Fantastic flavors and the portions are generous; at least by my observation of LA standards. I had the Criolla and spicy pollo. Both make me wish they had a spot at home. We have unrivaled Latin cuisines at home, including Colombian, Cuban, and Puerto Rican, but Argentinian seems less prominent. The owner Roque is a really genuine and thoughtful guy. He lit up when I told him my first and probably last (for a while) visit was delicious. That's how you know you're in for a treat; when someone who's been in this business 30+ years is just as excited as the first time when you commend their craft. Absolutely delicious empanadas in the area! We stopped by on a Wednesday afternoon and we were the only customers at that time. We were greeting by a friendly staff member, perhaps the owner, who helped us with our empanada selection. We got spicy chicken, spicy beef, corn, and criolla empanadas. I strongly recommend the Criolla empanada, which is the most traditional, Argentinian empanada. It has ground beef, raisins, eggs, green onions, and spices. It was absolutely delicious and, when I go back, I will select this empanada!! I also recommend the corn empanadas (humita), especially if you're looking for a vegetarian option. It has corn, melted mozzarella, and white sauce. So delicious! I got these to go, but there are cute tables indoors and outdoors if you want to enjoy your empanadas there. Best empanadas in Southern California. Venice is not very close for us, but when we are on the west side we will make a special trip out to Empanada's Place. We were in the area Saturday and had to stop by to pick up a dozen for some friends. Immediately after we dropped them off they called to ask where we got them. If you go do yourself a favor and just get a dozen. You can freeze them and have them for a treat. You can't go wrong with any of the fillings, but there is a beef and lemon one that is amazing. We so much love going to Empanada's Place. We have been going for years and it never disappointments. The owner is usually there, but all of the staff is the best. I loved the Argentine empanada I ate in Miami so much that I Googled to find a similar place in LA, and I found one. Empanada's Place is a small shop on Sawtelle at Venice Blvd that has been there since 1985! It's a charming spot, and you instantly feel you're no longer in the United States. The host/manager/owner is a lovely, hospitable man. I ordered a beef empanada, hoping it would be good. It certainly was. He also treated me to a fresh, delicious cookie called ALFAJOR, for dessert. While waiting for my empanada, I looked around the quaint little cafe and stopped by the shelves showcasing items from Argentina. Something caught my eye, but I wasn't sure what it tasted like, so I asked the host how they eat it, what they eat it with, and if he had an open one in the kitchen I could try. OMG! It was heavenly, and I bought a jar on the spot. It's called San Ignacio Dulce de Leche, and I included a picture in case you're a fan of caramel and would love a milk caramel spread. I love empanadas and wanted to see if this place lived up to the great reviews. The gentleman taking the orders was super nice and threw in a little something on the house. While the empanadas are $7.50 each, they are large and packed pretty well. Unfortunately that's where it ends... I tried four different kinds (cheese and potato, beef, criolla and chicken) and while they tasted fresh, they just didn't have a lot of flavor. I was also a little disappointed that they were fried instead of baked. They don't compare to the empanadas at El Gaucho market in North Redondo Beach, which has been my go to spot for empanadas for a while. Now those are super flavorful. I was a bit surprised by the price, but I also acknowledge that this might be necessary given the realities of inflation right now. I was extremely grateful for the server's kind offering of a free empanada to try since it was my first time! Note that the store is cash only, which, while being right next to a gas station with an ATM, was still quite inconvenient. Definitely a bonafide mom and pop store, but worthwhile for a hearty lunch or takeout (note that the shop is not open past 7pm and closes at 6pm on Sundays). The empanadas I tried were delicious! Each empanada is generously filled and full of flavor. Spicy chicken is shredded chicken with tomatoes, onions, and peppers (reminded me of chicken tinga). Arabe is ground beef with onions and spices (lemon flavor is bright and balanced). Spinach is the best and not overpowered by cheese. Despite being fried, they weren't oily. The crust seals in the juices and flakey. Raffi, the owner, was so sweet to offer me an alfajore on the house! He made sure I was taken care of without doting too much. He offered to go containers in case I wanted it, and their spicy sauce (like a very liquidity salsa). He suggested other breakfast options like Jelly Donut and YumYum (he recommended their ham and egg sandwich and gave an approving whistle). The space is incredibly cute and well-kept. The walls are adorn with pictures, little knickknacks from Argentina, and beloved plants make the space appear more welcoming and personable. Even the table linens matched the winter holiday season! I came in as they opened and waited a little less than 15 minutes for my order. $7/empanada is steep but well worth it. They are cash only, so please remember to tip! read more

Small family owned place with a cozy small interior consisting of 5 bistro type tables for 2 people inside and 2 outside. Most people probably get to-go since the place is so small. But this place is on legit. Flaky and crispy outside crust, delicious fillings. Empanadas cost more but they are also a little bigger. We tried three Empanadas while we were there and took home another dozen. Dont expect superior service.
