On this night we visited Ninja Sushi in Portage Park for a late night dinner. We had talked about this place but I wasn't sure that it was a good choice for me. It seemed gimmicky. I was wrong! The theme ties nicely with a homey Japanese ambiance end decor inside. Feels like a Wicker Park place in Portage Park. But... the real surprise was in the food! Here we go! We ordered Cucumber and Fried Tofu with Peanut sauce, Tamako, Woon Sen Pad Thai, Veggie Monster Maki, and Spider Maki. And since it's a BYOB, I chose to pair that with ROAM Hard Kombucha Hibiscus Berry. The salad was very tasty with the dressing being well balanced but light on the sweetness and tanginess. Now... here is where the story takes a violent turn. I DO NOT LIKE TOFU and used to think that it was a food that should have never been made. UNTIL I tried Ninja's Fried Tofu. It was fried crispy and with a firm yet light and fluffy inside. Totally different than any other tofu I've ever tasted. The peanut sauce was a rich pairing for it and was absolutely delicious. Tamako was Tamako, light and fluffy. Then came the Pad Thai and the rolls. The rolls, made fresh with quality ingredients you could taste. Complex yet subtle and definitely delicious! The Pad Thai was nothing short of fantastic! I asked for medium hot and they nailed it! It was lightly sweet and spicy and very tasty. Well balanced and not oily with good sized and plentiful shrimp. The presentation on every dish was beautiful and colorful and artsy. My mixed veggies with chicken and rice was perfect, and I appreciated that it wasn't overly salty like I'm used to. Sushi? Pass. It smelled so fishy and tasted absolutely horrible. I'm not sure if we got a bad batch or what, but it definitely doesn't make me want to try another roll any time soon. I paid extra for spicey mayo that they neglected to add to our order. My husband and I LOVE spicey mayo, so, it was annoying that we had to walk over there to retrieve it. . To make this situation worse, the cashier argued with my husband that we needed to pay extra for the sauce when we already paid! Outrageous actions of these people, The nerve of them. Meaning, If I didn't pay for the sauce, her conniving idea to manipulate the new receipt by not including the sauce on the new receipt, should've been less than the true total on my email receipt of $170.88 To make the situation even more worse, My husband arrives with the sauce and paid extra for the sauce when we already paid!! I was furious...Why did he pay extra for the sauce you're wondering? He really wanted the sauce. Even more irate, I had my husband go back to the restaurant to show them the email on my phone that clearly proves that I paid extra for the sauce already. I had clear evidence that I paid and the cashier STILL continued to argue with him and refused to give us sauce, even after he showed her the phone receipt for evidence. My husband was upset and expressed how we're not coming back here EVER AGAIN. We were loyal high paying customers and the cashier responded " I don't care" WOW!! We eat sushi a lot, and this is the worst I've had in Chicago. The chicken in the Fried Rice w/ Fried Chicken is hard, chewy like leather. And there are "xtras" in the rice, namely tomato, pineapple and cucumber. I didn't order the Aloha Rice, but it looks like they took a version of Aloha and added chicken 'jerky' strips. As for the Portage roll, there was no tempura and they said the crispy noodles are what they use for tempura. What??? NOT the same. There were no scallions on or in the roll, and the tuna was not seared as the menu description stated. I called and the man who made my Portage roll apologized, said they'd give me a 20% credit, then he hung up on me so I didn't even have a chance to tell him about the chicken. "Ninja Sushi & Thai Restaurant" sneaked to the spot that used to be a stingy, austere hot dog joint. I constantly pass through this part of Central, to and from work. I said to myself, "umm...pretty cozy dine-in and take-out place...need to try it whenever I get a chance." This evening hubby and I ordered via YelpEat24 app. I'm totally not a Thai food connoisseur, even though many Americans like to mistaken "Taiwanese" as an equivalence to "Thai" (I was born in Taiwan). In spite of this confusion, our experience with Ninja was, for the most, positive. For $26 and some change, we had the Tom Kha soup with chicken, Rama with beef, golden curry noodle with chicken, and Thai iced tea. As soon as hubby took the first sip of the Thai iced tea, he shouted out, "OMG! They need to be easy on the sugar." I totally agreed with him because the taste of tea was almost non-existent; all we felt was an excessive amount of sugar. Unfortunately, we would either want to skip it or ask for unsweetened next time around. The Tom Kha soup was delicious, but I would probably ask for a "spicier" version. We thought the prices were quite reasonable for the neighborhood standard. The app. quoted 10-35 minutes for pickup, and our order was finalized and ready as soon as hubby walked into the door. We will continue work through the rest of menu and definitely patronize Ninja again. My go-to for Thai food delivery! They have a great lunch menu selection at an affordable price that usually includes the entree/sushi and a choice of appetizer or miso soup if you get the sushi special. The customer service is always great! I never have a problem with any of my orders and they usually deliver fast. They'll usually give a timeframe of forty minutes or so but it's usually delivered within 20-30 minutes. I've also dined-in a few times and they are always accommodating! Some of my favorite dishes on the menu include crispy chicken cashew, ginger entree, and avocado curry! The crispy chicken cashew tastes like orange chicken packed with a variety of ingredients such as nuts, carrots, onion, pineapple & broccoli. The ginger entree is usually my healthy go-to that includes baby corn, carrot, onion, fresh mushroom, fresh ginger and tofu (my choice of protein). The avocado curry has avocado, eggplant, green beans, basil with green curry paste and coconut milk. This is my favorite among the other curry dishes simply because I love avocado and it gives just the right amount of spice. This is a nice little sushi restaurant that I found in a pinch situation where we needed fast lunch. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on lunch. First I'll start with the positive items. Food quality - The sushi was very good, I preferred the filleted fish over the rolls. The salad was not the most interesting of salads I have had at sushi restaurants however the presentation of the lunch platter was quite appealing so I didn't mind that the salad was pretty useless. At the price of the lunch your money goes pretty far even if you decide to leave behind something. I would say the lunch is the best way to get a feel for the different dishes they serve without shelling out too much money. Speed - The food here was almost as fast as going to a fast food burger restaurant. Even my partners heated plate came out within about 15 minutes. Obviously this was during quiet lunch hours however this shows to me that they have a fast moving kitchen that should keep dining here even during busy dinner pretty comfortable speed wise. Water quality - This isn't really often reviewed at restaurants, but it is important to me at this point because I have been to some restaurants with really bad water. The water here was served in an unusual way in a masons jar however was extremely cold and fresh. I was quite happy aside from having to acclimate to the unusual cups. Now the few negatives, which are moreso issues that can be fixed easily. Ambience - The music in the restaurant is far too loud and is set to a hip-hop/rap station which is definitely not fitting for an upscale dining experience. The music is not relaxing and I found it gave me a headache and made me rush to finish my meal so I could leave. I would be happy to remove this statement and upgrade to a 5 star review if this restaurant played music from a library of their own instead of playing over the air radio with loud rap and commercials, it just seems amateurish. In addition to this the restaurant has no light diffusion in the windows which might make dining here on extremely sunny days uncomfortable. It is also a very small dining area which may seem uncomfortable to some patrons. Accessibility - This is also not often reviewed, the interior of the restaurant would be rather cramped to navigate with a wheelchair and the restaurant has a very small double foyer. Someone could enter the restaurant with assistance in a wheelchair however once inside navigation would be difficult, I do not recommend this restaurant for people using wheelchairs and orthopedic devices. My final word, I like this restaurant, but the current atmosphere makes me want to do carry out from here rather than dining in for my future patronage unless upgrades are made. read more
