The Beyond Meat and Samosa Veggie side by side spoke to me and I was grateful for the flavors. I didn't expect the Beyond Meat Empanada to be filled with a thick cut slice as the inside of most are blended flavors and ingredients like ones I've had before. Stopped by Nonna's Empanadas while walking through the market in LA and decided to grab a few different flavors to try. Glad I did because every one we ordered was good! We tried the guava, Nutella, ham, and bacon empanadas. The savory ones had a nice balance of filling without feeling too heavy, and the pastry itself was warm and satisfying. The guava was probably my favorite surprise--sweet and fruity without being overly sugary. The Nutella was also a great dessert option, especially while it was still warm. But this time I also got the Cuban. My husband said the Cuban pork was soft and flavorful. He was pleasantly surprised. The beef always hits. We grabbed a 6-pack of empanadas from Nonna's at Grand Central Market last Saturday as appetizers. They have so many cool filling flavors to choose from. We picked the following: 2 Chicken Jalapeño 2 Philly Cheesesteak 2 Strawberry Cheesecake They hooked us up with a $2.26 bundle discount for a total of $34.64 plus tax. Honestly, it still felt a bit pricey for empanadas. On the bright side, they looked beautiful, perfectly golden. They actually stamp the name of the flavor right on each empanada crust, which is super convenient, so you know exactly which one is which. For the taste-wise, the only ones we actually liked were the Philly Cheesesteak empanadas. They were really good and cheesy! This place has so many different flavored empanadas which were super cool, but the ones I tried were pepperoni, Philly cheese steak, and Korean BBQ. They all were savory, tasty, perfect size, and I liked how cheesy the pepperoni and Philly cheese was. However, it's best to be eaten right away when they're fresh and warm so the cheese won't dry up. All came out warm, and the actual dough held up and had a slight crunch first bite. It wasn't doughy and I liked how filled they all were. They definitely don't skimp out on the filling. I didn't expect the Korean bbq one to have ground beef inside (I was expecting actually pieces of meat), but regardless the Korean flavors were there and it really tasted like bulgogi. Located inside the Grand Central Market, I've had Nonna's Empanadas bookmarked on Yelp for a while and finally got the chance to try it the other day when I treated my brother-in-law to lunch. Right away I liked how all the empanadas were lined up in the glass display clearly labeled and nicely organized. The variety of flavors was honestly pretty impressive. I tried my best to skim through all the options, but a line quickly started forming behind us and we had literally just arrived. We both ended up ordering the Combo #1, which comes with two empanadas and a drink. It came out to around $27 total for both of us, which felt like a great price. I chose the KBBQ empanada and the beef empanada, while my brother-in-law ordered the KBBQ and the Cuban empanada. We both really enjoyed the KBBQ one--it was flavorful, moist, warm, and perfectly crispy. I'd definitely come back just for that one again. The beef empanada was alright, but it leaned a bit dry for my taste and I didn't end up finishing it. On the other hand, my brother-in-law said the Cuban empanada was really good--different from what he expected, but in a good way. All the empanadas had a decent amount of filling too and next time I'd love to try one of their sweeter empanada options too. Overall, I'm glad I finally checked this spot out. Was looking for a quick bite at Grand Central Market and came across this place. There was a small line given it was a Sunday, but the service was quick and we got our food very fast. They have a large assortment of different flavor empanadas. Since it was my first time here, I really appreciated that they marked the fan favorites. We got 3 different flavors as part of the Combo meal with a drink (canned soda of your choice). Carne Asada - This was my favorite! Finely ground beef that's well-seasoned, and very saucy and flavorful. I also love that the empanada didn't break apart given how saucy it was. The outside shell was also very well made. Korean BBQ - This was picked out of curiosity since it was a popular one. This tastes like bulgogi, even the seasoning. Definitely saucier than the Carne Asada, but it did get tricky to eat closer to the end. Chicken - Really wanted to try the Chicken Verde but they were sold out so opted for chicken. It's definitely as expected, but I would like to try the popular Chicken Verde next time. While these are a bit pricy at $6 each, the 3 Empanada + Drink Combo does make it a little better. These are also quite substantial so I can't imagine eating more than two, if you're not that hungry, even one might work as a quick snack. We shared the 3 amongst two people. The ambiance is fun and lively if you like people. It can be crowded and annoying at times given it's GCM. Also, if you are new to this area, there's no AC since it's an open space, so on hot days it can be a lot. They do have seating in the back that have a lot more fans above. My wife and I hit up Grand Central Market before a show. We were munchy but not hangry so Nonna's Empanadas was a good choice and the line wasn't long. They have a variety of empanadas to choose from so you're bound to find one that hits the spot for you. We tried the Chicken Jalapeno, Korean BBQ, and Pepperoni empanadas. The Chicken Jalapeno was too dry for us. The Korean BBQ was much better and honestly I wouldn't have thought that Pepperoni would go with empanadas but it did (it's basically a mini-calzone). I walked into the Grand Central Market for the first time this past weekend and was in shock of all the great vendors I saw. Nonna's empanadas smelled so delicious so I install was attracted to them. I decided to stop by and take a look for myself. I was greeted by a nice cashier who let us know what were the most popular choices of empanadas. We had just ate but we decided to try one savory and one sweet option. We ended up going with these choices; 10/10 - Pepperoni: so delicious and so cheesy! Like an upgraded hot pocket. But like way better! lol great taste on the pepperoni and you can tell they use high quality cheese. Great cheese pull! 8/10 banana dulce de leche: a little sweet for me but still very good! I'm a sucker for anything banana so this was a good choice! Over all the market has a variety of vendors but Nonna's sticks out like a sore thumb. The hype is real! I just got the carne asada to try. The employee was really nice - they were supposed to open at 9:30 but there are empanadas ready and he let me order. He warned me that the carne asada was a little spicy and I'm okay with that. He also gave a tapatio hot sauce packet on the side. Nonna's Dulce de Leche empanada has been a go to favorite of mine for yearrrrs. I just can't get enough of that sweet, caramely, warm goodness when it's fresh. I love it even more the next day with coffee. Just pop it in the toaster oven and the branded golden pastry calls your name. Ugh, so good. I have tried several of the savory flavors. I counted something like 50 different choices. And when I ordered two of them (the Cuban and the Korean BBQ), I was surprised. I had expected them to have a lot of crust and not a lot of filling. But it turned out that both were absolutely stuffed to capacity, so the crust to filling ratio was excellent. Even better, the fillings themselves were very good. The Cuban in particular was flavorful, with a smoky pork center. I went away both pleased and pretty satisfied. Would two make a full meal? Well, I suppose on how hungry you are. Stopped by Nonna's Empanadas during a morning visit to Grand Central Market before heading out to a Dodgers game. First off, the place was super clean and well-kept, which always sets a good tone. Right in front of the shop, there's a cool mural of Shohei Ohtani, which immediately caught my eye. They have a huge selection of empanadas, everything from sweet options like Nutella to savory, meaty fillings like beef or salsa verde chicken. I went with the salsa verde chicken, and even though it looked a bit dry at first glance, it totally surprised me. It was super juicy, flavorful, and had just the right amount of spice. Since I was planning to snack around the market, I only had one , but it left me wanting more. The staff was really friendly too. Four stars for the following reasons: 1. The fabulous mural facing Nonna's in the Grand Central Market. You find Nonna's and the mural in the second room (if you came off Angels Flight) of a multi room massive food court. The mural is a delight. 2. The service. It pains me to say this, but they have really undermined the experience and convenience of the Nonna's by replacing human ordering with a kiosk, to a surprisingly detrimental degree. The line, as always, wraps around the empanada display. Where all customers can clearly see the empanadas. Previously after standing in the line, observing all options of hot ready to eat empanadas, customers approached a staff member ready to take their order with speed and efficiency. Now, after standing in the same line, customers approach a kiosk where they can continue to look through options to the hearts' content. In theory this kiosk could be faster, but as my experience just proved, some customers do not feel the same necessity to make an efficient decision with a kiosk. I just witnessed one couple spend a real 5 minutes scrolling up and down the same list. A line that would have taken 5 minutes, took 20 to get through. As a local repeat customer, this change has me questioning if Nonna's will continue to be as quick, predictable, and reliable as I have known it to be. Not only that, but I witnessed directly as I waited in line, two couples actually give up and walk away. While I appreciated my upgrade in line, I regretted that their money would not be going to Nonna. Had an employee taken everyone's order, it's clear that those 4 additional empanadas, easily totaling $24, could have easily actually paid for an employee's entire hourly wage to take more orders faster. I'm not certain I am witnessing a positive turn in Nonna's business. I hope this message reaches leadership for them to actually look at the losses this kiosk will have on their business.
