Growing up in Hawaii, mochi was one of my favorite treats. Nisshodo sells my favorite type of mochi, chichi dango. Because they're individually wrapped it's easy to share and a great gift to bring back to the mainland. Even though I can get similar mochi in CA it's not the same. Because the chichi dango is so popular they have 1lb boxes packed and ready to go. You can freeze the mochi (so it lasts longer) and take out one piece at a time (let it thaw to room temperature). I usually buy a few pounds to take home. This trip I purchased: Chichi dango (5/5) individually wrapped, soft, sweet, and a perfect bite of mochi Peanut butter mochi (4/5) crunchy peanut butter filling in a soft mochi exterior Coconut mochi (4/5) sweet, moist, coconut in a soft mochi Lilikoi mochi (2/5) tastes artificial and frankly not my favorite flavor Lychee mochi (4/5) subtle lychee flavored mochi with what looks like white bean paste Kakimochi (5/5) crunchy and flavorful Depending on when you go, service can be nice or rushed. Nisshodo is very popular during the holidays, especially around new year. So plan accordingly. Prices have gone up over the years but that's to be expected. The mochi is still very good for the price. Nisshodo is located in an industrial looking area. It's nothing fancy but it's just how it's been for decades. It just works! Wow, the mochi here is incredible! We were able to try the chi chi dango as well as several flavors of mochi. I won't go into details of each type of mochi as they were all executed well. I think it ends up being your personal preference in terms of what flavors you enjoy. That said, melona was one of our favorites! The chi chi dango and mochis were incredible soft, chewy, and consistent. The flavored mochis were not overpowering, and they did not taste "fake" at all. If you want to try all the different flavors, be sure to go there early. We went around noon, and they were already out of several flavors. Prices are on point and won't break the bank, even if you several different types of mochi. Note the location is a bit odd as it is in the middle of an industrial area with lots of different non-food shops around it. If you feel like you're in the wrong area, chances are you should keep going as you're likely in the right spot. We wish we could have gotten a lot more to bring with us, but the mochi is incredibly fresh and will not keep for very long. read more

After seeing rave reviews of this place, I knew I had to drop by before returning home. It is pretty close to the airport, so I was excited to be able to take an assorted box back home... can't say the mochi truly made it back home because I ended up eating them all at the airport. I asked for one of each - lilikoi, lychee, coconut, peanut butter, melona, green tea, plain mochi, red bean, etc. The peanut butter and the lilikoi are STARS of the show. I also tried their chichi dango, and those were good as well, but I enjoyed their mochi more because of the fillings. Came here, granted a little later in the day for some things to take back to the mainland and for local friends. The space is small and when we looked inside it was crowded so we waited outside until some folks came out. Once inside there was an older lady dead set on not helping us. Think she pegged us for...not sure what. Another lady helped us and even the customer behind us kept saying they're first, but she was determined to limit of purchase by rush offering to the guy behind us, lol. Not sure what it was, but her look right off the bat said she didn't like us to the point she made the customer behind, my husband, me and the person helping us super uncomfortable. She made me so uncomfortable I forgot to put in order for chi chi dango. I'm now hesitant to come by myself even though we like the mochi. My go to spot in oahu for mochi!! Came here on a weekday around 10:00am and there was a couple customers ahead of me. The store is really small and there is not a lot of parking in front. Each store next to it has its own designated parking spaces. The store is in a small little warehouse industry area. I ended up getting 1lb of chichi dango which was individually wrapped mochi in white and pink color. This is around 10-12 pieces I would say? I also got a couple chi chi dang with the tan powder coated on the outside. I forgot what it called but it dosent taste like much. I also got peanut butter, lychee, melona, white bean and Lillkoi mochi which were all really good. I enjoyed the lychee and lilikoi the most but all were so good. Found out about this place through some friend recommendations. It is tucked away in an industrial lot amongst all these other construction companies. It is really inconspicuous, but truly a hidden gem in Honolulu. The mochi offerings include lilikoi, lychee, coconut, peanut butter, red bean, melona, green tea, plain mochi. EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD. Food: Homemade mochi- what can be better than that! This is a very old establishment and my friends who knew I had such a sweet tooth recommended I come and check this place out and I'm so glad I did! I ended up getting a custom pack with various flavors. All of them were delicious- the mochi outer layer was nice and chewy while the fillings were reasonably sweet and not overpowering! Cost: A little expensive but to me this place is a historical boutique of old style goodies which was worth it to experience a taste of how these mochis have been made for years in the past! Environment: The store is very small in the front- one can easily walk by and miss the sign if they were not paying attention and actively looking for it. I know there is a larger room in the back where they make their sweets but the front end was small enough to have just a few people in there at the same time. Service: The mochi were already made and so the service time was fairly quick- I can imagine there being a wait time if the place gets busy as it looks like there is only 1-2 people who are servicing the front. I love Nisshodo's mochi selection! I've had mochi, either packaged at grocery stores, or from other small mochi shops, but a friend told me Nisshodo has THE best mochi on the island. She said this place is comparable to Two Ladies' Kitchen in Hilo! Months after enjoying Two Ladies' Kitchen, I knew I had to try Nisshodo, but I'm hardly in the Kalihi area! Fortunately, I did remember Nisshodo when I was having lunch nearby, and they were still open! I was determined to find the shop, which is behind Hana Tea! I ordered one of the following: daifuku, uguisu, green tea, and less traditional lilikoi, lychee, and melona. Given that I arrived less than an hour before closing, mochi selection was fairly limited, but still good. My husband and I can only finish so much mochi at a time! I loved each of these six mochi varieties. I can't say which one was my favorite. Everything was so tasty! The mochi definitely tasted fresh and didn't have that aftertaste I usually get from store-bought mochi or even mochi from other mom and pop shops. Yes, definitely comparable to Two Ladies' Kitchen, but more traditional! In short, I totally agree with my friend that Nisshodo helps tide over the Two Ladies' Kitchen craving. But when it comes to the more traditional mochi, Nisshodo definitely hits the spot! For those of you on Oahu who love those wacky and modern, but still tasty new mochi flavors, give Nisshodo a try! They may not have strawberry mochi or Oreo mochi, but Nisshodo definitely has fresh, sweet mochi! The mochi sets make great gifts. Getting a mochi craving on Monday. Happy to find Nisshido open and cheerfully serving the public. It can be a little challenging finding this store and then parking as it is tucked away in the back of a warehouse area. Front door almost blends in with the wall. Still, you will be happy you did! Like that this store sells smaller portioned mochi at half the price. Yes, the size is about only 1/3 the size of competitors still, a perfect taste. Ratio of mochi to filling good. On this occasion I picked up: Coconut (pink) - standard yet tasty Lychee (white) - flavorful but where's the fruit? Appears to be white an with just a bit of juice infused Lilikoi (purple) - bursting with flavor. Melon (bright green) - my favorite Green tea (pale green) - least favorite Manju - traditional soft outside, almost gummy Was a little disappointed no fresh fruit, just flavor infused mochi. Who in their right mind would ever turn down fresh mochi and manju?! Not I! Although this would be my first meal of the day, I fully embraced my mochi/manju experience. Cue Nisshodo Candy Store. My party and I arrived at this small, Japanese confection store with 1 viewing case filled with mochi and manju. I was hoping to arrive there closer to the opening time (0700) so we would have first pick, but we didn't arrive there till 10 something. You would think that arriving a few hours after opening was not big deal, BUT we noticed there were already some empty spots & turned over placards in the viewing case. I thought to myself which sweet treats did I miss?? Nevertheless, there were still many options to choose from. We selected every mochi and manju option available except 2 mochis that had the same fillings as the others we had already selected. There were some interesting flavors available, such as lilikoi, lychee, melona, and even peanut butter! We ended up spending $35.50. Excessive? Definitely yes. Regretful? Not one bit lol! We enjoyed every soft, delicate, pillowy morsel! Winner of Favorite Flavor: Peanut Butter mochi! Say what?! I would've never guessed peanut butter would go well with mochi, but it does! A must try for those who love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! 2nd Runner Up: Lychee mochi! But really, what doesn't go well with lychee lol. There is parking right in front of the store, but it's very limited. It would be better if you came with a companion so they can stand in line while you find parking. There were a few parties ahead of us when we arrived, but the line moved quickly. They also limit how many people are in the store at the same time. Or you could call ahead of time to place an order to ensure you receive exactly what you're craving for. This is my favorite little Mochis shop! They have super reasonable prices and honestly the best chi chi dango. I loveeeee their blueberry chi chi dango & my husband loves their original. In our most recent visit we bought 10 custom 1lb boxes of chi chi dango - half blueberry & half pink & white original for $11 each. I believe the original pink and white chi chi dango is $10 and the blueberry (or any other flavored chi chi dango) is $12. The kinako chi chi is really good too! We've tried other Mochi or manju from the display case, but we always come back and load up for their chi chi dango. We share and bring back for all of our family and friends! Economy, Covid, economy, dang blasted work on Dillingham! I remember when chi chi dango was $6/lb for several years. I bought the variety pack in October 2023 for my brother's gf. It was $12. Today, March 21, 2024, 5 months later, it cost $16. That's a big jump! Oh well, it's my treat yourself week. The taste is still good. I just wish prices would not go up so quickly. I was told to get these "mochi bites" from this place...first, I would like to apologize because I forgot what they're actually called, but let me just say that these things are addicting!!! The place is a little hard to find at first if you're used to looking for a store front because the area looks more like garages and car repair shops...but it's actually also easy to find if you just follow the people walking towards the store. Parking is a little scarce, and I ended up parking by the restaurants closer to the main road and walking. The Mochi stuff are awesome though. They don't disappoint. Not much to add to the other reviews, but yes, it's located in an industrial and unexpected area! My husband had to drop me off and circle because he couldn't find a parking spot. It's a small shop but inside they have a wonderful selection of freshly made manju. The mochi was super soft and fresh, probably one the softest I've had! The chichi dangos had a kinako coating so my husband didn't like that as much. I thought the filled mochis were really good and I liked how the coconut filling wasn't overly sweet. I have lived on Oahu my entire life (30+ years) and it was only until this past Friday (when I was craving some mochi and was in the neighborhood for lunch) that I actually visited Nisshodo; up until now, I only ate Nisshodo mochi when someone brought it to the office or gave it to me. A hidden gem located along Dillingham Blvd in Kalihi, you aren't able to see the store entrance from the main road; you have to turn into the parking lot, drive to the back, look to your left and you should see the doorway to mochi heaven. Keep in mind there are limited parking stalls for Nisshodo so while you're looking for the store front, keep your eyes peeled for an open parking space. Nisshodo sells a variety of Japanese sweets including puff rice, senbei, and, of course, mochi; the mochi is what they are famous for. They sell mochi that has different flavors and fillings, but, in my humble opinion, nothing beats the local favorite, chichi dango. What makes Nisshodo's the best? Their chichi dango is soft and smooth, but still has a good chewy, elastic texture. Their chichi dango is a mix of white and pink colored mochi that is individually wrapped in branded paper. Is there a difference in flavor between the two colors? I can't tell, but that just could be because I quickly devour the pieces I can get my hands on. Another favorite of mine is the peanut butter filled mochi. They use crunchy peanut butter for the filling so the crunch from the filling is a perfect contrast to the soft and chewy texture of the mochi that wraps around it. If you're not allergic to peanuts and want to try something different from the tried-and-true chichi dango, I highly recommend the peanut butter mochi. read more

I'll admit that I was skeptical when someone said the mochi here was better than Fugetsu-Do in dtla. Stopped by on our second to last day to sample and decide whether we'd bring some back home. Took a bit of an effort in finding as the shop is located pretty deep inside. Ordered an assortment of mochis to try which included a variety of azuki beans, lilikoi, coconut, peanut butter, lychee and melon. Out of the ones we sampled, we loved the melon, coconut and lilikoi. Ran back in after and placed an order for pickup the next day. The mochis did travel fairly well and texture was ok a few days later. You will notice a change to the texture as they get older and probably should be consumed quickly. I'll agree that the mochis here have an excellent texture and may even be better than what we've had even in Japan. Will be coming back and purchasing these mochis as gifts from now on. All the flavors! So delicious! This mochi store had all kinds of different mochi as well as chi chi dango. I got the package with all of the flavors, and it was definitely worth it! The lady in the store said that the mochi would last 1-2 days at room temperature, but they lasted about a week in the fridge. The mochi was so soft and chewy, and the flavors were absolutely delicious! The lilikoi one was my favorite, but the lychee and melona ones were great. I grew up on Nisshodo. Love the freshness and price of these delicate sweet pillows of deliciousness. Other places are double or triple the price, but Nisshodo has managed to keep their products affordable. Their new sampler pack is a stroke of genius. I have been behind tourists before trying to figure out what to get. Now you can pick a pack with one of every mochi and some chichidango and be done. The presentation is so awesome and colorful. Unfortunately, they close an hour earlier than pre-pandemic at 2 pm instead of 3 pm. A small shop with good mochi! Came with a friend on weekend, and there was a line out the door because the shop is pretty small. After we got in, they took our order quickly and packaged our mochi efficiently. We tried the peanut butter, lychee, melona, and lilikoi flavors.
