It's chain dessert shop and a competitor for Maiko Matcha in Chinatown. I was interested in going and came for the soft opening a week before it's grand opening. It took over the Class 502 rolled ice cream/boba shop in the Dun Huang Plaza and I don't know whether that was a good move or not, considering Twisted Love and Aqua S were close by. The decor of the restaurant was very strange, cat and dog themed (super cute but weird for a dessert place...). The people were nice and explained the menu to us: ice cream (had different levels of matcha), soft serve, drinks, and pastries including a matcha toast. I went with vanilla and matcha soft serve and my friend got the 55% matcha ice cream. Mine was super creamy and if I had to compare with Maiko I would say Maiko is slightly better. As for the 55% matcha ice cream I would say it's strong...super strong. If you're a hard core matcha lover you'd be all over it. My friend enjoyed it a lot but it was too bitter for me. A group actually came in thinking this was Maiko (awkward) and the servers convinced them to stay and try it (which they did). Even on a weekend, I found this place to be a good place for studying! There may be a loud crowd from time to time, but it's one of those quiet spots in the plaza, in my opinion. I ordered the shaved ice and the recommended lavender matcha latte. The lavender matcha latte was good. It just reminds me of green cream tea that I get at I Heart Boba. In other words, I don't really taste the lavender, but I can drink it forever. The shaved ice was a bit too sweet for me, and the soft serve on the side wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't finish it. Solid dessert. I wouldn't say that this place is outstanding by any means, but it certainly delivers some decent matcha flavor that pairs well with shaved ice and ice cream. My main complaints would be that the shaved ice was a bit coarse and the mochi, which although had a really nice texture, tasted of pretty much nothing. If you are craving matcha, I'd definitely come here over Cafe Maiko as I think Meccha delivers much better flavor. read more

They used to make it purple at the bottom but last time I cane in there to order it they didn't even make it purple. It didn't even taste like anything but straight up milk. The Yuza is Korean citron jam from a jar, the matcha is supposed to be a soft serve but it was an ice cream scoop and the mochi balls were stiff. Came here for their second day of soft opening when there was still only two people working the counter so it took awhile for everything to be prepared and come out since they were still in the process of training their employees, but I came back yesterday and they had a full staff! The first time I came, I had three different levels of their matcha ice cream and level 3 was obviously my favorite; it has that bitter matcha flavor that tastes so authentic to me. Also tried their lavender matcha latte and it wasn't bad. I feel like it needs a little bit more tweaking for the grand opening, but had there been a little more matcha and a bit sweeter, it would've been really good. Now I don't know if it's because this is their shaved ice standard or if it was because of the training process, but the shaved ice was extremely underwhelming. The toppings were decent, but the lack of it made the whole dessert taste bland and didn't justify the price. The hojicha soft serve on the other hand... was delicious! The roasted flavor was distinctive and the tiny bits of tea in there made it much more interesting to eat than a regular soft serve. read more

I enjoyed the idea that you are able to select different levels of intensity when you order the matcha ice cream/soft-serve. Their ice cream was not too sweet, and did not taste artificial. They have other dessert and drink selections as well incase your sweet tooth desires more than just an ice cream to satisfy your cravings. My boyfriend ordered the shaved ice with red bean and mochi, which seemed to have melted extremely quickly. While I oprted for 2 scoops of matcha ice cream. The name changed, and I'm pretty sure the ownership changed even though the girl at the counter said it didn't when I asked. I use to go weekly and none of the regular staff is there anymore. I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but the black sesame latte recipe has definitely changed. I went twice just to make sure it wasn't just an off day. It use to be good, and now it taste like watered down cardboard. Not sure why they changed from Meccha Matcha, but this place is not the same and I don't appreciate being lied to. Probably one of the best places to get matcha, they really do live up to their name. We got a mixed vanilla and matcha soft serve and it was perfect. The cone was crunchy and crispy with a faint hint of vanilla. The soft serve has a smooth texture, and the matcha was just right, not over powering or bitter. The portion was so worth it for the price that you're paying. In addition, the server, Alex, was really courteous and efficient! He was the only person on shift, taking and making order. I was kindly greeted upon entering by two workers on Suday afternoon. I love the ambiance; plenty of seating, sleek yet comfortable look, and best of all, the music isnt blaring loud like 99% of other drink places. Since it's my first time, I had a questions which were sweetly answered by the very well informed workers. They gave me samples of the flavors which greatly guided me in the process of choosing. I wound up ordering the Hojicha (which is a blend of cacao and matcha) beverage. 10/10 would recommend. Not too bitter like matcha can be, and not pre-diabetes sweet either. Meccha Matcha is amazing. Plain and Simple. Not ONLY do they have great matcha ice cream, but they also serve different matcha strengths! We got the vanilla and matcha swirls and we instantly fell in love. Swirl options depends on timing and season! During the day it was very peaceful and quiet, but when I visited again at night, it was super packed. They have the well-known cute cat and dog wall particularly at this Houston Location. The workers were super kind and patient with me as a first time customer. They will even let you try the flavor options that they carry, so don't be worried about ordering something you might not like! So far, this is my favorite matcha soft serve spot. I would reccomend the "matcha 8 parfait" it was pretty good! and I didn't like the "Matcha summer" (matcha with strawberry sparkling) probably its an acquired taste, wasn't fan of matcha and fruity taste together. It's not bad, but it's not good either. I had the "level 3" matcha ice cream in a cone. It's not overly sweet, slightly bitter, which is perfect and is what matcha should taste like. However, whoever made mine did a terrible job for the presentation with the squashed-in and hollow ice cream scoops. It's better than Matcha Maiko, but still "meh" at best. read more

I thought it was hard to mess up matcha...and I was right, it is hard to mess up, but this place gets some other stuff wrong. First of all, it felt like they were out of everything we wanted to order. All the mille crepe cakes were unavailable, so we decided to go with a shaved ice on the worker's recommendation, but the black sesame soft serve was also unavailable, so we ended up ordering the black sesame as the shaved ice and the matcha as the soft serve since we wanted to incorporate both flavors. The black sesame shaved ice was not good. The ice inside was not well flavored and the outsides were kind of grainy and powdery, not capturing any of the best flavor elements of black sesame. The matcha soft serve was nice; the matcha flavor was mild but the soft serve was creamy. We got to choose two toppings so we picked the matcha jelly and the mochi ball. I was expecting the matcha jelly to be a little bit firm like the jellies that come in boba drinks, but they were soft and squishy like jellos and very mildly flavored. I was expecting the mochi balls to be small and soft like the mochi at froyo bars, but they were larger than expected and the insides were flavorless and starchy. I would prefer corn flakes over the granola they had, because it was hard to chew and didn't go with the overall texture. The creative wall backdrop is very cute and is great for Instagram photos. I also really liked how you can choose the level of match you can get for the ice cream scoops. The soft serve swirls were very creamy and not too sweet. So for those who want a dessert but don't like super sweet desserts or are sensitive to the taste of sugar. This is the place to go. I had the Hojicha and matcha swirl parfait and it was a great combination. The Hojicha is a bit sweeter than matcha. For those who don't know Hojicha is basically roasted matcha so you get a bit of a roasted flavor. To me it brings out the matcha flavor even more. The parfait was very filing so I recommend sharing it. The different layers gave the parfait a great range of textures, however if it's not mixed up properly you end up just eating the last layer.
