They had me at footlong hotdog. I came on a weekday to meet a friend. Good thing I was there 15 minutes before 5:30pm, because that's when the place started to fill up. I recommend coming early to get a parking spot on the street, table, and to take advantage of happy hour! I really like this diner. I've seen some "remodeled" diners, and new ones, lately that still looked like shit holes, a pig with lipstick, a beat face. Not Nighthawks, they did it right. It's got the diner feel, but it's clean, cool, and modern. Great beer list. They can't serve full on hard liquors in the neighborhood, but they've got some specialty drinks with beer involved. I ate a lot on this visit. Homemade potato chips with onion dip, $3. I have a serious addiction to this combo in general. Theirs were good. Do it. I tried the Nighthawks footlong, with beer on HH. The meat on this link was so damn flavorful. It stood its ground against the bold flavors of dill mayo, horseradish havarti, peppers, mustard, and crunchy shoestrings. I still tasted that pork. Yum. Caesar steak tartar. This is a MUST. Best combo ever. I am so in love with this dish. Chicken bacon ranch sandwich. This is no McD's sandwich. Might have been my favorite chicken sandwich ever. Double cheeseburger. Gooey cheese melting down all around. Grease glistening off the bun. Juicy meat. Screams America. We opted for coleslaw with the burger, it had good seasoning, but it was watery. French fries with blue cheese, onions, and balsamic, this was a disappointment. Way too salty and sweet. Pass on these. To make sure I ate until I was on the verge of puking I ordered the chocolate hazelnut cream pie, my friend had the apple pie with cheddar crust and five spice. Apple pie sucked, no flavor and mushy apples. That cream pie though, next time I may as well ask for the whole damn pie. Service was phenomenal! I forgot the girls name, but she needs a raise and promotion. Prices were a tad high I thought, $12 for a footlong hotdog. At HH, you can get it for $10 with a beer, that's the way to go. After seeing several of my most trusted Yelp buddies checking in here and posting some pretty food porny pictures along with pretty decent reviews, I made a mental note to expedite my own visit. Plus, hi, anything open late that calls itself a diner and has at least some all-day breakfast options is always going to be of interest to me. So. It's not a big place. As others have said, you either sit bar side or you sit in the other room where the kitchen is viewable either from tables or counter stools. We got lucky and wandered in on a Wednesday night with no wait. I already had a pretty good idea of what I wanted but gave my husband the courtesy of a few minutes to peruse the menu. While he was looking, the homemade ginger brew caught my eye and was so intriguing that I bypassed the really (REALLY) good beer list to try that instead. If you like ginger flavor, and I mean real natural ginger with a good bite to it, you will love this drink. However, if you don't like ginger or don't like strong flavors, or you are thinking it's like ginger ale, stay away. I personally loved it. So foodwise, I got the salmon and eggs breakfast, which had my attention ever since I saw a photo of it because there are salmon eggs on the top of it and I LOOOVE salmon eggs. Plus, as we all know, I do love a good benedict type deal. So our waiter won the prize for best waiter interaction in recent memory when I ordered and he immediately said, "Just so you know, that's not served hot." And I looked at him for a second like he was kind of stupid and said, "Um, OK." And then he smiled and said, "Well you know. Minnesotans. It freaks some of them out." I LOLed for like five minutes. The actual dish was really good, but I could see how some people wouldn't like it. It was like a cross between a good old East Coast schmear and a eggs Benedict. There's a toasted English muffin that's smeared with a chivey cream cheese type spread. That's topped with big piles of beautiful smoked salmon and then this sauce that's a combo of eggs and Hollandaise. It's like eggier-than-normal Hollandaise. And then it's topped with plentiful piles of salmon eggs. It's pretty much a dish made for me. I will say that I did kind of miss breaking open a beautifully poached egg and having the yolk ooze everywhere, but the dish itself was marvelous. I ate every bite. My husband got the Blue Plate special, which rotates daily. On Wednesday's it's ribs and mac and cheese. The ribs were good. The mac and cheese was phenomenal. Like a huge crock of the cheesiest, silkiest, gooey-est mac and cheese -- like, if you could think of the richest, most decadent version of Kraft Mac, that's what it was like. They should really just sell it on its own. They'd sell tons of it. It was so good that I actually stole a bite before I even dug into my own food and literally stuck my fingers into the empty pot to wipe up some of the leftover cheese that my husband left behind before our dishes were cleared. That's how good it was.. I finally had a plate in front of me that I'd been thinking about eating for at least a week and chose to take a bite of his food first.. Damn. Now I'm hungry. We managed to talk ourselves into dessert -- strawberry rhubarb pie (good) and chocolate hazelnut pie (better). Everything is obviously homemade. The crust was good but a bit more crumbly than flaky for my personal liking. But you had better bet it tasted good. Additional props for our waiter (Nate C per my receipt) who offered great service in addition to the funny Minnesotan comment. Other notes: I loved that the chef himself delivered our food to our table. It really showed the attention to detail and the care to put into the food. And mad props for the glassware -- I spotted a Central Waters glass, a Clown Shoes glass and several Surly glasses. I love small places that have big time beer lists. Hmmm... Max, something just didn't feel right today, at brunch. I walked in and went to the kitchen bar and sat down, no greetings from the chef's, no greetings from any of the wait staff. I had to ask for coffee and a menu. I even had to ask for water, that's a first. And even after that, it was far too long before I saw an actual menu from you waiter. Ugh, I hope my trip to Nighthawks last night is not indicative of where the restaurant is going... I've been to Nighthawks a coupe times and have normally enjoyed my experience, but last night was something else. It was 10pm on a Saturday night when we walked over to Nighthawks. There was a big sign out on the sidewalk advertising a late night happy hour. Score! Or not... although the sign was strategically placed outside, there is no Saturday night happy hour (even though the diner was pretty empty). Happy hour was also advertised above the bar, again without a weekday designation. It seemed like false advertising since something had to specifically bring the sign outside... We decided to stay because I was craving pancakes. We ordered drinks and our waitress came back with them. My boyfriend ordered a Coors Light, but the waitress brought him over a bottle of Mich Golden Light. She asked him if it was okay, but he felt obligated to take it since it was already open. Right as we were about to order food, our waitress decided to inform us of everything they were out of, including PANCAKES! :( Oh well... instead we decided to split the cheeseburger and fries, with the special sauce on the side. When our cheeseburger came out, it had the sauce on the burger AND on the side. My boyfriend wasn't able to eat his half of the burger because of the special sauce. We mentioned this to our server, who did offer to bring us a new burger. At this point, we were kind of over the whole experience, so we passed on it. She was kind enough to take the burger off of our bill, but our experience was not up to par with what I normally would expect from Nighthawks. If I was solely basing my review on last night, I'd give it a 2 (the fries were delicious!), but since we've been before for brunch and enjoyed the food and service, I'll give it a 3 (I really wish they weren't out of the pancakes, I've had them before and they are soo good). I'll be back for Happy Hour since this is in walking distance of my house, and I hope next time is better. Oh boy, I want to come here everyday just to try out their daily specials. But I don't think I can do that because I want to give other places a shot as well. Yes, I have looked up their menu online and I was craving for meatballs and it happened to be on their Tuesday special. Perfect. I didn't care how I dressed. I had a bright yellow Superman t-shirt on and I was on a mission to get my food. I was super hungry inside and I was trying hard not to show it. My friend wasn't hungry, even better I didn't have to share. LOL. We arrived on a Tuesday evening and it was packed. We thought the space to the restaurant was small when we walked in but there is the other side. The first side to the room is the bar seating area and the other room is the open kitchen. I would suggest for the open kitchen so you can see the live action. We sat there. The kitchen is small with two guys and one girl working. Pretty impressive on how they work well together as a team. I watched them made my spaghetti and meatballs. Wow, I must say that was the best meatballs I've ever had. It was very tender. The portion is ridiculously huge, it comes with three BIG meatballs and the sauce is amazing. I couldn't finish my meal, I had to save it for lunch the next day. I had ordered Sweet Child Of Vine beer that was a good combination with my dinner. Too bad I didn't get to try other items. I saw the girl made beef tartar, I told myself, I must come back for it! Seriously, it looked so good. The service we received from them is phenomenal. They are friendly and I like that. This little place is awesome! Came here for lunch with a small team from work. I made reservations with Andrew over the phone. He was very pleasant and helpful to assist in whatever I needed to successfully plan lunch. The decor was very fun and young. We arrived for lunch and Andrew was very friendly and goofy as our server. I ordered the Nighthawks Hot dog referred by our server. It was super yummy! Too much bread in the buns for me but if you rip some corners off its, the ratio of hot dog and bread is perfect. The dog is very skinny but still very juicy. It was hard to eat properly in front of co workers so do not order this if you are on a date. It came with a side of fries and they were not cheap, they gave you PLENTY! They were also fresh and HOT! Speaking of which, we also got chili fries and caramelized onion fries as our appetizer. OMG - order it!!! These are large enough to share so order at least one for your group! In for Sunday brunch, ordered the Classic breakfast with eggs/toast/hashbrowns (hashbrowns were crisp and tasty), Reuben Benedict (needed more kraut and the cornedbeef was cold), and the Chicken and Cornbread (one fried chicken thigh and a pan of cornbread with maple syrup over top). Thoughts: I wanted the chicken and cornbread to be more Southern style. Would have benefitted from the addition of an egg or something with that much cornbread. However, it had a great flavor with the maple syrup on top. Reuben benedict was a bit of a disappointment with the meager kraut and corned beef. My husband was jealous that I ventured here for a Yelp event so I promised him we would brunch together at a later time, so here we are. We arrived around noon on a Sunday and were seated quickly. Service was wonderful throughout and fast. I was so excited to try their Blue Corn Pancakes and completely devastated when they said they were out, buuuuut we tried the chorizo corn pancakes instead which were phenomenal. My husband and I were fighting over who would get the last bite. Literally the perfect balance of sweet and savory. I also tried the eggs Benedict with a side of hashbrowns. Nighthawks KNOWS how to do hashbrowns. They were fresh, homemade, and well seasoned. The eggs Benedict was good, but not the best I've had. Came for dinner and sat on their patio. Disclosure - very loud since you're right on the street. The sun was beating down on us so it's a better idea to sit inside. Tried the nighthawks hot dog. It's all bun so if you're not a big bread person, the hot dogs probably aren't for you. I love bread though so I enjoyed it! The hot dog is really skinny so even though it's a foot long, it doesn't seem like a lot of meat. The potatoes were a fun addition! My friend tried the burger and he said it was dry. Stopped by recently after Nighthawks popped up in a Yelp search of the neighborhood. Turns out to have been a very good choice. On entry, this seems like a pretty small space but it is more expansive as you wander toward the back and around the corner. It has a homey, local pub vibe. A friend and I started by sharing a generous basket of Buffalo Cauliflower. I guess this has become a thing (see my review of J Selby's). Who knew? Maybe I'm the last Yelper to get clued in to this apparent trend :-) In any case, they were delicious. Maybe not quite the same caliber as J Selby's, but still they hit the spot. I went with their classic cheeseburger that included a side of house cut fries. Both the burger and fries were top notch. For $2 more I requested a side of slaw that for me turned out to be a lackluster addition. Really the only miss of the evening. My pal had the Spicy Fried Chicken sandwich that he found very satisfying. We were disappointed to be told they were out of the Maine Root Ginger Brew. However, the Lemon Lime soda was crisp and refreshing. Service was prompt and cordial. Prices seemed reasonable to me. Noise level fine for conversation. Plenty of free parking on nearby streets. BTW, a few days later when I mentioned I'd been to Nighthawks to another friend of mine I discovered that he's regular. He said that he's a huge fan of their pancakes and was happy to know they had been returned to the dinner menu after apparently having been removed for a period of time. One of our favorite little happy hour spots for late night snacks! We frequent here between 9-11 reverse happy hour and are never disappointed. They have a great food happy hour menu as well as $2 off certain wines and beers and the service is extraordinary. Sloppy joe - $4 - 5/5 This continues to be the thing I eat in 4 bites when I go here... mind you it is not made for 4 bites but it is meaty and savory and delicious and has a baked beans flavor to it that goes so well on a bun Foot long with a beer - $10 - 5:5 Probably the best deal here... choose from 4 foot long dogs and then choose from any beer on the menu... I ordered a dog $12 value and a surly 10%er $7-10 value for $10 total... so you get my drift! Do it but beware there is a lot of pickled stuff here! Fried chicken Kimchee sandwich - $6 - 5/5 Girlfriends favorite, super pickled, super delicious fried and you can't go wrong. DO IT! House made potato chips - $3 - 5/5 Think thinly sliced, fried to perfection but some may still be chewed (which I love) and then dip it in home made French onion dip (think top the tater but like real... not in a container) All in all. I've been a fan of Nighthawks' food for a while, their carrot dog is an amazing creation and I still don't quite understand how they make it taste so good...but its still a carrot?! Incredible. The blueberry pancakes are delicious as well. The atmosphere is super cute, very "Minneapolis" and the in person service is always fun. We've also picked up giftcards for some friends and they were a hit. Happy Hour M-F 4-6pm: $10 for a beer ($6 value) and signature footlong (not your average hot dog)! If you really need to know more than that, read on... I came here at 5pm with a friend on a Monday, and we were seated at a table immediately. I love the setup in here - it's retro yet modern, if that makes any damn sense. I checked out the menu and planned around hitting up the HH hotdogs, and I ordered mine with a Boulder Shake Chocolate Porter. I was excited to try both the Krazmarczuk's dogs and the famous carrot dog. Our Sonoran and Nighthawks dogs came out, and they looked stunning covered in a copious amount of colorful toppings. However, our Nighthawks was not a requested carrot dog, so the server was rad enough to bring us out a carrot dog of our choosing - so we got the Galaxy. Ordering a vegetarian hot dog with beef chili on it is so wrong it's right. Out of all of them, the Sonoran dog was my favorite. It had creamy, sweet, and crunchy elote, avocado, pickled onions, and cilantro. The poppy seed buns are a special touch too. The carrot dog was very impressive, especially as a straight-up carrot (not ground up with faux casing). Well done! I did add lettuce and tomato for $2. $2 for lettuce and tomato on a burger that's already $12? That sort of upset me. It seems like errbody and their moms have eaten at Nighthawks, so I made it a point to climb aboard the hype train a few days prior to leaving 'Sota. My judgement? Like Jurassic World (especially that end dinosaur mega-death fight scene, zOMG), it was worth Every. Single. Penny. My take: I. FOOD & DRINK They have blue plate specials, sandwiches, soups, salads, hot dogs, pancakes, and fried goodies. They also have a decent list of unique beers, signature cocktails, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages. I started with their Caesar Steak Tartare, ended with a French Dip, and washed everything down with a Pineapple Shandy. *Caesar Steak Tartare: Fantastic. The perfectly-made, tooth-some, straight-up seductive pieces of freshly diced meat made me say to myself, "oh-hey. Oh hey, hey! Ugh." (That's code for "this is hella bomb.") Not to forget, the gluttonous egg yolk added to the already bumpin' flavor party. The mini salad, with romaine, Parmesan, and Caesar dressing were cool, too. My only critique? There's no need for the garlicky bread-crumbs. ($13) *French Dip: This is one of the best sandwiches I've had in the Twin Cities. No joke! The bread is perfectly toasted. The gruyere sings. The shallot jam eloquently compliments the savory-ness of the sandwich. Also, how is beef fat mayo not a more popular thing? It's ridiculously tasty! Oh, and that dip gave me dirty food porn thoughts. xxxYesxxx So how good was it? I would absolutely butcher a chicken with a butter knife -- in the dark -- if it meant having the last French Dip on earth. ($16.50) **Pineapple Shandy: There are a bunch of fancy names in this description, and I don't know what many of them are. What I do know, though, is that this drink is delicious and well-suited for a post-work pick-me-up. Get this. ($8) II. SERVICE I sat at the bar (because that's what you do when it's crazy busy, folks) and was ignored for most of the time. I don't mind all too much, because I understand their busy. My only problem is that when I finally waved the bartender down, he stood in front of me and said, "yeah?" He could've at least said, "what would you like?" Aside from that, though, my server was wonderful. III. ATMOSPHERE/ DÉCOR Bustlin'. Every single table was taken, so unless you make reservations, you should consider sitting at the bar. Waiting is no fun. IV. PRICES I understand that they have to make money and take into account the expensive neighborhood, but I think the prices fall a couple dollars above what I would expect for the type of food. Our dinner experience at Nighthawk's was a bit disappointing. We noticed the prices were a bit high while ordering online. Order confirmation showed food would be ready for pick up in 20 minutes. I had to wait an extra 10 minutes for my order. My family gave the food about a 7 out of 10. Good, but not great. Not worth the additional price compared to nearby competitors. read more

I am not a pancake person. Scratch that. I WAS not a pancake person until the other day when I ate at Nighthawks. Why were these pancakes so important? Because they were SAVORY pancakes, dudes. I had a hard time deciding what to order because everything sounded so great, but ended up getting the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs dish. Then I proceeded to ignore my plate and eat about two-thirds of my husband's food. This is not to say that my eggs weren't good. They were actually great (and I took them home and ate them for dinner). However, the kimchi bacon scallion and chorizo cheddar corn pancakes were TOO amazing. Like a magnet for my mouth. Also, they serve their neighbor's Big Watt cold press on tap and it was maybe the best cold press I've ever tasted. Nighthawks, I am quite a fan of your establishment. You serve classy, yet straightforward food with various blue plate specials, and ALL of the savory pancakes you can ask for. I want to give you a high five for that delicious caesar steak tartare number. I stole of few bites of my boyfriend's egg's bennie, and I wanted to order another for myself. I accidentally ordered the wrong pancakes (Annie D. I was trying to get that delectable combo you had!), and the Cranberry Orange Ginger were just a-okay. I've also tried your feel good chicken noodle soup, which is a great & hearty meal. All in all, food has been really great, however prices do feel a little steep to me, to make this a place I frequent often. Also, it's great that you're only a brief walk from my house, so I can walk off those pancakes on my way home. I do hope to be back soon for happy hour, for that beer and hotdog combo. read more
