The name "candy store" threw me off but it's okay because Nisshodo has one of the BEST mochi I've ever had. Every time I'm in the island, I plan my itinerary around making a stop here a possibility. Their chi chi dango (both the plain ones - which are white and pink - and the fruit flavored ones - blueberry and orange) have the softest chew and mouthfeel. I love mochi and have eaten enough mochi to have a high bar when it comes to standards for mochi...and the verdict? Nisshodo lives up to them! They also have flavored filled mochi - my favorite was the peanut butter (yellow colored), lilikoi (purple), green tea with red bean filling and lychee (white). Prices are also very reasonable. Texture is good but the underlying flavor varies based on the "ingredients". The lilikoi was great, peanut butter was good. Anything with red bean / azuki bean was dry and chunky. My family has been coming to Nisshodo for probably 18+ years and love making it a big part of our trip when we come back to Oahu. We stop in as soon as we we fly into HNL, and grab enough chichi dango and mochi to last us the entirety of our trip and then call in an order to pick up on the way to the airport. Our family favorites of the filled mochi (by color) are: Yellow - Peanut Butter Medium Green with dimples - Tsumami (smooth lima bean) Peach - Coconut Light Green - Melona flavored Sage Green - Green Tea (the outside is green tea flavored and the inside is chunky red bean) Purple - Lilikoi (passion fruit, my kids love this one) Pink or White - Habutai (smooth red bean) Large White - Daifuku (rough red bean) Light white - Lychee (pretty new flavor) And of course we love the chichi dango (chewy mochi pieces made with milk powder and coated in potato starch) and the kinako dango (coated in roasted soybean flour). Nisshodo is the best mochi, and a true representation of the local flavor and the culture of the island. Much aloha! Also, a pro tip from a Nisshodo employee - to allow the mochi to last the longest when you get home, freeze it! We keep the dango in the freezer in an airtight container and take a few out when we want to eat it ... we let it come to room temperature for 10-15 mins and then enjoy! It will stay pretty fresh for a week or two, but then eventually will be a little chewier as time goes on. They make the best komochi for New Year's ozoni soup. It's Japanese tradition to eat ozoni on New Years Day and having the right mochi to put in the soup makes a big difference to the taste. You have to call to order usually by Thanksgiving and then you pick up your order before New Years Day. I've been using their mochi for about 25 years or more but a few times I've forgotten to order in time. Sometimes I stop by and they have extra to sell but the years they did not I bought elsewhere and the ozoni was not as tasty. For the month of December they close and don't make their sweet mochi. They also sell the kasane mochi which are two big mochi you stack one on top of the other and top with a tangerine at New Years. Of course I LOVE their sweet mochi too. After reading several articles about Nisshodo, I decided to stop in and see what the hype is all about. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, but you can find a spot in the adjacent lot or on the street. Inside, you'll find a case with a colorful selection of mochi. Prices are higher than the pictures on Yelp (around $1.25) and the colors are also a bit different than what you'd normally expect (purple is lilikoi); the latter isn't a big deal but take note when sharing as I got mixed up. I picked up four filled: peanut butter, melon, lilikoi, and coconut. All were super soft and the sweetness was balanced. In terms of service, there was one person on front of me with a lot of questions. Another worker in the back noticed this and took my order which was nice. Overall, I would say worth a visit. The mochi and service were both good. Four stars because I wouldn't say the mochi was particularly memorable but it's also not my dessert of choice. For my dad's service, I was tasked to get the chi chi dango mochi. The two old shool mochi shops immediately came to mind- Nisshodo & Fujiya. I enjoy both of their products, and neither offered a volume discount. So for my quantity of 400, I just had to go with Nisshodo for the best price- sorry Fujiya. For that quantity, Nisshodo asks you order two days prior to pick up. So I placed my order over the phone. On Saturday pick up day, I was running a little late, and I had to be in Hawaii Kai after the pick up. Nisshodo is located in the industrial area makai of the strip mall at Dillingham & Kokea, near the red & white radio antenna tower. Only 3 stalls for parking. When I got there, there was a huge line that was going snarl up my timeline even further! Gave the shop a call, asked if I could bypass the line, and they said yes. Sorry, big order coming in! Inside there 4 customers being served or waiting to be served giving me some big time stink eye. Oh well, I'm on a mission! Finally one of the two shop attendants were free and I told them about my order. After a little miscommunication, she went back to pick them up. I looked at all the custom mochi on display, Nisshodo has the biggest and most varied assortment of mochi! Love their peanut butter and fruit mochis! Didn't want to slow down or distract my pick up, so I'll just have to return soon! For bulk chi chi dango, Nisshodo sells them in one- or five-pound boxes, $9/lb. One pound of chi chi dango has about 20 individually wrapped pieces, so I needed 4. The attendant came out with my order and I paid via credit card. It wasn't too long ago that they were cash only, so definitely appreciate this upgrade! As we were finishing up the attendant noted, "oh you're the reason there's no chi chi dango today." Again, on a mission #sorrynotsorry! Hawaii Kai ended up being delayed so I made my timeline, yay! The next day after the service, everyone was eating and enjoying among other things the mochi. A lot of my family friends and relatives paid me the ultimate compliment, "your dad would have enjoyed this, especially the mochi!" Mission accomplished! Where I work we love to treat our clients with a box of amazing chi chi dango on Girls Day. It makes such a special-unexpected gift. The staff here are great. SUPER helpful and I have popped in to just grab something for myself and also ordered large orders and every time I am there the staff is very helpful and kind to me. They have a few parking spots in front of their shop. It is not a location where people eat there. Small store you buy your products to take home so parking opens up fast. Looking for a good gift idea to bring back to the mainland? The manju/mochi at Nisshodo will be perfect. The tricky part about getting Japanese dessert is that they don't last very long but the manju and mochi here stay soft for days. Of course, you should try and consume it when you first purchase it but I wouldn't be worried if they sit for a day or two. The mochi here is excellent. It's soft and chewy and the filling is perfect. I tried a bunch of different flavors and they were all fantastic. You can't go wrong with any of them! read more

A friend who lives in Oahu highly recommended this place! She said it's even BETTER than Benkyodo (in San Francisco) and Fugetsu-Do (in Los Angeles). I was very skeptical. After trying the mochi from here, I can see why she said that! The mochi is SO soft. As soon as you take a bite, it will make the mochi lose its form. It's THAT soft. I didn't think anything could be better than the two be best mochi places in California, but this place takes first place in my book. Another benefit of going to this place is that lines are short (maybe because most people don't know about it)? But now you do! Nisshodo also offers a variety of flavors. I got lilikoi (purple), lychee (white), melon (green), coconut (orange) , smooth azuki (pink), green tea (dark green), and daifuku (big one). Could definitely taste the distinct flavors of each. Not too overpowering and not too sweet. Also there's a parking lot! The store front can be hard to find because it doesn't look like a traditional brick and mortar shop. Once you pull into the lot, walk all the way to the right. The store front is in the middle of two ware houses. Once you find the sign (see my photo), enter through the door below the sign and there you have it! The service was fantastic (three workers) and they got through a line of 6 people in front of my group in less than 5 min. The other folks had huge orders too. My 700th review is on Nisshodo Candy Store. They are known for the famous chi-chi-dan-go or plain mochi. They sell $8 per pound. You can get about 6 for a half a pound. That's if I counted correctly. They do sell other mochi with different fillings like Azuki beans, coconut, peanut butter etc. I also saw arare but they're imported. I was hoping that it was made from them. They carry tea cookies as well. The selling part of the store is small. So don't plan on hanging out here. It's a pick up and go kind of place. They do have 2 free parking stalls available right in the front of the store. They're located on Dillingham across from Honolulu Community College in warehouses. If you love fresh mochi, it's worth the visit. In fact, there aren't too many mochi places in Hawaii. I personally appreciate places like this where things are made by hands fresh and daily. read more

Mochi and chichi dango are part of our Japanese traditional holidays. Nisshodo is the go to place and only one of two Mochi places in Honolulu. They do the traditional paper wrap around their chichi dango, that's a must have. Service is great considering it's a small store and the staff is always friendly and accommodating. Walking into the store it's like you walked thru time and nothing seems to have changed accept they accept credit cards. It looks like a old candy store back in the 60. haha so I kept telling my cousins about this place & they were like oh, candy's not really our thing. but when they found out it was a mochi spot, how the tables have turned. this place is hidden in a warehouse - like other yelpers have stated, "LOOK FOR THE GIANT RED RADIO TOWER". this place is also next to a Home Depot + Costco! we waited outside as there were two other people inside the store. it's incredibly small and they get very busy. I called ahead at 7 AM when they first opened so I could get my 3lbs of chi chi dango for my friends and family. my daughter and I ended up picking some mochi while we were there. got one lilikoi which my daughter ate. I had one bite & was surprised she could eat such a sour mochi with no problem. it was good if you're into sour! two melona + two lychee. my favorite by far was the lychee! melona was a nice sweet mochi that would go well with tea IMO. we requested for 6 pieces of chi chi dango unwrapped which they can do as well! our 3 boxes of chi chi dango were all wrapped. the ladies up front were professional & sweet. they are a bit slow, but I can't blame them. *to the people saying the ladies didn't smile at them, no offense, but I don't know any older Asian ladies that just smile at you.* they're making sure they are being gentle with your goods + not swinging it at you. the lady who rang us up even walked out of the counter to hand us our bag of goodies. highly recommend you stop by & try their treats! read more

It's no secret that Nisshodo's chi chi dango reigns supreme. It's a staple at local parties as party favors, and is amazing as a regular snack. Soft, pillowy, and sweet, you can't just stop at one. In operation for over 90 years, the factory is tucked away in the industrial district in Kalihi, and is still family run with other employees on the team running in tandem with them. Parking can be difficult and lines can go up to ~40 people during holidays, even during COVID. Proof- I drove by the store ~0800 on Girl's Day after work, and the demand was through the roof! Phone orders are highly encouraged, but walk-in orders are acceptable as well. On my most recent visit, I got 2 lb of individually wrapped chi chi dango (~$9 a pound) for some hard-working hospital staff, as well as lilikoi and peanut butter mochi ($1.25 a piece). Just like the chi chi dango, the mochi was soft and chewy, but the mochi were nicely filled with the appropriate flavor filling. -1 star for the peanut butter flavor not being as pronounced as another local mochi shop though. This mochi is seriously the best. I'm sorry but this is my favorite mochi on the island, and perhaps the state. Their shop/kitchen is located off of Dilingham Blvd, in the back of the little food strip where Brick Oven Pizza is, but further back. Parking is scarce nearer to the shop so you may want to settle for the first stall you find in that lot. Okay but this mochi is so soft and perfectly flavored. I love every mochi I've tried - the Daifuku, Tsumami, Kinako, Chi chi dango, Habutai - EVERYTHING. It cannot be stressed enough how soft and perfect the texture of the mochi is. Unlike other local mochi places I've tried, it doesn't taste artificial and doesn't have that added artificial-chewiness some others can get. No no no. This mochi is authentic mochi and may be the closest we get to mochi straight from Japan. Prices are good. It can add up when you get a lot of items - BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT. I don't come here often so when I do, I don't mind splurging. This place should be tried by everyone! This makes such a good gift to give people in the outer islands and tourists. This was my first time coming here. I found out about this place from my sister in law. Her co workers brings in all kinds of goodies & if its good she tells me about it & I'll go check it out. LOCATION & PARKING: The location is really complicated to find since it hidden in the back in a warehouse. The parking is limited too. I believe they only have 2 stalls. When I went had no parking so i ended up parking in some other residence parking real fast. The inside is really small but its ok. MOCHI: So I literally came here because my sister inlaw told me about BLUEBERRY MOCHI. I am a sucker for blueberry anything. So it wasnt displayed in the front,you just have to ask them. For the mochi (just mochi, no fillings) its either $.50 cent each or i believe $8 for a pound. When i threw it in my mouth it was so damn good I almost ate the whole pound. We also got stuffed mochis. The LILIKOI let me down, it was a good taste for mochi. We also got MELONA & holy canoly that was so bomb. The Nisshodo "ChiChi Dangos" were soft, pink and white pillows of lightly sweet rice goodness. You're addicted after the first one. You eat a pink one, then you wonder if the white one is just as good and you eat a white one, and then you think the white one is better, so you eat a pink one and say bro the pink one is better, pretty quick you say it is all gone and they're both the same.. no mo' and the box is left empty with nothing but empty wrappers. If I could give Nisshodo 100 stars, I would because they totally deserve it! I discovered this store a few years ago and it is my go to spot for mochi and mochi gifts. Their mochi is made fresh daily and is always such great quality. There is often a line when I stop by but it is so worth the wait! My favorite is their pink & white Chichi Dango - A classic! A pound of Chichi Dango makes the perfect gift as they're individually wrapped and so beautiful (and delicious!) They also have a variety of other mochi with fillings - My favorites are peanut butter, lychee, and coconut. I recently planned a birthday party for my son and with the pandemic, I wanted to do something different other than cake for our guests so I decided to give mochi to each family who celebrated with us. I would usually gift a pound of Chichi Dango to others but I wanted to make a variety box so I called the Shop and the lady who helped me was super friendly, courteous and helpful as she gave me great suggestions so that I could fill the box with a nice variety for our guests - I ended up with 1/4 Kinako, 1/4 Chichi Dango, and 1 each of Lychee, Melon, Lilikoi, Peanut Butter, Habutai, and Tsumami.
