting for someone to wait on us. Eventually I asked someone inside and was told that no service was given for the tables in the front. She then walked away without saying a word to the party of 3 still waiting out front, so I let them know. I was then seated out back in a lovely back patio area. I ordered my food and enjoyed my beverage while waiting. I then totally lost my appetite as I watched my waitress mingle with another table who had brought their dog into the restaurant. The dog was small and was fed from plates while sitting on their table and then the waitress greeted the dog by scratching and petting the dog with bare hands and then continued to serve food to patrons immediately after with those same hands! I was so grossed out I couldn't eat my food. No staff were wearing masks. read more

We chose Nighthawks to host a Friday afternoon reception for 30 people after my daughter's wedding last week, and all of our guests were very impressed! The sliders and especially the mac and cheese were delicious. The service was excellent, especially the pouring of champagne. The atmosphere in the private dining/bar area was perfect. Wes and his friendly, accomodating staff made sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable, fun experience. Many of us will be sure to visit Nighthawks again! read more

Enjoyed my visit. Cool place, clean. Chili was everything I want chili to be. Critiques: Pastrami, not so much- Hardly any actual pastrami in it at all. I had to double check the photos online to make sure it was a fluke. Even for "mpls" sized you kind of assume a pastrami's going to have more then 4 slices in it. Prices are high. Most everything's high-bucked. Hop around town and you can get the same quality food for a few bucks cheaper. No big deal but it's pretty obvious and seems a'bit desprate, sorry. Overall a good place. There's a ton of menu items I'd like to try and I'll be back. read more
