Love that there is a ice cream hangout spot in Bronzeville! I appreciate that they have a variety of ice cream bases to work from: dairy, vegan (coconut) and sorbet. I got the cookies & dream ice cream, which was ok - I couldn't pinpoint what was overpowering the ingredients, but it was unfortunately prominent and lingering. Minus the ice cream, I'm primarily giving this a 3 because of the clean, beautiful space (TVs, games, group and lounge seating abound) and the empanadas. My birria one was phenomenal, and my husband's spinach one was really good. They alone are worth coming back for. Meh. I stopped in because I wanted to support a local business but left feeling shafted. The product provided wasn't worth the price in my opinion. I ordered the strawberry letter 43 which was supposed to consist of strawberry ice cream, graham crackers, and pound cake. I wanted vanilla ice cream instead, which they swapped out without a problem. The ice cream didn't have much flavor and was much too sweet. There weren't any graham crackers either. They sprinkle the dust from the graham crackers on top of the ice cream. You're not actually being served graham crackers, which is false advertising. Lastly, the pound cake was dry and hard. It was so hard that it was flaky rather than being moist. It's doubtful that it was homemade either. It's more likely that it came out of a plastic, single-serve container. I took four bites before tossing it all in the trash. My sister had the mango and key lime sorbet on a waffle cone. She opted to skip the toppings. She liked the sorbet but not enough to be a repeat customer. She said the waffle cone was too thin. It broke into several pieces when she lifted it out of the plastic cup to rotate it. The inside of the ice cream shop is cute. There's a large flat-screen TV and there were games on some of the tables. They were playing 90s pop hits on the sound system which added to the vibe. The space is comfortable, and it's clear that someone paid attention to the details, but the product they're serving is lackluster. You're better off going to Baskin Robbins, where you can get two double scoops for twelve dollars. It's a national chain but you're getting a better value for your money. We paid $21 for two single scoops, which for us ended up being a waste of money. Nitro was definitely a one and done experience. I'll stick with Sugar Shack, Kilwins, or Runaway Cow. read more

This is a funky ice cream shop in Bronzeville that I enjoyed. I stopped in after work and grabbed the Happy Feelin' which had apples, walnuts and a Carmel drizzle and my fiancé had Brownie Nights with brownie pieces, chocolate chips and drizzle. The base ice cream is creamy but still light which is great for so it doesn't feel heavy in my stomach. You can choose from a dairy or vegan base. The space is bright and colorful. There is table seating, couches and comfy chairs. We took advantage of the games while waiting for our ice cream and played Simon! There are children's books and coloring books as well. The two TV's played Peppa Pig and Gladiator. I would definitely recommend this place. It's a great spot for a game night with friends or for kids. read more

Speaking of nostalgia, I thought of the scene in the movie Pulp Fiction where John Travolta asks Uma Thurman, 'DId you just order at $12 Milkshake??' at a 50's themed diner! He marveled that is a milkshake just ice cream and milk?? There is WAAAY more happening here! The cones themselves are $12, the milkshakes are $14, but they are hand made to order. It's not just scooping ice cream and putting it in a mixer. They use some kind of device that freezes the ingredients on the spot. One can choose Vegan or 'regular', ice cream, along with flavors and toppings. There are specific combos or you can choose your own combo. The names are the nostalgic part, with references to popular music from the 70s and 80s. (Never mind how many references I got!) If you are not familiar with singer Sade and Sweetest Taboo, you can instantly look for it via Google or Pandora or something and find out why a flavor is named after this amazing song. I got the Copa Cabana (Barry Manilow's song) with key lime flavor, coconut shavings, and graham cracker bits. My party got the Sweetest Taboo. We browsed the shop while we waited. Its not like Baskin Robbins or Kilwins where you can see the ice cream, but it's still a good experience. I liked the tables, tv, and games, (the oversized 'Uno' cards were so funny) but I have to say the 'Holiday' trees in July were rather confusing. Are they meant to provide all-year-round cheer, or just holdovers from last year? We intended to eat while walking so we did not play any games. Since I asked for Vegan the consistency was cold and frozen but not 'creamy' but I'm ok with that. The flavors were very good, and the portion size was fine. I also got a beef empanada to go. A rather odd combo for an 'ice cream shop' but I get we do not live by sugar alone! I enjoyed it later, it was flaky and filled with good meat flavors. Next time I go I'll get the ALCOHOL option (did I forget to mention that?) and maybe relax over a game, but it'll have to be a payday week! read more

The place is really cute with plenty of seats and a variety of card and board games to play while you wait for your ice cream. The customer service was excellent, everyone was nice and their suggestions were on point. I went with their vegan option (vanilla base with brown sugar, salted caramel drizzle and pecans) my daughter had their dairy option (strawberry ice cream with pound cake and graham cracker crumbles). It took about 10 minutes for them to create these delicious treats. We will return! read more

Black owned, family owned on the Southside of Chicago! What more do I need to say?! If I must say more, I will there is so much to say about Nitro Nostalgia! To start, it is a board game cafe, so they have an assortment of games, so so many seats and is absolutely family friendly. It's family owned, I was able to meet the father and daughter who were truly the sweetest and by the time you leave, you'll feel like family too! Now on to the 'SWEET' part. The ice cream here is impeccable, that Banana Pudding Biscoff Ice Cream?! My absolute favorite, I could do that by the pint in one sitting. The cool part is they use liquid nitrogen in their ice cream which cuts down preparation time without sacrificing the taste. I wanted to like this place but there's several factors that have me rating it as I did. The ice cream took about a half hour, I paid $50 for 3 items & the ice cream had the consistency of ice. The flavors were also sort of muted imho. I could definitely taste the honey bourbon but as far as the actual ice cream components go I couldn't honestly say this is a must for anyone.
