Hot damn - on a cold cold night! Recently we saw the old mercury dip below 30 on a weeknight. Prime time to check out the new (to us) ice cream place around the corner (around several corners, actually, but close enough). Nona's is tucked away in quaint Hingham center, and I can only imagine it's an absolute nightmare in the summer. But on a brisk winter's night, we had the run of the joint. Flavors rotate (with some basics always available), but you can't really go wrong with just about any of what they are offering. But you CAN go varying degrees of right, so I strongly urge you, if it's available (and it's probably seasonal to precisely now) to get the gingerbread. As many scoops as you can hold. Then another. Fast for a week. It's the bomb diggity! Pumpkin was exceptional as well - so was the caramelized. So was the pumpkin the second time I had. And I'm sure the gingerbread will be even more profound the second time around (just like Shalamar says). read more

One of my favorite ice cream joints around the South Shore, Nona's homemade ice cream one you MUST try. There's always a line out the door in this restaurant, and honestly the store isn't very well laid out for a line, but hey, it's worth it. Located in the center of historic Hingham, this place is quaint and adorable. Their ice cream sandwiches are to die for and I love that they come individually wrapped. There are so many flavors to try here and they also change them up seasonally. Can't go wrong here. read more

This place is really cute and the ice cream flavors are so so good. I got a brownie sundae to go with the scituate caramel one I believe it is and cookie dough. Gosh it was so creamy and enjoyable. It is a little bit on the sweet side for me but that could've been due to the combination of brownie, caramel and cookie dough. They have a good amount of seating but most people took theirs out the door. Definitely worth the detour after visiting Nantasket Beach. read more

I am an ice cream fanatic and an even bigger critic. So when I came in last weekend for an ice cream cone- I already knew what I wanted in mind. I was on the search for a sweeter ice cream in a chocolate dipped waffle cone. Having worked at an ice cream shop for many years, I know what looks good and NONA'S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM IS AWESOME! I ended up getting a medium cotton candy ice cream in a chocolate dipped waffle cone (and went big and had the one with the sprinkles on it). It was decently priced- a bit expensive but I was expecting it with the large waffle cone added on. Great location- the line moved very fast- and the workers were VERY friendly. They were even offering samples when the line was out the door- they are truly there for the customers! I am definitely planning on going back when I am back in town! read more

I wish I had never tried Nona's coconut almond chip ice cream. It is HANDS DOWN the best coconut almond chip ice cream on the South Shore. And I should know. I'm a connoisseur... The ice cream is great and the prices are good for what you are getting. My issue here is their customer service. I came in on Friday and the two employees were not friendly at all, they actually seemed miserable, which did not make me feel welcomed. It seemed I was causing them a huge inconvenience when I asked them for a to go bag. I was also the next person in line and waiting patiently, but another party came in after me and they were helped before me. The ice cream (as far as I was last told) is made on the premises and is family run (so they care about their product and your experience!). I can't possibly choose my favorite flavor. There is a coconut almond chocolate chip which is fabulous...then there's Baxter Turtle - but then there are the good old standbys...strawberry, butter pecan, vanilla Grapenut...all delicious. The serving sizes seem to have gotten more generous over the past years - which is great since it is a bit pricey but completely worth every penny (...and calorie!). But since that first taste of the Mint m&m ice cream I've been hooked. I live 15-20 minutes away and have to pass a number of other ice cream shops along the way but it's so worth it. Nona's is good, they have unique and delicious ice cream flavors. The only down-side is that the ice cream is extremely soft and melty. I don't think they keep their freezers cold enough! If you get a cone, you have to slurp it up before it falls all over you. I wish their ice cream was harder/colder so that you can eat it slowly and enjoy it. read more

I'm an ice cream snob and Nona's is my favorite! Not sure what some reviewers mean about "snobby teenagers" working here- the employees have always been helpful and efficient with us. The ice cream is homemade and soooooo creamy and delicious. Way better than the Brighams a block away. Prices are quite reasonable (esp. for Hingham) and there is always a big selection of flavors. Toasted coconut is my favorite, along with the seasonal pumpkin in the fall- but I have never tried a flavor I didn't like. Their ice cream cakes are amazing as well. We ordered a 1/2 toasted coconut, 1/2 black raspberry chip cake for my daughters' 3rd birthday. I asked them to decorate it with 2 fairies and almost cried at how perfectly it turned out and tasted. Not really "ice cream" First time I have had this product. A friend had a tub on the table for the kiddies at Christmas lunch. After serving the kids and the tub sitting on the counter for 45 minutes the ice cream had not melted and the tub was not attracting condesate on the onside. There is no way real ice cream sits at room temperature for extended periods and retains shape and texture. I speculated that there is definitely an ingredient/element of a hydrogenated oil product contained in Nona's which would account for the conditions I observed. read more

Summary: Great local ice cream. Flavors / Mixes are so good you don't need a sunday (but you should try them too). More: Nona's is great. It has the right feel for a small local ice cream shop. It's located right in the center of Hingham, so getting a ice cream and window shopping / walking around Hingham is a great thing. On cooler summer nights there are a few benches outside and across the street. The ice cream very high quality. Unique ice cream flavors like Hurricane Madeline or Hingham Harbor Sludge show that Nona's isn't just trying to have the same flavors as everyone else. Prices are reasonable, maybe a little on the high side, but the quality of the ice cream makes up for this. read more
