Had an incredible dinner at Nocello! The food and wine was amazing and reasonably priced. I especially loved the dessert and the pesto. The service was fantastic, they even gave out free limoncello shots when you were done with your order. The space was dimly lit but the menus lit up so you could still see. Delicious Northern Italian food. Excellent value, generous portions. They provide fresh, homemade, rustic Italian bread for the table. The lobster tails and scampi fettuccine in a delicate vodka sauce was perfectly prepared. The house made raviolis with ricotta and spinach, with a fresh, delicate tomato sauce was also delicious. We had a Cesear salad and endive salad with pears and Gorgonzola, and both were delicious. The best dessert was their Italian ricotta cheescake. Yum! We went twice during our 2 weeks in NYC. Also service was attentive and considerate of theater timing. The atmosphere was old New York, white table cloth dining. The only downside was recorded pop music that felt out of place with atmosphere. Highly recommended! read more

We came here on a whim. I hopped on Resy and it was one of the few places that could accommodate us (a group of 8). It was the perfect little cozy Italian restaurant tucked in with great food. I would have loved for them to have some of the comfort food items like manicotti or lasagna, but their pasta was all great none theless. If I could give 0 stars I would. I have never been treated so poorly and have never been so embarrassed when for a dinner party I planned in my life. Our industry trade show was this past weekend and my manager asked me to plan our team dinner for Thursday evening. There were 13 of us and it happened to be my manager's 50th birthday so we decided we would celebrate her that evening as well. I chose Nocello because it was a 2 minute walk from our hotel and had great reviews. I emailed the restaurant to make our reservation & inquired about a cake. Constantino emailed me back, suggested either a chocolate cake or pistachio cake. I chose the pistachio, requested a separate check so my coworkers and I could split the cost of the cake. Four of us, including my manager arrived 10 minutes early and were treated quite poorly by a woman (possibly owner?) She seemed very annoyed we were early and rudely asked us to come back @ 7:30. We returned at 7:28, she still had an attitude and asked us to sit at table in front window. The rest of our party arrived and they finally seated us. It didn't get any better from here; service was very slow getting drinks out, I was told by (possibly the owner, Constantino?) that they didn't have a pistachio cake for me - it comes from Italy???????? They only had 1 piece for my manager if I wanted. One of the servers spilt the white wine sauce from my plate while serving my dinner down my left side on a brand new outfit and barely apologized!!! They put the birthday candles in a beautiful fruit tart to sing happy birthday to my manager but did not serve the tart to us. They gave my manager a piece of pistachio cake and took dessert orders from everyone else. Absolutely horrible experience!!!! read more

Wow. Just wow. This restaurant isn't just "good for the theater district" food. This is some of the most delicious pasta in Manhattan. It's unassuming and wonderful. First off, I'm a complete sucker for complementary bread, which they deliver fresh and warm with classic Italian olive oil. The gnocchi melted in my mouth like ice cream on a hot summers day. The pesto sauce was creamy yet light - a feat of culinary science. The same could be said about the vodka sauce that covered the delicious tortellini. I would bathe in that sauce if they sold it at bed bath and beyond. Great for a date, a pre-show dinner, and for any carboholics. read more

I've been to this restaurant many times. The restaurant has great ambiance, a large selection of primi and secondi entrees, appetizers and desert selections. Their pastas, which each of the five of us ordered were excellent. On Saturday night, service was erratic unlike other times. Our server was a bit curt, slammed bread down on our table. One of our diners had to ask for butter multiple times. The staff was either short-handed, harried or both. Worst yet, for a mid-upper range restaurant, they presented us with a HANDWRITTEN bill. The restaurant does not issue separate checks, okay if a printed bill is presented and we can use phone apps to split the bill. With a handwritten bill, this is impossible. The problems I identified above are what led me to downgrade my rating from a 5 to 4. Hopefully the restaurant takes these comments to heart and restore their service to the "5" I'm usually accustomed to. Their prices are moderate for Midtown Manhattan and the cuisine is excellent. read more

Thanks to Yelp we found this wonderful Italian Restaurant and used the Yelp reservations system. It was 7:15 pm and were able to book dinner for two at 7:45. Nocello was just a 5 minute walk away from our hotel and at first glance looked like a small hole in the wall. A walk down a 5-step flight of stairs revealed a dark but spacious dining area. We were seated right away by gentleman who seemed to be the owner. He took our drink orders and asked if we wanted sparkling water as well. Immediately comes a bottle of S. Pellegrino, and a short while later my draft Peroni. By the way, the backlit menus were a nice touch in the dark but, clean and nicely decorated dining area. Our waiter took our orders: Fresh corn and vegetable soup for me and minestrone for my wife. For our main courses, my wife ordered Scampi Alla Nonna and I, one if the specials of the day: ricotta raviolli with rich meat gravy. A basket of crusty Italian bread soon arrived along with olive oil with semi-ripe olives. Mmm, nothing like nice olive oil with a little salt on crusty bread. Our soups soon arrived piping hot - perfect for this wet April evening. In to the main courses. My ravioli was perfect: Nice tender spinach pockets with the aforementioned rich meat sauce. Best I've had. My wife's scampi were perfectly grilled served in a butter-wine sauce on perfectly aldente pasta. Servings were generous but not so huge that we couldn't handle dessert. We opted to share one if their signatures, Nocellino: Cold zablagione with berries. The perfect cap to a perfect meal. Wait staff were nice Italian gentlemen who were efficient and knew the menu. Not a good choice for anniversary or any other celebratory evening out. Photos make this place look fancier than it is. Small things give away the pig with lipstick imitation like the "somewhat grumpy/not too happy top be there" waiter and wine served in non wine glasses (any person who knows even a bit about wine will understand ... small glass filled to 90% with wine). Food that people on Yelp recommend is not available on the Friday night when we are there. For someone celebrating an anniversary it would be great to get some sort of a desert with "Happy anniversary" on it, instead owner/manager who seems like a nice guy brings you a shot of Sangria on the house. I paid $23 for Lamb Ragu Pappardelle and received a VERY modest amount of it. Additionally, the included sides were a small cup of olives (disgusting) and, outrageously, a plastic-wrapped ass slice of a factory-processed sandwich bread loaf. I don't remember "ass slice of Wonderbread loaf" being part of an expensive Italian restaurant meal. In the mood for Italian food? Keep looking. I was taken right back to Italy when I walked through the doors of Nocello and was greeted with buona sera. Nocello is quiet, intimate and romantic. The Italian gentleman and woman who seem to be owners or oversee everything we're so sweet and friendly. Our server didn't greet us with his name and he was hard to engage, but the other staff was engaging and friendly as they delivered food, cleared dishes and filled our wine & water glasses. My husband and I shared a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino, my favorite wine. He started with the caprese salad, which was sweet fresh tomatoes with mozzarella, roasted red peppers, basil with a drizzling of balsamic vinegar. I had the melon & prosciutto, which was ripe and sweet honeydew melon with thin slices of salty prosciutto. For dinner I had the baked clams oreganata appetizer, which were six little neck clams with a coating of breadcrumbs and seasoning. My husband had the vitello martini, veal encrusted in parmigiano cheese, sautéed with white wine & lemon. The veal was so tender. We also ordered a side of garlic bread which was amazing!. I just loved thick slices of crusty bread coated with lots of garlic and herbs. We shared a slice of pistachio cake serve with ice cream & whipped cream. Sweet & tasty. My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner, so delicious. At the end of the meal, the lady came by with complimentary shots of nocello, which is a walnut liquor. Such a nice touch! I wish I lived in NYC or had a few more days in town because I would revisit this restaurant. It's that good. Don't miss Nocello, it's a hidden gem in New York City. read more

The best place in NYC that you're not eating at. We walked in off the street on a whim, and we were promptly greeted and sat. This is was the best meal/dining experience my husband and I had while visiting New York. We ordered the octopus special app, the lobster fettuccine special and the ravioli special. Plus, we got dessert. It was all fantastic! Most of the area is just fake touristy bs. Nocello is filled with an all star service staff that aim to provide a great experience. Came here for an industry dinner on a Saturday night. We started off family style for the apps: caprese salad, crab cakes and prosciutto with melon. The caprese salad had chopped red onion on it, which I thought was a bit harsh and took away from the sweet tomato and mozzarella. The crab cakes were a tad bit too fishy. The best of the three was the simplest one: the prosciutto and melon. Can't go wrong with sweet and salty goodness. For my entree, I ordered one of the specials of the day: lamb chops with parmesan crust. I don't think I've ever had lamb chops cooked this way. Tender, flavorful and crispy. The portion (5 chops) was good sized too! We finished with tiramisu and cannoli. The cannoli must be filled to order. The shell was extra crispy and the filling was perfect. The tiramisu was good too, but the cannoli took the cake. The service was not very good. I don't know if our server was afraid he was interrupting the conversation or we needed some more time, but one of us had to go grab him a couple times for various requests. read more

This was a pleasant restaurant for dinner and catching up with a friend. I was seeing a show around the corner at Studio 54 and the location here was ideal for a dinner before the show. My food and drink were delicious. It had been raining, and the server kindly stored our umbrellas for us in bags so the water wouldn't get everywhere. The only downside is that they forgot all about our coffees and we had to get moving to go our own ways after dinner, so we didn't get to enjoy coffee there. read more

My friends and I were at City Center for a matinee today. I read previous reviews of Nocella and thought it sounded like a good choice. It's location is very convenient. One of my friends has walker so when we approached the entrance, we saw that there were three steps down to the restaurant. We received minimal assistance from the management to enter. Although, they did provide us with a table close to the door. While the food was mediocre, the service was also minimal. The server only responded when we made attempts to contact him. He or any other restaurant personnel never asked if all was to our liking. Likewise, no "Thank you " was given or assistance provided, as we struggled to climb the stairs upon leaving. Stopped in yesterday for my 530 reservation after seeing a 2 o'clock show. Although I had a reservation, we were seated in a room all the way in the back adjacent to where they store their bicycles. I asked for a different table being that the restaurant was empty and was told that the other table were taken because of reservations. I said I have a reservation, but the person seating me said everybody has a reservation and eventually made a concession and let me sit towards the front of the restaurant. It was a parent from the beginning that their goal was to turn the table over within seconds they were ready to take my order. we ordered appetizers and a dinner and the appetizers came right away with no space out for the dinner which came three minutes later. While we were eating, they kept taking plates off of our table. At no time did anybody smile ask me how my food was. It was an abundantly clear that their goal was to get me out of the restaurant as quickly as possible, as soon as I finished my last bite, they took my plate away and I had my check. The whole dining experience took less than an hour maybe 45 minutes. I've been to this restaurant before, but was terribly disappointed at their lack of hospitality. Delicious and authentic food! Friendly staff, fresh ingredients, lots of choice. I recommend the burrata as an appetizer and anything pasta. Know that the gnocchi with pesto is more of a creamy pesto texture than an oily one. Their pistachio dessert is also incredible. It's a layered pistachio cake, an Italian recipe which I've rarely found in US restaurants. Comes with delicious ice cream (caramel type). Perfect for sharing. Good choice of wines as well. The wine is good quality, mostly imported from Italy. Owners and waiters are Italian. Dined in with some friends when the restaurant reopened for indoor Feb 13. It was great! I hope to be back soon to try more of their dishes! read more

After all these years of walking on 55th st, I never thought to step inside this restaurant. Now I am reminiscing those words my elementary school teachers always said, "Do not judge a book by its cover." Those words is a true testament to Nocello. Outside, it your average midtown restaurant, inside is a friendly, great serviced Italian restaurant that stays close to its Northern Italian tradition. It is great for intimate small dinners and holds large 10+ parties. It was my aunt's suggestion to try out the restaurant because her foodie neighbor brought her here 10 years ago. The owner rotates around the restaurant and is super friendly. We always had our waters and wine poured even though we sat at a corner table. Speaking of the wine- all the bottles are priced fairly!! Make sure you get a bottle or you are doing yourself injustice! Their risotto special is definitely a must get. When the waiter/ waitress brings the parmesan cheese, make sure you have every rice coated with cheese! I also recommend trying any of their chicken breast dishes. The chicken nocello was super hearty and cooked perfectly! I will be back next time to try more of their apps and fish/ seafood! read more

Update: march 2012 Pre dinner at Nocello with Close friends and now a 4th star! The food was absolutely delicious tonight, the atmosphere was romantic, the waiter's timing was perfect and that cheesecake still is wonderful. We had several appetizers including a burratta, large fried sardines over mesclin salad and carpaccio over arugula-all excellent. I had the lamb chop special which was coated and fried to perfection. The fresh water shrimp special contained 6 very large shrimp, almost looked like 6 small lobster tails. The seafood over linguine entree was very fresh calamari, clams and mussels over linguine in a delectable red sauce that was worthy of dipping their tasty rustic bread into! For dessert, once again it was ricotta cheesecake and cappuccino with the floating brown sugar heart! This is my new pre theatre restaurant.
