It's not very often you made a 19-year-old white girl making sushi! She really knew her stuff and shared that she had been doing this since she was 13 wow! She's a keeper! Everything we ordered was top notch! Excellent sushi and rolls! Loved the tuna, yellowtail, edamame, and specialty rolls! They also have killer saki! We ate dinner here one night during our stay at the resort and the food was just ok and very overpriced. Nine dollars for a miso soup is ridiculous unless it's a whole bowl, which this wasn't. We decided to stay and dine at the hotel, but we did not want to have American cuisine, so we opted for this sushi place. They offer indoor or outdoor seating, and it was pretty quiet when we went. The food was okay at best, but I didn't particularly appreciate that they served me lukewarm miso soup. The waitress provided good service, but the kitchen was very slow. The waitress felt so bad that she comped us a dessert (we did not ask for it). I'm thankful for her kind gesture, however, because the key lime pie she got me was one of the best I have ever had! read more

What an amazing experience we had at this place! We were staying at the Cheeca Lodge hotel for the weekend and had been told it was a must to eat at Nikai. At first, we were worried because the menu is very limited and when we arrived, we were the only ones there, but we were quickly proven wrong. Our server, Gary, has to be one of the most charismatic, friendliest, and funniest people we've ever had serve us. What an incredible guy! He made our experience worthwhile and gave us fantastic recommendations. We started with Gary's suggestion of the off-menu Pork and Shrimp dumplings, which were bursting with flavor. Our favorite was the shrimp--very fresh and packed with shrimp. We then moved on to the drinks where he recommended a great Pinot Noir and even two mocktails (strawberry and watermelon) for the underagers. All the drinks were very good, but we wouldn't order the mocktails again. Onto the rolls--we ordered the Dirty Vegas, The Luxe, Firecracker, and Big Kahuna. (We also ordered the ramen--very flavorful and the broth was fantastic). All the rolls were bursting with flavor, but our collective favorite was the Dirty Vegas, and Gary agreed. We finished the night with another off-menu item--a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream coated in hard shell chocolate and drowned in hot fudge. Even the non-chocolate lovers enjoyed this dessert. It was rich but not overly sweet, and the chocolate flavors weren't as potent as you'd think. Tried to make reservations but there phone system was down for a day! After finally reaching someone at front desk they transferred me to same broken phone system. I played this game for a while before being transferred to someone at concierge desk who was able to assist me . We arrived early and had a drink and one of the many hotel bars near the main entrance. The views and feelings after arriving at the Cheeca lodge was amazing! We sat with my party of 9 outdoors on the terrace overlooking the ocean while listening to the live music poolside ! Our server Alysa greeted us. She quickly took our drink orders and told us about the specials. We sat and drank awhile when I politely inform her we had a 80 year old birthday in the group. We also asked her if she had a menu with anything on it that was not sushi or seafood. She informed me she didn't but could make me a steak roll with Lobster in it?? (Um lobster is seafood) . While having some apps I approached the restaurant manager and told him our situation and asked him if we could order from one of the other in house property restaurants. He said he could make it happen. Our sushi dinners arrived beautifully plated and with the freshest ingredients. The fish was melt in your mouth good and accompanied by the perfect sauces for each roll. Would say it's one of the better sushi meals I have had! The saki we ordered was refreshing. The steak dinner was delivered and it was perfectly cooked and paired with whipped potatoes and mushrooms. The manager came out and asked us how everything was, and also wanted the correct spelling of the birthday boys name . Very nicely done. After our meal we were greeted by our server with a key lime pie birthday pie candle and all. The waitress walked away but only one problem the candle was not lit. After several minutes she returned as we were waiting to sing . We asked her if she had a lighter and her response was no she lent it to the chef and he never returned it!!!! Wait what just happened???? If you didn't have a lighter why bring the desert with a candle in it, also if the chef barrows it and you know where it was ask for it back then bring us the pie, Either way poor excuses used on her behalf. Being at such a high end , basically all inclusive resort I would have though better of the the services. Food was delicious but service was less than acceptable. I would say I would not go back based on the fact it was a one and done for me . Perhaps try another restaurant on the grounds!! My 4 star review is solely on quality of food and not the service. Then we ordered our sushi and we waited an additional 45 minutes to an hour for the sushi to get to the table. We noticed other tables that sat after us received their food before us which is always a red flag. I did ask the waitress why there was such a long wait and she told us they were very busy. By this time we were one of 3 tables outside and hardly any tables were seated inside. Honestly, the fish was incredibly fresh, but it was hard to enjoy since the rice was so hard and old tasting. :/ it was a little disappointing to pay $22 for a roll of sushi and have hard sushi rice. My boyfriend and I were here last weekend for Memorial Day and we liked the place so much, we came back the next day. You must make a reservation if you are not a Cheeca Lodge guest. The grounds are lovely with the restaurant on a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Very beautiful at sunset. The food was delicious. We enjoyed a cucumber salad, a torched avocado, tuna poke , shrimp and tuna tempura roll and a spicy salmon roll. All the dishes were fresh and beautifully presented. Our waitress did a great job pacing the meal and she was attentive without interrupting our discussion. The tiger roll is completely raw normally I'd steer clear of a raw roll however this one was fantastic very fresh fish. The sushi chef was friendly and creative and we sampled five different rolls as well as ordering "sushi boats" for our kids that were great...including soup, California Rolls, salad, etc. All very good quality and creative rolls. Only issue was that the service was inattentive, failed to check on us with any frequency, and we were charged for an order we never received. Service certainly needs improvement. Anyone that gives this place less than 5 stars doesn't know what they are doing and are morons. This place is literally a Gem in the keys. I have eaten sushi at some of the most revered place for sushi and this crushes them. Not only on presentation and taste which is second to none, but on the staff as well. The first night I ate here (I went back again the next night) I ordered the bonzia roll and a few other rolls. All were excellent. Now let's talk about the mind blowing second night. I left it up to the Master Sushi chefs behind the bar, Dana and Emilio. The sushi masters team up to make the most amazing creations in taste and presentation I have ever had. These guys need to open their own place. They are to sushi like Batman is to Gotham. Morimoto should be losing sleep over these two. If you go to cheeca lodge and don't go to have dinner here, you will not die happy. You will always be wondering what the best sushi place is for your entire life and who would want to do that?....this place is bucket list good, next to climbing Mt. I do not usually write critical reviews - especially about local restaurants - however, I want to be fair and honest. We were going to dinner with friends for my husband's birthday and looking forward to trying a 'new sushi' place - at least one that none off us had gone to recently - and since it is at one of our favorite resorts - Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada, Florida Keys - we figured we could not go wrong. We did! Driving up to the resort we were greeted by the security guard at the gate - who is beyond friendly. A great first impression as to what to expect (usually). He heard we were going to the sushi restaurant and recommended we try the Lux Roll and sent us on in. Self parking is easy and free in a beautiful setting. Entering the lobby is fabulous - they have done a wonderful job in renovating since Hurricane Irma in Sept 2017. Open, airy, clean and welcoming with a very relaxing tropical feel. The lobby bartender was welcoming and helpful in finding our way to the restaurant. The entrance to Nikai is bland. In fact we thought we were walking into a meeting room on the second floor at the top of the stairs. Just a little plaque on the wall with name. The Hostess stand is at the door - again nothing fancy. When we arrived there was nobody in the restaurant. I don't remember if they had music for ambiance or water sounds (something relaxing)...nothing. We all mentioned how dark and dim it was also. We had reservations for 7 PM on a Saturday night and were running 15 minutes late and had added 1 person to the group. We called 30 minutes prior to let them know both. They had not changed the table to add the extra person so we had to help in pushing tables together and adding the chair upon arriving to our table. We ate on the patio - which is a beautiful setting - with views of the famous Cheeca Pier. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze and cooler air. All was good except it was dark. No lights near our table, no candles on the table, so we all had our cell phones out to read the menu. In fact, there was nothing on the table except a dish with a napkin, chop sticks, water glass, dish and small bowl at each place eating. No other decorations. The service was friendly but slow. When asking for drinks - many wanted Sake - only to be told that they had none - even though the menu had several drinks on it. She said the delivery had not been made. So we opted for other drinks. One friend ordered red wine - which he promptly returned after taking one sip. He said it tasted like it had been sitting open for a week. The second glass was not much better but he drank it. My husband ordered the 22 oz beer that was again on the menu (it was his birthday and he was not driving)...only to be told they did not have it but they had a smaller bottle and he could get two. My friend and I ordered a White Dragon (Belvedere Grapefruit Vodka, Triple Sec, Simple Syrup, Fresh Lime Juice, White Cranberry Juice, Sake and Orange Zest) because it sounded delicious and refreshing. At $14 we though it would be great....wrong again. It tasted like grape juice - very sugary, watery and no zing to it at all. I guess it did not have the Sake in it either since they did not have any. The appetizers were nothing special. We ordered an avocado with tuna something that sounded delicious on paper but did not quite hit the mark on the table. Half an avocado with a spoonful of diced tuna - no flavor at all - on a plate of white rice. The cucumber salad came with shredded reddish which my friend said was good. The Rolls for dinner left ALOT to be desired! All came out on appetizer sized plates with no decorations or a side that would make it interesting. It was also so dark you could not see what you were going to eat so out came the cell phone flashlights again. Some people ordered the Lux Roll that the security guard had mentioned. It was sweet ginger garlic steak and lobster salad with wasabi aioli, sweet soy & tempura crunchies in a roll. The meat was tender and you could not taste the lobster that was supposed to be in it. It was covered with Panko bread crunchies which was all I could taste when I tried my husband's. I had a Big Kahuna roll that was supposed to have tuna & avocado topped with lobster salad, pineapple ginger glaze & toasted macadamia. One bite and I gave up. It tasted like mush and rubber for some reason. No flavor. And again, the presentation was a roll on an appetizer sized plate. The service - although friendly - was slow. We had to ask for water several times, no server came to clear the table or to check on us unless we asked for something. Several other tables around us had to do the same. I am hoping that this review will help the restaurant take note that you need more than a beautiful surrounding to get return customers...especially in a resort town where locals are your best source of recommendations. read more

This place is so cool! Amazing and classy atmosphere, with excellent food. This is the only sushi place around with a full bar, so lets start with that, lol. Edamame appetizer was a great choice to get us started. We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed chatting with Chef Emilio. We followed his suggestions and chose the happy buddah, tropic roll and the bonsai. All three were amazing. So flavorful and fresh. Desert was a difficult choice so we chose two. Brownie gelato sundae and hummingbird cake. YUMM! This is an upscale restaurant at an upscale resort. It is not cheap (but who wants cheap sushi)? You get what you pay for! Its not a rushed dinner, its a dinning experience. If you are local, relax and enjoy. After driving around the island to only find packed restaurants we ended up craving sushi. My husband and I were celebrating his 38th birthday and couldn't of had a better meal. We had the most amazing view with live music and 5 star service. Even as we pulled into the resort we could tell it was better than we thought. The sushi was fresh and full of exotic flavors. We did the "omakase" which is a Chefs sushi tasting. OMG! So glad we did because I could of eaten every one of those tastings as an entire meal. The chef also made an extra roll at the end. Reading through the reviews, they are very different from before Hurricane Irma to after the hurricane - I'm gathering there is likely a new chef. Our meal was so-so. Nice ambiance, friendly service but they didn't get our order right. The dishes are beautiful but lacking in flavor. The tuna/avocado appetizer with wontons was unique and good. The rolls just did not have a "pop" to them - they were bland. My husband ordered tuna nigiri but instead was brought a mixed plate of nigiri and left half of it on his plate - not flavorful and not to his liking. We went here for our anniversary because we were staying at the Cheeca Lodge. We had high expectations and unfortunately they were far from met. We waited an exceedingly long time for our food with no explanations or apologies. The menu is extremely limited -- especially for sushi (avoid this place if tuna and shrimp rolls aren't your favorites.) The flavors and presentation of our meal also a lot to be desired. I'm giving two stars instead of one because the ambience was really quite lovely and romantic. If you are looking for good sushi and excellent service, choose somewhere else. read more

This place was one of our favorite places for dinner during our trip. The sushi was amazingly fresh and delicious, and we got a decent number of pieces per roll (our party of 2 was stuffed with 3 rolls). We also had the squid salad and blueberry/mango mojitos- definitely recommend. The chef seems very passionate about his work, and the sushi came out like a piece of art. The outside area has a gorgeous view of the water and would be perfect for a sunset meal. The waitress staff also was very attentive and kind. Tuna poke with wontons was very good, loved the crunchy macadamia nuts over the top. Scallops with spicy aioli, masago and garlic ginger sauce was my favorite! The happy Buddha roll ($16) was plenty big and the tempura shrimp inside was crispy good. You can dine inside or outside overlooking the ocean - it's a spectacular view. The sushi was good but the service was less than impressive. We were staying at The Cheeca and we're excited to try the sushi restaurant. We checked in at the hostess stand earlier in the afternoon and told us they opened at 6pm and recommended we dine the earlier the better. Having missed lunch, this seemed like a good recommendation. We arrived shortly after 6pm and besides another couple sitting at the bar, we were the only other patrons there. Cozy atmosphere we were seated right away and handed menus. There was a large wine cellar stocked floor to ceiling but we opted for cocktails. I perused the wine menu anyway and noted several options that would've suited my palette. We started with some edamame while we relaxed and chatted and decided on rolls. I think she had the song stuck in her head because wifey ordered "one night in Bangkok", lol. I had a Bonsai roll which is soft shell crab and avocado topped with spicy tuna. I also had a Tiger roll which was spicy tuna and cucumber topped with avocado and salmon. Both were amazing. Here's where the 2 stars came from. Since wifey sampled a couple pieces of my 2 rolls I was still a little hungry and ordered a Firecracker rolls which was spicy salmon, cream cheese and jalapeño. I only know this from the menu because the roll never came out. After waiting a half hour and downing another double crown royal I decided to cut my losses and cash out. A waiter handling other tables noticed my apparent frustration and brought my check. Low and behold the roll I never got was on their and then our waitress reappeared after being M.I.A for what seemed like 30 minutes. She apologized and offered to send up free dessert to our room to which I refused but wifey really wanted so we paid and split. $125 not including tip for the dinner and drinks, utter disappointment! read more

We thought they closed at 11 (thanks goole!! But they close at 10, so we felt bad being there past 10, we arrived at around 830). We did the Omakase which is the chefs choice!! I have allergies so what they offered me was different most times than what my husband and friend got. I had the miso soup which was ok. I can't even remember all of the courses, but the luxe and Marlin were amazing!!! Everyone loved it. There were some rounds that maybe you didn't like so much, but it was due to preference not due to taste. We were excited to check out this place because of the good reviews and things people were saying. Let me just say, I am so disappointed that I went through the trouble of downloading the yelp app and registering an account just so I can review this place. First of all, there were 6 guests in the entire restaurant and two sushi chefs which one looked like he was being trained. I ordered a veggie hand roll and a shrimp tempura roll and asked the chef to get creative for the shrimp tempura roll. My fiancé ordered the tiger roll. It took 30 minutes for our two rolls to come out. When it was delivered they had both rolls on the same plate and my hand roll was still missing but was told it will be coming out. For $18-20/roll we were expecting big rolls or at least rolls with substance and placed on individual plates. Neither. The rolls were at best the size of your local cheap sushi buffet and very loosely put together.. Sloppy. We were livid! Figured we would just hurry up and eat, pay and get out and consider this a loss. I start eating only to discover shrimp shells and tails in every single piece of my sushi. Hand roll still missing and never showed up so I cancelled it. Showed the server the shells and tails in my roll and he says the chef says that it's "traditional" to leave the shell and tail on and that some American restaurants may take it off but they don't (keep in mind, neither sushi chefs were Asian).. Yes traditional to have the tail STICKING OUT of the roll so that it can be easily plucked off. Not ROLLED into your sushi. They didn't offer any compensation or any customer service whatsoever.. Instead they vehemently stood by their justification. $45 later and we feel ripped off and still hungry. Avoid this place!!!!!!!!! Our first red flag was how empty the place was. Not worth the money and these reviews on the net about this place must be written by people who have never had sushi before. Or maybe they fired the old sushi chefs. No idea but this place is an expensive disappointment and the pictures on yelp of the sushi here is not what you get...wish I took pictures but it was so pathetic I didn't Check out Kaiyo grill and sushi just 1/2 mile south of cheeca.. The fish here was great! Rally great. They have a head chef that has very high standards. I had a live scallop app that blew me away. But the service was kind of sad and the edamame was very weird. It was really great in some aspect and very poor in others. They to need to balance it out. I'd go back for sure read more
