    Gin And Spaghetti

Classic Italian restaurants are getting harder to find like this one in downtown Highwood. It's been around for many years and probably doesn't look much different than it was back then. Nite N Gale has pretty much the type of drinks and food you expect: spaghetti and whatever. Good for a nice time out together, or out with the family. The prices have gotten higher, but the atmosphere and the quality of food is good so it's reasonable. After thinking about going somewhere for dinner, we chose here. It's located in downtown where there's a lot of newer places around it. This place may look kind of dumpy from the outside, but it's a lot better inside though. Looks old but it's clean. We got seats at the bar and the bartender got us drinks first. It's about $9 for the cheapest cocktail. Kind of expensive but these were pretty strong. Food wasn't incredible but it was good. It's $18 for spaghetti. Again, it was kind of expensive. The portions weren't bad at least. Good place for a good night out even though it's not cheap or as good as many people have remembered it. It was actually pretty okay coming for the first time. The menu has few options besides the salad and spaghetti for vegetarians.

The ribs were incredible - as were the twice baked potatoes. I think the skirt steak was a little underdone for my wife's liking but our son ended up loving it so overall our time was great. Our server was super attentive and kind and the atmosphere of Nite N' Gale was exactly what we were hoping for: chill, old-school steakhouse vibes.

Over 50 years we've been coming here. Great times! Great ribs and everything else!

The review may be a bit skewed since for me it's a fifty-year favorite of mine. Dad was bringing me here in the 70's and I've always ordered the ribs with the homemade bbq sauce. The only thing that's changed is they used to offer sourdough rolls on the table and have tried a few different breads since that. Please go back to the sourdough. Ribs are outstanding! So is the shrimp shrimp DeJonghe! And you can add anchovies to the side sale which offer all homemade dressings.

    Ribs

Great ribs and amazing service! Get a lot of bang for your buck here. Love how all of the entrees come with a soup or salad and a side! $30 for a full slab of ribs is a great deal.

    Grilled Calamari was excellent!

They are closing, so reviews are pretty meaningless. No gf options, but what I did have was delicious. Whitefish.

Most of the food was overcooked and dry - shrimp, ribs. Not what we remember. And oysters were served warm-ish not chilled.

He did find a table and during the course of our meal there were non-stop arrivals with a few heading straight to the small bar so I'm thinking perhaps it has a strong flow of regular customers. The service was efficient and the dining room has a cozy bistro feel to it. The menu is seasonal. Nothing was calling out to me so I went with the burger and fries. Both were good. We arrived very early at a random time, probably right after opening. Everyone was so nice and service was great. The table started with the cornbread, moist and warm. Not as sweet as I personally like (I can't help it I'm southern) but delicious nonetheless. The eggplant hummus wasn't that great to me, loved the bread it came with but I think I would prefer typical chickpea hummus instead. Brussels were so good, probably the favorite thing I tried. For my entree I had a kale salad with added salmon. I liked the crunch and the light vinaigrette. My husband had the seafood risotto which was slightly undercooked. All and all a positive experience and I'd definitely go back if I was in the area.

I don't get why people treat this restaurant like it's some pinnacle of restaurant-ship (not a word…read morebut go with it pls). It's always seemed to me like average food for high prices that they know people here will pay. We went here with out-of-towners, including kids, and it was impossible to get our order taken for a while, maybe 20 minutes. Most restaurants prioritize getting kids fed earlier than adults, since they go to bed earlier. There was no sense of urgency here. Our waiter forgot our drinks and was nice but barely came over to see if we needed anything. Also, it is VERY LOUD. Prepare to ask "what??" over and over, or whatever your version of that is (pardon, say that again, etc.!). People at our table wanted chips with guacamole and salsa. The guacamole fit into a small salad dressing container (the tiny cups). This was barely a sharing amount, but we all got our thimble-ful. The server or kitchen messed up someone else's burger order, so she had to wait a while while everyone else ate. My salad was absolutely fine. It wasn't worth $20. Nothing in it was very interesting. The lettuce was fresh but poorly drained, so I got to have a watery mix of things with dressing. The dressing came in a small takeout container. This isn't fast food, and my badly drained, boring salad was $20. Give me a real dish :P

When you pull up to the plaza you would think anything of the restaurant but when you go inside it's a fun colorful experience. When we were seated we were brought waters and menus. We took some time to look at the menus but ultimately took our server's suggestions on drinks. I ended up having a virgin Rose Colored Glasses drink and absolutely loved it. The drinks were large and I felt they were worth the price. My husband got an old fashioned. To start we got the cheese curds, and when I tell you these cheese curds still live rent free in my mind I kid you not. They were so good, the cheese was battered in a tempura batter with a truffle cream sauce and it made for such an incredible dish! For our entrees we got the pork chop with the brown butter sauces and bavette with a red wine reduction. The pork chop was great with the brown butter you just gotta make sure you mix it up, and the red wine was a bit too salty for me but it was okay because I ended up loving the steak by itself! For our sides we got the grilled zucchini under the snacks option instead of the sides option because I wanted all the fixings. It was a great choice! The fixings really made and I could eat a plate of that and just be happy (with the cheese curds of course). The wiped potatoes were great as well. Now I was going to pass on dessert because I was SO full already, but twist my arm when you tell me the cookie dough ice cream is a must try. It had real cookie dough chunks on top and bottle and the vanilla ice cream was not boring vanilla, I ate almost half of that bowl and couldn't stop. The chocolate chip cookie dough was house made and it was the perfect blend of sweet and salty that tied the whole ice cream bowl together. Can't recommend that enough as well. All in all, we had a great experience! It was so fun to see so many regulars and so many new folks who came in to dine at the same time as us and we all peeked to see who ordered what before we ordered and got some great recs as you can see! Can't wait to come back to enjoy my favorites and more!

Started with the bread and crabcakes and the bread was amazing and definitely fresh but the crabcakes needed more crab and flavor. Basically everything needed more flavor. We also ordered a bottle of wine which our server struggled with and never came over to refill the glasses. Then the entree's; my husband's bolognese was bland and desperately needed at least salt and pepper. Then the real problem was my steak which was supposed to be medium came out well done and then classically when it was recooked came out rare or medium rare if you are being generous. Then the waitress said she would check back and she didn't so I had to get salt myself from the server station which is kinda ridiculous especially when paying $54 for a steak that already has no seasoning which is why they offer free sauces which makes a lot of sense now. When she finally did come back I said it was under but not waiting for it to be overcooked again so reheating it at home with the cold side of mushrooms I ordered WITH my steak. I did talk to the manager after and he was not really helpful or sympathetic and I was really talking to him so in my review I could say well at least management cares but that is not the case here. I gave 2 stars because their drinks are good and the ambiance is nice and the hostess was super friendly and was the star employee after our visit. Also we paid for everything even the cold mushrooms and over/under cooked steak! At minimum also remake my mushrooms or comp them. Would I eat here again hopefully not but it is locationally desirable for me and my in-laws and have lots of GF options so might have to and if I do hopefully they will have made things better.

We were able to get last minute reservations for 8:30 on a Friday, which was surprising given how extremely busy this place is on the weekends. We arrived on time and were seated quickly without a wait, which was another impressive moment given how packed the restaurant was. Dining here is like dining in the city on the weekends, with a majority of the crowd tending toward older groups of friends or families without children. There was one family of four who brought their child with them, but generally we saw couples and groups of friends. Dress seems standardly smart casual. Food: The menu here is organized into three sections: small plates, mid-size meals, and entree-sized portions. Keep in mind the mid-sized plates can be on the larger side, so the tapas-style menu can be deceiving. We ordered the steak and frites and branzino as our mains, with polenta fries on the side. For apps, we ordered the butternut squash ravioli and were greeted with complimentary cheesy biscuits to start. We finished our meal with the olive oil cake, covered in raspberries. Based on what we ordered, we'd give this place a 4/5, simply because the steak my husband ordered was a tiny bit tough and overcooked (ordered medium rare, received medium well). The cut was a strip or a ribeye, so unfortunately on the tougher side, and less flavorful. My fish was nicely seared but the cannellini beans that were paired with the branzino just didn't do it for me. Branzino is a white fish that tolerates spice and garnishes very well, so it could have benefited from some more complex flavors. That said, we will be back for the ravioli. I'd wager that it is the best thing on the winter menu (this place rotates menu selections somewhat frequently). It was creamy, complex, and soft, with a delicious umami sauce. The olive oil cake we shared for dessert was also very delicious, moist and well-paired with simple cream and berries. Nice and simple but did the trick without being overwhelming or cloyingly sweet. The biscuits are also a nice touch: soft and buttery, not dry, and baked fresh. Overall, I'd say that veggie and pasta dishes are the way to go here, and potentially the fish if it is paired with a more complex side in the future. We look forward to future menus!
