Our first day back this winter & the family said let's go see J.R. Dad. J.R. Is one of the two founders & considered by many as a Sushi genius. Driving up to this place at the end of a small shopping center caused me to pause & reconsider our choice for dinner. Since we were a party of six and it was late, we decided to go in. Charming restaurant in a strip mall near mile marker 88. Busy on a Saturday and I called earlier in the day and was told they were booked out. Appreciated the management's honesty and said maybe next time. An hour later they called back stating they had a cancel and could welcome us at a convenient time (big move in my book). Waiter (Nikko) was very warm and helpful with suggestions and selecting the meal. We had cocktails and appetizers and they were all high end. Personally think this is the best sushi/asian fusion place in the keys. The portions are pretty big, fish is very fresh, staff is friendly, prices are reasonable, interior is modern Japanese. My favorite dish would probably be the tuna fried rice BUT we only tried 4 dishes so I would definitely try the pork belly rice next time. read more

I was so excited to bring my daughter and new husband here for our honeymoon. Everything was just as good as I remembered it. The flavors of all of the dishes were amazing. Food was amazing we had the spicy tuna crispy roll and the shrimp dumpling miso soup (on the spicy side) both were delicious! We sat a little far from everyone and close to the entrance, which is not as fun, but I guess we didn't have a choice since we didn't have a reservation and had a large group. Yes it's located in one of those unassuming Florida strip malls, but the moment you cross the threshold you've arrived somewhere else. Somewhere very sexy and fun. The staff is friendly. The music is awesome. We were lucky enough to come for happy hour with half off all champagne, so we splurged on Veuve Cliquot. The spicy edamame had us tasting so we could try to replicate. I convinced my dining companion, who doesn't eat shellfish or red meat, to try the bao buns with duck. Perfect blend of flavors with very well shredded duck. All of their specialty rolls sound great. Several can be made larger for $8 more. We selected the Plaza 88 with spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado, fish and an incredible sauce. Out of this world. I wasn't ready for the fun to end, so the server offered to make me a spicy watermelon jalapeño martini. Chef's kiss. I look forward to my return whenever I'm in the Keys for dinner. read more

The sushi bar seating seems to be the premier seating as you get to enjoy the master chefs create beautiful & tasty dishes. We had a great table and still enjoyed the view of the masters. Really nice selection of wines and crafty sake drinks. Oh the food.... We tried and loved the shashito peppers, the crispy rice tuna & salmon, the duck bao buns, and the pork belly fried rice!! We were a large party of 14 last night, seated at two long tables. There was also another large party of 8 seated at a table by the entrance. There were people seated at the bar and a few other tab,es of 4. It seems they only had two servers and half our party was waited on by one and half by another. Our other table got their drinks and our table was still waiting for our drink order to be taken. Our food order was taken at the same time as our drink order. On Thursdays, they have a special for locals where you can choose from 5 rolls and a glass of bubbly for $15. I think most everyone at our table took advantage as well as ordered additional items. Glad I did as the California roll was 5 pieces. I ordered the pork dumplings jar. Items came out at different speeds. Some got everything all at once. Our other table was pretty much finished and several people at our table were finished, while one person was still waiting for his order. He had to repeatedly ask about it and was assured it was coming. It was obvious the order was never placed. He received his avocado tower after everyone else had finished. Absolutely everything was tasty. Presentation is flawless. Portions are small for the price. Plan on spending minimally $60-$75 per person, not including drinks. Only a couple items are under $20. A small Perrier is $6, while a bottle of Fiji is $12! A Coke is $5 and Boba tea is $10. While the offerings were impressive, I felt Shima was not the 5 star experience I expected. They definitely need more servers. They were overwhelmed. The inside was busy, maybe even bustling. It was loud. That killed the vibe. read more

First off, wanna say, this is my first review ever. Wife and I are both still local and conchs. This was her preferred date night spot. Tonight disappointed. As obviously previous trips didn't, zero complaints. But right off the rip when u order a tequilla watermelon drink and you hear the waitress in back going, "hey, we are outta tequilla, can I make this with rum?" It sets off red flags. We received the drink, no mention of outta tequila and A rum substitute from waitress. drink was delivered, def not as ordered. Second, all I'm gonna say is, start using fresh fish again! My cat wouldn't eat the fish with how old it musta been. Marker 88 roll was worst. And I say this, having had it atleast 3 times before. Do better! read more

Food was high quality with a dynamic menu. Everything from that point was lacking. We reserved a table for 5 but staff first tried to sit us at a table with only room for 4. The restaurant was very cold inside. When I asked to have the air conditioning turned down or made warmer I was told not possible. Every party was cold by watching many of the patrons wrapping their arms around themselves. The service lacked everything. Starting with getting our order incorrect. Next we waited over an hour to be served. The restaurant was full but there was plenty of wait staff working. Our server disappeared and never returned to the table for the entire hour. Finally we received our meal but the server brought us more food than we ordered. When the bill was brought to the table of course the server added the food we didn't order. It now took the server another 15 minutes to correct his mistake. Food was very good but the total experience was bad. No worries, won't be returning. I'm sure there are better sushi restaurants in the area. read more

Finally!! My Florida Keys sushi prayers have been answered ;) This place is not just fresh and delicious, but also pleasant and aesthetically pleasing. Attention to detail from food presentation down to utensils, which I surely notice and appreciate! Nigiri practically melted in my mouth and it's possible the crispy smoked octopus salad changed my life, maybe... if any regret I have at all it is not saving room for dessert, but surely that's a great excuse to come back... and the cherry on top of having a new local sushi spot to frequent is its friendly staff that makes the time there even more enjoyable.
