Our meal was solidly underwhelming. Bland Mac and cheese? What a comfort food travesty. When the highlight of a meal is the tater tots that you can get from Taco Time, it's not worth returning. If the owner reads this, please go to Costco and pick up some salt. Also, buyer beware that menu prices do not include a mandatory 2.5% service charges "to offset higher food and labor costs". It's King County, we all know how expensive it is to live here but most if not all other local restaurants include all their costs in their published menu prices. When you give a place three stars, it's easy to hear the voices of other Yelpers saying "aw, c'mon! They work hard! Give 'em another star! Can you point to anything they did wrong to justify deducting two whole stars from a good score?" But that's not what three stars mean. Three stars means everything's fine, but hasn't stood out from the crowd enough to call it exceptional or otherwise noteworthy. These guys are definitely just fine. Let's start with the basics, from the outside in. This is one of those strip malls surrounded in several directions by trees that are all much taller than strip malls. It's like a little merry band of businesses that got plopped here one night when everyone was asleep. Plenty of parking, nice sturdy construction, nothing out of the ordinary. Inside it's more or less a continuation of that theme. Nicely worn dark wood tables, sturdy wooden chairs, some high chairs for the wee bairns, and, yeah, a couple of wee bairns here and there. It's an ale house but it has both a bar and a dining room, as well as an unusual small side room with a few comfortable leather chairs. There are flat screens everywhere in all three rooms, tuned to the game. The crowd is nice, seems like locals. They give you the feeling they probably bump into neighbors here with some frequency, and pull tables together and hang out. The staff seems like there's a good chance some of them grew up in the neighborhood. Same goes for the patrons. This gives the place a nice implicit feeling of connectedness that can only happen, it can't be planned--whether you're in a strip mall or beautiful custom construction or even a registered historic property. The beer list is solid, though to a beer geek it's nearly meaningless. 16 local and regional taps, good stuff across a variety of styles from up and down the west coast. 20 years ago if a place with food, TVs, and that beer program opened, beer geeks would have driven 25 miles or more to try it. These days, if you drive 25 miles, you probably drive past 20 decent beer spots and maybe a couple great ones. These guys are here to serve decent beer to a local crowd and they do a good job. Service was right on point without being fussy or hurried. Friendly without spending 10 minutes chatting. Just right. The food ran the usual pub grub gamut, with a few fried things to start, couple salads, a soup du jour, bunch of sandwiches and burgers, and a couple entrees to give the cooks a chance to actually cook. The fried pickles were cut by hand, so varied in thickness, and breaded with cornmeal. The cornmeal wasn't a perfectly even coat, which it never is. This made for some crunchier bites, some juicier bites, some saltier bites, which was nice. This was a solid snack to let people munch absent-mindedly and then order another beer. The potato chowder was the soup of the day, and came topped with grated parmesan. You add salty white cheese to garnish a cheese soup, yeah, you're using food as an inspiration to order another beer. Tasted good, though. I finished it without much pause. The french dip was decent. Nice chewy bread with a nice chewy crust. Meat was decently tender, and heated all the way through. Some fully-melted white cheese tucked into the sandwich. The au jus was a bit too salty for me, but by that stage of the meal I was ready for that. Two entrees, two pints, and an app came to $51. Not a screaming deal, not a ripoff--just a fair price for a fair job of work done by all parties at the ale house. If I lived local, I'd be in here. When I'm picking someone up at the airport, it's not a bad option. read more

Horrible customer service and extremely slow service. We arrived at 1pm with less than half the tables full and did not get waited on for thirty minutes. An hour later we were still waiting for our kids milk and the appetizer (spinach dip and pita). No water served despite being requested, had to repeatedly ask for the basics (napkins, fork, etc.). First visit, on a Saturday night at 1120pm: Google listing says open til midnight. Doors were open, sat down at bar, where 9-10 locals were having drinks (which were full, recently topped off). Watched baseball game on TV for about 5min until the bartender appeared and curtly said "I'm closed" and walked away. I watched the game for another 15min or so, everyone nursed their drinks and talked/laughed with each other (and the bartender), in no hurry, until I finally just left. This place is a little hidden gem for fresh local craft brews close to the airport. It was super mellow on a weeknight with just a few locals. Draft selection was excellent, did a flight with a gose, two IPAs and and a porter and all were delicious. Rob was super great! read more

We hosted a large group (25) gathering here on a beautiful sunny day. They reserved the outdoor seating area for us, catered some delicious appetizers, and had a perfect setup for BYOB. Saw 3 people who sat plenty after us be served with food and drinks first. Understandable to a point for sure. Asked for few simple changes on my salad and got literally none. Didn't wanna wait another 20-30 for my salad so I kept my mouth shut. It sucks to have to make it easy on them when I only saw one bartender and one server with a pretty busy house from my eyes. So disappointed by our last few experiences here. The Ale House used to be a great neighborhood spot for a brew and good meal. But unfortunately, that isn't true anymore. The waitstaff forgot to bring waters after being asked twice then proceeded to not check on our table again for 30+ minutes. When I asked for extra condiments, the server rudely responded that he was "on it". When our food came, my boyfriend's meal was completely wrong and my chicken wings were apparently never put in with the kitchen. Disappointing all around. We have just enjoyed the most memorable feast of codfish and chips for many years. Immediate waitress with menus and beverage offerings got us off to a great start. Not familiar with beer selections we were guided to Scotch Ale and it was very good, well not as good as German Dunkel but satisfying. What was very impressive was the service then the food. The entrees were ample and I would say more bountiful for the prices. I had the three-piece codfish offering while my wife devoured her two-piece. The ambiance was softened by the hardwood seats and the acoustics are terrible with noise as a distraction. Noise and all, this is a place to mark as a repeater. Normandy Park has an attraction in this Ale House and one that needs to be added for a Des Moines gourmet target. Bottom line? Itching to hang out on a late Friday night and decided to come to this local neighborhood bar. I've seen the bar from the outside whenever I'm in the area and have always been drawn to the large screen TVs that can be seen from a distance. I thought what a great place to watch some football. It's located in front of a neighborhood super market. There is an abundance of parking stalls. When you walk in, you basically seat yourself. It was after 9pm on a Friday night and it wasn't packed. It had a very relaxing and casual ambiance. There are quite a few wide screen TVs in the place and they were put in areas where you can definitely see them no matter where you sit. SERVICE: It was Amazing! The bartender was the one serving us at the time. I wish I had gotten his name. My bad! He was very attentive! He immediately gave us our menu when we sat down and gave us time to make up our minds on our order considering we were quite indecisive. I had ordered the house Cabernet, which is by Pennywise. The bartender was able to describe the flavors of the wine in detail. Kudos to him! He also brought us water without having to ask for it. FOOD: We just had 3 varying appetizers: the wings dry with the buffalo sauce on the side, the crab cake sliders, and the chicken satay on top of peanut sauce. The food came out rather quickly. The dishes were presented nicely. I would say the appetizers tasted ok. Nothing I would really rave about. I may try other food items when I come back. However, there is a good selection of microbrews on tap. Yay! My friend had the Georgetown Porter then he had a nitro-pushed stout. Happy Hour is from 4 - 6pm. The prices are reasonable. Went to the ale house at 2 pm 12/9/2022. My wife & I have been going to the ale house for many years. It is usually pretty good. I know there are staffing issues. We sat down, got our menus, I asked the male server for a Pilsner, he said they don't have one. I asked for a sample of the blonde ale and the server seemed put out by my request. He came back with my wife's chardonnay & told me the blonde was too foamy & did not offer any substitutes. I settled on water. We then sat for 15 minutes waiting for someone to take our order. Should have walked out at this point. Finally, I walked up to the bar & one of the regulars yelled at the bartender to assist me. I ordered Thai wings to go. Mistake! The wings were dry, nothing like we had in the past. We live 5 minutes away and will not go back. Sad. Too make things worse, the wife insisted I leave a tip. read more

We went in and tried out the crab cake sliders and a burger, both were very good. The beer selection is good and the service was very good. As for service, it could use some work, my server was more interested in her personal life, telling it to some guy ... As for the food, its better than the typical BAR FOOD but it wasn't something to say, OMG, I have to come back for that !!! It was alright .... Overall Value, did I get my money worth, almost $40 buck for a sandwich, a couple of beers and a tip ??? Food is good. Every single time (5-6 times) I have ordered to go they have messed up my order. It's infuriating to get all the way home and they have charged you for a more expensive burger and none of the right fixings are on it. For this reason alone I will never order from them again. read more

Hello! Me and my husband and many many other friends came in last night for a gathering after a funeral service. Just wanted to say that our server was spectacular! I cant remember her name but I can never forget her blue hair! She was attentive, we never went with out drinks, her attitude was amazing and she was funny! She had many of us laughing during a time of sadness. She was on the go and never stopped. All around it was a great experience! She was amazing! We will be coming back! Thank her for us all again. Moved to area in Feb. wanted to really like this neighborhood pub...have tried at least 10-12 times. Inconsistent. Have had a few pretty decent meals. The last two times have been awful. Place is filthy. Had to clean our own table as they don't even wipe off tables between customers. I sat there long enough to witness this. No hot water in bathroom so cleaned my table with cold paper towels. The place reeks of stale food. Order was wrong. They give you one tiny ketchup container for your fries which they didn't even bring with the food. Had to ask for it! Plus we had to ask for our check too. This place is awful. Decided to check this place out for lunch on Labor Day. The place was clean and bright, seems like the TVs are oddly placed - maybe the booth we were in isn't somewhere to sit if you want to see the game. The beer selection was written on a chalk board and it was clear and easy to read. The waitress was pretty slow it getting our drinks and check but the food came out within a reasonable time and it was good. Good to Know: they do not serve dinner entrees before 4pm but the menus are combined so we left feeling short changed because we couldn't order what looked good. Ended up ordering turkey melt and fish and chips (only entree one could order at any time). You get 2 pieces of fish with the dinner entree fish and chips. The turkey was delicious. Prices were a little steep; not sure the price was right for what was received. Maybe if service was excellent and things flowed better; didn't live up to expectations. read more

Right off the top, my amen to what Anton from Vashon said. We've been to the Normandy Park Alehouse several times, this may have just been our last. The food is okay, looking for a good burger, this is the place every once in an while. A brew to go with it, they can probably find something you will like. My wife and I stopped in for a burger and drinks. Both burgers had great flavor though though a little dry. I can't complain because I order mine without cheese. I can complain that my wife's burger was dry as well and we have only felt less welcome in a public restaurant one time in our lives and that was in a little backwater where outsiders were not welcome. Our waitress was talking before she got to the table and was done before she got there. I felt like I was an imposition to her life. We felt unwelcome from the moment we sat down - and we are locals. When I asked for some mustard and mayo for my almost dry hamburger, the mustard was plopped on the table and the mayo only showed up after half my burger was gone. They weren't very busy, but our waitress had more time to visit with friends in the bar than to be a tiny bit friendly. I think the most words she spoke to us at one time was "It's 20 minutes to Happy Hour." We have tried to love you Normandy Park Alehouse, but you can do better. Went in on a Thursday night, got there about 4:30. Took advantage of the Happy Hour Menu with some draft beer, tater tots and some house wine. The place filled up pretty good and was almost full when I left at 6:00. The Steak Salad I had was awesome - prepared just how I asked for it. The tater tots were typical - just as expected. The beer was cold and went down quick and the wine was fresh. Great little spot for a quick meal, good beer and friendly service. Try this place! We were randomly driving around unfamiliar territory on a Sunday game day and struck by hunger pains right before Seahawks kick off- we stopped here. Overall layout wasn't ideal for game watching from the tables in the dining room, but it sufficed with my husband watching the screen directly above my head and me watching the screens on the opposite wall. The service was friendly and although our waiter seemed like it was his first day (awkward-hence minus 1 star) we were served quickly and got my special requests correct. I got the Caesar salad (no croutons no meat) and the hubs got the roast beef dip with tots. Wow this was great food! My salad was awesome, housemade Caesar was a touch spicy with crisp romaine and plenty of cheese. His sandwich was awesome on a really nice roll, and the tots were crispy and hot. The pint size 7&7 was only $6.50 and his Coors light was only $4.50. We would definitely go back if we were in the area. Lots of locals filled the place up as we sat there and I can see why! read more
