The store is one of the more basic stores in the area. It doesn't carry some of the more expensive brands like the Stanford or San Francisco stores, but for a Nordstrom you can bring your kids and your dog to run around, which seems to be what most people do, its fine. It's not really a store where you can run in for basics, but to find trendy clothing you likely wouldn't hold onto for long, this is your place. Customer Service here doesn't seem to be what it used to be. If you couldn't find something in your size, in the old days they'd try to locate it for you, but now if you ask a salesperson to do that, they act put out. Apparently, the customer service which made Nordstrom such an outstanding shopping experience is a thing of the past. I took my mother to Nordstrom in the Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo on Friday afternoon. She wanted to check out some shoes. When we arrived at the shoe department, two customers were being assisted by a sales representative. Three other sales people were standing off to the side in conversation. After about ten minutes of walking around trying to find the right size shoe, I looked over at the three salesmen who were talking. Only then did one of them come over to offer assistance. At first, he seemed to know the products. My mother explained the type of shoe she wanted, as well as the size. He immediately mentioned the name brand she would need for her unique shoe size. He went to the back and returned with three boxes. My mother, who is 88 years old, sat down to try them on. At no point did the salesman offer to assist her with removing her shoes or putting on the new shoes. When it was clear that she was having difficulty, I asked the salesman if he could get a shoehorn. He did. Instead of assisting her to get the shoe on at that point, he simply handed my mother the shoe horn. There was nothing about this young man that indicated that he cared about my mother's needs. In fact, he didn't even seem to care about making a sale at all. My mother has done most of her shopping at Nordstrom for the past thirty years. She is quite familiar with what I would call "the Nordstrom difference." Well, that difference no longer exists. We may as well have been shopping at Marshall's. Nordstrom used to be my go-to but asking for help is like asking to win the lottery. I was holding 12 dresses, heavy dresses, am 8 months pregnant and in dire need for items to wear to upcoming events (those who have had to shop during pregnancy know how difficult that can be) and received no help, no hello, no offer for a fitting room, nothing. During my try on session, I found 8 great options however no one ever checked in on me or asked if I needed other sizes (I did) but as soon as I walked out with more than a few items in my hand, the girls were quick to approach. I decided to drop the items and order online to avoid giving the store or employees commission or my revenue. This isn't new behavior and I already know I should expect sub par customer service by now but I'm officially done with this location. read more

After my initial review I was contacted by the manager at this Nordstrom location to come in so that they can could tell me about all the new stuff ...or something like that? I couldn't really understand what I was being invited in for. An apology and acknowledgement of my experience would have sufficed, quite honestly. In fact, the manager didn't even address my concerns or issues. I was the one who had to bring it up and mention how upset I was at how I was treated and that I expected more of Nordstrom... Anyway, I couldn't make it in during this "event" and the manger asked me to call him when I wanted to come in so I could see all the "new" stuff. I haven't called. I don't feel comfortable going in to have product pushed on me when I can't even get a decent apology or acknowledgement. This is the worst Nordstrom store I have ever been to. The women that work the cosmetics counter are not only downright unhelpful they look down their nose at you. The one exception is the lady who staffs the Kiehls counter. Ive already sent a complaint to Nordstrom but they don't seem to care. In particular I would like to call out an Asian lady, HANNA, WHO WAS DOWNRIGHT RUDE to my 70-year old mother who bought a gift from Dior. She let HANNA know, and HANNA thrust a box and tissue paper at her and said here you go. My Mom asked her, aren't you going to put it in the box and HANNA had the audacity to tell her, well you can do it as well! Nordstrom - is this deplorable attitude and behavior towards your customers what you stand by? I'd go so far as to say that it feels as if the women in cosmetics are racist because the moment someone Caucasian comes up the fake smiles and groveling, high pitched voices get turned on. Any Nordstroms store is nice, that's a given. They pride themselves in their customer service. I personally love this Nordstroms because I never had an issue with the staff. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Nordstroms definitely has held up to their standard and their mission. If you like to have easier access to solely Nordstroms, I suggest to park in the back of the entire Hillsdale mall structure. Why did i give this store only 4 stars? Hm, because the staff in in the women shoe department seems to be all over the place this particular day. There were a lot of staff on the floor but not all of them would assist the customers. There was a man by the computer, now an iPad, and would ask if someone needed a salesperson. WTH? You're standing right there, why couldn't you do it? This visit was bad from beginning to end. I needed to return items and it was the closest to my location. The associate, Malinda, did not say one word to my daughter or I. We were returning activewear purchased online - and a lot of the items were too big. She touched each of items, never even asking why we were returning them. When she was done - she handed the receipt to me and that was it. I take back my previous comment, she did ask me to sign for receipt. Our next stop was the shoe department. My daughter found a shoe she wanted to try on. It took 15 minutes before Angelyne asked if we needed help. Meanwhile, I had found a shoe I was interested. Even when she brought back my daughter's shoes, she didn't stop long enough to see if I needed help. While my daughter was trying On her pair, Angelyne , never came back, nor did any other associates come by to ask if we needed help. I had the shoe (Adidas Stan Smith) in my hand the whole time. There was even a young man with a man bun who stalked another woman "do you need help?" When the woman demurred, the associate said "I SAW you with a shoe in your hand." Anyway, you could say that if I needed help, I should have flagged someone down, but I figure - I was only interested in trying on the shoe, I never got the help to even help me purchase the pair. I always thought Nordstrom was a store that prided itself for its customer service. read more

This Nordstrom has less high-end stuff than their other locations- not that that's my section- but I do love to peruse and see how the other half live and occasionally fall in love with things outside of my means. San Mateo's Nordstrom is actually pretty blue collar for a Nordies. I love that they offer a lot of Leith brand clothing that they show online, unlike the fancier locations. The staff here are friendly but not pushy and they do an excellent job of making sure racks are pristine. Every time I've been in I've seen people walking around QA-ing the displays and making sure no stone goes unturned when it comes to showcasing they stuff. I do wish then had a more adventurous shoe collection, but I guess my wallet will be just fine with what they have. read more

May and Savannah deserve a raise because they are the most sweet kind workers i've met at Nordstrom. A week from my graduation i ordered a dress and i was told by a worker 3 days. It was behind schedule and got lost. I called and May and Savannah understood the task and cared so much. I was so worried but they assured me they were going to do everything in their power to make sure i had a dress for my graduation. They put two different colored dresses on hold in store and ordered the same dress online again for 1 day shipping. When i went in store to see the dresses all the other workers were a bit rude and unhelpful until i found May and she was so sweet. They got my dress in time for graduation and to anyone who has an issue i'm sure they would actually pay you some attention. read more

This Nordstrom has potential to excel in customer service. Unfortunately my experiences here have not been up to par. This past weekend i was checking out the La Mer counter, looking at some new face cream to try. I've seen and heard good reviews from others in the past, and decided to finally get some samples and give it a shot. The girl at the counter approached me and I told her I had oily skin. She recommend one particular one, and already had a sample ready. I saw another one that I wanted (so i can compare), and i got the impression she was hesitant to give me a sample, but she did. Finally I wanted to try their eye cream, and the bottle was empty. Our exact conversation went as followed: Me: oh the bottle is empty. Do you have more? Her: Yeah, we ran out of the samples of that one. Me: Can you make another one so I can get a sample? Her: we only do sample restocks on Sunday's So you mean to tell me, I have to come back the next day just to get a sample of eye cream, because you cant make one right now? I get it, your not getting a commission from me today, because all I want are samples. But if you seriously wanted a customer who would return, you would go the extra mile and just make one. I swear this place needs a face lift in their customer service department. Reps usually walk away from the floor when they see people needing help, or no one is available in most departments. And to the girl at the La Mer counter, I would have came back and bought something for you, but honestly you really don't deserve my business. I'll take it to someone who actually enjoys their job. But when I paid they tried to hand me my white dress without a bag. -_- and then said oh for a bag that's 10 cents, this was after I had swiped my card and everything. As I approached the wallet section, the sales associate in the handbags/wallets department greeted me. This was a nice change from my experience at the Valley Fair location. I was wearing jeans and a T-shirt at both locations, but I didn't feel invisible here. Nice to know my clothing choices didn't scare this sales associate away. She showed me the wallets, and I found a Lodis credit card case in black. This associate was friendly, and at checkout she thanked everybody for shopping here. When a customer near me told the sales associate that she was just browsing, she smiled and said,"Let me know if you need anything." On my way to the cafe, I saw a Pomeranian stuffed animal as I walked by the Girls' section, and the sales associate nearby greeted me. When I went to purchase this plush animal (I cannot resist fluffy plush animals), this same associate was my cashier. She asked me if I wanted to open a Nordstrom credit card account, and told me to have a great day as she handed my purchase to me. Very clean bathrooms - made me feel like I was in a palace! Parking gets crazy, so I park by Sears when I come to Hillsdale. read more

Id rather given ZERO stars... My mother and I have spent tens of thousands of dollars with Nord. over the years. We've loved shopping there! I recently received a high end watch as a gift from her and after wearing it a couple times found it to be too heavy and not for me. I took this watch into Nordstrom at Hillsdale and spoke with Caylyn the jewelry dept mgr. to see if they would possibly credit my mother's Nord. acct. To my disappointment Caylyn was condescending, dismissive and unwilling to work with us in any way. All she was willing to do was repeatedly spit out rhetoric about the "new company policy". It's not surprising given she acted very young and seemingly inexperienced in good client service. Caylyn has alienated loyal, longtime lovers of Nordstrom due to her arrogant and dismissive attitude. I later took the watch to a different Nord. location where a friendly associate happily credited my Mother's acct. Appropriately without digging their heals in like a child. She was lovely. Maybe after a little more experience working with the public and better training in retail, Caylyn will choose her battles more wisely. read more

went in with an objective to purchase a pair of TOMS. For a saturday, the mall was crowded and there was lots of traffic, so is Nordstrom! The juniors section on the 3rd floor were much noisier than usual, if you were to come in on a weekday. I searched for the TOMS table, it took me a while, than I realized that it was the table with the most people crowded over it. Picked up the Navy colored classics and immediately a young lady approach me and asked if I needed a size. And off she goes to the stockroom. Within minutes she was back with 5 boxes. She explained that these shoes were all very popular, so she brought out the other colors for me to try on too, and if i like it, i should purchase them now because they will eventually run out of stock. She brought me the red, grey, navy, black, and a dark greenish color. I tried on the red, navy and black and decided to purchase the navy ones. Awesome customer service i gotta say. She was patient and very helpful. At the end, she also asked if I prefer to pay at the cashier or their check -out electronic pad. I said it doesnt matter, so I ended up purchasing my pair of shoes sitting down at a comfy chair, signing my purchase away, and left like a happy camper. keep up the great customer service Nordstrom! read more

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Nordstrom. The reason why I am writing a review today is because of the poor customer service I received while I was there today. My mom purchased some bags online through my online Nordstrom account. She was buying them as gifts. Unfortunately, she was at a meeting and wanted me to go pick them up. I went there to pick them up and the employee (an older African woman, wearing her Burberry scarf and a maxi skirt) asks me for my ID and the credit card. I didn't have the credit card, because (obviously) my mom paid for it. Even though I showed her the confirmation and the fact that it was purchased through my account, she said I needed my mom to come and pick it up. This was really frustrating, but I drove back to San Francisco to get my mom so she could come and pick up her items. We got there and another employee went to go get our items without asking for this information. Then, the older African woman saw me and started telling the other woman helping us out to check for ID and the credit card in a very firm tone of voice. My mom got frustrated and let them know that she sent me to pick them up. My mom normally talks really loud when she's frustrated, but she didn't say anything mean to the older woman. The older African woman gets just as loud telling my mom that it's the policy and that's how things go. I had to stop it before it got too heated. Now, I understand that there is a policy. I am totally fine with the policy. Nordstrom just needs to make sure all their employees follow it because they do not. Other employees at this store (and others), haven't made such a big deal about everything. What I did not appreciate was the employee getting really loud and shutting my mom down. She did not listen to what she had to say and really did not care what she was saying. Even if this was the case, she should not have shown it. It's TERRIBLE customer service. The other woman who helped us was not like that, which was great. I won't be coming down to this Nordstrom anytime soon. I'll be going to the other locations in San Francisco. If I come here again, I will definitely be avoiding the older African woman in the handbags department. read more

Grey? Brown? Grey? Brown? Much to the dismay of my gf's cat, I have trouble telling these two colors apart. But the bigger question might be, is it spelled "grey" or "gray"? I may have difficulty with grey and brown, but I can most surely tell the difference between brown and black. The problem is I am a fan of both colors and whenever I find a pair of shoes I like in either of these colors I MUST always buy them in both brown and black. Nordstom is a solid choice when shopping for shoes. Their selection is always fresh and up to date and always do a great job in keeping the latest styles in stock. The staff is beyond helpful and don't make fun of the fact that I have boats for feet and they require a size that is larger than most. They are also good listeners but always eager to offer good advice and make sure that they don't sell me something I don't like. Some might argue that the downtown location or even Palo Alto is better. And in some ways they are as Hillsdale is a bit dated, but you cannot argue the fact that finding parking is a breeze, even during the Holidays when the City is crazy and Stanford Mall is a traffic nightmare. Psst, just in case you are in the mood for a hot cocoa. You can geta Mexican hot chocolate on the 2nd floor from inside the mall entrance. read more

I'm a fan of Nordstrom's alone, because they've got quality clothes that last. I also like them a lot because at almost any of their store locations, I can trust that someone will be there to help. I've had people help me pick out clothes, help me in the fitting room, and also help me figure out which shoes or purse I should get next. You'd think that if someone wanted to sell you something, you would find this type of customer service any where goods were sold, but you don't; or at least not that often. So this is what I love about Nordstroms... going in and knowing that I will be taken care of by somebody that cares or at least by somebody that has the motivation to work a little to sell the customer something! I love the good work ethics and quality customer service training that goes into their employees at some point, otherwise, it wouldn't be so prevalent.. and I really appreciate it and their merchandise! read more

What can I say more to add to my appreciation to Nordstrom? Maybe another 5-star review? After going there two days in a row this weekend and received excellent service from different stations there (clothing, accessories and shoes), I just had to repeat my review again with similar experiences. Everyone working there is so helpful; it's like their job there is to make you happy and get what you want. I don't even go browsing other stores at the mall. I just park on the parking structure at the lot that's right in front of Nordstorm's own exit, walk right in there, grab a few clothes, try it on, get some help and advice, pay for it, and off I'm gone. I thought to myself, the service here and that at Macy's is totally like day and night. Why would I even bother to have shopped at Macy's before? The ladies who helped me yesterday were: Precious, Sequoya S, Johnelle. Thank you especially to Sequoya S for your great help and fashion advice and patiently wait for me to change and try on different belts and jewelries that would work with my new dress. You wouldn't believe that's her first day working there; it felt like she's been working at for a long time and knew exactly what to do to make customers satisfied. The ladies who helped today at Studio 21, and the lady downstairs at the shoe department were also very helpful. I was too tired to get their names after all this shopping. I always end up walking out there with my hands full of shopping bags from Nordstrom and spending more than I had thought I would. But I was happy that I got great quality stuff there that would make me look good and also would last for a long time. It totally makes business sense what they are doing right? read more

Someone should break this up into different departments, since I feel like it's a little unfair to shittily rate the entire store for one shitty department. The cosmetics department, that is. And even more specifically than that, the MAC counter. Maybe it's that my face is so utterly offensive that nobody at the counter feels like any of their products could possibly help, but I do wish they'd at least try. I'm not even kidding, I've never felt I possessed a more uncanny ability to be ignored as I do when I try to buy makeup at the Hillsdale Nordies MAC. Yeah, they'll tend to the 75-year-old looking for electric blue eyeshadow, and the 19-year-old whose eyebrows have had an unfortunate run-in with a 5-blade Gillette and a Sharpie, but I can easily be left to stand there for 20-minutes, while I try to not look like a giant asshole and pray for someone to slip up and glance my way so that I can silently plead with my offensive-looking eyes for a little help. As much of a p.i.t.a. as I can be, this is one place where I'm always sure the service I receive has nothing to do with how I behave (and maybe everything to do with how I look?!). Anyhow, If I do get someone to come over, it's basically "What do you need?", then they hand me something, snatch my credit card, and all but put their stylish boot up near my sphincter. Meanwhile, they've taken the time to sit her down and turn grandma into a mature prostitute, and are buffing away layers of Sharpie eyebrows to plaster on some new ones. When I heard you had to try on 15 pairs of jeans before you finally know which one to buy, I almost pooped in my pants. I thought, damn I gotta walk all over this dang mall just to find 15 different jeans to try on? WRONG. This place has a gazillion different jeans all under one roof! There are tons of different brands and each brand has tons of different styles, boot cut, straight, relaxed, and every type of "wash" in known history of mankind. To me, wash is like Asians.... they look kinda different, but they all look the same. It was all fun and games until we hit the cash register... Four hundred bucks for TWO jeans? WTF WTF WTF? Geez, I better now have enough game for 15 innings of baseball, 6 quarters of football *and* the freggin' Ironman triathalon. I just pooped in my pants. But Nordstroms is great for two reasons: 1. Great return policy. If you wake up from your pot-smokin' delusions, you can always return stuff. 2. Nordstrom Rack. Same stuff, half price. Next review? Da Rack? Likely. Five stars for being able to do all your jeans shopping under one roof and a great return policy. And the poor guy who had to put back 13 pairs of jeans. Sorry buddy. read more

My LEAST FAVORITE Nordstrom in the Bay Area! Let me preface this review by saying that I am truly a "Nordies Girl". I have vivid memories of shopping there as a child, shop there frequently, worked there during undergrad & law school and am a Nordstrom cardholder. With that said, I would like to emphasize my total distain for Hillsdale Nordstrom. I find myself at this location more frequently than I'd like because I work in Redwood Shores. In a perfect world, Hillsdale Nordstrom would see exactly 0 of my hard earned dollars. CUSTOMER SERIVCE. I'll just go ahead and be blunt here, the customer service SUCKS. It never ceases to amaze me how poorly I am treated almost every time I walk into this store--and by poorly treated, I mean COMPLETED IGNORED. Whether its in women's shoes, jewelry, TBD or Saavy the lack of customer service is appalling (this does not apply to the girls at MAC who are consistently friendly, engaging and attentive). Anyone who has shopped at this location knows they're not terribly busy during the week, which makes the staff's inability/unwillingness to offer any sort of meaningful customer service that much more ridiculous. About a year ago I found myself wandering around the dress department for nearly 15 minutes without once being asked if I needed help, despite the fact that there were 3 employees in the department. After letting myself in to my own fitting room, I approached the counter in order to see if a dress I had tried on could be located in another store. While at the counter I mentioned to the girls standing there talking about their weekend plans how annoyed I was that no one offered to help me. One of the girls rudely replied, "Well I'm on my lunch break". Ridiculous. As mentioned, I use to work at Nordstrom, and it is strictly against company policy for associates to be "on the floor" while on break. Annoyed by the lack of customer service and totally pissed off by the curt response I went upstairs to speak with the store manager who had left the store by that time. I was promised by a customer service rep that the manager would call me the next day. I'm still waiting for that call.... SELECTION. Meh. San Francisco, Valley Fair and even Stanford have a better selection of pretty much everything. I tend to only go to this store when I'm either in a bind and need something quick, or have already checked online that a particular item I am looking for is in fact in the store. After twice in one week going to Nordstrom's Hillsdale, trying to spend some money on specific items in the cosmetic dept., I was unable to find the items. I even went so far as to check online to make certain that they were in stock at Hillsdale, and could pick up today. Unfortunately, that was not the case and I walked away empty handed. Will go to Stanford next week where the cosmetic dept is fully stocked. One reason that I wasn't able to make one of the purchases was because the cosmetic company did not supply "testers" which means that one can't see what the shade would look like before making a purchase. The store won't use one of the products in stock as a tester, they say they can't do that. The other items, were simply not on stock at the store. I was also told that one reason why the displays look so empty, is because of theft at this position at the front entrance. I asked why they don't move the line to another area, I was told because the company paid extra to be at that position. So that's it! Doesn't make a lot of sense but then I'm not a marketing person. The other complaint I have is that I was looking for a new fragrance. I had to ask if someone could help me. The woman that did come forward showed me one fragrance that I did not like. When I explained the type of scent I was looking for, she showed me one that she did give me a very small sample of so I could see how I like it. I asked if she had anything else, she pointed to the wall of fragrances and that was it, I can't see why anyone would want to buy anything, when it feels as you are wasting their time. I did look around a bit more and it seemed as if this sales person was happier talking among the other salespersons, than taking time to help a customer. I will continue shopping at Stanford where they go out of their way to help customers in Nordstrom, Neiman's and Bloomingdales, Sad to see Hillsdale going downhill( the department stores) need to do better read more

What can I say? It's your high end Macy's. Went there for their anniversary sale, let me tell you, there were a ton of people!!!!!!! Even though there were thousands of people, I still got a sales rep, even though the shoe we wanted wasn't in stock, the lady ordered it for us. But getting the shoes sent to your house..... hmm.... received shoes, one size was 37... the other was 38.5 SERIOUSLY, ARE you kidding me? Too bad I'm not rating their distribution center. read more

Yet again another unsatisfactory men's shopping experience at Nordstrom. This is the third time in a row. Their salespeople are not helpful. Even my son noticed it. Our next stop was a skateboard shop which had much more helpful salespeople. Next time I am shopping Macy's. read more

Nordstroms is my fave department store of all time. But this location is wack. No one was trying to help me out, I was ignored in the shoe department and at pov. Is this a norcal thing? when i was paying at the register the girl kept asking if i wanted a bag. What the deuce--I purchased two sweaters. Nordstrom is awesome. I've been shopping there for years, and while it's expensive, the customer service is amazing. Excellent makeup counter! And I love the shoe department and ladies' apparel. Oh, and the cafe right next to the juniors' department is cool, too. Check out Nordstrom!! read more
