Pretty peony by JD at Anatomy Tattoo
    Christina M.

My friend was looking for someone to do a botanical tattoo on her arm, and she was not receiving many responses from those who specialized in botanicals in the Portland area. We aren't from the area but we were certain we wanted one done that weekend in Portland. After searching online for a few places that allowed for walk in clients, Anatomy Tattoo came up and we decided to check them out and inquire about timing and availability. We were paired up with JD O'Kelly, who is soft spoken and very friendly, and he agreed to take on her project, and was excited about doing a pretty peony for her. We scheduled an appt for 2 days out before we were leaving, and I was impressed by his demeanor that I decided to get a touch up done of a tattoo I already had. After seeing some ideas, JD sketched out his interpretation, and when we saw it on the day of the appt, it was PERFECT and exactly what she wanted! The final result of the peony was gorgeous! He then worked on my touch up, and he was patient while I hemmed and hawed about the size and placement of some extra stars I wanted to add. He did a great job bringing my 20+ year old tattoo back to life, I love the coloring that he added to mine. JD was friendly and personable throughout the entire experience for both of us. The rates and deposit here are reasonable, and there was no pretentiousness about this place. Everyone there seemed nice and open to walk-in and scheduled appointments. JD is a true artist and I can't say enough great things about our experience!

As you see here the leaves are NOT shaded like the others she did and are not finished whatsoever.

I went to Anatomy this past summer... My zoom consultation was super good and I was very excited to come in and get some work done. Momma Tomma was my artist, not only did I not feel welcomed, I didn't hear a word from her during my entire appointment until it was time to pay. The one thing she said to me was "don't move your head." The worst part about all of this was that she didn't even finish. This was a single session as I was adding more flowers to my current tattoo. As I am looking at her work I have lost ink in multiple area and now have scarring. Super upsetting because she isn't cheap, and not to mention the owner.Won't be going back unfortunately, after this experience I'm finally gaining the courage to find a new artist.

I love this studio, everyone made me super comfortable. I go to Dev and have had such great experiences. Several of my tattoos were done here by a guy named Ed. Ed sadly no longer works at Anatomy but all of the artists are great. I highly recommend coming in and taking a look at the different portfolios especially if you are looking for artists that specialize in "old school" looking tattoos. The prices are fair and of course my tattoos look fantastic. I have had my half sleve and back tattoo for about 7 years now and the color still looks great!

I went to Anatomy Tattoo on my birthday. My GF and made the appt. the day before. I was extremely excited! My GF had a different tattoo artist and hers turned out beautifully. My experience was different. Originally, I thought my tattoo was going to turn out great because I was going to have my work completed by the owner. Unfortunately, my tattoo was and is a disgrace. I understand that line work is difficult. I never imagined it would turn out this bad. It's embarrassing to show my tattoo at this point. In addition, the word, "Grace," specifically the A and C are messed up. Anyway, maybe her other work is great. I hope so! I now have an appt. On 6/16 with my ex-boyfriend to fix it. "Hurt So Good" tattoo shop. I should have gone to him in the first place but he is booked out 6 months. I was impatient and now I am paying the price. I have never written a review for anything, but I figured when it comes to something permanent on your body, it was worth it.

Momma Tomma is a bad ass.

This shop is like a home to me. I've had the honor of being tattooed by the owner, Tomma, for years now. She has pretty much done, or redone both of my sleeves as well as some art on other areas of my body. I initially went to her to have cover up work done and have been amazed by what she was able to create. You would never know I had anything there before. I love her aesthetic and color work. Tomma says what she means and means what she says. She is a badass Boss Babe and runs her shop fairy and with integrity. From spending numerous hours there, I have become well acquainted with the wonderful staff. So many different personalities with such different talents and aesthetics. They work well as a team with the same goals in mind. It's been awesome to watch the progress and changes Tomma and her team have made to Anatomy over the years. It just gets better every time I'm there. Recently, they did more renovations and added microblading to their services. The room is gorgeous and inviting and Sina did the most incredible job on my patchy eyebrows...or what's left of them after the 90's fad of waxing them down to tiny lines. Besides the convenient location, they offer off street parking and accept all people of all ages and background. They constantly do fundraisers to give back to their community and they raised over $10,000 for the ACLU and thousands for other amazing organizations. It's located off the bus line and has a great walking accessibility with anything you could want within a close distance. Set up your consultation today. You won't regret it.

I had my first tattoo done by Rio Chanel here and she was amazing! I met with her for a consult a few weeks before I got the actual tattoo and she was super nice and it helped me feel more comfortable with her before getting my tattoo. Then, when my appointment came, she showed me the sketches she had drawn and was willing to make any changes I wanted! I'm super happy with how it turned out and will definitely be coming back for more tattoos from her! :)

This is a cool little shop with a good vibe. My low score has to do with Momma Tomma. I went in with a piece with an odd flow. My first tat was a bow that I had for a couple years. I went to an artist with a good rep that added flowers and ribbons but it still looked weak. I went to another artist who added lilies on my shoulder blade which I still love. I lived with it for about 8 yrs and then I had a lot of extra time and decided to get it reworked into something beautiful. I was assured by Tomma that she could make it look dainty and beautiful. I went in for 6 sessions ranging from 1 hr to 3 hrs. I left a 20% tip each time. I know stupid! All appts but one were at 12:30 and I was the first customer. I had to wait for her numerous times. She told me it had to be a cover up and I panicked when I saw the giant purple flower, Dahlia and blue Hydrangea and told her how I felt and she reassured me again and said that she was going to go back and put in low lights and shading and that the flowers would pop, and yes I went back again for a total of 6 times just knowing that it would all come together in the end! NOT! All the hrs we spent together she barely talked to me, showed no interest in me or anything about me. She was polite but cool. Her mind always seemed somewhere else, not giving me 100%. My third session we took a little break, I went on my phone to Instagram and saw she had posted about 15 minutes before the break while she was working on me!!! MULTITASKING! I'd rather of had 100% putting permanent ink on me! Yes, I still went back. I felt I was into it too far! She didn't have a design for me until the third session after I told her I needed to see what she was going to do next. My fifth session I heard her tell one of the other artists she was going to 'power through the leaves'! When I took the wrapping off the next morning I had blowouts and uneven lines. My last session was scheduled for 3 hrs and she was supposed to finish the leaves and pull everything together. She only spent about 2 hrs. When I took off wrappings the next morning my heart sank! I had to go to yet another artist to fix her work!!!! Just unbelievable! If she had done stellar on the filigree I wouldn't have felt so ill. Good news, I did find someone but still had to pay even more money to fix Tomma's sloppy parts. I paid $1652.55 for tattoo + $385 tip for a total of $2037.55, I should of had a killer tattoo! My new artist another $130 + tip! to fix the filigree, smeared shading around filigree and some leaves. He's going to fix where the three huge flowers meet at a later date. I always went in with a positive attitude because I wanted nothing but for this to be gorgeous and I wanted good energy around the experience. That Tomma let me walk out of HER SHOP with my finished piece really not finished and sloppy areas still blows me away! She then said if I ever wanted to redo another part of the tattoo to give her a call!!!! The pics say everything! I couldn't insert pic's where I wanted so will post original tattoo pic top and bottom , Tomma's 3 large flowers with smears that weren't there before, Tomma's filigree and last fixed filigree with my new artist.

Thanks Anne for making my first tattoo experience an amazing one. My sister and I love our sister tattoos!! Beautiful work!

Got my first tattoo at Anatomy Tattoo on Tuesday, 8/7/18 and I absolutely love it! Anne was our artist and she did an incredible job from start to finish. She designed our sister tattoo and it's perfect. Now, I'm thinking about what I want next. My sister plans to go back for a touch up on one of her other tattoos.

I'll admit that this is my first tattoo but I still think it deserves all the stars. (Momma)Tomma was my artist and god bless her. She answered the questions I had and let me know what I needed to do to make it so nothing went wrong. Not only that but I'm well pleased with how the tattoo itself turned out. I would highly recommend her to any of my friends. The shop was clean and it wasn't difficult to find at all. I'm already thinking of scheduling my second one.

    Erin's Rose, by Lucky Maloney

Our experience with Anatomy Tattoo was at the convention in Philadelphia. My 18 year old was a fan of Lucky Malony; no one else would due for a rose tattoo. He did not disappoint in any way. He made her feel like her getting the tattoo she wanted, was all that mattered. It is stunning work, custom drawn just for her. Lucky and his team worked like a unit, looking out for each other. They where after all, across the country from home. Thank you Lucky and Co. Best Wishes, see you next year!

I chose Anatomy Tattoo because it used to be Painless Steel and I'd had good luck with their shop in Missoula, MT. I was a little disappointed to learn it wasn't Painless anymore, but looked at Ed's portfolio, talked to him about the design I wanted, and felt that he would be a good artist regardless of what the shop was called. So I made my appt and left a crude mock-up of my idea for a tattoo. We talked a little about possible designs, but I was very open to his ideas about how the end product would look as long as it incorporated 3 elements. At my appt he showed me the design. I was so impressed--- I was amazed. His design was so much better looking than I could have imagined. At that point I knew I'd found a good artist and the right one for my tattoo that I'd been wanting/planning for almost a year. I had a 4-hour appt but he ended up only going for 2 hours, which was plenty. He finished the outline of the entire thing and I'll go back for the shading in a week to 10 days. I know it's hard for smaller, less known shops to get customers in a business where word of mouth is the best advertising, so I want people to know that if you go to Anatomy Tattoo you will be very happy with the tattoo you get. Ed was my artist and I will definitely be going back for any future tattoos.

My friend and I were wanting matching plastic vampire teeth tattoos since it'd be Halloween weekend and he was so kind when I told him what we wanted and mentioned he hadn't finished his flash sheet so he'd add in the teeth, (spoiler, they were PERFECT). The day we were planning on coming in was their planned flash day so we knew we had to anticipate a potential wait. The rainy Portland weather was in our favor because, even though we were unable to make our way in at 10:30AM as he recommended, we ventured in at 3PM and still got a spot in line. Jared was great, adding the text I wanted to my flash, and even touching up a small hand/wrist tattoo that was poorly done by someone else in a different state prior. Truly, so thankful he answered the phone that day bc I got a great vibe from him. He was also able to successfully turn my "splotch" knuckle tattoo (my loving nickname for it) to a beautiful black skull that ACTUALLY STAYED PUT (it was the 4th attempt over an old scar I had and he was the only one to successfully have a tattoo stick on it without it looking weird once healed). Since Jared was short on time before an appt, Ali did my friends matching fangs and they both turned out amazingly. Overall, I now fully intend to make the journey from Sacramento to Portland anytime I want something done so I can specifically have him do it or his shop-mate that does phenomenal portrait style flash/tattoos (she was diagonal from us when we were there - blonde long hair and beanie). The shop was super clean, artists were all super friendly, front desk apprentice was easy on the eyes, what's not love? 100/10 could not recommend this place enough!

I made the terrible decision to be tattooed by Toby. I went in to start on a full sleeve, although it wasn't technically a full sleeve but a 3/4 sleeve. I have a tattoo on my upper arm that takes up half of my upper arm. During my 1st appointment we discussed that we are going to keep and incorporate that one. At my 1st appointment Toby told me that it would take 3 sessions since it wouldn't be an actual full sleeve. I paid for a full day session. He told me at my 1st appt that the stop time will be once I tap out. Our first session he ended early and said that his kids were sick. He specifically told me that our next session won't be the same. He also said our next session wouldn't take as long to get started. I went back in for my 2nd session yesterday at 10am. He showed up late like he did for our 1st appt. It wasn't until about 11am that he started drawing on me. It took him about 4 hours to draw on me. Keep in mind we haven't even started on my upper arm. He was drawing on my lower arm. Finally by 3pm we get started tattooing. The table wasn't working properly so he had to reset up a new one. Then some random person walks in looking for a tattoo. He stopped tattooing me to go chat with the person. Then throughout my entire session he purposely inflicts maximum pain. He seems to think that I don't have any large or decent pieces. I have my entire back done. I also have portraits and pieces on my legs. I have good quality work in those areas. I only mentioned to him that I wanted my back covered up, but because I don't like it anymore and don't have those beliefs anymore. It's not due to the quality. The tattoos that he was starting to cover on my arm are much older tattoos that I got when I was younger. Based off of that I suppose he thinks I don't know any better. My ex is also a tattoo artist so I understand needle groupings, heavy hands vs light hands, dry wipe vs wet wipe etc. Throughout my entire session he never finished a single area. He jumps from area to area throughout the entire process. He would randomly jump from my wrist, elbow, side of arm, just all over the place. He opens up the area and works on it for a while, then moves to another area for like 20min or so, then moves back to the area he opened up. He inflicts serious pain. I hinted to him several times that each time you do that it hurts much worse. He never listened and continued to do it. I told him from the start that I wanted to work in a particular area first. He didn't listen. He is super heavy handed intentionally. He dry wipes with a paper towel the whole time. He inflicts maximum pain to attempt to get you to tap early. At the very start of our 2nd session after the marker was drawn on, I flat out asked him will you be able to finish this today to which he yes. By about 10pm he said we should call it a night. I literally only had maybe 1/2 of a half sleeve. There was so much work to complete still. I told him no I want to keep going. He didn't want to but I was persistent. So we get back to tattooing. I asked him flat out why did you tell me that we would have this finished today if that isn't the case. He said well there are a lot of factors like the way a client takes pain. I told him he put me in a ton of pain but I never once stopped him so what do you mean. I told him I feel lied to, taken advantage of, and just how unhappy I was by this and that I won't be continuing with him. I was planning on getting 2 full sleeves, full chest piece, and a cover up on my entire back. I told him you literally told me that for a full day session that it means we stop once I tap out. He got extremely combative. He said that in the fine print says he only tattoos 7 hrs max. I said why did you lie to me then? He ended up calling me an asshole and threatened to stop my work mid session to leave it. He said it's his right to do so. I said that I'd leave a review about this and he said that's "thats fine, I don't give a f". I'm not sure if he ended up texting his family or people or what. But suddenly around midnight all his people showed up at the tattoo studio I guess to try to intimidate me. I paid $ 3,225 in total and I don't have a completed half sleeve. I don't even have a single section of my arm that is complete due to him jumping around constantly. Literally not even one single area of this "half sleeve" is completed. During our argument he scoffed at me and was the mentality of how dare you .. but he admitted flat out a full sleeve is 5 grand. I said okay and I've paid over 3 grand now and I don't even have a completed half sleeve. He refuses to take accountability. He is a very selfish mentality, a liar, and he will gaslight you the entire time. He pretends to be a nice person but he is absolutely not. He takes advantage of people and rips them off.
