Ah, Nine-Ten, a name I can say with a smile. I'd been here a few times before this dinner, for happy hour and breakfast/brunch, always fairly pleased with what I was being given, enough to interest me in coming back for dinner. It is interesting that a small hotel can hold such a culinary treasure, though perhaps quite fitting. Before we get too wordy though, would you care to chance into the meal Complementary bread, of course, how was it? Well my notes say "really good bread", if that suffice. I also want to note that at about this time when I was getting seated, I bumped into our very small table and knocked a glass over on the table and onto the ground, accompanying predictable shatter. The staff made no fuss about this, cleaning it up immediately and efficiently, with only the comment to not worry - this happened frequently (it didn't to anyone else that night). Watermelon Water Fresca - Cool and refreshing, interesting flavor. If its purpose is to simply get my appetite going for the real meal, it did its purpose exceedingly well; not that I have much to complain about, but I do usually wish for a little more substance in an amuse bouche. Braised lamb (neck) served with roasted carrots, sun chokes, kaleidoscope (brussel sprout family), garnished with a pickled lambs tongue I've been to a few restaurants serving lamb before, none of which I particularly enjoyed; the difference here is that it's actually damn good, nearly a gateway dish into alternative meats depending on your ethnicity. Delicious all around, great carrots, and clear balanced flavors (including that pickled tongue). Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly - baby carrots, swiss chard, plantains, black-eyed peas, spicy jellies & sweet potato purée - A classic dish at this restaurant, and the biggest show of molecular gastronomy I've probably seen in San Diego in some while. Solid appetizer if a tad heavy, but everything was flavored and cooked perfectly, displaying an excellent use of ingredients not quite local yet fresh. Grilled Swordfish - confit tomato, black olive, preserve lemon, peewee potatoes, fried white anchovies, romesco sauce - This one was interesting - I'm not particularly fond of swordfish, and probably wouldn't have ordered this dish at any other restaurant, perhaps showing my trust for Chef Jason Knibb. Though I wouldn't say this was the best dish I could have ordered at Nine-Ten, I am quite willing to concede that it may be my best swordfish yet. Excellent potatoes. LaBelle Farms Duck Breast - grilled figs, sautéed kale, green farro, orange & ginger puree, juniper duck emulsion - Have you ever had rare duck breast? Medium-rare duck breast? Because I sure haven't before, meaning that this must be only ridiculously fresh. That yellow-orange circle isn't egg, but rather the orange and ginger puree, the figs as you would expect and of high quality, and the kale was delicious, the trendy food that it is now. Now how do they do that last one? Half Baked Chocolate Cake - caramel sauce, whipped cream or vanilla ice cream - A long time ago on the very start of my culinary journey, I experienced a birthday cake slice that changed my conception of dessert overall - it was at a restaurant, and free, just so well made and ridiculously rich that my table walked out utterly wowed with the dish (and restaurant). Since then, I've not had the same reaction to a dessert until this - this being perhaps even better. Rich, delicious, difficult to finish on your own, but that's all the better - it's delightful to share. Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta - bittersweet chocolate sorbet, blackberries, mixed butter-chocolate crumb As pretty as almost everything here is, I really should be posting another picture of this course. The purple lattice is sugar, the branches chocolate, the crumbs forming an almost dirt look, the dessert become almost like an edible and delicious picture of nature. As famous as the Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly might be, this is the one that easily stands out in my mind, me hoping to experience it again and again. Greatness. So there it is, amazing, isn't it? Each course was different, well made, and amazing in its own right, each course performed perfectly. Each plate was a balanced of color, food types, flavors, temperatures, and spacing, with the bonus that they were quite the delight to look at, too. As much as I loved this experience, this is the first restaurant that made me feel I needed to post these reviews more punctually - the flavors, though wonderful, are clearly of fall, an odd clash to the near-summer skies I see just outside my glass-door window. But I can happily confirm that the late Naomi Wise was right: this just may be the most pleasant meal in San Diego, if I could only afford to regularly visit. read more

Made a reservation on Dec 9 with Billy for 6 people for Christmas Day Brunch for 1pm indoor seating. When our group arrived we were asked to wait in the lobby. Then they lied and said we had called and changed it to outdoor seating. Nothing we could do although our disabled family member was uncomfortable and the service was poor. I believe they do valet, but I didn't see anyone outside with a podium of any sort. We came here for a friend's birthday dinner with a party of five. The restaurant was surprisingly small, pictures were quite deceiving in size, but I supposed they have different rooms and levels throughout the building for different types of reservations. From casual dining, to reserved reception areas, and private dining options. It's definitely a great place for small parties, no more than five comfortably. It's a bit on the quiet side too. But our server was efficient for the most part, and explained the menus well. Their specialty cocktail menu was lacking, it wasn't so special at all, quite basic I would say. The food on the other hand, was very beautifully presented. Roasted Colorado Lamb Loin $37 (roasted romanesco, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, chanterelle mushrooms, pistachio relish, lemon date puree, turmeric lamb jus) I requested my lamb to be medium rare, and it was perfectly cooked. Pink on the inside and brown on the outside, and the meat was still tender. All the veggies and sauces paired well. Prime Beef Short Rib $38 (roasted turnips, chanterelle mushrooms, marinated napa cabbage, kale chips, red cabbage agrodolce puree) The short rib was also tender and easy to pull apart. All the flavors went well together, and I absolutely loved the kale chips which were nicely salted and extra crispy. 910 MANHATTAN $12 (Orange Coriander Infused Whiskey, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, Bitters) The manhattan tasted as it should be. Decorum, elegance, and tantalization. These are the words I would use to describe the atmosphere and essence of Nine-Ten. The dining room embodied a certain, je ne sais quoi, and my time here was an event I shan't forget. My family and I attended their brunch on the eve of my mother's birth, and I can say with total certainty that my tastebuds were truly reborn. The salmon avocado toast was the perfect tease for magnificence that laid before me. The chocolate croissant was delivered to me with care by the staff, and the chocolate filling engulfed my mouth pleasantly. For my main dish, the Short Rib Toast absolutely burst through my expectations like the Kool-Aid man through drywall. The egg seductively oozed over my shredded meat and cast my toast in a yellowy veil. The final pièce de ré·sis·tance was the bottle of classic Cholula handed to me by the establishment's manager. We stopped here and had a very enjoyable lunch with very attentive service lovely atmosphere. I tried the house smoked cured salmon. I liked how it was sliced very thin and the salad on top of it was nicely detailed. My husband really enjoyed the shrimp and grits special. He said the shrimp were prepared perfect and this dish was excellent but he would have liked a slightly larger portion of the delicious grits. Food wise, I wasn't a huge fan of my set wine pairing - it didn't seem to go well with the dishes I ordered. While I'm not sure if the dishes are similar during non-restaurant week times, I would recommend this place for a nice date! I felt like the service was only okay which is why I'm giving this place a 4/5 stars. While the food was very good, the service was very below average to say the least. -waited 15 mins before server came back to take our order -ordered a bottle of champagne and server poured the first pour but we had to refill ourselves the whole night. My friend and I came during restaurant week to try their $50 pre-fix menu. I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, so I jumped on the chance to go during restaurant week, which I found to be a great deal for a three course meal. Parking can be somewhat difficult, even on a random weekday, but we managed to find parking close by. They also offer valet parking for $10 for those who are struggling to find a spot. The restaurant is located inside of a hotel, which at first threw me off a bit. The interior is very nice and classy, but quite small, with a bar at the front. Once we were seated, the waiter brought us fresh bread and whipped butter topped with sea salt. The bread was really good, but what made it amazing was the sea salt whipped butter. For our three course meals: APPETIZERS **The Hamachi sashimi--I went for this, since I wanted something light. I was pretty disappointed by my appetizer, since it tasted like sashimi soaked in vinegar. The fish didn't have any flavor either, and the whole dish was too sour for my liking. **The lamb tartar--my friend ordered this for her appetizer and it was much better. The tartar was super moist and coated well in sauce, and the crackers and pumpkin seeds added crunch. ENTREES **NY strip steak --I went for the regular steak, and though it was good, the steak quality was definitely not the best that I have had. At first bite, I wasn't too impressed, since most of the flavor came from a gravy-like sauce. The toppings, however, were beautiful and it was one of the prettiest steaks I have yet to have. I also ordered my steak medium rare, but it came out looking more on the medium side. **Dry aged steak-- my friend chose this steak, and it was well marbled. She ordered it rare, which came out looking medium rare. DESSERTS **Almond and coconut -- From first appearance, I was really disappointed, since this dessert came in a bowl. It didn't look very appetizing and it looked like pudding in a huge bowl. However, it tasted really good! The flan was light and had a caramel flavor, while the coconut ice cream was super flavorful. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to people if they're looking for a nice dinner in La Jolla. This restaurant can be pretty pricey if dined at without the restaurant week special, but it makes a great meal for a special occasion. read more

A quick update on the ingredients. They only offer farmed salmon, which, of course, is not good. Here we are on the Pacific coast of North America and instead of wild caught Alaska salmon, they ship in farmed salmon from thousands of miles away. Just can't understand that. Amazing spot for fancy dinner. Husband and I visited on our honey/baby moon. Our server was quite friendly and knowledgeable about the wine pairing my husband had with our chefs menu, 8 course meal. We did specify that I could not have raw/undercooked seafood or unpasteurized cheese - which our server was aware of and confirmed. I came here for another birthday celebration and got the Hamachi Sashimi and Hudson Valley Foie Gras for appetizers, Smoked Maple Leaf Duck Breast for my main entree, and Japanese cheesecake for dessert. The Hudson Valley Foie Gras was really good, but I did not like the Hamachi Sashimi - it did not taste fresh but maybe I came on the wrong day. The Smoked Maple Leaf Duck Breast was delicious and the Japanese Cheesecake was amazing. The two that stood out to me the most were probably the Foie Gras and Japanese Cheesecake. We came here for restaurant week and this restaurant was amazing in every way. All 11 of us walked out feeling full, satisfied, and happy! Service was top notch and they even offered to split the check 11 ways! Holy cow. I don't know any restaurant that has done that willingly for a large party. Also, I NEVER had to ask for a water refill and that was SO awesome because I hate flagging servers down for water. The meal flowed nicely, they always made sure we had water or a drink on hand, and are prompt in taking our plates away. So off the Restaurant Week Menu: Appetizer: Jamaican pork belly, 5/5 super tender, fatty (I lurvz fat), flavorful, and filling! This item has been on the menu for 10 years (plus or minus) and I can see why. This dish is here to stay. Entree: Oxtail, 5/5, it came with a nice batch of cooked vegetables that was seasoned really well. The oxtail was fall off the bone tender, flavorful, and there was plenty of it! It's not gamey at all. One of our friends is a very picky eater and she thoroughly enjoyed this dish too. Dessert: Half baked chocolate cake, 3.5/5, it was good but it didn't knock my socks off. I think it's because I tried the Mille-feuille dessert 5/5 and was more impressed with that one. It tasted like a deconstructed apple pie. I also tried the pear tarte Tatin 4/5 and that was good too but I think the Mille-feuille was the best one for me. I def recommend this place! Parking sucks in this area. Valet is $10. read more

I didn't quite understand this place. The service was overly attentive, to the point that made me and my wife uncomfortable. Refilling the glass of water every minute, asking 3 times if a dish was ok, offering to go through the menu multiple times during the meal... We couldn't have a conversation without being interrupted. As for the food, everything was good/ok. Nothing great, nothing bad either, but lacking the fine dining experience. At end of the dinner, the valet parking guy self-tipped himself without returning the change to me first. I still wonder if we were on one of those TV shows with hidden cameras. We've been meaning to try this place for a while and finally when we found it listed for restaurant week, decided this was a good opportunity to finally make it happen. We started our meal with the jamaican jerk pork belly and the thai lobster salad. Both were delicious although alas, a bit toned down from the spicy, acidic ethnic food we were expecting based on the names. Nonetheless, they were both delicate and flavorful in their own right. For entrees, we ordered the braised short rib with cabbage and mushrooms and the roasted lamb loin with pistachios and lemon date puree. The short rib was truly melt in your mouth tender and flavorful and perfectly (and suprisingly) paired with the pickled cabbage. We really appreciated the ability to choose a cheese plate instead of a usual dessert. The yuzu and carrot cake was slightly dry but overall we have to admit, we're not huge dessert people. Of all the places we've been recently (and for restaurant week), Nine-Ten had the best food. Hamachi Sashimi is a must try!!! I came here for happy hour, all food is half off which makes it a great deal! The happy hour is Mon-Fri 3:30-6:30. We have 2 people and have got 4 appetizers. The Hamachi Sashimi is amazingly high quality and paired with shiitake mushrooms. We also got burrata and the hazelnut flavor is coming through. Lamb meatballs are garnished with pine nuts and the bread is grilled to perfection. Drinks are refreshing and came up very quickly. I ordered the cocktail on the happy hour menu, it's made with cucumber lemon and soda water. The interior is very pleasing and I love the vivid color of the artwork on the wall. DISCLAIMER: did not end up eating here for reasons you will soon read, so don't take this into consideration when it comes to the food! DO NOT COME HERE WITH YOU'RE DOG. Arrive early to our reservation with my service dog and automatically get uncomfortable stares from the hostess and a guy who looked to be the manager. They said I could not bring a dog inside even though I explained he was a service dog. They said the dog has to be more than the service I provided. They ONLY accept dogs with a specific function (who even knows which one). I then agreed to a table outside and they said the only outside table was in the front which is all shade --and very dark and cold (at 5:30 pm in La Jolla). Moral of the story: super rude when it comes to accommodating you're dog. The other guests in my party arrived and we decided to leave because of the horrible way we were treated! Overall, the quality of food was a 4, but I'd say the service was an average 3. The experience as a whole was great but that was probably largely due to the fact that I was there with my boyfriend. The customer service was lackluster but not particularly bad either. Was just "eh." A few things we noticed: we weren't offered bread (had to ask), and the butter we received seemed like they had left it out for too long. The next butter plate we received was rock solid, making us think there were inconsistencies in the stuff that leaves their kitchen. Of course butter isn't that big of a deal, but it's the little things we noticed. There just wasn't a whole lot of attention towards us-- maybe because we looked younger and the the average age for this place seemed to be around 50. HOWEVER, Our appetizer, Jamaican Pork Belly, and our entrees, Duck and the Short Rib were lovely! I personally liked the Duck best and it seriously was the best Duck I had ever had. The Short Rib was good, but nothing special. Overall, I'd come back if my man was there and if I were craving Duck. A friend of mine took me here for a nice lunch. The restaurant is located at prospect in La Jolla inside the Grand Colonial hotel. They offered valet parking for $10 ( 4 hours ) which is not bad as parking is very difficult to find in the area. The restaurant is right next to the beach, the famous La Jolla cove. They only open at a certain hours. They also have menus of the day that we're not on the menu lists. We both ordered the salmon and paired it with beers and it's delicious. The salmon was served perfectly cooked, garnished so beautifully and delicious. There are not so much seatings but it's pretty good enough for a hotel. The bathroom is way below.... from the restaurant you need to walk straight, take the stairs make a left and take another stairs. Haha! Yeah, it's kinda tricky but it's not hard to find. (The crème brûlée dessert was one of the best I have ever had. ) The table placement and acoustics are thoughtfully planned, and this is one of the few popular restaurants in San Diego that does not get too noisy when full. Phenomenal service from servers Chris and Oren (who had delightful personalities as well as being top-notch servers). I called ahead to make a lunch reservation. Anthony said he would save me a nice table. After we arrived, it took between 5-10 minutes before an employee showed up at the front desk. She wanted to seat us outside in the front. The humidity was not pleasant outside and I mentioned that I had spoken to Anthony... She acted like she didn't know Anthony. Their coke was watered down, as if had been sitting in ice at the bar for awhile. I asked the waiter if the bread was going to be served hot. He said yes, however, it was served cold. It took a real long time to get our salad as well as the entrees and desserts. I ordered the loch duart salmon and saw that the corn purée had congealed by the time it was being served. The top of the salmon was over sautéed in butter, giving it a tough texture on top. It felt like chewing glass shards. The peanut butter semi-freddo was so hard I could have used a knife to attempt to cut into it, or waited thirty minutes for it to soften up. Maybe they should raise the hamburger price as 80% of the other patrons were ordering burgers. The reason I'm giving it only 3 stars is because when I got home I had diarrhea and gas so bad my stomach was in pain, as well as the slow bad server service and overall dining experience. It was a tough call to decide between the daily special that night, particularly their 40 day dry-aged rib eye which was $70/pop, or go with the Mercy of the Chef 6-course prix-fix menu and paired wines. We ended up going with the latter since I wanted the opportunity to try as much of the menu as possible. Perhaps one of the best parts of this was that we literally had 11 different dishes in all since neither me nor my fiancee ever had the same dish. Ross was a great server and made our night very enjoyable. 1st courses: Hamachi Sashimi Pear and Belgium Endive Salad Both were tasty. We both liked the hamachi the most. I think we're both not too keen on pear salads. 2nd courses: Wild Coho Salmon Baja Striped Bass These were fantastic. Both skins on the fish were super crispy which provided a great contrast to the natural butteriness of the two fish. The salmon was the favorite though with it being cooked a pleasant medium rare. 3rd course: Spicy Dungeoness Crab Spaghetti This dish was super rich, super flavorful, and had a pleasant heat on the tongue. My fiancee couldn't finish hers as she was getting full, but I gladly polished off her bowl. This dish wasn't on the regular menu, so maybe it's reserved for the pri-fix menu. 4th courses: Prime New York Steak (~4oz?) Roasted Colorado Lamb Loin By this point my fiancee was getting full, so I honestly ate about 75% of both of these dishes. I knew I was never a fan of a cut of New York strip, and this dish confirmed it--too chewy, but the other flavors on the plate were great. The lamb loin was very nice--tender, flavors meshed well, and a distinct gaminess characteristic of lamb revealed itself towards the end of the bite. The wine pairing helped with that. 5th courses: Cypress Grove Midnight Moon Smoked Etxegarai Each of us were served a different kind of cheese which various accoutrements. Tasty, but I was not a fan of the paired wine. The wine was more characteristic of a sweet scotch/whiskey port wine which was a bit weird. 6th courses: Caramel Mousse & Spice Cake Half Baked Chocolate Cake I preferred the spice cake, which was more or less a pumpkin pie cream over a carrot cake. My fiancee was more interested in the chocolate one, although it was paired with an "olive oil ice cream" which was...different--I'm still not sure how I feel about that one. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and nicely executed menu which started with light and refreshing dishes which gradually turned into richer and more bold flavors and then tapered off with the cheese courses and desserts. I felt 5/6 of the wines were well paired, but that one with the cheese course--MAN, I couldn't even finish that one. After the bill was paid we asked Ross our server to take our picture in front of the Christmas tree in the hotel lobby and he was surprised that he wasn't informed that this was an engagement dinner! Had high hopes for this place thinking it might be a higher end restaurant or by the description one that parallels my favorites from San Francisco like Gary Danko. Visited this location in downtown La Jolla while traveling for work. It had been recommended from some posts online as well as a friend who grew up in the area. The meal did not disappoint! Both dishes I got were very well executed and the service was great. After ordering my meal, the waiter brought out bread and butter. The bread was hot and fresh with a spongy inside and crunchy outside. I started off with grilled octopus as an app. This was served with dollops of hummus, haricot verts, Spanish chorizo, and crispy zatar chips. While I enjoyed the flavors of this dish very well, the chorizo was a bit oily and I wish the pieces of grilled octopus weren't cut into such small pieces. The amount of octopus was reasonable but keeping it in longer pieces would have been my preference. Next up for the entree was striped bass with trumpet mushrooms, pearl onions, salsify, and bread tuile. The skin on the bass was seared so perfectly that it needed a knife to cut through the crunch. The flaky fish underneath easily broke apart with my fork. Some of the pearl onions were very different sizes so on one bite it was a bit overwhelming with a punch of onion, but other than that really enjoyed this dish. Recommend for dinner if in downtown La Jolla! The brunch is supposed to be great too. read more

Great service, fantastic food. Quality seafood. That's the primary reason for the 5 stars. Ambiance is probably the only detractor from this place as the tables are fairly close to each other and if you are seated at a small table for 2, there's barely any room for anything on the table. In any case, if what you're after is a solid meal, this is a great choice along Prospect St. However, if you are looking for more of a quiet, romantic option, probably not the place to go as this restaurant as a bar in the small space, outdoor seating just outside the main dining area, and lots of foot and car traffic right outside. It's also adjacent to the hotel lobby. If you really want to go, I would recommend getting reservations because of the relatively small dining area. read more
