I should have known better when we were let into an unmarked sketch side door, but I had been to Nomads years ago when it was more established so I didn't think too much. I was set on getting the double/tripple forward helix. I had a very similar experience to a fellow reviewer. Blake seemed confident in knowing what I was asking for but when he placed the marks on my ear it was all wrong. Thankfully, rather than going down that path I decided to just add another cartilage stud above one I already had and replace the jewelry in that one to match. He replaced my older cartilage ring w the new flower one pictured. This was a 6yo piercing done in Klamath falls. I've had no issue w that one thus far. He then proceeded to pierce my cartilage with the round opal ring pictured. (Top) I'm not sure what angle he was looking at it from because it's so crooked! From the back, from the front. All the way around... he could have just pierced on the freckle and it would have been aligned better. This was done in May 2022 and it's not healed. Despite the recommended cleaning and maintenance there is a painful hard lump that's formed under the stud.. I was thinking about going back to have him place a shorter stud in hopes that would help the healing process but after seeing recent reviews I plan to stay as far away as possible! read more

Wow, do I wish a zero star review was possible. I made the mistake of stepping into Blake's "studio" last November, and I'm still in disbelief. I asked him for a forward double helix. His response was one that made it sound as though my request was too easy - as if he'd done it several times. That there would be no issues whatsoever because of his "years and years" of experience and his book that he had written on piercings. As I settled in and he was placing the marking dots, he told my friend she was not allowed to take a video of the appointment... for fear of his expertise level techniques being stolen. There was also heavy mention of his lawyer father. At the time, this didn't make much sense, but we went with it. He gave me a mirror to show the markings. I... had no idea what to say. But it was all wrong. A forward double helix is a series of 2 or 3 piercings on the anterior facing part of the cartilage just above the Tragus. His markings were on the superior curvature of my ear. When I asked him for the marks to be corrected, he was adamantly telling me that I was making the wrong choice, but that he would do what I asked. The second series of marks were more of what I had wanted. However, per my friend's observation, Blake prepared the needle with his back slightly facing me. Then, he turned in one rapid motion and pushed the needle through my ear. No line up, no attention to detail. It doesn't come as a shock that the piercings I was left with were astoundingly misaligned and, of course, painful. I sent Blake a text after the appointment asking for a refund. His response was the cherry on top for the whole experience. I will attach said text thread below. Luckily, I was able to take out his poor work and let my ear heal before going to someone who is ACTUALLY professional and experienced. This person was in just as much shock as I was and stood firm in the his statement that what I had had was the worst forward double helix he had seen. I've had 4 piercing from Blake now and each time has been great. I spontaneously called for a nose piercing and he was able to get me in right away and I was in and out in nearly 20ish min. Blake is super knowledgeable and honest which can be mistaken as too direct and dismissive but he was really cool about placement and ensuring it looked good aesthetically as well as making sure it was in the right spot. He's not going to put a ring in that is going to be hidden or oddly placed. For my nose ring I was really set on a ring but he directed me to a stud and explained his reasoning but also gave me the option for the ring. Overall super happy! For Covid times I felt really comfortable and everything was sterile. Get Bactine for aftercare. The shop is Cash or Venmo only! The location was on the 2nd floor and was tricky to find but when I called they came down to get me. read more

TLDR: shop owner was dismissive, disorganized, and careless with my body and time. Owner made an appointment with me to switch a nose stud to a ring, was 10 minutes late, did not size my nose ring to what I had asked for, and when I asked him to tighten it in the appointment, he claimed he did not have enough time. But offered a free fix-up on his jewelry (he had made it) anytime. So I called him to set up an appointment, and it was pretty last minute (but it was his call to take the appointment), and I arrive along with two other clients who are all booked for the same time, and he's like oh! this isn't the kind of nose ring I can tighten really quick, it will take like 30 minutes, can you hang around in the area for 2 hours, until I'm done with these other clients? So I booked a new appointment a week out, was given a thirty minute slot, and I show up and it is yet again double booked with another client. He remembered sending me away before, and was like, okay, we'll do you first... Then he proceeded to modify the ring in ~5 minutes. I questioned him on the time since he'd made a big deal about it twice, and he gave me the most sarcastic, oh I lost yours and had this one premade lying around the shop. The ring is still too big. And he kept calling me the wrong name (not even my deadname...just a random ass guy name). read more

This is not a warm, fuzzy experience. First - the setting: Lots of sweet little people lined up to have their ears pierced; a hidden store front that opens up to a small space decorated with large primitive Indonesian carvings, some as large as some kids, and it's all heavily perfumed with cloying sandalwood incense; overpowering in this space - not inviting for kids, very intimidating! Then there's his manner: He barks at each kid; asking - "did you see the video on the website? how old is the girl there? what do you use to clean the piercings? No, no, no, not that!" My daughter is already anxious and scared and his attitude is entirely unhelpful. The space is tiny; I am relegated to a chair in the corner, too far away to hold her hand - I could get in his way. He marks the ears with sharpie and just proceeds - doesn't check in with my daughter if where he marked is ok with her. It's her body, and the hand mirror is right there - it would be so easy to do. But it's indicative of his style; why bother? The piercing itself is fast, professional, clean. That and his cute kid behind the sales counter are the only redeeming factors. BTW you pay 140$ (sliding scale that is age based) for the 5 min process; and it also feels like you are being processed. And it's cash only. Hmm. It's bizarre that he said to me that young kids are his specialty; 20-somethings will find this cool, for young kids this is a jarring experience. If you want this to be special for your little girl or boy, in a good memory sort of way, don't go there. read more

Here is what I wish I would have read before I made this appt. i took my daughter in yesterday after reading rave reviews about how Blake was the best piercer for kids. At first, he was fine. He spoke to her and was a little high and mighty, but ok. I should have walked out as soon as he told my daughter she needed to work on her talking skills. My daughter picked out her earrings and was excited but nervous. He pierced her ear and she flinched twice with her hands while she was doing the piercing. She didn't touch her ears or his hands, her hands maybe went to her mid torso. She was told that she couldn't have her other ear done, and we could come Back next week when she could behave better. She was made to feel about an inch tall, and she's 8. She sat still and didn't say a word, just flinched. We were told he doesn't coddle and that's fine, but I didn't expect her to be treated like an adult. I wasn't allowed to sit by her or hold her hand. There was zero patience taken with her, and she left feeling absolutely terrible about herself. The tears spilled over as soon as we walked out the door and she felt embarrassed and humiliated. She didn't even want to look at me. Oh, and also, were also triple booked so there were 4 people standing in the hall watching and waiting while this was going on. We just had my daughter's piercing removed today, and not only was a larger gauge used than is standard (even for an adult), but the hole is crooked so we have to let it close over before it can be redone. I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT A LARGE GAUGE WAS BEING USED. I'm not talking about a stud - this was a larger gauge that's used for body piercing, not ears. I've had my ears pierced for 31 years and the earring we removed from her ear won't even go into my piercing. The hole in the back of her ear is so crooked that it's almost in the crease of where her earlobe meets her head. We had it fixed at TLC, where the owner was amazing. She came in on a day she was closed just to help us out, and she didn't even charge me. We made an appointment with her to have them redone. I would highly recommend going to TLC instead. She is kind, patient, and is great with kids. My kiddo is tough and resilient and she's fine now, and excited to get her ears redone when this one heals, but I am absolutely furious. To put in a larger than standard gauge without mentioning this to the parent is absolutely horrific. Why in the world would an 8 year old want to get a larger hole than standard in her ears?! Not even to mention the fact that the piercing is crooked and would have bothered her for the rest of her life if we left it in. I had several of my students recommend this place and the owner for a simple nose piercing I was interested in. I've had my nose pierced for 11 years and wanted a simple and delicate rose gold hoop. He hand makes them so they are a little more pricey, but absolutely worth it. I feel confident that this jewelry will last. It is a family owned business and his daughter happen to know one of my colleagues. We had a great conversation prior to the piercing being put in. When I went into the piercing room, everything was sterile and he is absolutely professional. I did my research so I knew that his work was phenomenal and I felt bad because my simple nose piercing pales in comparison to the incredible work he has done on other bodies. The owner was actually a curator on an exhibit I saw years ago at the Museum of Natural History in New York. It was on the history of tattooing and its origins. Small world. I echo that I don't think this is a place for children. The owner was rude not just to my daughter, but to me as well. I understand it may be an effective tactic to be hard and direct with the kids, however he crossed a line. She shed a couple tears after the first piercing and instead of just giving her a minute to compose herself he snapped at her, called her a whiny baby and told me I coddle her. He then said he was about to just not do the second ear and leave her to be a "pirate". All because she shed a couple tears, no where near inconsolable. My daughter stopped in order to get the second ring done however she was then scared to death of this man that kept snapping at her. I didn't go in expecting a warm fuzzy experience however I was taken back by just how unpleasant the experience was. There's plenty of other options in Portland. Blake on 01/23/21 helped rescue a nipple piercing that he had done a literal year before. I had to have a mammogram here in Bend and was told by the radiology department that I had to take out the nipple rings before the procedure. Before the procedure I took them out and while there at radiology on the day of the mammograms I was told I "didn't" have to take out rings before the procedure. Needless to say I was quite upset since I was very careful for a literal year with the nipple piercing. Blake was able to re insert a 14 g nipple ring without difficulty after I had it out for a month. THANK GOD Blake was able to insert another nipple ring. Blake was very professional, blunt and to the point. That is what I like about his service. No mixing words. I called to make sure an ear piercer was in and made an appointment for 2pm. I walked from home and circled the building about 3 times looking for his space. I couldn't find it so I called him at 2:02 saying I couldn't find his storefront. He was immediately defensive and said it sounded like I didn't have an appointment and I told him yes I did but had been circling and couldn't find his storefront. He told me he was outside with his kids (???) and I "couldn't miss" him. He said he was on the NE side I said I didn't know what that meant (I'm not from here and even still, I'm not great with cardinal directions) and he insisted I couldn't miss him. So at this point I started to tell him that I wanted to cancel but he hung up before I could finish. I circled the building again and tucked away behind a parking lot far from the sidewalk was a child in the doorway and a sign INSIDE the storefront that I could barely distinguish. Now. He maybe was having a bad day but judging by other reviews, if you're looking for a pleasant experience and value customer service, this isn't the place to go. Furthermore, letting your clients know that your store is difficult to find and giving more specific instructions on how to find it would be stellar. Fuck it, I'm going to Claire's. ETA: JESUS H. I went to a piercing shop on hawthorne, and I tell the piercer I want an industrial. He takes one look at my ear and says its impossible because my ear will never heal correctly because of the shape of my ear. I come to Nomad Piercing and Blake says the other piercer didn't know what he was talking about, and that an industrial would work fine on my ear. He also bashed piercers who worked on a popular place like hawthorne. Blake said he relocated so that only people who knew about him and his expertise would come to his shop. I got my industrial. It started moving. It migrated out of my ear. The migration wasn't painful, so I didn't even realize it happening. Now, I have what looks like a tiny chew mark on my ear. TL;DR: Low attention to customer needs, unreliable work quality, not forthcoming, upsells, probably sexist. This is extremely belated because I got pierced here in 2010-ish. I went here on three occasions, the first occasion was an industrial piercing that went fine. The second and third times were for a septum piercing (it had to be re-done). I showed up to the studio, it was open, Blake was there, he was sick. I should have left at that point. He proceeded to do the piercing, it came out at a 20-40degree angle off-axis, then AFTER the piercing asked me if I knew I had a deviated septum. No, I did not know that, I didn't even know what a deviated septum was, isn't that your job to check beforehand? He gave me the equivalent of a bent paperclip as a retainer and told me to keep physically twisting it "straight" as it was healing to make the piercing "move" into correct alignment. Shockingly, that did not work, and I eventually took the bent paperclip out of my face and let it heal. I went back, and instead of getting a refund like I should have done, I let him re-do it at no charge. This time it was only a few degrees off-axis -- possibly a reasonable amount given the very mildly deviated septum -- though he missed the soft spot and hit the nerve bundle. He also tried multiple times to sell me septum jewelry "for girls" because "women seem to like this style" even though I was extremely clear multiple times that I had zero interest. He also suggested he places septum piercings differently according to gender. I don't remember chronologically where that goes in the story. The studio was professional-looking (for adults, anyways), the sanitation technique (other than being there while sick...) was professional, and the placing of my industrial piercing was perfect, but damn dude. read more

Nomad Piercing is THE BEST. I am a TOTAL wuss when it comes to needles - completely terrified of them, used to have to be held down for shots, the works. But my cousin knows Blake (Mr. Nomad) through friends, and he has done the friends' piercings as well as hers. I decided when it was time to get my nose piercing done I was going with my cousin to Blake. Mind you, I live in LA, and we have no shortage of piercers here! Blake was AWESOME. He is very professional, cares immensely about what he does and takes it super seriously. I was certain it was going to hurt - all that cartilage in your nose and all. But it didn't hurt at ALL. Not a BIT. I couldn't believe it - it was over before I could even think about kicking up a fuss. Blake was super wonderful dealing with chicken shit me. On top of that, he has really great 'bevel' cut noserings that lay flat against your nose without creating any kind of huge crater in your piercing. This is my go-to piercing studio in Portland! I'm very particular about choosing a piercer and will only go to those who have years of expertise, skill, and true passion for piercing. Blake (the owner) is a dedicated and talented piercer. He also performs difficult custom piercings, and designs his own unique jewelry. (Check out his photo album in his store of some of the piercings he has done). Blake is devoted to using accurate and sanitary piercing methods and high-quality jewelry. The signs in his store remind you that if you get your piercings done right the first time, you can prevent infections and problems. I believe his services are worth it because if you get a cheap piercing (e.g. at the mall) that ends up being infected or have problems healing, you'll end up paying more in the long run from buying medication to clear the infection and getting the piercing re-done if you choose to. In short. you get what you pay for. I've gotten my nose, labret, and lip pierced by him. I love his unique jewelry selection. Plus, you can have jewelry custom made to order! I havent had a piercing here yet, but i will as soon as i decide what to get. i have always shied away from piercing studios but this place is inviting. first of all, its a museum of tribal body art from around the world. the owner is knowledgeable about everything and i think i read that he's been piercing longer than anyone else in this country(!) he took the time to talk with me and my partner though i was just browsing. most of the metal pieces are made in-house, and the diamonds they use are from a cruelty-free source in Russia. (way-to-go conscious Portland!) Might I add there is also a kids play area. My 20 month old son was entertained. He wanted me to pay for the full service through an app over the phone with him in order to make the appointment . A big disappointment. Be careful if you're bringing in a kid. I brought my 8 year old daughter in to get her ears pierced, and some friends had recommended Blake. While he is clearly a more than capable piercer, his skills as a business owner are sorely lacking. Long story short...my daughter got scared when she saw the needle and changed her mind. When I asked for a partial refund, Blake refused. I was more than willing to pay something for the 7 minutes that we were in the back room, but $60 for him to to sterilize a needle and for his 10 year old daughter to run my credit card? His answer is that his "chicken out" policy is clearly stated on a piece of paper taped under the counter. I don't doubt that it is, but there is a lot of visual clutter in that area, and I stopped looking at the notes, which all came across as an ego trip..."I am the world's foremost expert, so if you question my authority, I will charge you extra." (paraphrased) Also, I didn't even take the earrings that are included in the $60 fee. When I called him, he did offer them to me, but why would we want them? This policy should have been clearly stated in bold print on the agreement, or at least should have been mentioned verbally before running the credit card. I feel that any reasonable business owner would have been willing to refund at least half of the charge, which would both more than cover the cost of the needle and a few minutes of labor, as well as make it likely that we'd return when my daughter is ready. As is, he guaranteed that we won't. And I should mention that there were no other customers in the shop during our visit. read more

My 9yo daughter had her ears pierced at Nomad yesterday and it was a great experience for her. As a disclaimer, she is a total ball sack about even the slightest pain. She had been wanting to get them done for a while and I will admit I was very apprehensive about how she would handle it. We were both very surprised at how fast and painless it was, and I was certainly relieved that she handled it like a champ. Before going in, we watched his videos of piercing other children and we talked extensively about what to expect as far as pain and aftercare. I felt having her as educated and prepared as possible was my responsibility and would only make things easier. Blake was professional and informative with both me and my daughter. He has quite the reputation for working with kids as I understand he has pierced over 15,000 of them which is impossible to find at a piercing studio. I wanted my child to have a quality piercing from a professional as opposed to having some teenager at the mall do it, and I am grateful he provides this service. No it's not cheap, but that's what you pay for, quality and experience. Day two and there is no swelling, no redness and no pain. I can however understand some of the negative reviews from parents who have brought their kids here. This is a no bullshit shop as he is not going to coddle your child or parents who haven't educated/prepared their children. For some families and kids holding the teddybear at Claire's while they get shot with the ear gun, (which I can imagine is never properly sanitized) by a teenager, for $20, is just a better fit. After her ears have healed we will certainly be back for some custom new earrings. read more

I had a fabulous experience at Nomad Piercing Studio. Being a medical student, I am a bit picky (germs, anatomy and such), so finding a great piercing studio was important to me. I was pleased at the knowledge, expertise, cleanliness and also the fact that all this shop does is piercing. There is an old saying "you can't be good at everything, so pick one thing and become an expert in it" I believe this shop has done just that. I have gotten 7 piercings done at nomads, including my nose, ears, and industrial piercing. blake is by far the best piercer you will find, its true he does have a no-bullshit policy. if your scared he will wait until you are ready and comfort you in a stern realistic manner . but his piercings are flawless, i barely felt any of my piercings. the first piercing i got from him was my nose, i was so frightened when i went in but he was nice and extremely knowledgeable and he assured me it would be fine. he was right, i did not feel the piercing at all. i had to ask him if he had done it yet! he also makes custom jewelry and will do piercing projects, so if your doubting you can get a certain piercing or a certain type of jewelry, just go in and tell him what you want. he will find a way to work with you and make sure your getting what you want. the prices are a bit high but its because he uses the absolute best top of the line jewelry, he only has a $10 service charge for most piercings, so what your paying for really is the quality of the jewelry. but what you get is what you pay for, and you really do get quality in every area at nomads. i have has such good experiences with him that i go in excited instead of nervous every time. all in all, nomads is your only option if you want quality jewelry and a painless piercing experience! read more

I brought my eight-year-old daughter to Nomad to get her ears pierced for the first time. We had a fantastic experience. The owner/operator is great with kids, and he uses the highest quality materials. He is almost a craftsman with his equipment. What I appreciate as much as anything else is the emphasis his studio places on ear piercing as an important cultural ritual. I got my nostril pierced here and the piercing itself was fine. Very quick, nothing but a deep pinching pain that lasted a second. I probably should have taken the cavalier attitude of the guy that pierced me and the fact that there was a child working the counter as warning signs, though. I got next to nothing in the way of aftercare instructions. "You can change it in six weeks, and don't touch it with dirty fingers" - then I was sent on my way. As this was my first piercing, I took that six weeks thing to heart and took out my nose screw at that time, then tried to put in a hoop and ended up making my nose all bloody. I then couldn't get the screw to go back in and had to use an earring as a placeholder.
