This ON-the-beaten-path place is still basically off the beaten path, as it is a nondescript hidden gem tucked away inside a wine, beer, and cheese store right on 9th Avenue in NYC! And, not many people know about it, so you can usually get a seat immediately. In fact, I hesitate writing this review because I'm reluctant to alert the masses about Vintners, but, alas, I'm letting the cat out of the bag! So what is the deal with this place? What exactly makes it special? Everything, really! From the service to the food to the drinks to the daily specials! It's all good. Here are a few highlights: - Drinks and drink specials - Vintners is wine and beer only but they carry an array of unique beers and wines. Plus, they have specials every night on both wine, bubbly, and beer. And, you can't beat the prices--like $5 each for the specials! - Appetizers - I recommend the cheese fondu, any of their dips, and the chorizo salad. All of these are shareable portions, by the way... and all tasty! - Sandwiches - Best grilled cheese you will ever have. Also try their gravy with any of the meat sandwiches (just ask) and dip those sandwich until your heart is content! Yum. I've gone back to Vintner's tons since my original review, and at this point I have to bump my stars up. This place is spectacular. Service is ultra friendly and they've since improved the seating area by taking out the bar that lined the wall and adding several tables instead. It looks much more elegant now. My current love there (which won't surprise any of my regular readers) is the brioche salad that includes mixed greens, endive, beets, candied pecans and a generous helping of bread slices. This salad is ginormous, but somehow I manage to demolish it every time. Absolutely awesome. I've also had a couple sandwiches as well. There is a roast beef sandwich with a spiced mayo that is absolutely delicious. Their turkey sandwich is also quite tasty and I'm happy to say their turkey is nice and moist. I'm a regular customer and will continue to be for quite some time! read more

The servers were gracious enough to put the tables together for us without hesitation. We sat down and they quickly gave us their menus. Food: Salad - One of the gals ordered "Boucheron Goat Cheese" - red and yellow beets, seasoned pecans, endive, arugula, radicchio & aged balsamic vinaigrette - Fresh and crispy! Taste like the ingredients were fresh from the farmer's market vs the bag salads. NOTE: The salad is big enough to share between 2-3 people. Paninis - Two of us (one of them is me) ordered "Swiss" - gruyere, apple, pine nuts & grilled asparagus with a honey drizzle on a baguette. Perfect! It was sweet and savory at the same time. The melted gruyere and grilled asparagus gave it the savoriness but the the thinly sliced apples sticking to the honey brushed baguette gave it the sweetness. The sprinkle of pinenuts just pulled everything together! Though it was both sweet and savory...none of the ingredients overpowered another and it didn't taste heavy nor greasy ...well-balanced tasty sandwich Sandwich - Another ordered "Roast Turkey" - brie, mustard, lettuce & tomato on a baguette. The sandwich wasn't Katz deli sandwich but it was a hefty sandwich with freshly sliced tomatoes and lettuce. The guy who ordered it said it was amazingly delicious. A good size for a hungry guy because he finished maybe about 70% of it. Fondue - For the table, we ordered "Cheddar & Ale" - Medium sharp cheddar & geary's hampshire ale - it comes with bread, apples and sausages. The fondue was super smooth and was perfect for those who are trying fondue for the first time and don't want to try the stinky cheese fondue. Simple enough for those fondue virgins but delicious for the fondue experts. When we ran out of apples, the server was glad to give us more upon request. Beverages: We order a lager?! (sorry but I dont' drink alcohol much) but ordered a pitch of that type of beer. Looking at the menus, you can get a bottle of wine for an average of $20-$25 Sides: Chips didn't come with the sandwich but a good amount of olives came with our sandwiches. Dessert - didn't see any dessert laid out on display so we bought 2 "Cafe Tasse" brand chocolate bars - Noir (dark chocolate) & Lait Noisettes (milk chocolate with hazelnuts) - both delicious but I preferred the dark chocolate over the milk chocolate OVERALL: Reasonably priced place to bring friends for good conversations while letting time pass and leaving behind the noise of NYC bars but having access to a long list beer and wine. Only CON - The cups of water were filled up once upon request. It could've been filled it up a bit more often but I presume he didn't because we had a pitcher of beer. While this small place has a great selection of beers, cheeses, and meats know that you are certainly paying through the nose for it's location. I recall getting some cheese here once and it was alright. Pricey, but alright - it wasn't anything I haven't tried before at any local gourmet place. Why am I giving the place two stars? It's because when my friend asked why the sopressata was $24.99/ lb and the guy simply said it is because it was dry aged. Frankly it tasted like regular salami, only a lot fattier and not dry aged. Dry aged = hard. It wasn't even hard as the fat was melting in my mouth. I think the only reason for me to come back is perhaps try the salad or sandwiches here my friend raves about, or perhaps take advantage of a 10% off a custom 6-pack. read more

Great selection and helpful staff. Just stopped by to pick up a few bottles and walked away impressed. Although I didn't get their names, two gentlemen really went out of their way to help me find the right selection. For the roses, they asked if I wanted the chilled version, and then picked them out from the fridge in the back room... Prices were competitive and the selection/layout was excellent as well. '5-STAR rating' for the small next door annex, where they sell and serve wine, an extensive selection of beer and a wonderful selection of gourmet cheeses and breads (supplied by Sullivan Street Bakery)! Walk in here and immediately you are surrounded by the flavorful aromas of fromages--in all its pungent glory! Come by in the late afternoon, and you might get a chance to sample over a dozen different cheeses from all over the world! Many sandwiches are made to order -- but the most awesome bargain is getting a fresh mozzerella, tomato, fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil on a crunchy-soft baguette. They include a generous portion of olives on the side. A steal at only $5.99! They also offer tapas plates (babagounoush, dolmas, marinated figs). A definite pit stop on the way to Central Park or the Hudson River to pick up supplies for an picnic! They bring in wines from excellent vineyards. Ninth Avenue Vintner is only lacking a wider selection. Next door is the Beer and Cheese shop with a little nook in the back. Plenty of delicious cheeses are available for grazing. The cheeses are all top quality, some are breath-taking. They also sell meats, tapenades, marmalades etc. What could they do to earn that coveted 5 Star Review? Expand. So this is the story of what a fool am I. I have walked past this place a million times and I've said I need to check it out. About 10 months later I finally walk in. I was invited to a cocktail party on Saturday night and decided it would be a great idea to bring some cheese and wine. Aha! i thought of Vintner and quickly headed over there. Looking for a chilled pinot i found my favorite wine from Room Service. PrimaTerra, the wine w/ the fish sitting on the beach. I was surprised to learn that the wine was only $9 so i picked up 2 bottles. After I paid, I was told that if I take my wine receipt over to the cheese shop I get 10% off all cheeses if I show my receipt! PLUS PLUS!!! So I walk into the cheese shop (its separate from the wine shop) and I'm quickly drawn the the various type of manchegos, bries, cheddars, parmesans and goudas. 5 yrs aged 10 years aged! I was in cheese heaven. There are little samples you can try before committing to a cheese. Also you can have them cut a custom hunk of cheese for you. They also have a wide array of paninis to order. They have a small section in the back where you can hang out, eat your cheese or panini and order a pitcher of their specialty beer. Vintner gets 5 stars but I get 1 for being a fool and avoiding this place for almost 10 months. read more

I would love this wine shop even if it weren't my neighborhood spot! Wines: The selection is diverse and well-chosen- I usually aim for the $10-20 range when buying a bottle, and they have many wonderful choices. They also carry a few different wines from one of my favorite wineries- a vineyard in Alto Adige called Alois Lageder. Yum! Prices: Very fair- I like to comparison shop amongst different wine stores in the city, and their prices are average or cheaper than average for the wines they carry. Service: Excellent! I love taking my time and really browsing the selection when I go into a wine store, and when I am asked every 5 minutes if I need help, I get irritated. The salespeople are very hands-off and let me read labels and pick through their selection without pressure and in peace. However, they are very knowledgeable and will gladly help and recommend good wines if you need any advice. I have often asked for recommendations based on other wines they carry (or even don't carry but know) that I like, and end up buying bottles I might not have considered but end up enjoying. Also, they are very accommodating. I was looking for something they did not carry (Becherovka) and they offered to order me a single bottle and sell it to me at cost! Who does that?! Gotta love a place that knows how to reward - and reinforce- customer loyalty. Extra credit: the Beer & Cheese store next door! Delicious cheeses (they usually have lots of samples out... yum), great beer selection, a few nice wines by the glass, and tasty bites to eat. I recommend the fondue! This is the best wine/liquor/cheese shop in Hell's Kitchen. All of the employees here are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I always ask them for advice on wines because they can ALWAYS point me in the right direction. They don't try to sell you something out of your price range and always have a great selection. The store is immaculate and is organized REALLY well - I love that. They also have quite a few refrigerators so it is the perfect place to pick up a bottle of sparkling or white wine before a party or even a day in the park (I am not condoning public drinking but...) Wine accessories and glasses are also available - the quality of the items are better than you'd usually find in a wine shop. The liquor selection - for a wine store - is actually pretty good and the prices are reasonable. The cheese and beer shop has a nice selection of prepared food and delicious cheeses. In general both stores are laid out nicely, organized well and have great employees. read more

Formerly a 4 star sandwich spot, now a 3 at best. Despite the fact that they have an ENORMOUS selection of bottled beer (guessing north of 100 different kinds, cold and ready to be consumed) the sandwiches have been slipping the last few times I have been there. Prosciutto with goat cheese & fig spread - used to be great, but the last time I had it the goat cheese had clearly been sitting around a bit. It lacked the freshness that I expected from past sandwiches. Turkey with brie, lettuce, tomato & honey mustard (the mustard is spicy and is damn good). The mustard actually might be what drives me to select this sandwich. If you are a first timer, I recommend giving this one a shot (I welcome your feedback) Important to know - you can be the only person in there, order a sandwich and it will still take 10 - 15 minutes. I have never understood what actually takes so long. The sandwiches are not complex or difficult to make, but in maybe the 8 times I have been there have never received the sandwich is less then that timeframe. Knowing this, I recommend grabbing a Dogfish 90 or Nantucket Whales Tale (if it's in stock) to pass the time. read more

Hands down, the best place to go get your beer. They have a vast selection, and the guys who work there really know their stuff. If you don't know what to get due to the overwhelming amount of choices, ask them for advice. Oh, also great place to fill your growlers. You can sit here to drink, but its more of a take out. The sitting area is pretty small, but it is nice. They also have a lot of fresh cheese, meat, etc. Their sandwiches are made with such great ingredients, that they really can't be beat. They close the grate 15 minutes before closing hours and are gone 10 minutes before the store is supposed to be closed. 2. Their wines are priced higher than local competitors like Grace on 10th Avenue by $2 to $3 dollars a bottle. 3. Most of their wines are $18 and up. All of the wines and liquors were priced cheaper than pretty much all of the stores around it. As a reference point for scotch drinkers, the Macallan 12 was $56. Pretty good price for midtown. One of the primary reasons I loved Hell's Kitchen when I lived there, the Vintner provides a great assortment of wines and spirits. The one thing I always appreciated, though, was the fact that the staff there was always cool, helpful, and laid back. I go here 2 or 3x per week for wine. They have an ok selection (and a huge California wall) and their prices are great. They really don't have anything bad, so I usually just pick one randomly that is in my price range. The bearded guy at the counter is really nice and helpful, and is always willing to look something up for me if he doesn't know the answer to my question. This place has everything that is delicious in the world. 5 stars purely for the beer, cheese, and food store on the right side bc I think the wine store is a little pricey. They have an amazing beer selection with 10% off when you buy 6. Its worth it to pick up the fancy beers considering what they would charge for them at a bar. The back area where they serve food is a little like Narnia. You make your way through the aisle of beer and cheese and suddenly you find yourself in a land where moderately priced gorgeous sandwiches filled with the freshest ingredients await you. Take a cold bottle of beer and they will pour it for you, or go for a glass of wine. They throw in some nuts and dried fruit to accompany your sandwich or pannini. Great place to pick up cheeses (some priced lower than the Food Emporium on 43rd and 10th). They have a very nice selection of bottled beer here, and some very tasty brews on tap. They sell and also will fill your own growlers here, and the prices are not highway robbery- $19 for a 64 oz. growler. I've ordered fruit and cheese plates here for parties and they have done a great job putting them together. I've never dined here, but from what I've seen the sandwiches and paninis look very tasty. Ooof, what a relief to find a really great sandwich, just a basic, good sandwich with excellent ingredients and gorgeous, delicious bread. Seems like they should be everywhere in this city but truly such a thing is rare. Crusty, delicious baguette, fresh roast beef, some kind of awesome white cheddar, onions, tomato, lettuce and mayo. See, really simple but brilliant. The sandwich was huge; I got it for lunch but it covered me for dinner too. Plus I got a generous handful of wonderful olives on the side. $10. Counter help was quick, clear, really nice. The store carries everything you need to have a nice cocktail party at your house: great cheeses, interesting fruit pastes, dried and cured meats, olives, nuts, cheese boards, cheese knives, tons of different beers and all the wine you could want in their liquor store next door. Seems like you can taste things before you buy tho i wasnt there for that. They also have some seats in the back, maybe 6 places, which seemed like a really cozy place to chill and eat some good food. Did I mention that my sandwich was awesome? Best part, right near my office...score! Went back a couple of times after the first review. A huge selection of hard-to-find beers and ciders that you can pick and choose from and put into an empty six-pack container to take home. Unfortunately, we didn't realize how pricey it was...We came in at almost $35 for the 6'er so definitely don't expect a discount! They also have a few taps so you can purchase growlers as well. Cheese...Lots of samples laying around to try. We ended up with a fantastic hard, sharp cheese from Switzerland. Good stuff and reasonably priced. Service was helpful and speedy. read more

I had started making this store my go-to wine shop in the neighborhood. They offer 15% discount on 12 bottles if you pay cash. I have been taking advantage of this offer. The last time I went there I picked bottles that would average to 40$ a bottle as well as two bottles of veuve champagne. To my surprise and despite the past discounts the guy at the cashier refused to honor the discount for those two bottles of veuve. He wanted to convince me buy Moet instead! So I walked out. I went to Cellar 53 on 10th Ave and 53rd. The same price veuve champagne which I bought a case were sold to me with 20% discount. How stupid Vinter wine store could be to upset a neighborhood customer for a discount of 20$ on 500$ worth of purchase. But thanks to their bad behavior I found a better wine store with higher discount on all bottles. Also Cellar 53 honors the discount even when you pay with credit card. read more

Came here on a whim as it was listed in one of TWO stores in Manhattan that had Whipped Lightning (Hazelnut Espresso Whipahol = caffeinated 34 proof whipped cream!) The lady at the counter was very friendly, and quickly pointed to the bottles on the counter when asked for the product. Then why three stars? Well, I was quite surprised to pay $14 for a can, as others across the river acquire them for $10... I know we're in Manhattan, but c'mon, this is *absurd.* Also I noticed the Pinot Project tagged for $15, which is higher than in my UES stores. Apparently Winfield-Flynn on 3rd & 38th is the other one with Whipped Lightning, so I may go there to scope out the price and buy a couple of bottles as gifts for NV peeps. read more

A minority, I visited Vintner more for the beer and cheese deli next door to the wine shop rather than the wine itself. LOVED the selection of beer. I felt like a kid in a candy store. There were lots of cheese samples. I lerve me some cheese. Staff really friendly and helpful. Had a lateish lunch, knocked back a couple of delicious beers, and went along my merry way. This review is for the guys next door at the beer and cheese shop. I'd been looking for hobgoblin all over the place out of season (it tends to show up everywhere during Halloween). It's my boyfriend's favorite beer and I wanted to make sure I had some for his birthday weekend. I'd checked the usual suspects, called the US distributor here, called the places she gave me to contact and came up with NADA, zilch, less than 0, hmpf. I'm not easily swayed from my goal so I kept searching.
