    Niku udon

This place located inside UBC campus, I know it's break time so there aren't many customers but I really was disappointed in the food quality: 1. Chicken Karaage: it is so tough, I'm sure it was made days ago, I almost lost a teeth trying to bite into eat and that is not okay. Even soaking it in udon soup doesn't soften it up. 2. Curry Beef Udon: it's rich and pretty good 3. Niku Tama Udon: it was covered in a huge huge huge layer of oil and I was just drowning in the oily taste, the udon noodle in both of our bowls were so soft it makes us wonder maybe they have made it a long time ago. Food quality shouldn't be compromised if school is not open, if u r going to serve customers old stale food, may as well close it for the holidays.

Got the Kimchi Mentaiko which was $14.49. Pros: - Flavor is pretty good. - Udon is cooked well as is the egg. - Service is decently fast and efficient. Cons: - Pretty pricey for a bowl of udon. - A bit salty for my liking.

Nori Bento & Udon is personally one of my favorite places to grab food on UBC campus. The service is fast, the food is good, and the prices are affordable. Although I don't come here often and have only tried 2 of the udon flavors on the menu, this place definitely is in my Top 10 places to grab food at UBC. As soon as you walk into the restaurant, a server is able to take your order near the entrance. The server then immediately makes your order on the spot in front of you and within a few minutes gives you your order. You're able to grab additional side dishes/drinks in the display refrigerator and there are also other hot sides to order like tempura, spring rolls etc. as well. I normally order the Niku Tama ($8.99) which is beef and egg. There is also the option to get the Niku udon without the onsen egg ($8.49). I recommend getting the udon with an onsen egg, as the egg has a very interesting texture. I've always been amazed by how many different ways you can cook an egg and this is definitely one you need to try! What was interesting to me as well was how they cracked the egg into the soup right upon serving it to you. The Niku Tama Udon is delicious. There is an ample amount of thinly sliced, tender beef and the udon is chewy with a refreshing texture. If I remember correctly, they handmake the udon noodles too! The broth is hot and perfectly seasoned (not too salty or bland) and the green onions and fried shallots add a nice kick to the flavorful broth. My favorite part of the udon is the onsen egg. The onsen egg has a soft and delicate texture. The egg yolk is creamy and when mixed in with the broth, is very delicious! I've also tried the curry beef udon here and it was pretty good as well. The curry broth was a lot more flavorful and strong compared to the Niku Tama udon, so if you're a curry kind of gal then I would recommend you go for the curry beef udon! The restaurant has a food court/fast food style vibe and the service is good. If you're craving a hot meal or need to grab a quick bite at UBC, then I would definitely recommend hitting Nori Bento & Udon.

Delicious creamy noodle @nori_ubc is a shop on UBC campus. It's famous of its noodles and there's always a long line there. I finally got to try it and it's my absolute favourite. What did I get? Kimchi mentaiko I like spicy so this caught my eye! I would say it's around medium spice for me. A nice kick but bearable. It's also really creamy with the egg and sauce. Prize is really reasonable. I would love to try other noodles there!!

The udon and ripped Togo bag

I bought today togo udon from the restaurant and they charge extra 25 cent ( which I understand) for togo bag , but not more 10 min in my way to home the bag was ripped /torn and drop over my pants very hot !!!!! Risking customer Safety with this unsafe bags for hot foods .

This should be called Nori Udon & Bento instead of Nori Bento & Udon. I've been here twice for udon, and decided to try a beef teriyaki bento today. I will say that for a box set, I was happy that the California roll is fresh. Often the California roll in box sets is premade and dried up, but not here. I found the sauce on the beef a little too sweet. The beef is the same beef they use in the udon, which is really better when it's hydrated by the soup. Salad was totally inedible and... not really a salad. Still, a good volume of food that didn't totally taste like fast food. The udon is a different story. I've had both the laksa and the curry udon, and I crave the curry udon now whenever there's a rainy day. So cozy and comforting, particularly with the onsen tamago (poached egg). Nice, chewy noodles. I added tempura prawns once, which I wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend. They're a bit soggy and saturated with oil. The tonkatsu is a pretty amazing deal at $3.50 for big slice of tonkatsu. The chicken karaage is $2 for a little cup of karaage bites. While it's good value either way, this stuff is much better if you seeing it being freshly cooked. The tempura at the tempura bar doesn't stay super crispy under the heat lamp, but the taste is ok.

    Now

40% price increase within a year. That is incredibly disturbing. Not going here again :/

Can't believe this place is right on the UBC campus! For just under $10, you can get a delicious hot bowl of udon. So good for a pick me up / comfort food in the middle of the day. I got the #2 which is the "Niku Tama". This includes a generous helping of the just right al dente udon, with another generous topping of beef. There is also an onsen egg in there as well (similar to a poached egg, but it is slow cooked and the egg texture is very creamy and satisfying to eat). You order at the front of the store by telling the staff what you want. Then they will make it and then hand it to you further down the line and you can put your food on a tray. There is a tempura bar where you can add sides of different tempura'd veggies/protein to your meal for extra $s. You pay at the very end and you can also do take out with the noodles if you want; they'll give you a lid for it. I really appreciate the staff helping pack my udon and put in all the utensils, chopsticks AND a soup spoon, and napkins into the bag! Line moves fast so don't worry :)

I enjoyed it! Compared to the other restaurants at UBC, I think this is probably the best place to eat. The staff is friendly and the food is good. The udon is on the softer side (which I love), though my friend claims it to be a bit too soft. I had the niku tama, which I thought was delicious. I was really filled up by it and couldn't even manage to finish the soup. They also had some other food on the side that you can add to your udon, such as tempura. Though I think $1/ea is quite expensive... especially when they looked like they've been sitting there for a while.

UDON! I love me some udon. It's the perfect comfort food, especially when you add some tempura into your lunch plans. Why Nori is awesome: - They make the noodles freshly. You can even see the machine chopping more udon while you wait in line. This means the noodles are aldente AND squishy in the middle, just as they should be. - The cheapest noodles are less than $5. That is amazing value. - They have tempura, karaage and korroke if noodles alone won't fill you up - There are bentos and sushi too (I didn't try them as the smell of udon soup was too good for me to walk past noodles without ordering them...) - They have a few non-traditional options like laksa (served with udon) - The curry udon soup is great. What could be better: - The tempura is pretty oily. It only really tastes good if you dip it into your soup before ypu munch it. - The queuing system was a bit messy the first time I went. People that wanted bentos skip the line, so people with noodles have to wait longer, and may end up with soggy noodles. - The kaki "normal" udon soup was pretty salty for me, but it's not bad. This is my favorite place to eat so far at UBC. I've already been back twice, and I'll sure I'll go again.

The servers are so nice and the service itself is pretty fast! The food is served cafeteria style. I got the #2 niku tama, udon noodles with beef and an onsen egg. It was so yummy. Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a warm fix on a cold day. :-)

For campus food, I will give it 3 stars. I ordered the Seafood Laksa Udon. The flavour was not great, but not bad either. I think I prefer the laksa at Bubble Waffle that's down the block at the village. The udon wasn't fully cooked and it is salty. So salty noodle plus salty soup... I will probably still go back and give their bento a try. But I will get take out. The place is way too crowded and the seating is uncomfortable because you are elbow to elbow with the person next to you.

This visit we ordered the shrimp garlic fried rice, Agedashi Nasu, Grilled Squid with Garlic Mayo, and an assortment of sashimi. The shrimp garlic fried rice is an absolute must every time. It's packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and somehow manages to be comforting without feeling too heavy. It is a large dish and can easily be shared by 3-4, depending on what else you order. We also love the Agedashi Nasu here with melt-in-your-mouth eggplant wrapped in a light, delicate coating that soaks up the savory broth. Service is always quick and organized, even when the restaurant is busy. Dishes arrive as they're ready, making it easy to share everything around the table, which is exactly how an izakaya experience should feel. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Found this little Izakaya spot while visiting Vancouver and it was such a great experience. It's as…read moreauthentic as it gets and reminds me a lot of Japan when I visited in 2025. This place gets busy, so I highly recommend reserving a table online (via OpenTable) but we did show up early to see if there was walk-in seating available. Luckily, we did get the last 2 seats at the bar. The staff are so friendly and cheery. They greet customers that come in and thank every customer when they leave. People who haven't been to an izakaya may think it's loud and noisy, but the point of izakayas is they're supposed to be vibrant, high energy, and filled with cheerful chatter. Think of a tapas-style pub/bar for people to unwind and gather to chat after a long day at work. I loved the atmosphere, as it's casual, entertaining, and lively. The food was great and I couldn't think of a dish I didn't like. The sashimi were so fresh and high quality. Of course they use freshly grated wasabi too. The hanger steak was cooked perfectly and super tender and flavorful. The saba mackerel is grilled to perfection and reminds me of the ones I ate in Japan. I'm not a big fan of bonito but the yaki udon was so tasty, I still ate it with the bonito flakes on top! I would love to come back or go to their Toronto (closer to me) location next!

I came here for dinner on a weeknight with two foodie friends of mine. Said friends lived in Japan…read morefor over a decade and they've dined here often in the past, saying it's very "authentic" Izakaya and it reminds them of their past life in Japan (which they miss a lot). Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
