Olney has DESPERATELY needed an Indian restaurant for so long, I can't tell you how thrilled I was when Nirvana finally opened. I can't figure out why they aren't absolutely packed whenever I come through the door. The samosas are fabulous, the naan is fantastic and the chicken vindaloo is addictive! like several other one-star reviews, mine was hidden by yelp. so i'm raising it in hopes it achieves visibility. the food is on the lower end of passable, and the portions are small. there is no buffet at lunch, which is essential for an indian restaurant in my view. it is a one-star experience. here's why i will never eat here again, even if they add a buffet: it really looks like the yelp reviews are being manipulated. there is no way there are this many satisfied customers, some of whom purportedly live in san francisco and opened a yelp account just to tell people about the great dinner they had in olney maryland. numerous other reviews are equally suspicious. there is no way that this place is a gem or a jewel. there is no delicious food ahead. a lot of the "likes" are very peculiar as well. is nothing sacred? not even yelp? read more

I love Indian food and was excited to see Nirvana come to Olney. Overall the food was good and I really enjoyed it. Given that it is a new restaurant, there were some kinks. My husband and I ordered a bottle of white wine, they didn't have our first selection (the more expensive bottle), so we went with our back up which was cheaper but not chilled ahead of time. We are tacky enough to throw in some ice cubes so no worries, we moved on. We ordered extra naan with onions that the waiter goofed and thought was a replacement for the plain naan. The goof played to our favor as there was no way we could have eaten the second order. Again, we moved on. Our dinner was delicious, hot and had no complaints. We finished with a little dessert, some gulab jamin which was yummy but would have been even more delightful with some vanilla ice cream. Once the check came, we noticed that the waiter had charged us for the wrong bottle of wine so we had to get that fixed. Took 15 mins to get seated tonight and the service was just ok. Wine was very sweet and that was the only choice for white wine by the glass. Food is average and the lighting was too bright. Need more servers, more room between tables and spicier food. read more

The food here is exceptional. Best Indian food I've had in the DMV! The week night dinner special is a great deal - two entrees, rice and naan for $15.99. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Channa Masala and both were delicious. Also, we came on a Monday and bottles of wine were half price. Grateful to now have an Indian restaurant in Olney that is officially my new go-to spot. This Saturday for dinner I started out with samosas, which were fresh and crispy on the outside while warm and fluffy on the inside, a welcome change from the overly cooked versions I'm used to in the DC area. I shared a biryani and a butter chicken with my wife for the entree portion of our memorable culinary experience. Both were exquisitely tasteful. The biryani had a deep aromatic spice that captured the essence of authentic Indian cuisine and the butter chicken was creamy and had a richness in flavor that made for the perfect soothing, complementary dish. Absolutely delicious! Our first trip here was to dine-in. The place was packed and the orders for call-in were coming in one right after the other! Our server was good, food was incredible and the owner is a gem! He came to our table, introduced himself and shook our hands. I appreciate great hospitality as much as great food. My husband and I tried Nirvana two nights ago. We ordered the Chicken Tikka, the Tandoori Lamb Chops, Mango Lassi, and Saag Paneer. The lamb chops were incredible! When we were served, they were slightly too rare so we sent them back to the kitchen. The owner came out with the chops a few minutes later, done to perfection! The flavors were incredible! The Mango Lassi was probably the best I've tasted, the Chicken Tikka was very delicious, but I have to say that the Saag Paneer was so good, that my husband and I were fighting over it. I held back from licking the bowl when done! We literally rolled out of the restaurant, overstuffed, smiles on our faces and happily uncomfortable! The food was delicious, the owners and the waitstaff very nice and I will definitely go back there again! read more

Went to Nirvana for lunch today because we ate at Bombay Gaylord for years before it burned down. Was so excited to hear that they were reopening in Olney. Although they didn't have a buffet the lunch special was wonderful. You get to pick two items and it comes with salad and rice. The chicken tiki masala tasted just like I remember. It was so nice when the owner came to our table and recognized us from the Silver Spring restaurant. It was so good to see him! We can't wait to go back because everything was delicious. Dined here for an individual lunch before I bring people with me. I must say that I was pleasantly delighted! I had the lunch sampler of Chicken (all white meat) Curry and the potatoe and peas. Both were great with the Basmati Rice ... and plenty of extra sauce to dip the house-made naan. I like the heat as I requested that for the Curry, and mild for the potatoes and peas. Both were excellent and will appeal to many palates. Nice beer selection, both imported and domestic, and a selection of wines existed but I did not indulge at lunch. My wife and I tried this restaurant for the first time tonight. I had a mixed grille plate and she had a cauliflower and potatoe vegetarian dish. They were both OUTSTANDING! Prices are moderate. Service was excellent and personable although the server had to continually move out of the road as the aisles between the tables are a bit narrow. This place is a keeper. It's a small restaurant, so it was no surprise that there was to be a little wait; however the wait was worth it. Everyone in the party got something different so we could sample multiple dishes in the same night! It was all delicious! The lamb Biriyani was so tasty! I went to Nirvana for lunch with a group of friends, and we loved it! They had a lunch menu in which you could pick two small entrees, which gave us a chance to sample a lot of different things. The appetizers were great, and the owner was friendly and helpful. It was quiet, so we could have a conversation without yelling, which was a huge plus. We enjoyed a late evening midweek meal. The staff were gracious although we arrived only shortly before the kitchen was closing so we ordered quickly. The dishes - ChickenTikka Marsala and Chicken Korma were very good and the sauce rich (we liked the Tikka better, the Korma being almost too mild) and the rice fragrant and the plain and onion naan delicious. The portions were good. The ambiance was excellent. We will certainly go again and hope others will support this worthy addition to Olney's dining options. I cannot evaluate the quality of the food since we didn't get that far! As Olney residents of partial Indian descent, we really wanted to support an Indian restaurant in town. When we walked in at about 6:00 pm on a Tuesday night, there were no other customers. This gave us pause, but we got a table and perused the menu. We decided on the dinner special for three of us. Since it came with two entrees, rice, and naan, we asked if we could substitute garlic naan for the plain naan. We also explained that we were willing to pay the 70 cent difference. They refused this simple request, saying that if we wanted garlic naan we would have to place a separate order for it. It was not the cost but the principle. If this new restaurant with a small customer base does not have the flexibility to honor small requests, which present no financial burden, such as ours, I hope they are soon replaced by one which can. We walked out and had a great $150 dinner in CAVA, which was packed. read more
