We went here after hearing about it from a few locals while in Islamorada for about a week. The tuna nachos were fantastic, the wonton was the perfect level of crunch and flavor with awesome sauces and fresh tuna on top. The crispy rice and sushi rolls were fresh and flavorful. The service was great, attentive with the perfect balance of conversation. We sat outside, ambiance was great, nice and quiet for being right off of route 1. Next up our steamed lobster gyoyza with lobster bisque was good, but not that exciting. My Hot Girl Roll, with Spicy Tuna, cucumber, crab & crunchy bits on top, was delicious. An absolute must visit for a classier date night on the island. After lots of fresh seafood and quick easy bites elsewhere, this establishment is a great change of pace for a sit down meal with to die for fresh and creative sushi rolls, excellent steak and seafood entrees, and an extensive wine selection. We have dined three times and each experience better than the last. This time around we had a great wedge salad, handful of sushi rolls including a flavorful tuna avocado mango roll, and seared scallops with a creamy poblano rice topped with chimichurri. The sushi here was easily top two best sushi we've ever had, in the top two with a place on the California coast ( we eat a lot of sushi everywhere we go). Our server at the bar was Bob and he was awesome helping us choose the rolls we wanted! It's hard to imagine anything better than then therefore 4 rolls we chose - they were absolutely incredible. I recently complained about Kaiyo losing its way, after we have been going there since they opened. It was sad to have to not include them in our goto restaurants list. I received a response that they are changing things up and to give them another shot. So, we did that last night. I am happy and excited to report it was awesome! We returned to check out some of the changes to the menu and the sunset locals' happy hour. FYI, the happy hour is for everyone, not locals only, and it's for the entire restaurant, not just the bar. The only thing that stopped me from coming here regularly has been the price of the food based on portions. The quality has never been an issue, and the food has always been excellent. So I'm happy they brought back a happy hour and adjusted the menu, so there's something for everyone's budget now. Everything we had was outstanding. We had almost everything on the HH menu and brought friends. We also ordered the mermaid roll off the main menu and bread pudding for dessert. Been here several times and ordered sushi rolls very good. Service is also very friendly and attentive including tonight. Atmosphere very good. Tonight we decided to order different items as we were celebrating birthdays. The miso soup bland all 4 of us ordered the soup. Scallops were thumps down, octopus nothing to write home about. The plate my daughter ordered she did not eat (left over half. ) The Key Lime pie ( thank goodness we only ordered one) was barely eaten by a family of 4. this is one of the best restaurants in the keys that I have been to. I didn't expect much based on the reviews, but the menu looked interesting so I showed up. And we were a party of four and was amazed at how good the food was. It's Japanese fusion, but with amazing flavor profile. I later told the chef that if a Cajun and a Japanese chef made friends this would be it because everything was high flavor. Even something as simple and as boring as you yuzu salad was bursting with flavor. I looked at some of the reviews that said the prices are high. But coming from Delray Beach Florida I feel like for what I got. The prices are actually inexpensive. A party of four with appetizers and not including alcohol drinks was 200 which seems great for amazing food. I definitely wouldn't consider it an expensive restaurant by any means. now I am a big foodie and I'm very particular about things. The MF atmosphere was great, the service was great and the food was amazing. They said the chef had only been there for about four months but what a treasure he is. Misleading Service**: When I ordered a glass of Cloudy Bay, I wasn't informed it was unavailable--instead, I was served a substitute that tasted cheap and with no apology. . Runners repeatedly disrupted our meal (3 times) with incorrect orders. Later guests who ordered the same steak received theirs before we did, despite our earlier arrival. We used to come here all the time and it was excellent. We spend a lot of time in Islamorada (months of every year) and a lot of that time is spent at happy hours and dining out. We hadn't been to Kaiyo in a while because there are so many great happy hours around to tempt us, but we finally made it back here for their (very short) happy hour of 5-6 PM. We walked through the door exactly at 5 PM. Out of respect for the posted hours and the servers, we had waited in the heat on the porch until the correct time showed on our phones. We were greeted, not with a "hi" or "welcome," or even "how many in your party?", but by a young man, maybe a server, with a hand on one hip, looking from his watch to us as if to imply we had come in too early. I said "Oh, is it not 5 by your watch? It's exactly 5:00 pm according to our phones." He had what looked to be an analog, or possibly digital, but definitely old-style watch. He looked midly disgusted and said it wasn't quite 5:00 (despite it being 5:00) but we could come in anyway - not a great way to greet a customer or make them feel welcome. As for the food: it used to be that their HH specials were outstanding, with a variety of sushi rolls and some really great beers (La Fin du Monde, a favorite!), but now the HH has been reduced to a few selections, most of which aren't sushi, and limited drink specials that don't include any of the good stuff. Still, we were hungry and ordered plenty and drank a couple of drinks each to make the most of it. The food was just okay (dumplings, brussels sprouts, pork belly buns, and a pretty bland sushi roll). Our bartender was efficient if not overly friendly, but the overall vibe was just way off what we are used to for Kaiyo. I don't really understand it - they also own the Green Turtle, which is one of our favorite places - the food and HH there is always great and the staff always friendly and welcoming. Not sure why it doesn't translate to Kaiyo, but maybe that's a place to start if improvement is on the menu. I wish I could say we would be back to give it another shot, but I don't know that we will. read more

We had an enjoyable meal at the Sushi bar at Kaiyo in early December 2020. Angela, one of the managers working that evening, referred us to a great value wine to accompany our meal. We had sushi, including the hog fish "spoons" in the photo and several rolls. All were delicious. We were able to walk here from the Islander resort. Extremely timely service. Everything was spaced out properly, great waitress and bus staff. We were taken care of promptly and the server made accommodations that I didn't quite see on the menu (soft shell crab hand roll). Ordered several rolls all excellent, and the more pricey roll we ordered (B52) was HUGE. Like 3-4 times the size of an average roll. A friend and I visited Kaiyo last night. **Don't let construction on the main road be a deterrent. We turned onto the side road and found plenty of parking at and in front of Kaiyo. We were immediately greeted by a smiling, polite and pleasant hostess, Ashley. After deciding on two seats at the bar, our server, Karie came over with water and made excellent drink recommendations when she realized we were feeling a little indecisive. Upon placing our appetizer order of brussel sprouts and the yellowtail tiradito, Karie suggested we order an extra portion of the tiradito so that we could each have two spoons. The order normally comes with three total. I'm glad she made that suggestion; it was so delicious that we would have been fighting over the third spoon. Instead, we each got two! Afterwards, we ordered two rolls. The sunrise/sunset roll was amazing!!!!!! Kudos to the sushi chefs. Had high hopes, knowing Kaiyo is owned by Green Turtle Inn folks. Sadly, we were underwhelmed. I ordered sushi, my son ordered the duck and hubs ordered Delmonico steak. Server made an honest mistake, adding eel instead of ebi that I ordered. Brought out a cucumber roll for my son, and it became clear she didn't enter the duck he asked for. My sushi went back and sat while they made the swap. When it was redelivered, I noticed the tuna sashimi had some dark brown spots. Husband's steak came out not long after the sushi. It was good. But son waited another 10 min for his duck. Overall it was ok, but not worth the price. Green Turtle Inn is much better. read more

We were looking for a nice restaurant to visit at the end of our trip and chose Kaiyo. When we arrived at the door, there was no host. A minute or two later, he appeared and seem annoyed that we had entered the restaurant in search of him. He then explained that they were short-staffed and sushi would take longer than other items as they only had two people making it. We sat down to order. Our server was nice and consistently attentive. There were consistently 3-4 people staffing the sushi bar, as well. They didn't have the wine we wanted in stock so we were offered a pricier substitute. But the food is our major issue: Brussels sprouts: doused in brown sugar, not maple syrup. Underroasted and then charred. Served with grocery store chili sauce. Vietnamese meatballs: some meatballs were hot, some were room temp, all had the texture of raw meat. Rice was underdone and sauce was obscenely salty. Pork belly with bok choy and pineapple: "compressed" pineapple is simply canned pineapple in small bites, it seems, and pork belly was under-rendered and tasted like a torch, bok choy was barely par-boiled and only charred on the edges with a torch. Basically tasted like a plate of salty pineapple kerosene. Cashew chicken: a massive plate full of mostly sauce -- which was the saltiest sauce I've ever tasted -- a few chunks of chicken, giant chunks of undercooked red bell pepper and snow peas, underdone rice, and cashews that appeared to have been just shaken out of a can. Sushi rolls -- I've had better rolls at a hole-in-the-wall sushi place in the suburbs. Spicy mayo was not spicy. Rolls were sloppily assembled. Fish was not flavorful Stuffed avocado -- avocado was not ripe, tuna was fine but exceedingly spicy. Served in an manner that made it difficult to eat, though it was tasty. By the end of the meal, our palates were blown out by how salty everything was, which seemed to be the cover the chefs use for boring food. Our water bottle wasn't refilled at any point in the meal, either, so we left without dessert after paying a bill that seemed disproportionately expensive given the ambience, decor, quality of food, and general mood of this subpar restaurant. read more

Have been coming for years. Always great! We went again on Friday and it did not disappoint. We always start with the eggplant chips. So crispy and light. Love the cilantro dipping sauce. We had the blueberry salad next. Fresh spinach blueberries goat cheese with glazed walnuts. Love it! Main course was spectacular - triple tail blackened with blackened shrimp and a lobster cream sauce. We practically licked the plate! This isn't a 1-star. It wouldn't be fair to give 1-star just as it wouldn't be fair to give a waitress less than 18-20% tip last PM (servers have to make livings too). My wife & I never send food back & only bring things to restaurant staff attention when it's really wrong, to make aware so they can prevent future issues. Nonetheless, grab your popcorn bc this was a special experience. Typically I don't rate restaurants unless something is awful...food, service, hygienics. *Spoiler alert: it was a bit of all 3 yesterday Last PM we decide on Kaiyo Grill to celebrate our 3yr anniversary. No we didn't tell the server of the occasion, we don't need a free glass of champagne. Reservation wasn't required which was nice. Wife also commented on the restaurant temp being better than others, not an icebox. Things could go well. We sit down & look at apps/drinks to start. Menu boasts # of Japanese beers (Kirin, Saporro, even an IPA Marihana from Coedo Brewery in Japan which was cool). Since menus often don't fully reflect what all is actually on tap/available, I decide to go to the restroom & peek over to the adjacent bar. On my way back, I inquire w/the bartender what 1 of the other taps was & heard a name I knew. The server came to the table upon my return & asked if we'd rather sit by the bar (looks like she spotted me asking questions). I told her I needed to use the bathroom, saw some beer taps on the way & was just curious of the other selections. She seemed ok w/that response & asked if we wanted drinks. Wife ordered Sonoma Cutrer & bc there were other non-menu listed taps I didn't ask the bartender to give a rundown on, I inquired w/the server what the other options were. She rattled off the aforementioned Japanese staples & stated they had a craft IPA called Hop Gun, also a hefeweizen. I smiled then ordered the other craft IPA Jai Alai, saying nothing of the fact she didn't know they had that available on tap. Moving to the meal which is where it really gets saucy, I ordered Tuna Squared sushi roll & my wife got Pad Thai (listed only on 1 menu so happy it was available). Sushi was prepared to order & was not the biggest roll but was tasty. Seeing I was still a bit hungry after the steamed dumpling app & sushi roll, I started nibbling on my wife's dish. As a disclaimer: I am an active 6ft 185lb man that doesn't suffer from obesity...or tape worm, I just happened to have a good workout earlier & saw the chicken pad Thai looking pretty delish. As I'm picking bites here & there (mostly chicken), I notice something thin & dark. Maybe a nice piece of steak slipped its way into the wok! Nope not steak, not steak at all. I had a piece of cardboard on my fork...Did it taste like cardboard? Yes, bc it was an actual piece of cardboard that made it into my wife's meal. Ok well what to do now? I put the cardboard on my plate & flipped it over. One side was traditional cardboard brown but the other side was white. It had to be part of the food packaging that just accidentally got put in the ingredients during meal prep. I kept nibbling chicken thinking mistakes happen. Part of me didn't want to tell my wife bc I could taste the cardboard was seasoned, meaning it was fully cooked into the dish. Could the white-bleached paper side leech chemicals into the food we're eating? Alright I told her & thought we could be ok healthwise just shrugging it off...hopefully. She didn't want any more pad Thai after this. The server stopped by & my wife pointed out the cardboard piece. Quick on her feet, the server rebounded & said "Yea, sometimes chef likes to put a piece of tamarind into a dish every now & then. Let me double check for you." She took the cardboard piece & returned without it proclaiming that it was just as she suspected, a tamarind piece. My wife not biting her tongue says "My husband's pretty sure that is cardboard packaging." "Nope, tamarind" the server reassures w/a half-toothed smile. "Can I interest you 2 in dessert?" Wow ok then. Mind you, we didn't ask for a new meal or anything to be comped but here we are...at a restaurant celebrating a beautiful occasion. Hoping to have a good meal & make a nice memory, not today. Not only did I shake off rudeness in offering to sit somewhere else off-the-bat & discounted lack of knowledge on the restaurant's beverage selections, I'm now being told I'm mistaken in my ability to distinguish between food-packaging cardboard & a flavor-enhancing ingredient added to random dishes by the Kaiyo Grill chef. Food=Ok, Service=Borderline Insulting, Hygiene=Questionable (hopefully ingested chemicals don't have future ill effects). But Hey the bar is open for seating if you want to know what they actually have to serve, 1 of the menus will probably have a hidden dish here & there and chef might just pop a nice tamarind piece into the wok for something savory to chew on...not bad for a $200 check on our anniversary night.
