For the last few years or so, I've been wearing mainly heels to work. But transitioning to a new work environment requiring some walking on a campus with a bit of an incline on site, I decided to look for some new flats to add to my shoe collection. I'm already a fan of DSW, whether seeking sandals, pumps, or sneakers for running. On my recent visit, their selection of professional footwear did not disappoint. I found about 6-7 I liked, only 3 of those had my size, so I ended up purchasing those three (brands including Dr. Scholl's, Kelly & Katie, and Anne Klein), which was ideal, preventing me from overspending. I prefer simple and comfortable when it comes to shoes, nothing flashy, and DSW usually has good options. This store, in particular, stood out during my recent visit. It's the first two-story DSW I've been to. And everything was clean and organized, well stocked for the most part. Not to mention, they had great purses on display too (more than I've seen at other locations of this chain). There was hardly a wait for service to make my purchase on Tuesday afternoon. And staff was helpful and efficient at the register, which I appreciated. I went looking for shoes at Hillsdale Mall. Good luck getting a salesperson to wait on you. I came across the street to DSW. Many of the same styles were sold here. Staff were really helpful and friendly. They even price matched a price I saw on their website that was different than in the store. Staff is very kind and personable. Always helpful when shopping for shoes. On this day, I was picking up an online order, and happened to accidentally try on and buy another pair of shoes while I was there. This store is addicting! Always great deals. Just be aware if you're here on a super nice and sunny Bay Area day. The upstairs area gets a little warm, which can impact your shoe shopping experience! Back in the day, I used to live at DSW. The clearance racks were my jam. I recall buying a pair of Gucci pumps in 2007 for about $70. That was in SF. I don't frequent DSW as much as I used to, but I have come to this location for returns and order pick ups. The staff seem to be efficient. I rarely wait in line. Plus, they seem competent. The returns and pick ups have been seamless. Everything appears to be organized, too. I don't really have any complaints. I have been a rewards member for a while, yet the guy attempting to assist me couldn't manage to locate my rewards account...I never has an issue in the past. My absolute favorite shoe store in that you can take your time and find the shoe you are looking for, etc. The selection is huge and you can easily find shoes that are on clearance if you're looking for a bargain. The Saucony's are one of my favorite shoes for working out. I jump rope and do alternate stair climbing workouts to keep in shape. The shoes make all the difference in the world when working out as your feet deserve the best where comfort is concerned. The staff here are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Having worked at a busy shoe store in my younger days I like this approach where you pick and choose without taking needing a salesperson. I have fun finding exactly what I want on my own. There is only two worthy associates at the cashier counter. The rest are shiftless game players at soon to be known as DSW/Dirty Shoes Worn. I have been battling to get three pairs of shoes returned in the correct size, in new condition and sometime this month. I walked in the store requesting my shoes which the surly clerk stated she couldn't find them until one clerk coming from upstairs walked over looked again and behold there they were this girl flat out lied. Luckily I checked them out they were dirty inside and out, stretched out and had dirty soles, if that's not enough they are 3 sizes too big. If they would hire mature competent workers instead of hellbent low lives to work the registers life would've smooth for customers and the profit of DSW better. After multiple emails with corporate I went directly to the Hillsdale store for return/exchange. The staff and management were extremely helpful and reordered the shoe for me in store which arrived correctly. DSW is one of the few stores I still enjoy in-person shopping at. This location however does not provide a well-rounded shopping experience. The store is divided half and half between men's and women's shoes. The women's section was composed almost entirely of sneakers and casual Birkenstock/Teva type sandals. There were maybe 6-7 pairs of dressier wedge heels at the front of the store, but I did not see any other heels or more formalwear anywhere around the store. read more

A couple examples 1) Advertise Birkenstock for example, but had a single model in 2 color with less that 10 boxes of shoes. Walked in at 7:30pm no hello or welcome in. Tried on a few shoes and at 8:03pm a rude worker or manager basically bitched us out of the store stating they were closed. So much attitude, understandable as the store closed at 8pm but, what's with the hostility I came in at 7:30. Asked me if I was purchasing the shoes I was holding and I said yes, she responded by saying "you should head over because we are closing." There's a lack of customer service within this place. I've always liked DSW, but I can easily say goodbye to the San Mateo location now. 1. Went in to purchase some shoes with the new year promo ($10 off $49, etc.) advertised on their website. At checkout, I noticed the associate didn't apply the promo and asked why, she said I need to have a bar code in the email in order to apply the discount. She didn't check my membership either (I'm VIP gold). I told her the website didn't say anything about the bar code and says the promo is both in store and online. She insisted with a rude attitude that she won't do it, so I left empty handed with an hour wasted. Once home, I checked with customer service online, and they were very helpful, so I got a pair of toddler sneaker. 2. The sneaker arrived, but it's a size too small. I went to the store to do an exchange. They only have the shoes in a different color, so I took it to check out. Well, guess what, the associate wouldn't do it either, saying it needs to be the exact same item, including color. I showed her the exchange policy on the website, it states "exchange can be done for the same item but in different color or sizes". She then asked another associate, F. The associate F was very rude saying she won't do it either, and I will lost the coupon even if I do an exchange. I told her they've always be able to do the credit for an exchange. She asked me to call the customer service, I called and they confirmed that I should be able to exchange with the applied credit, associate F refused to talk to the customer service personnel and asked I just buy it with the customer service. In the end, I returned my last purchase and placed another new order with credit applied with the online service. Extremely rude associates, completely waste of my time. I called customer service and they said they wouldn't handle this until they launched their own investigation taking 10-15 business days. Me and my daughter came to shop and spend some moolah. We love shoes & in this whole entire two-story building complete with escalators. There's not one bathroom available to the public. ! No one asked if we needed help and every person we asked for help was extremely rude non-helpful. No personality I mean the only conclusion I can come to is they were HARD UP when they did the hiring give me a break. I was never a DSW customer until I learned that the stores carry children's shoes. My two grandchildren are hard on shoes and seem to need at least one new pair every few months. DSW has a good selection. The Hillsdale store has an even larger selection as it is a two-story building, with children's shoes and clearance on the second floor. Because the store is spacious, and the children's shoes on one side of the store, away from the adult shoes, my grandchildren are free to roam and look to their heart's content for shoes and socks. There are no sales clerks in this store, so be prepared to do your own measuring, hunting, and perhaps even scavenging to find the right shoes that match. Check out here is just like at the Fresno store, near the door with a serpentine line for customers. I hate these kinds of lines and they seem to be in every big box store now. An like in Fresno, there is one clerk. Perhaps they add more clerks on weekends. My goal is to never go on a weekend. Parking is easy on a weekday afternoon. read more

I'm really loving DSW's curbside pick up/returns/exchanges, but there could be better quality control. We picked up a pair of shoes for our son only to find out that they were 2 completely different sizes, adding additional time to our day to come back and exchange them. Michelle the manager on staff was completely unprofessional and rude. I think that someone needs to retake their compliance and customer service training. Normally I am a huge DSW fan and always have pleasant experiences shopping at the San Mateo location. My latest trip was different. I visited the location this past weekend. Everything went smoothly until the checkout. When I asked the sales person Fideliea ? why my online coupon doesn't work on my purchases (converse shoes), she absolutely lost her patience and raised her voice at me. I was so shocked and disappointed by her behavior, I didn't know how to respond. I then asked for her name and ask to speak to a manger , she shouted" I am the manger."  I was absolutely appalled why she acted in this unprofessional way. I will give her benefit of doubt that maybe she is having a bad day. But she has no right to treat customers this way. NEGATIVE STARS! I was looking for a specific pair of black Hush Puppies shoes to buy for my husband. My husband called around and every store pointed him to this store. He called this store and the girl that picked up the phone put him on hold for an extremely long time and later told him that she looked in the back, front, and all over the store and was not able to locate the shoes. I, then, checked their website and it clearly states they have the shoes at this location so I decided to call the store. The girl who answered the phone puts me on hold for not even 5 minutes and was able to locate the exact shoe, size, and color that I inquired about. She even put it on hold for me. I informed my husband that the shoes are on hold at that location and he can pick it up anytime within the next two days. When my husband went to the store to picked up the shoes, he was greeted with unwelcoming attitude and racism. The moment he walked in, the manager rudely asked him "Do you have a question?" He informed her that there are some shoes on hold under my name that he is purchasing. The manager went to look for them but kept saying the wrong names. My husband told her the name three times and not once did she get it right. She, then, told him that there was no shoes on hold under that name. He asked her who picks up the phones there and a girl named Bella came over and asked my husband "Oh did she called?" He told her yes and she went to another shelf and pulled out the shoes. When Bella rang up the shoes, she tried to charge my husband full price but he informed her that on the website the shoes was on sale. She showed irritation when asked for a price match and proceeded to continuously asked if the sale price is for the black Hush Puppies in which it was. She eventually price matched the shoes. My husband asked her "Why when I called about the shoes you told me you can't find them but when my wife called, you found them?" Bella choked and had nothing to say. He just left the store after. I am in an interracial relationship and I feel like Bella was being racist towards my husband. The staff didn't want to assist him with retrieving the items he was there for. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and no human being deserves to be treated this way. I think they need to be retrained on how to be professional to people from all different cultures. read more

Here's a very large DSW. They have high ceilings and a second floor as well. I thought the layout was very nice and conducive to good shopping. The brands here are varied. I see brands like Tahari, Coach, Michael Kors, Sperry, etc. I would recommend avoiding the Aubrey Brooke brand because they're basically a DSW brand that feel very cheap. Some of the shoes aren't that cheap at their regular price, but if you find some good clearance deals then they are really worth it. read more

FYI THEY CLOSE AT 8 ON SUNDAYS. Generally, the store is clean, there are a moderate amount of shoes in the racks and the clearance aisle isn't a disaster. Of course, there are going to be misplaced sizes in the clearance but generally it is very well maintained. If you're looking for a shoe that isn't on clearance, don't hesitate to ask one of the employees to check if there are more in store. If there isn't, they can ship it to your house! Be sure to make a rewards account with them! They will mail/email you coupons (sometimes with no minimum purchase) and $5 off for your bday. Writing this review to give some recognition to an amazing associate that helped me out at the store yesterday, 2/21/2020. I made an online order for 3 pairs of shoes and opted for in-store pick-up so I could try on the shoes and if they didn't work out for whatever reason, I could also process a return. Otherwise, I would've just had them shipped to my home. I approached the counter and the associate, Bang - was very friendly when he greeted me. I showed him my online order confirmation and he began to search for my items. He handed me my first pair of shoes, but had some trouble finding the remaining 2 items. He kindly asked me if I would like to try on the pair of shoes I had, while he went to go check other parts of the store for where the other items could be. He checked every possible location (upstairs, downstairs, etc) for these items but finally came back to his station, checked my online order confirmation # and turns out that those 2 remaining items on my order had already been marked as "picked up" before I had arrived to the store that day. Since it was clear that I had not picked up the items, he was extremely apologetic and offered me a few choices on how to proceed: 1) Process a refund for the 2 items right there on the spot 2) Offer a store credit 3) Refund those items and put it on store credit and re-order the items In all honesty, I was fine with either of those choices. I kind of took this as a sign from the universe saying "you probably should not be spending $$$ on 3 pairs of shoes anyway, do you REALLY need them" haha. But as Bang quickly checked the availability of those 2 items, in my size, we went with option 3. I jokingly asked him "should I opt for shipping this to my house, to avoid this from happening again?" and he immediately offered me free express shipping. WOW. I would've totally paid for regular shipping just fine, but I ultimately appreciated how much he was trying to help me out here. To wrap it up, Bang processed the return to store credit on 1 station, then ordered my items w/ the express shipping to my house on another station. Even though I left the store with only 1 pair of my shoes and not the original 3 that I thought I was leaving with - I was pretty happy with the entire experience and had a pretty great mood for the rest of my night. Thanks so much Bang! Keep that positive attitude and keeping your cool in those situations. Skimming these reviews, I see that I'm not the only one who's had an unpleasant experience with the store manager Fidelia. My son wore a pair of athletic shoes for 7 weeks and the quality was sub par. I called corporate, since I mostly order online, and they told me I was within the 60 day window for a refund but I needed to take it into the store. Fidelia told me that my son "abused" the shoes and she refused to take them back. What?! I am a long time customer with no history of returns. The shoes were falling apart because of poor quality, not because he was too hard on them. And, what happened to the golden rule of retail to Keep the Customer Happy. My home when I'm home (in the Bay, that is)...if I didn't need food and water to live, all my money would go to DSW. Okay wait, I'm totally over exaggerating but seriously for all you shoe game lovers... If you haven't heard of or ever been into a DSW yet...what are you waiting for? Let me fill you in on what you have been missing out on... The best thing about this store, hands-down is the sale corner. In most DSW stores that I've been to, they usually have 2 levels. Women's take up all the lower level and half of the second (huge selection for us, yay!). Men get just over 1/3 of the second level upstairs....then boom, the complete back corner is the best section: Sale Central! Shoes found in this area are already "marked down" but additional you will find a colored sticker attached. Depending on the colored sticker, an additional 25-75% discount can be applied to the already discounted shoe. If we do the math correctly, that's practically a free pair of shoes! I had to check out this store, since I remember the Old Navy layout. I wanted to see what they did to make it their own. The store is designed for women and 1/4 is for men upstairs. Sorry guys. This place was crawling with women and the line was long. I know that shoes is one of the biggest weaknesses for most women. It is funny to watch them in action here. They have these serious faces and stake out the seats and dump all their shopping bags all over it. Just don't get in their way. You'll find me in the clearance section. It is not as big as the DSW in Union Square SF. Tear. But I'll keep checking back since I live so close to the area for the discounts. read more

I almost never shop at DSW (I usually shop at Nordstrom), but I found a pair of wedges on their website that I couldn't find anywhere else. At a fantastic price! When I got them they were too small. I ordered a smaller size online and chose to have them ready at the store when I arrived to return the others. Customer service was excellent. At other DSWs I would give it a 3 star - minus 2 stars for lack of smaller sizes. After this DSW opened, I have definitely changed my mind. Thanks to my freakishly small feet, it's nearly impossible to find shoes that fit properly. I actually found a pair of size 5 wine colored pumps and a black studded clutch that reminded me of my Chanel half moon clutch. It is clean and organized, as a new store should be. The fact that I can actually find a size 5 shoe kicks it up to 4 stars. read more
