This place has got character. There is no fluff. The indoors is mostly the kitchen, which you get to see. And the storefront has racks of bread and pastries, and drip coffee. They also have a soup and salad menu that is reliably fresh and flavorful. My favorite is the Challah bread - it is soft and a little sweet (honey, not refined sugar). I usually get it from their day-old rack. It's 50% off! They often have other breads and scones too. The outdoor area has several seating options. It's covered. There is a restroom. No table service. We visited on a Sat afternoon at around 1:30. There was not much left in the case to choose from. It was our first time here and I really wanted to try something that they are famous for. The donuts made of croissant dough (and I think the girl said they were filled with something) were WAY overpriced. We just couldn't do it for one pastry. Instead we got cinnamon rolls for breakfast the next morning. We microwaved the cinny rolls for a very short time before eating them the next morning. For the price, probably some of the worst cinnamon rolls we have ever had (and we eat a lot of cinnamon rolls). Never again. Maybe the sandwiches are good ? It is nice that they have a dedicated parking lot. This area of downtown Durham is always a crap shoot for parking. read more

I really liked ninth street bakery I was walking in downtown Durham to a local kids store and my son and I stopped here. I am so happy that we did. The first thing I was grateful for was that I parked near my first destination because the parking can be a little tricky! I am unsure if they have designated parking. When I walked into the bakery there was a short line which moved fairly quickly. I quickly noticed that they didn't have anything that my son would like so I asked the guy taking the orders if we could create our own sandwich and he said yes! So I ordered the lentils soup and a turkey sandwich as well as a cookie for my son. We also got a water. The bakery has limited seating inside but there is a big patio outside which everyone seemed to enjoy. Our food didn't take very long which I was happy about. The lentil soup was good and the turkey sandwich looked delicious. If you have to use the restroom you have to walk outside into another building. Which was kind of difficult with a small child. All of the staff were absolutely amazing and I am so grateful that we went. read more

Ninth Street Bakery has been around so long it's often taken for granted. I remember eons ago eating a dill roll at 411 West in Chapel Hill and discovering it was made by Ninth Street. I even found the rolls at Harris Teeter and bought them. I don't know that they make those rolls anymore but we've enjoyed their offerings at the Durham Farmers Market. Lately they've really raised their game with artisan breads like Danish rugbrod and Swedish limpa. Their vegan hand pies and other pastries are also high quality, my favorites are bear claws and cinnamon rolls. I don't visit the actual location too often but I know they've hosted popups and are a reliable lunch spot. Here's to the OG bakery in Durham! read more

Walked in on a Saturday morning to grab a quick bite and this place did not disappoint. Having only have tried their bread and other offerings at the Durham Farmer's Market, it was a good change to go to their actual location. They have a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options, apart from the breads they offer. Me and my husband shared the Asiago scone and a vegan tartine. We both loved the tartine. The scone could have done with a little more cheese. Their menu enlisted salads, sandwiches, and soups as well. They also have a free library on their premise and it is a very cute addition. There is space to sit indoor as well as on their patio. Overall, this is a very decent place to grab pastries and bread on the go. I will definitely be back to try more of their offerings. read more

My review is based off of a Yelp tour of the bakery: Alex the bakerman was amazing!!!! Let's start off in the beginning. The location of the ninth Street bakery café is awesome. The bakery is placed Grand Central to everything in the middle of Durham. The only thing I can say is that parking was a beast. Now mind you we attended the event during the peak hour where everyone is trying to get to the restaurants that are nearby and the hotels. There are several local parking deck's that are nearby that actually offer free parking after 7 PM. All of the street parking is free after 7 PM as well. The bakery smelled so good whenever I walked in. There was lots to see and lots of things you wanted to taste. The café was closed when we arrived but the menu was still on the board. The items offered seem to be awesome as there was something for everyone. First off I must give props... this was the cleanest bakery I've ever been to! Their sani grade must have been a A++++ (LOL). Alex (the bakerman) put on an awesome demonstration. I found it amazing that there's so much detail that goes into creating bread. Alex did a great job breaking everything down for us and teaching everyone all about what the bakery had to offer. He also did a great job teaching us the process of actually baking the bread. There were many different mixers and ovens that the facility had access to but Alex taught us on two of them that were his favorites. After hanging out with Alex and the ninth Street bakery team I now view baking bread on a whole different platform. As stated before there is a lot that goes into the process. There's much attention that must be put forth. The temperature is important and the ingredients that go into the bread is important as well. The huge egg salad sandwich came with a perfect half slice pickle. With the add-on of an equally oversized double chocolate cookie, we were all set for our flight. At the airport the sandwich went through an intense security check with a beefy officer gently squeezing the wax paper covered wrapping. He finally nodded ok. It came close to but could not actually be classified as a liquid item. I can attribute the pass given to the white bread, which held its own against the egg salad's wetness. I first encountered NSB when a friend and I went for coffee. I also had a Danish it was delicious and the coffee was good also. When I went to check out I saw all the different types of bread, I got the sunflower seed loaf to take home the family loved it. Sad to give this place a low rating. Love that it has been a long established business since the 80s in Durham, and a new owner has carried on the legacy. I had the sandwiches and the food itself, the bread especially, was great. The problem -- customer service. The curly brown haired dude at the cash register -- sly up charging in the receipt (adding avocado when that was never ordered and not given, two things had to go wrong there for this to happen, almost like it was coordinated) and giving me half the order -- resulting in overcharging the customer and needing to go back for the second half of the order when I opened the bag. In the end, not a big deal but weird financial fiddling has little gain and big costs (customer trust). If you go, just check your receipts and bags to make sure it's all right! read more

Walked into the bakery and the first thing you notice is how amazing it smells. Plenty of good items on the menu which came highly recommend from the cashier. I was looking for lunch so I ordered the veggie hummus sandwich and a veggie hand pie. I ate outdoors on the porch which was nice and peaceful around 2pm. But I highly recommend taking a visit: their made-to-order sandwiches are some of the best in Durham, they offer day-old bread and pastries for a discounted price, their outdoor patio is comfortable and well designed, and the smell of their fresh bread and baked good is worth the trip alone.
