3.5, but I'll give it a 4. Takara -- ThaiSushi with personality (and a few rules you need to learn fast). First, this place is busy. If my dining room shot looks oddly empty, that's because I was explicitly told not to photograph people. Apparently someone recently went full creep mode taking pictures of diners and had to be removed by police. So yes--AI cleanup it is. I'm here for dinner, not a misdemeanor. Now, the food. The chef-owners are from Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand, and that absolutely comes through. This isn't your standard Americanized Thai-Sushi mashup. They claim to make many of their curry pastes in-house, and based on what we tasted, I believe it. But before you order, you need to understand how this place works: *Vegetables are cooked softer than most Asian kitchens *Spice is opt-in only -- if you don't ask, you're getting no chile *Levels are blunt: nothing / medium / hot / Thai hot *Even at "nothing," you're still getting fish sauce--so there's baseline funk *The crowd leans older, local, and very much the boating set--which explains some of these defaults We started with soups: The tom kha gai is excellent, but not the creamy coconut-heavy version most people expect. This leans closer to a tom yum with a touch of coconut milk--lighter, sharper, hot/sour/sweet, and very drinkable. The wonton soup--house-made chicken wontons in a clean vegetable broth--was simple and very well executed. Then things got uneven. The spicy herb noodle (tofu, medium) is listed as egg noodle with egg, chili paste, vegetables, and curry powder--but what actually shows up is closer to a yellow curry noodle stir-fry hybrid. The flavor is excellent. The chili paste + curry powder combination gives it real depth--warm, slightly sweet, properly spiced. But the default egg noodle is a problem. It comes out completely overcooked--soft to the point of collapse. When I asked, I was told that's just how it is. They also ignored the "no bell pepper" request. Which is frustrating, because the base is strong enough that this could be one of the best dishes on the menu. The obvious fix: order it with flat rice noodles instead So we pivoted. The drunken noodle (Pad Kee Mao) with flat rice noodles (tofu, no bell pepper--this time honored) was much better structurally and just as flavorful. But it's worth noting: this isn't a textbook pad kee mao. It eats closer to a pad see ew with heat--slightly sweeter, less aggressive on basil and aromatics--but with a noticeable chile kick. At medium, it was actually spicier than the spicy herb noodle. Still, this was the better noodle dish overall. The massaman curry was the service hiccup. It first arrived as chicken instead of beef. They insisted I ordered it that way--which, no--but they did remake it. And it delivered. The curry is clearly not from a paste jar--layered, slightly sweet, and consistent with everything else we had. There's a mild sweetness across the menu, but it's controlled. Next time I'd go hotter than medium. Final take: Takara isn't sloppy--it's idiosyncratic. This reads like Thai food filtered through a Burmese lens--softer, slightly sweeter, less aggressive on herbs, with chile doing more of the work than aromatics. There's a real kitchen here doing legit work, but the execution depends heavily on how you order. Defaults are tuned for a conservative crowd, not for precision or intensity. If you order casually, you may leave frustrated. If you direct the experience--protein, noodle type, spice level, exclusions--you'll eat very well. Would I go back? Yes. Would I be more explicit next time? Absolutely. read more

One thing I look for in ethnic restaurants is authenticity. Please don't water it down! I want the real deal. First of all the curries give that fresh vibrant We Make This Here vibe. Not a generic powder or pre made paste. Choose your spice level. I'm not scared. I want all the smoke! Bring the heat! The service was a little slow but not bad. Maybe helping us pace. I love the noodles. Hot, aromatic and flavorful. I also heard the chef/owner makes the sushi rolls at the local Publix!! So I feel I can trust it. Takara's rolls are nothing short of amazing. This is the worst's restaurant I ever have eaten in my life. We ordered some for carry out and it was not busy at the time( only 3 parties were eating). We ordered stir fry vegetables, pad see you and fried rice. The waitress told us they will be ready in 30 minutes which is kind of usual for Asian food. We went pick up some carry outs at another restaurant nearby and then came back to pick up our order. However, we had to wait for more than a hour for our order(1 hour and 15 minutes). When we complained about it, the waitress told us that she had already mentioned it when we placed our order. If I knew that in advance, I certainly wouldn't order it there. Also, after we opened up the stir fry vegetables at the hotel, it looks like some left overs from the other customers. This is just the worst restaurant that I have never experienced it. I thought the food here was decent and was decently authentic to my surprise. There isn't that much Asian food in Marathon so this place has great potential. We were aware of the service needing to take a bit longer, but it took way too longer to our surprise. There's a sign out on the front which says that you should be expected to wait at least 45 minutes. We came around 4:40 right when they opened and we waited almost 2 hours for our food which probably the longest I've had to wait before at a restaurant. I think some of the operations and logistics could be worked a little bit better with coordination between the front/back/maybe hire 1-2 more people since I thought the food was decent especially in an area with limited Asian food and they were turning people away after us since they couldn't keep up. With some restructuring, I would say they would have a lot of potential. I tried the spring rolls, Red curry w/ Chicken, and the Pad See Ew and I thought the dishes were all great. She also mentioned that there are two people in the kitchen that are cooking and they are very particular about how they prepare their meals. They want the best experience for the guests. We moved to Marathon 2yrs ago and started ordering from this restaurant on a weekly basis. The food is tasty and decent but nothing extraordinary. The wait times that everyone left a review about are true. Dining in or takeout times are often over 1.5hrs and food portions are extremely small. You will be lucky to find more than 10 small pieces of chicken shreds in your "anything chicken" dish !!! I have written a few reviews (positive/negative) on many local restaurants around here. But I never wrote one for this restaurant since there was nothing majorly negative or positive for me to contribute. However we had a very bad experience last week that has forced me to write this review now: 2 times in the past 3 months our take out order of $80-90 was charged to our bank account as $110-120. Luckily we had our original receipt and contacted Takara. They confirmed on their end that our take-out order was $80-90 and insisted that the amount they charged us was correct and therefore they can not refund us any money. We had to contact our bank and email them the receipt to get our $20-30 refund. However we always assumed this was just a honest mistake on their part. (see pictures of 1 of these UNAUTHORIZED extra tips that they added by themselves. There was 1 more time) Last week we ordered our weekly dishes and went there after 2hrs to pickup. Surprisingly we noticed that our order of $101 had a tip of $21 added to it for a total of $122. We brought this up with the cashier who apologized and said "the system didn't recognize the take out and therefore charged you a tip automatically". Then he went ahead and corrected the bill and we paid $101 plus a tip of $5 for a total of $106. When we got home our phone rang and it was the owner from Takara. We thought that he is calling to apologize for the mistake. Instead he very rudely started to address us as if we had shorted him on his bill. He was demanding that we pay the $21 tip which he insisted should be included even for take out orders. We told him about the past issues with the overcharge before as well and he confirmed that it was them deliberately charging the extra $20-30 as a tip previous times. We politely explained to him that this policy does not make any sense and paying that much tip for a take out order will discourage us from ordering from them weekly. His reply was "nobody needs you business" All I can say is be careful how you treat your customers. You are the only Oriental/Chinese/Thai food in town now and can maybe get away with being so arrogant and rude. But once a competition comes to town, no one will tolerate this. We will never order from this place ever again!! The Owner responded to my review on other websites and accused us of yelling and using inappropriate language inside the restaurant. Just so sad that they have now resorted to lies. We would never do such a thing as our parents raised us to be polite and we are teaching the same to our 3 young boys!!! read more

Very cozy spot! I Loved the purple booths! Servers were super friendly and up front, everything is made fresh(you can taste this!) so food takes a bit longer. Let me say, it was worth it!!! This is a great choice for vegetarians who may have a harder time finding a restaurant in the Keys. My Drunken Noodle with tofu was a very large portion chock full of veggies and tofu. It was salty but good when eaten with some rice to cut the salt. My husband enjoyed his green curry. The eggplant on it was delectable. Pad Thai was also delish. read more

4.8 stars for the Pad Thai alone. With my wife being from Thailand, Pad See EwPad Thaihaving lived in a few different states in my life, and having visited Thailand, we have not found Pad Thai even remotely close to what we have tasted in Thailand itself. But this restaurant is so close to the original that we really had to let them know. If any Thai restaurant in the US can make the claim to have the best pad thai noodles, like they actually eat in Thailand, it very well could be this one. I'd recommend branding their menu with the slogan, if not their building, with "Best Pad Thai in the USA" And they have a great location without major Thai or SE Asian cuisine competition within almost 40 miles or so. So please let them know how good they have it, the waiters need to hear this too because they should be able to take greater pride in their work and workplace. The food doesn't come out fast but it's almost like home cooked on every plate. Normally I have a good dining experience here, but tonight I wasn't given the chance. I walked in at 7:00PM and was told it would be an hour and 45 Minutes to two hours before I would get food. The reason - the kitchen is too busy. There was group of 12-14 people in addition to two other patrons. There were a number of open tables so it didn't seem like they were at capacity. Besides, we're long past the "season" here, so it's not overrun with tourists. I usually eat here 2-3 times when I make it to Marathon for a few weeks stay and never have been turned away. This is very disappointing and upsetting and only points to an established restaurant that has personnel and staffing problems. The place closes at 9:00PM and just after 7:00 PM I was quoted 2 hours. My wife and I were very happy we found the ONLY Thai restaurant in Marathon. Given the prior reviews, we were prepared to wait to be served dinner the day after Thanksgiving, but we lucked out, got seated right away, and our food came quickly. The mom and pop team that owns Takara offers a home-cooked meal, not typical, deep-fried fast food which is so prevalent in the Keys. We had spring rolls, seaweed salad, California rolls, and steamed, lime snapper. Our preferences and modifications of some dishes were done correctly and accommodated with a smile. You could easily drive by this modest little restaurant, but you be missing a somewhat rare find -- traditional Thai food prepared with fresh ingredients and care. Very little cozy place, only a few tables there, literally empty inside at dinner time 7 pm. Mind you I only ordered cucumber hand rolls and California roll, gyoza and kids fried rice. Apparently they don't have hand roll in the menu and I order 3 of cucumber hand rolls. On the phone no one informed me about the price or how many comes with an order. I specified 3 hand rolls, not 3 orders. When I came to pick up my 3 cucumber hand roll was priced total of $39 !!! I immediately asked why. The waitress said "oh it comes with 2 per order" and I said " so 6 hand rolls that only have cucumbers in it costs $39 I never heard of such an expensive cucumber hand roll. So I had to pay anyway to leave so my kids won't starve. The taste was ok nothing special of course it's only cucumber, the worst part was cucumber was cut in blocked shape, not a string shape. So all the cucumber fell out of handroll . My kids ate rice and seaweed and cucumber separate because it won't hold together. This is obviously unskilled chef. Other items we ordered was okay too. Went back to hotel and set the kids to sleep and just wanted to check again in their menu. I could not find handroll prices but I did find vegetable roll and California roll cost about $5.50. Ok that's typical but handroll?? Did I miss something ? Each other they charged me $12.95 for 2 freaking cucumber handroll. $12.95 was a red Dragon roll they had which has tempura shrimp and all sort of good stuff but cucumber handrolls? ???If there was no set price why didn't they tell me anything? I would have never ordered them. I called the restaurant about the price gouged handroll and only response I got was "My boss said to charge that so I can't do anything". I asked for the owner and was told that she is busy. I left my phone number but they wouldn't call. This is Marathon, FL not in freaking NY or LA. I used to work at restaurants in South beach, Aventura FL and they charge maybe $5 for handroll for vegetable. But in the high end restaurant. Not in a restaurant looks like about to close down. Terric, reasonably priced thai and sushi food! Be forewarned. You will wait. Small staff and they really take time to prepare your food proper. Did not have sushi this time, but next time for sure. Other tables that had it were overheard saying how delicious it was. From what i saw the presentation was beautiful. We got hot seafood soup and ginger soup. Both were savory and very much comforting...what you would get while feeling under the weather (or cold). Bowl size was perfect size for an appetizer. I could've drank a gallon of it. Looking forward to trying some of the other soups offered. The naked shrimp salad was filling, the ginger dressing was like candy to me. I would buy a bottle of it if they sold it. Shrimp cooked perfectly, and meal was a steal at $9, unheard of for seafood salad in the keys. Mixed seafood with broccoli oyster sauce was just as amazing. Again, seafood perfectly cooked and did not have an overwhelming fish taste. Rice was an accompaniment. Portion size was good for 2. Really looking forward to trying more dishes on the extensive menu! Curries, rice dishes, noodle dishes and of course, the sushi. Highly recommend a stop here for ethnic food. Blegh! Immediately upon entering I saw live ants, flies, gnats, thousands of wings from apparent termites, and rodent droppings on the windowsill and on the floor next to where we sat. Despite that we stayed to eat, the food tasted like it was a day away from getting tossed in the garbage, it certainly was not fresh. The access area to the bathrooms was cluttered with old paint cans, debris, old food containers, etc. And the bathroom was foul, I will spare you any gory details. The only saving grace was the server, she hustled and was very friendly, despite being the hostess, server, food runner, busser, etc. she managed to do all well. This is a difficult review to give as I know it will hurt someone, but I feel it needs to be said. First of all the food is very good, I have eaten here two times and my family and I thought the food was really good. The issue is service. This will be an investment of time if you decide to eat here. Each time I have eaten it was a 1 1/2 hour or longer event. The waitress, god bless her, need to find a different carrier. She is all over the place and very LOUD. She will call across the restaurant, "Does anyone need a drink? Did I get every one" She is unknowing rude, so i'm not sure it's rude.. I would say she will eventually get it, but I think there area some other issues that might affect her getting it.
