Just had a dinner there yesrerday. The waitress was very impatient and angry looking. While waiting for my friend to order the waitress adressed her as "Hello". What??? Where in the world do you adress a customer sitting at the table and making an order as "Hello"?? So rude! I couldn't believe it. To me the whole service was actually shocking because I came from a different town and we are used to excellent and most friendly service at the Japanese restaurant near us and to waitresses there being so sweet, so smily and nice and super polite. I couldn't belive that this was a Japanese place because the whole staff there looked angry and unfriedndly like customers were a bother to them. That's how me and my friend felt. This experience was such a noticable contrast to the wonderful Japanese restaurant we go to in our town. The food was just OK. Miso soup was watery and the salmon wrap had 2 tiny pieces of salmon in it and lots of rice. Wouldn't go there again. read more

We were regulars at this restaurant for a little while. However, one night my king crab had a lot of shells in them - I couldn't even eat it. We told the manager but she did nothing but apologize and say next time they would keep a better eye out. Then she told us all she would only charge us for one roll instead of two. I had begrudingly ate one of the rolls so she wasn't doing us any favors. I still paid for what I ate, which was gross. Poor customer service, especially for customers that you know are regulars. Went here for dinner with two other friends. It was a Thursday night so we didn't have to wait for a table. We started off with Miso Soup, Chicken Satay, and Beef Negimaki. The miso and satay were pretty standard but the beef was delicious- very tender and well seasoned with a tasty dipping sauce. We split 5 specialty rolls (Red Dragon, Sweet Potato, Knockout, Nori Jade, Bugs Bunny, Jalapeno) and 3 regular rolls (Shrimp Tempura, Philadelphia, and Spicy Tuna) between the three of us and we were totally stuffed. The portions at Nori are huge and artfully arranged and the list of specialty rolls is MASSIVE. I was skeptical about the fried mango in the Nori Jade but it actually complimented the other ingredients quite well. Not sure whether we ended up with the regular soy sauce or the low sodium version but it was pretty salty either way. It felt like we had to wait a little longer than expected for our rolls, but other than that, the servers were attentive and not overbearing at all. We never felt like we were being rushed out the door like some other reviewers have mentioned. Then again, there wasn't anyone waiting for a table either so who knows? We spent about $25 a piece including tax and tip for a ton of food and left with overstuffed stomachs- would definitely return! Caveat- the place is BYOB so come prepared if you're looking to enjoy some sake with your sushi. read more

Once a month, the kids get to pick a special place for a special dinner: They almost always pick Nori. The meal always starts with "Fish Delight", a somewhat odd name for a whitefish tempura that disappears as fast as it is put down on the table. That's generally followed by a huge bento box, eel or sweet potato tempura roll, fried rice, and sushi. Which one (two or three) is always a surprise and always delicious. Who cares if it's "traditional" or not when it is this good. We have always been treated very well by the servers. One more important thing: Parking in Montclair is generally a nightmare, but we have no trouble finding a spot in the lot behind Nori or the side streets. read more

so I went here with a few friends about a few days ago and I'm still thinking about the meal I had here! the sushi was AMAZING. to start, the presentation of the food was very well done. also, my friends and I decided to be very daring and order the sushi with crab meat and kiwi on top. I have been in this restaurant since they opened about 9 years ago, it was my favorite spot for sushi until Sunday October 18,2015 when my boyfriend and I went for early dinner and just when we started eating we heard this clipping noise, I asked the waitress what the clipping noise was and when we turn around it was the chef clipping his nails at the sushi bar where they prepare the sushi. This is the most disgusting thing I have seen in the restaurant. I will never come back and I would tell all the people who I referred this restaurant to about this. wow.. don't know how they get 4 stars. maybe so fake reviews or what. good things first. price was decent, food was ok, not so bad but , the fish quality r diff can't compare to some decent grades others offered. they tuna they had was a little on the lower side. as for the kitchens they offered, nothing special . just a whole bunch Japanese dishes, nothing fancy to talk about, u can get them at any japanese restaurant. and the servers , omg~~~ just OMG, sounds like they r still learning in English, sometimes hard to understand what they r explaining, or sometime i knows even more than they r telling me. looks like i am an expert to them lol. anyway, if u r looking for some cheap sushi or kitchen main dishes , than it's really not a bad place for u to go, but if u want some with better quality fish, go elswhere n find another one. and also. i found the Miso soup they offer had way SO much MSGs. My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for years. Lately, it has changed and the service is horrible. They use to bring out a complimentary small dish of vegetables - no big deal, but a nice gesture. They would also give you warm hand towels prior to your meal. Both have been taken away. The last few times we've gone, I requested a table by the window. I've been told they were reserved for parties of more than two. However, each time I've seen them seat two people at those tables. This last time (last night) I called them on this. They barely apologized and insisted the tables were for more than two. I pointed out the window tables that had only two people and they shrugged and walked away. Before leaving, I told them that they have lost a long time customer and that we will not be returning. It made no difference to them, but it made me feel better. It would seem that the restaurant has gone though changes since it first opened and the changes have not been for the better. It is a shame because it was once a very nice place to enjoy a good meal. read more

All the bad reviews you are reading here are real deal. The food is excellent. But the almost non existent attention, delays, wrong orders, etc are constant. Nori has always been my favorite place for sushi, it's fresh and they really know how to combine just the right stuff to make great sushi. When I first started coming here, I was greeted nicely, hot towels were at the table and a small dish with carrots and (I think) pickles were provided upon arrival. However, the service at the Montclair location has gotten so bad. About a year ago, I had a server not take my order for about 40 minutes, it was busy, I let it go. But then I noticed that even when it wasn't as busy, service still sucked. When I went for my mom's birthday a few weeks ago- I left furious. We had dinner, service was slow, but we were fine with it because we weren't in any rush. Towards the end of dinner my sister went up to the waitress and mentioned it was my mom's birthday and the waitress responded rudely with something like "you don't have to tell me". This may be perhaps bc she and another waitress were sharing tables and perhaps she felt we should've told the other waitress, but she could've gone about it differently. No tempura icecream was served for the birthday girl. On our way out, I mentioned what occurred to whom I presumed to be the manager and the rude waitress overheard and jumped to her defense saying she was going to bring it out but we were already leaving. Uhmmmm she had a good 25 minutes to bring it out, it's not like we left immediately thereafter. We will not be returning- but will be checking out the Wayne location. Fingers crossed! read more

Beyond pissed at this restaurant and their waitstaff. No customer service at all. Went in at 1:30 on a Wednesday. Order two tuna rolls (pointing to them on the lunch menu which comes with soup or salad). Asked for regular soy instead of low sodium--was told NO. The rolls came. After we finished the waitress asked if we wanted anything else and I said, "Don't I get a salad?" She said "NO because you didn't say Lunch Special". I said "Wasn't my order one of the lunch specials?" Her response was "You didn't say Lunch Special." And she walked away and got the bill. Will not be returning here. Came here recently for a friend's birthday and we sat at the classic Japanese-style table in the back private room. You have to take off your shoes and everything. It was fun and something I've never tried before. The place is BYOB, which I liked. We brought our own sake and had appetizers, entrees, etc for about 10 people. The bill came to a little over $200. Not bad! Maybe I'm not the most qualified to review a sushi restaurant since I'm not a hardcore sushi fan, but those who had it said it was great. I had miso soup which tasted very fresh and homemade unlike miso at some places. I had the firecracker roll which is cooked shrimp tempura with pineapple and some kind of spicy sauce. The combination of spice from the sauce, crunch from the shrimp and sweetness of the pineapple was very good! We stayed a long time (3 hours) and not once were we rushed by the staff. They were very friendly and everyone's order came out on time. If you're in Montclair and in the mood for sushi, go here! read more

We made reservations and were given the best round booth in the restaurant. BYOB is a great thing, but I feel like its made up for in the price of the sushi. We shared a couple appetizers. A lot of sushi places that I've been to usually rush their customers out. You get your apps and 5min later your entree is served. Not here. You get to actually enjoy your meal and conversation. I had a friend who lived right down the street from Nori and this was his go to sushi spot. I went here not expecting too much and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised. There were 3 of us who ordered a bunch of rolls to share (both regular and special). Everything was prepared great with fresh tasting fish. I ordered take out last night. Let me start with the food - fresh and good. Can't complain about the quality - we had the maki combo B, Brooklyn roll and spider roll. There's parking at the back (always a plus if you are a business on Bloomfield Ave in Montclair). Unfortunately, Nori does not make it to the top of my list because of my front of the house experience (yes, I know, it was takeout - how bad could it have been??). Well - I was almost an hour late because of rush hour traffic and the lady behind the counter was obviously annoyed and was making remarks about how I was late - did I get lost? Why didn't I answer my phone when they called (they called my work # from caller id when I clearly gave them my cell - which they didn't call). Apparently, my apology and explanation wasn't enough - she was making remarks to her colleague while I was paying my bill. So sadly, because customer service is just as important as the quality of food for me - given the choice - I would rather go somewhere else. read more
