Popped in unintentionally since JP's was closed. My father and I were headed to lunch. We sat outside which had a fantastic atmosphere to catch up. Let me start by saying the service was amazing! You could tell that they cared as soon as we walked in the door. The service was so well that you could feel a connection between all of the staff to the point where I asked if they were family owned and sure enough they are! The food was great. My Mediterranean salad I supplemented with spinach and was very filling. Who doesn't love feta cheese and kalamata olives with a whole chicken breast? My father had a BLT that comes with the side salad and both were huge... which he was able to eat, but I don't know how. I highly recommend Norman's for well, everyone. I've had the food one other time and it's OK it's breakfast food it's just OK. The prices here are absolutely ridiculous. It's a total insult and rip off you pay seven dollars for an orange juice and they bring it out to you in a small cup 1550 for a burrito that's no bigger than a Taco Bell burrito. The owners need to step it up and take care of their customers. This is ridiculous. I won't come back here nor will I advise anybody else to unless they take better care of their customers. A little mom and pop spot. Went here for breakfast and my siblings go here all the time because they live in Castro Valley. Very affordable and inexpensive. You will spend less than $10, even less than that, per person for a breakfast combo. I was in a waffles and pancakes conundrum but my sister said get the waffles. The portion sizes won't disappoint and you will get exactly what you ask for. I ordered the waffle combo with two eggs over-easy, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, and a slice of watermelon. I decided to try out this place out on a whim. It used to be a hofbrau growing up as a kid. I was in the mood to try out what it had become, and decided to take my parents with me for the experience. The exterior of the building still remains the same. It's painted red and reminds me of a barn. Surrounding it is ample parking. It's a pleasant surprised to have so many spaces to choose from. Even if the interior and outside seating is full, I'm sure there'd still be plenty of spaces for visitors. Walking in, the atmosphere inside had been transformed into something one would find in the 50s infused with a country farm theme. There's an abundance of roosters in plaster, ceramic, and wood adorning the dividing walls while all around ceiling are sleeves of old albums. Classic sock hop songs are piped into the air softly while the menu reflects the food from that time. Burgers, sandwiches, salads, comfort country favorites, and fountain drinks are offered for lunch and dinner, while brunch favorites like egg Benedict and omelettes. Everything is very reasonably priced. A note to anyone who doesn't like comfort food, I don't think this will be up your alley. I had their sourdough burger with fries while my folks had a classic burger, one with fries and the other potato salad. Our orders were up quick, the fries crispy, and the burgers cooked just right. My dad loved their potato salad while he stole quite a few of my abundant fries. I loved their sourdough burger, it hit the right spot. Our waitress was sweet, punctual, and knowledgeable about the menu. While I know they carry pie slices and ice cream, we were all so full we couldn't order dessert! It's definitely a place to come to with family or friends. It's cozy with all the guilty pleasures one could wish for from a diner setting. I was happy to see that Norman's Grill now is serving outdoors during this time. My friend and I had a wonderful brunch time with coffee, her choice of chicken fried steak and mine being the Irish Eggs Benedict, as I have enjoyed in the past. She asked for onions and green peppers to be added to the country potatoes and I said, "Wow, I'd like that too!" Very good. I'm not a huge potato fan and that made me a fan. Great job. read more

Many folks have recommended Norman's as a place for tasty breakfast in Castro Valley at a reasonable price, so I decided to check them out today. I entered the restaurant around 7:45 this morning and was greeted right away. I was nicely instructed to take a seat and someone would be right with me so I took a seat on the patio. There was one other table sat out there who had already ordered. A gentlemen came out to refill beverages for them and a lady came out shortly after to deliver their food, I was not acknowledged by either of them. In total I waited just shy of 15 minutes without anyone approaching my table before I walked out and drove to another local establishment. I will try again and hope to get better results read more

We haven't been here since before March 2020 so we decided to try this place again. It was pretty bland 2 years ago. This time it was the worst meal I've ever had. I had country fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy with vegetables. My husband had the pasta and shrimp. My mashed potatoes were old and dry. The vegetables were mush. Their staff here are super nice! There's plenty of free parking on the side and around back. Not difficult to get to at all. Their chefs really know how to make quality food: The French Toast Combo, the Mushroom Burger (+ onion rings), and spaghetti with meatballs were all delicious. Mind you, this was all eaten in one sitting by two people. I loved the oldies style decor and music. The whole place had a homey, non-uppity feel to it. After paying for food that I barely ate she followed me to my car & threw my keys inside & yelled a 3x "no tip". This is a very solid place to go for good food. Good ice tea, good coffee great sandwiches amazing french fries. And most importantly when you come here for breakfast and you get the mixed fruit option it's actually fresh cut fruit. I don't think a lot of people know that there is a commercial bagged fresh fruit product with some sort of a preservative in it so all they have to do is open the bag, put it in a dish and serve it to you. Way less work. But you can always tell, at least I can. There's a lack of crispness. The edges have mushiness. Fruit shouldn't melt in your mouth. And a lot of restaurants use this stuff, but not Normans. You get real fresh cut fruit. And, they don't chop onions and then chop the fruit so you get oniony fruit either. I'm looking at you, Elio's. I don't understand the five-star reviews. I ordered a reuben, which might have been my first mistake. It did have corned beef, and it was on rye bread, but that's where the resemblance ended. It had some sort of bland, white cheese melted on top, and I actually had to lift up the bread to see if there was any sauerkraut because I couldn't taste it. No idea what the sauce was, but it wasn't Thousand Island. The sandwich had zero flavor. Same with the onion rings. My wife got a tuna salad sandwich and gave a similar review. You'll be much better off going to McDonalds -- or not eating at all -- than dropping $14 on a tasteless sandwich at Norman's. read more
