    Cone of Sweetest Taboo

Speaking of nostalgia, I thought of the scene in the movie Pulp Fiction where John Travolta asks Uma Thurman, 'DId you just order at $12 Milkshake??' at a 50's themed diner! He marveled that is a milkshake just ice cream and milk?? There is WAAAY more happening here! The cones themselves are $12, the milkshakes are $14, but they are hand made to order. It's not just scooping ice cream and putting it in a mixer. They use some kind of device that freezes the ingredients on the spot. One can choose Vegan or 'regular', ice cream, along with flavors and toppings. There are specific combos or you can choose your own combo. The names are the nostalgic part, with references to popular music from the 70s and 80s. (Never mind how many references I got!) If you are not familiar with singer Sade and Sweetest Taboo, you can instantly look for it via Google or Pandora or something and find out why a flavor is named after this amazing song. I got the Copa Cabana (Barry Manilow's song) with key lime flavor, coconut shavings, and graham cracker bits. My party got the Sweetest Taboo. We browsed the shop while we waited. Its not like Baskin Robbins or Kilwins where you can see the ice cream, but it's still a good experience. I liked the tables, tv, and games, (the oversized 'Uno' cards were so funny) but I have to say the 'Holiday' trees in July were rather confusing. Are they meant to provide all-year-round cheer, or just holdovers from last year? We intended to eat while walking so we did not play any games. Since I asked for Vegan the consistency was cold and frozen but not 'creamy' but I'm ok with that. The flavors were very good, and the portion size was fine. I also got a beef empanada to go. A rather odd combo for an 'ice cream shop' but I get we do not live by sugar alone! I enjoyed it later, it was flaky and filled with good meat flavors. Next time I go I'll get the ALCOHOL option (did I forget to mention that?) and maybe relax over a game, but it'll have to be a payday week!

The place is really cute with plenty of seats and a variety of card and board games to play while you wait for your ice cream. The customer service was excellent, everyone was nice and their suggestions were on point. I went with their vegan option (vanilla base with brown sugar, salted caramel drizzle and pecans) my daughter had their dairy option (strawberry ice cream with pound cake and graham cracker crumbles). It took about 10 minutes for them to create these delicious treats. We will return!

Our friends took us here while we were visiting them in Chicago. It was a great idea after dinner to kill some time before our evening plans. Super cute decor & deliciously warm inviting smells upon entrance. Owner was taking orders & was very friendly. He answered questions & gave feedback. I went with a menu item, Sweetest Taboo. My husband & one of our friends opted for non-dairy options. While we waited we accessed a board game & sat at a table. Great idea for board games to just interact & hangout! More spots like this are needed. Music was also playing, so overall vibe was chill & easy. Decorated trees were a neat addition. I absolutely loved my ice cream! Prices are not cheap, but worth the experience. I wouldn't spend that much on Ice cream normally, but when in Chicago...turn up!

I wanted to like this place but there's several factors that have me rating it as I did. The ice cream took about a half hour, I paid $50 for 3 items & the ice cream had the consistency of ice. The flavors were also sort of muted imho. I could definitely taste the honey bourbon but as far as the actual ice cream components go I couldn't honestly say this is a must for anyone. Twas only my 2nd experience with boozy ice cream but now I think that ship has sailed.

I was walking around the area with an hour to kill, and I'm glad I stumbled upon this place! The interior is a vibrant collection of pastel shades which imbues the space with a fun energy. Every ice cream is made to order with a liquid nitrogen infusion. Staff was very pleasant and willing to answer questions. I enjoyed a peach cobbler milkshake - creamy, spiced and delicious

The decor is classic and cozy, and the coffee is genuinely excellent. I also love doing work here with their community tables. I usually don't like my lattes too sweet, but they nail the balance and flavor combinations every time. It is a bit sweet overall, but I'm not bothered by it? They really balance the flavor combinations really well, especially with the ghostly trio! Despite how busy it gets, the service is surprisingly quick, and somehow every drink still comes out consistently great. I honestly don't know how they manage it.

Too Good To Go is a program that allows businesses to sell left over food at the end of the day on discount, avoiding food waste. For lunch I had an Americano, the vegetarian egg sandwich and a Margherita Bistro, which is like a cross between a margherita pizza slice but in a latticed pastry. Both the Americano and egg sandwich were actually excellent, while the Margherita Bistro was less noteworthy but fine. Actually when I looked up Margherita Bistro, wanting to learn if it's a common thing and it turns out that it's made by a food service company (Bridor, owned by French Groupe Leduff which supplies baked goods to cafés all over Europe). I got two cake slices later in my Too Good To Go order. The strawberry cheesecake (Monteressa cheese cake, made with marscapone, ricotta and fresh strawberries) was delicious while the carrot cake was not as good but still fine. It turns out that the Monteressa cheesecake is made by another big supply company (Bindi) that supplies Italian desserts. Coffee appears to be from Illy. I'd definitely recommend Café Crèmerie for their good coffee, excellent egg sandwich, and nice atmosphere. I'm also giving Café Crèmerie 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: * First I'll get into the mediocre aspects and then some positive points. * Coffee is from Illy, which I would say is slightly better than average for a major coffee company. It's a certified B Corporation but it not known for organic or fair trade coffee (they do a kind of direct trade). * Many of the pastries are mass-produced by companies that supply European or European-style cafes. Like Illy, these suppliers are perhaps slightly better than average: Bridor mentions using cage-free eggs while Bindi uses renewable energy. * A lot of the menu is suitable for vegetarians and I appreciate that there's no sign of beef on the menu (the single food product that drives around 10% of climate change). Would be nice to see more vegan options. * Café Crèmerie does a nice job at avoiding waste generation. Ceramic cups are available for coffee and food is served on trays with a paper liner. * I also appreciate that Café Crèmerie takes part in the Too Good To Go program, avoiding food waste.
