I thought the food here was decent and was decently authentic to my surprise. There isn't that much Asian food in Marathon so this place has great potential. We were aware of the service needing to take a bit longer, but it took way too longer to our surprise. There's a sign out on the front which says that you should be expected to wait at least 45 minutes. We came around 4:40 right when they opened and we waited almost 2 hours for our food which probably the longest I've had to wait before at a restaurant. I think some of the operations and logistics could be worked a little bit better with coordination between the front/back/maybe hire 1-2 more people since I thought the food was decent especially in an area with limited Asian food and they were turning people away after us since they couldn't keep up. With some restructuring, I would say they would have a lot of potential. I tried the spring rolls, Red curry w/ Chicken, and the Pad See Ew and I thought the dishes were all great. We ordered at a "Thai spicy level", but it was just right amount of spice and not too spicy.

It was my first time here and Although I was told that the wait for pickup would be one hour they where right on point, once I arrived it took another 6 minutes for my food to cone out, let msg say it was worth the wait. Well priced and the flavors will have you coming back for more.

    Disputed with bank for refund

We moved to Marathon 2yrs ago and started ordering from this restaurant on a weekly basis. The food is tasty and decent but nothing extraordinary. The wait times that everyone left a review about are true. Dining in or takeout times are often over 1.5hrs and food portions are extremely small. You will be lucky to find more than 10 small pieces of chicken shreds in your "anything chicken" dish !!! I have written a few reviews (positive/negative) on many local restaurants around here. But I never wrote one for this restaurant since there was nothing majorly negative or positive for me to contribute. However we had a very bad experience last week that has forced me to write this review now: 2 times in the past 3 months our take out order of $80-90 was charged to our bank account as $110-120. Luckily we had our original receipt and contacted Takara. They confirmed on their end that our take-out order was $80-90 and insisted that the amount they charged us was correct and therefore they can not refund us any money. We had to contact our bank and email them the receipt to get our $20-30 refund. However we always assumed this was just a honest mistake on their part. (see pictures of 1 of these UNAUTHORIZED extra tips that they added by themselves. There was 1 more time) Last week we ordered our weekly dishes and went there after 2hrs to pickup. Surprisingly we noticed that our order of $101 had a tip of $21 added to it for a total of $122. We brought this up with the cashier who apologized and said "the system didn't recognize the take out and therefore charged you a tip automatically". Then he went ahead and corrected the bill and we paid $101 plus a tip of $5 for a total of $106. When we got home our phone rang and it was the owner from Takara. We thought that he is calling to apologize for the mistake. Instead he very rudely started to address us as if we had shorted him on his bill. He was demanding that we pay the $21 tip which he insisted should be included even for take out orders. We told him about the past issues with the overcharge before as well and he confirmed that it was them deliberately charging the extra $20-30 as a tip previous times. We politely explained to him that this policy does not make any sense and paying that much tip for a take out order will discourage us from ordering from them weekly. His reply was "nobody needs you business" All I can say is be careful how you treat your customers. You are the only Oriental/Chinese/Thai food in town now and can maybe get away with being so arrogant and rude. But once a competition comes to town, no one will tolerate this. We will never order from this place ever again!! The Owner responded to my review on other websites and accused us of yelling and using inappropriate language inside the restaurant. Just so sad that they have now resorted to lies. We would never do such a thing as our parents raised us to be polite and we are teaching the same to our 3 young boys!!!

Oh my gosh. The best spicy tune I've had in a very long time. In fact, they did it slightly different than anywhere I've ever been. So good. Great service. Quaint restaurant with good local made food.

We sat outside hoping to see the manatees at one point- never saw them. We ordered the lobster enchiladas, shrimp Reuben, and blackened lionfish with coleslaw and potato salad. Lobster enchiladas tasted like nothing- the shell was also oddly dry and unpleasant. I tried to drown it in the sauce, rice and beans, but honestly, almost everything on our table lacked salt and flavor. Can't believe they said Guy Fieri liked this. The bottom of the shrimp Reuben was soggy that it started falling apart. There was like 4 shrimp inside. This one was probably the most flavorful- but I still wasn't impressed. Lastly, I knew lionfish needs a lot of seasoning, and having blackened lionfish helps. But the sides (the coldslaw and the potato salad) were....so so so disappointing. A review said it felt like they were eating cafeteria food- that's exactly what I felt as well. Really appreciate the server for being so attentive and kind- they even brought over another slice of key lime pie (we only ordered one) because it was taking a while- definitely didn't expect it but appreciated the sweet gesture. For the price of it all, I paid similar for a wonderfully delicious seafood meal the other day so quite disappointed it didn't come up to par.

It wasn't the best meal we've ever had, but it was definitely the best food we had during our trip. Our favorites were the conch fritters, which were delicious, and the Angus cheeseburger, which was honestly the best thing we ordered. The mussels were also excellent and full of flavor. The shrimp ceviche was decent, but it could have used a little more seasoning, citrus, or zest. It felt a bit dry and didn't have the bright, fresh flavor I was expecting. The seafood platter was the biggest disappointment, especially considering the price. The mahi was under seasoned, and the texture wasn't enjoyable. The crab cakes had a fishy taste, and while the scallops were just okay, the shrimp was actually very good. The sweet potato side was delicious, but overall the platter didn't feel like a good value for what was served. Overall, despite a few misses, this was still the best dining experience we had in the Keys. The service was good, and there were enough standout dishes that we'd come back. I'd recommend sticking with the conch fritters, mussels, Angus cheeseburger, and shrimp.

The lobster roll was good but had more roll than lobster. The lobster chowder was better than the lobster bisque I had at a different restaurant but still not as good as what I make at home. I tried the famous lobster Rueben. It was toasted perfectly on rye. It was fine but I think the sauerkraut over powers the lobster when the lobster needs to be the star of the sandwich. The beating I had here was probably the coconut shrimp with mango sauce. It was perfection. Deliciously crispy and the mango chutney was perfect with it. After we finished eating we went into the seafood market to check out their fresh seafood selection and grabbed a pie of key lime pie to go which comes in a little tart tin. It was really good flavored and the crust was obviously homemade. Not your typical graham cracker crust which was a nice change.

We were seated at a picnic table with a fan which makes the heat bearable in late July. Our waitress came to take our orders right away as we were on the edge of happy hour ending to see if we wanted drinks or food from the specials. Our dinner at Mahina was, unfortunately, a very disappointing two-star experience…read more From the moment we arrived, the restaurant felt much more casual than the website and photos suggested. We waited at an unattended host stand while maybe five (?) employees walked by and told us someone would be with us shortly, yet no one actually helped us until other guests began lining up behind us. I had a reservation and when we got there requested an outdoor table, I was told the patio was fully booked and we could move outside if there were no-shows. However, numerous set outdoor tables remained empty throughout our entire meal, making that explanation frustrating. After being seated, we ordered drinks and were told the smoker for the smoked Old Fashioned was broken. If a signature cocktail is featured on the menu, I would expect a backup option when equipment isn't working. There is also a disconnect between Mahina's branding and its menu. The restaurant markets itself as Polynesian-inspired. Instead, the menu is overwhelmingly American and contemporary, with only a few tropical ingredients or loosely Hawaiian-inspired dishes. Beyond ahi poke and touches of pineapple or guava, the menu is dominated by items like flatbreads, fried ravioli, calamari, burgers, steaks, and crab cakes. The restaurant also felt unfinished and somewhat disorganized. The beautiful pizza oven featured in promotional photos appeared closed off and was seemingly being used as a storage or service area. Staff were constantly rushing around and at one point the kitchen door flew open behind us and there was some type of collision between staff. Individually these aren't major issues, but together they detracted from what should have been an calm ambiance and relaxed dining experience. Our server was pleasant but largely absent after taking our order. My husband finished his drink without ever being offered another, and our food took an unusually long time to arrive. We watched six tables seated after us receive their meals first. When I asked about the delay, I was initially told our food would be right out, only to wait several more minutes before being told it was still being prepared. I think our food was definitely forgotten about until we asked. The food itself was good, but at $60-$70 for many entrées and well over $100 per person for dinner, I expected a far more polished experience. Those prices are comparable to restaurants at The Breakers Palm Beach, where the service, atmosphere, and overall experience are on an entirely different level. We ordered the crab cake and the bison burger with truffle fries. Both were enjoyable, but our first impressions influenced our choices. We would have ordered more expensive entrées, but after the arrival experience and service, we didn't feel confident they would justify the cost. I was also surprised that the $35 bison burger is actually a blend of bison and other meats. On the menu, "wagyu" is misspelled, so also wasn't going to order that. Just a lot of little things that contributed to an underwhelming experience. The little things matter, especially at that price point. When we expressed our frustration with out experience, we asked for our dessert to be comped. The Key Lime Pie slice was tiny and is listed on the menu for $15. Crazy. At the end of the night, they discounted our check as well which was appreciated. I think if we were seated outside, our experience would have been really different. We would have been much more relaxed and probably wouldn't have noticed a lot of the small things, but sitting inside felt stressful and very drawn out due to the environment and our extended wait for our food. If we were watching the sunset maybe the wait wouldn't have felt so long. Overall, Mahina did not deliver the elevated dining experience we expected. The food was enjoyable and our server was kind, but the disorganized atmosphere, inconsistent service, long wait times, and premium pricing left us disappointed.
