Ate here a couple times. Most recently on NYE. Food is pretty darn good. I will say that I did like the atmosphere at Nisen in woodbury more than this location. Since that one is no longer open we've been going to the commack location. Staff is very friendly and food always comes out within a reasonable time frame (based on the day and time). Menu is pretty expansive with a range of selection. Definitely would recommend if you haven't already been here read more

First off, I love the atmosphere of this place- really cool/trendy aesthetic. They have different color lights inside which is really cool at night, and each booth is like in its own little section, so you have some privacy. Perfect place for a romantic date or to hang out with friends. The food here is great and fresh quality- I got sashimi and it was really fresh and delicious. read more

Two thumbs up. This place always delivers the best meal and atmosphere. Upon entering is has a somewhat romantic feel....but don't let that stop you if you are alone or just with friends. We started with the avocado salad. The avocado was buttery and the ginger dressing a nice compliment. We then ventured into a few rolls. This time we tried : Black Angel Roll, Pink Lady, and the House Roll. All were fantastic but I'll be back for the Black Angel for sure again. In terms of parking it is in a strip mall as typical in this area so there is plenty of parking. Stop by and enjoy! read more

If we want yummy, fresh sushi in a fun ambiance in the Commack area- Nisen is always our go-to spot! I've been coming to Nisen for years. I feel particularly inclined to write this review because Elsie is singlehandedly one of the best waitresses I've ever had. We went for dinner and ate outside, which was so nice. We started with edamame (free if you check in on Yelp) and shared a tuna avocado salad, bok choy & some sushi rolls. Beauty Alaska & TOM rolls are my two favorite - if you like non-fried, raw, not-that-spicy -- I highly recommend. The salad portion is huge & you get lots of tuna. We then shared the layered crepe dessert & some dessert sake shots, per Elsie's suggestion. The dessert was shockingly light & refreshing and the dessert sake was SO good. Some friends ended up meeting us & we had such a fun night drinking al fresco and hanging out with Elsie! Awesome night at a great neighborhood spot. :) read more

i have been to this place before but it has been awhile. I made our reservation for 7 through open table. I arrived around 650 and a few of the people i came with were there a little earlier and were having some drinks at the bar. once i checked in with the hostess staff that seemed very busy i told them we will be by the back bar while they get the table ready. time went by around 715...they never came to get us until i walked back over and said yes i checked in my party is all here is our table ready we had a reservation for 7. they were able to seat us right away then. but i wonder if i didn't come back to tell them would they come get us? I did check in and do their yelp deal. we ordered the edamame. the edamame were delicious almost had a little crust to them and came with a lime to squeeze over it. really good that way i will have to try it when i am home and making some. Now i was with a group of friends who i have not seen in a few months so we did order drinks but the poor the waiter had to come back maybe 3 times to ask us if we were ready. but he was very patient about it. once we placed our orders we awaited the arrival of our food. I did order a mojito and the waiter suggested we have a special mango mojito would you like to try it. i said sure. sad to say he came back and said unfortunately we can't make any more mojitos we do not have anymore mint. BUMMER. i asked if they had sangria. he said yes white so i was content they had something for me to order..that i would enjoy.. it was good a little on the strong side. so that means they make it from scratch with mixed alcohol and has some fresh mango, pineapple and fruit in it. very refreshing. i ordered the Spicy Kani Salad. it wasn't spicy at all but i was glad because i am not a big fan of spicy. i was going to toughen it up and eat it because i really wanted to have some kani salad. one of my friends ordered the chilean sea bass meal or so she thought she said meal. she also ordered fried rice, but the waiter did not mention it already came with white rice. when the busboy came over to bring us our chopsticks for those who ordered sushi he gave her a pair. she said i ordered a meal so i would need a fork... the guy looked confused and went ot go find out waiter. i think the waiter did not realize what she had ordered and forgot to ask her if she wants a soup or a salad. and since she was a little hesitant on the decision to which he said you know what ill bring you both. she was like okay. said well do you want soup or salad because your meal comes with it. she said everything was delicious sushi is always fresh and neatly displayed. when 2 of us asked for our sushi to be wrapped up because we were unable to finish. naturally you would think they bring it to the back wrap it in 2 separate bags etc. well it came back in 2 separate containers which looked like they had just been washed? and they were in one bag. without chopsticks or soy sauce on the side. so we had to again grab the waiter and said we need another bag we don't live together. mind you this was a group of 4 women. but as far as the wet lids it was just the tops that were wet.. very odd . the insides were dry. now the bill comes and as women we just decided to divide the bill up evenly and reviewed it. he attempted to have the bill itemized based on who ordered what but that wasn't accurate. and they did charge us for the edamame. so again we had to call him back and have him make a change. i understand the edamame order was $6 but if we ordered something based on something you offer as promotional for letting all our friends/ family/yelp community know where we went at least make sure it is taken off the bill. overall the food was great, service was okay i think the waiter was new, but he should have payed a little more attention to the little errors. we will return but maybe get someone with more experience? read more

Had a poor experience. Went on a Sunday at 4 p with the family. Asked our server for our standard sauces one of which was Sri racha. She said the establishment ran out. We couldn't believe it. My husband ordered a ramen soup and wanted to split it into bowls for the kids. Upon asking for bowls the server became frustrated to have to get bowls. We waited 15 min before the bowls came by which time the soup became cold. We then had to ask for spoons and silverware. Between the waits in between each request we were left to feel our money could have been spent much better somewhere else. We pulled another server over and asked about the Sri racha running out. The sushi is delicious and the service was excellent. Came in late on a Saturday with a friend for girls night and the drinks did not disappoint. They were closing and one of the servers even invited us for a complimentary sake. The sushi rolls were delicious and fresh. So after months of lockdown I realized that what I missed the most was sushi from my favorite restaurant. So as soon as we had the chance my mom and I went to enjoy their outside dining and boy did it feel good. The weather was excellent and the service was on par. The restaurant really went out of their way to make you feel comfortable and adhere to all of the new rules. Plates and cutlery all arrived wrapped in saran wrap and the waiters were all wearing masks and gloves. We were evenly spaced from other diners, and I'm happy to say that all of my old favorite rolls were just as good. And my fig and tea martini was exactly what I needed. Fast efficient service wonderful private booths, they are seeing wear our booth was ripped yet taped to cover the damage. Our acrylic table was melted yet usable. Decor is chic modern and restaurant offers lots of seating. Great sushi and appetizer lists yet actual hot dinner or entire menu was very limited to 3 basic types. Great place for date nights. Sushi is good and the drinks are amazing.the food is delicious. I have never had a disappointing experience. It has a really cool atmosphere and decor. BEWARE METAL BRUSH PARTS IN FRIED RICE!!! My wife bit down on and could have swallowed some kind of rigid sharp metal brush bristle. I knownthis could result in death if swallowed. I was eating with two small childern also. I will have nightmares about what could have happened. The waitress was very caring and apologetic she comped the cost of the rice but that's not enough considering that we would have gone through hell if my wife did swallow that. The amazing thing is that no manager or supervisor or chef came over to check on us. They just brought us the bill. Please be careful!!!! I will report this to health department. First time here. Stopped in on a Wednesday night for a quick bite. Had a Tokyo roll ($8) and miso soup ($3). Customer service: there were multiple servers helping out and they were all attentive. Ambiance is so relaxing and nice as it is dim. Very nice layout. I was comfy. It was great also receiving a nice hot towel when menus were given to you to clean your hands. I only gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I have more to try. However prices are a bit pricey for dinner menu. But I'm sure will be worth it for a date night. Tokyo roll was yummy. Japanese style stuff. I'm going to buck the trend here and tell you I was disappointed by this place. Let's clear this up right now: this is not a Japanese restaurant or lounge but rather it is Japanese style food items prepared by a hodge-podge of staff (mostly Chinese). While the sushi is visually appealing, the texture kind of sucked ass and frankly, texture is what the Japanese sushi art is all about. The code word to watch out for on the menu is "chopped". Anything chopped is really pulverized into a mushy substance - my guess is that they use a food processor to "chop" tuna etc. When this disaster is put into a roll it is a nasty mess. For example, the Huntington roll is chopped yellowtail and chopped tuna in a spicy aioli - but the result is a pile of mush wrapped in seaweed - when you bite it is just squishes around your mouth- you cannot even chew it. Sort of reminded me of baby food... Same disaster awaited the Volcano roll. Chopped tuna and some other stuff inside and more chopped something lumped on top - so it was a double mush-disaster. I almost choked on this goo. WTF? The rice barely gives you anything to get your teeth on. If you know me, you know I usually devour sushi; first mine then yours should you be a slow eater. This is the first time I've ever left rolls sitting on a plate. (That time in Richmond, VA when I ordered 10 rolls doesn't count) To be fair, the regular sushi items looked good but I was so turned off by the mush-fest that I decided to cut my losses and get the hell out of there. This place is trying hard to be a NYC hot spot with their lounginess - it is nice inside but I'll pass it in favor of some awesome sushi elsewhere... Go if you must - but I warned you. I've been here several times in 2013 all during lunch aka waiting for my car to be ready from across the street at Sears Auto. The decor is nice and loungey but its all about the Sushi. Its overhyped in the sense that people say this is the best Sushi joint on Long Island, haha no. House Roll, Nisen Roll, and Volcano are all real good. Some of the other rolls are okay but nothing mind blowing. The service here can sometime become Zzz. I definitely prefer Aji 53 in Smithtown over this especially since their similar in price. read more

Don't forget to check into Yelp! Free shishito peppers or edamame (we got the peppers). The booths and the bar area look like the best places to be seated at. It was not busy at all when I went. Sure, it was a Wednesday night but you'd think a trendy looking place like this would have a steady customer base - even on weeknights. My boyfriend and I were in a rush to catch a movie, so we didn't order too much. I ordered shrimp tempura appetizer with a side of rice because the entree would have been too much. It was okay. It mostly tasted... fried, simply put. Luckily, the staff was nice enough to accommodate my request of only sweet potatoes as the vegetable portion of the meal. I also wanted to try their sushi while I was there so I ordered toro sashimi and uni sushi a la carte. I think they only had one type of uni that night, so I didn't have much of a choice even if I wanted to try different kinds of uni. (Their menu had Japanese uni, California uni,...) The verdict: toro was great! Uni was so-so; not bad though. My boyfriend ordered a steak but he didn't like it at all. I tried it also and it was bland, just like my tempura. The service was pretty good, so that's a plus. They also gave us one box of the cute Japanese gum each, which was an awesome treat. All in all, I'd come back to try more sushi but I think I'd try to steer clear of anything from the kitchen. read more

We did takeout and ordered sushi/sashimi for two. Price was reasonable for what we got. The quality was decent to good, but I still rather spend extra $20 for sushi/sashimi for two at kotobuki. Overall, it's pretty good in comparison to many other sushi places around the area. Maybe I'll be back to try some rolls especially now they have 15% off until mid september. read more

Went to Nisen Sushi a few nights ago for dinner. It was pretty good. I'd say much better than its Woodbury restaurant. Very contemporary decor. The menu was less "over the top" than Woodbury which I think was better. Still pretty pricy however. A few minor negatives. First is that the person who sat us was going to sit us in a booth which would have been cool had it not been adjacent to the cash register and a garbage can. I asked to be moved and they accomodated. Really, (to restaurant staffers around the globe) you should sit in each seat to get the diner's experience from that seat, especially when the place is only a third full and there are many choices for seating. The other negative was that, in this very contemporary and nice environment, there were three large flat screen TV's playing sporting events. Granted it was in the bar area but about 10 feet high so impossible to ignore. Loose the TVs and be a restaurant. read more

The sign outside is terrible! You can hardly make it out as you walk towards the restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is quite nice. Sushi is always fresh. Offer a great selection of choices. We came in towards the end of the night (1 hour before closing). I typically don't like to arrive at restaurants so late and close to closing, but my friend and I were starving after our movie and thought we would be quick. They sat us without any comments and the food and service was amazing. I just wanted to make a review and let people know how great and professional the staff was at the restaurant. My family & I have been going to Nisen for years both to dine & take out. We have never, ever had a bad experience until this evening. I would have rated Nisen 4 stars, but after tonight's episode did not. My husband & I ordered calamari for an appetizer. We have ordered it before & never had a complaint. In addition to being very chewy, it is as not fresh. We were served old calamari!! It tasted disgusting & we immediately spit it out. We told the waitress & she took it back. We were told that the chef tried it after us & confirmed that it went bad. If you are a chef, how do you not know that the fish you are serving is not fresh????? Makes no sense. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Commack. Every time I go the food is excellent and the service is absolutely phenomenal. The staff brings you got towels before meals and they wait on you accordingly. The sushi is delicious and inexpensive. I highly recommend the dragon roll. The chefs are excellent they prepare the food relatively fast, even when the restaurant is full, and they plates look just as good as the food tastes. I definitely try to got there at least one a month. If you love sushi, you will love this place l! read more

Wow, fabulously fun interior! Reminds me of a place you'd get in the city (think: Trendy). Came here, on a Monday evening, with a friend and sat at bar (we wanted happy hour deal...although you should ask next time if you can get the HH at tables too). Our bartender/waitress was super friendly and great! During HH, you get huge bowl of complimentary edamame (not the greatest but still decent), half off drafts ($3 Sapporo yum), and half off the appetizers! Skipped the apps and got the Volcano Roll and another specialty tuna roll (i forgot the name) -delicious and tasted fresh. Will be coming back! Next time I will save room for the dessert (our waitress recommended the oreos wrapped in funnel cake served with vanilla ice cream). read more

Nisen has been a go to sushi restaurant for us for many years. We have tried many others but always come back. They are very accommodating for special requests. They ordered a case of wine for us when they ran out so we can always have it when we attend. The ambiance is trendy and up to date. Sushi is always fresh. Made a reservation here thinking it would be packed on a weekend. I was surprised that there were plenty of tables available, mostly the booths were full. Hostess wasn't very friendly at all. Came for an early dinner on a Friday with 2 friends. Ordered lamb chop appy. 1 of the 3 pieces came out raw, not appetizing and the flavor of the lamb was lacking freshness and flavor besides it drowned with teriyaki sauce. The lobster roll was 25$ but hey lobster in the middles and steamed lobster on top. It was drowned in balsamic citrus sauce that took away from tasting any fresh lobster that could not be found at all. The service was barely mediocre. Not even a "thank you" when the check arrived either. This place was real good a decade ago or more but I wouldn't come again. Seems the cooks are mediocre as well. Update 11/12/17: Gave this place another chance based on my previous review listed below! Greatly to say I was impressed with the staff but above all the owner. He definitely takes pride in his business and makes for great customer service. #TimeForTheFood that's what you're here for, right? I ordered the same rolls besides the goat cheese one I ordered last time, which were the 2014 Volcano roll, dragon and the spider roll. Everything came out great and to my liking and I'll definitely visit again as per my update to 5 stars. Ordered 4 rolls! 2 were house specialty rolls and the other 2 were classic rolls. The volcano roll was good no complaints about that but here's where the problems occur, spider roll was completely bland. Goat cheese roll had way too much goat cheese which over powered everything else lastly, the dragon roll was completely soggy and falling apart along with the avocado on top being very soft and mushy. I've eaten at many sushi places on Long Island such as Aki, Miko, Minado and Kotobuki which I would recommend but this place definitely not. After hearing so many positive things about this place, I decided to give it a try. Huge mistake. Despite they're mostly good reviews, I found their sushi to be poorly cut with a slimy texture and a very strong, almost rancid fish smell. Not a good sushi fish smell either. Now this review is based on take out so perhaps they use older fish for delivery? Still inexcusable given the extremely high prices; we are talking NYC boutique sushi pricing. They also forgot parts of my order. I do not recommend nor will I go back. And to qualify, I am not new to sushi...have been eating it all over the country for almost 30 years now. read more
