I hired North Bay Moving and Storage last week for a move that I did and really enjoyed their help! I moved from two locations (storage and house) to one house. First, they fit me in last minute when they already had a full schedule. Second, they quoted me a reasonable price but the men were so efficient that the quote was almost cut in half in the end. I made sure to tip them extra. ;-) Lastly, and almost most importantly, the three movers were early, extremely efficient, and professional. They listened to all of my special requests, put my Sleep Number bed back together correctly (YAY), and were kind to my 3 year old who frequently found himself in their way. I contracted with North Bay Moving & Storage for an interstate move from northern California to southern Washington. Several valuable and irreplaceable items were never delivered to the Washington destination. These things went "missing" while in the care of Allied Van Lines which physically moved us. North American Moving & Storage is an agent for North American Van Lines and Allied Van Lines. While I can say that I don't think they were directly involved in the theft of my personal belongings, they are the agent for the moving van line that is responsible: Allied Van Lines. If you contract with North American Moving & Storage you take the chance that your personal belongs will be taken by someone hired by Allied Van Lines. Or taken by persons unknown who took advantage of an unguarded truck. I have filed a police report and it is the opinion of the Central Marin Police Authority that my personal property was stolen while in the care of the Allied Van drivers Matt P. and his son Matt P. If you do use Allied Van Lines and these are the names of your drivers you should refuse to trust your belongings with them. I would pursue criminal charges if I could. But at this point it is a civil matter and there is nothing I can do but regret my choice of contracting with North Bay Moving & Storage. Was told the moving truck was showing up on 3/7. Booked a hotel based off that info for my drive. Didn't show up until 3/8. Lost my free hotel room I had booked because of that. Moving guys were nice, but didn't wrap any of my furniture. Moving guys then called me asking if they could drop off the stuff a day early. Told me they would be at the apartment by 1pm. I hustled to get there and they didn't show up until 5. Top it off, the truck was too big and couldn't fit in the complex. They had to track down a uhaul to unload my items into and then unload the items into my apartment. Didn't get done until 8pm (or later). The only plus to all of this is I received a check in the mail because they over quoted the weight of my items. read more

These guys were amazing! From the first call with Terrie to setup the move until the last box was dropped off, it was a friendly and professional service. Ed, David and Martin were fabulous. They were very punctual and went above and beyond when we needed some extra boxing done and some furniture taken apart. They had a set of stairs on both ends and never once let that slow them down!! First impressions go a long way, and my first impression makes me question dealing with this company. An appointment was made for an in-home estimate through the national office. I called the day of the appointment since I hadn't heard anything and figured perhaps since Monday had been a holiday they just hadn't had a chance. Apparently, my appointment never got on the books. Fortunately, they wanted to accommodate me and since one of their competitors cancelled the following day - this morning - they said they'd be out at 10:30am. 11am came today and no show, no call. I called them and was told a shipment had come in and the owner - who is their estimator - had to oversee unloading, but he'd be leaving in 5 minutes to head up to us. This would put him around 45 minutes to an hour late. 5 minutes later I get a call that he's not coming since he has to be in San Francisco now, and that they're sending me a form to fill out so they can give me an estimate - which is precisely what I didn't want. I want an expert to look at things, not to guess at things myself. I want someone I can actually talk to and ask questions as we go through. They can't accommodate me. If you can't even make your appointments for an estimate, how can I trust you to handle my belongings? I can understand not making the appointment yesterday due to Monday's holidays, but you've now reneged on a commitment to me and failed to provide me another reasonable option. I've since called the national office again and they're going to try to find me another local agent to deal with. read more

I used North Bay to coordinate a move from CA to MA. This company was not transparent with what their "estimate" charges and fees were. They also overcharged me a price that I did not sign for or agree to AND they were not clear that this move price was NOT actually an "estimate" as documented, where the final price would be based on the final weight, but, rather it was a flat rate fee. Typically cross country moves are weight based (somewhere around 10 cents per pound) and my previous move arranged through a DIFFERENT moving company in the other direction from NH to CA was very clear and the final price was appropriately calculated based on final weight. The word "estimate" to me does not mean flat rate fee. North Bay also charged me $700 for "shuttle" service based on an estimate of the time it would take to complete this shuttle transfer (Sausalito to Mill Valley). It is a 15-20 minute drive from Mill Valley to Sausalito, it took 1 hour for their guys to inventory and load my items, it takes LESS time to unload and no unwrapping or unpacking would have been involved on the Mill Valley end as I had packed and wrapped EVERYTHING myself. So, this comes down to approximately 2.5 hours (maybe 3 max if their guys took a break) to complete this shuttle transfer. So, They charged me ~$233/hour - which is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS!! This to me is dishonest and unreasonable. North Bay's customer service has also not been great and therefore, I would not recommend or use them again - Buyer Beware. read more

Jan is nice and understanding. His staff is highly professional and accommodating. Having used a relocation specialist from my company as an intermediary, there was a lot lost in communication. Jan is willing to do the operational logistics which makes it much easier to have one only person to call. I ended up cutting the logistical person out totally and directed all communications with Jan. However, their command center is closed on Saturday, a day their movers still work. I used North Bay Moving several months ago for my move in San Rafael. They were very prompt, careful with my items, and extremely pleasant to work with. I had read the two other low Yelp reviews but called them anyway to get an estimate. The owner came to my house and was thoughtful in his estimate and seemed to really want my business which was very nice. His movers were great and worked hard for the two days they packed and moved me. Their estimate was right on and there were no changes when it came time to pay. I would highly recommend them. I also referred them to some elderly clients that were moving out of town and they were very happy with their services as well so this is really two referrals for them in one review! What a great experience this moving was! Everybody knows how stressful moving is but Steve and his 2 coworkers made that to an awesome trip! From the start those 3 guys are professional, really care about your house, boxes, furniture and everything around! They keep it clean, working hard and don't mind to do the extra step and put your bed together because we have this giant bed you need at least 2 guys. It seems like the know every trick to get your couch in over the deck and construct safely a ramp. I would hire them again for any move because they know what they are doing and they are super friendly. I believe in treating them well because they treat your stuff well. Chris and John did a great job with my move. They were easy to work with and spent a good amount of time making sure my items were securely and safely packed. All of my things are going into short term storage and they brought 3 large crates to assist me. I like the idea if the crates being closed and sectioned off. They came on time and didn't need to work the full amount on the estimate which saved me a couple hundred dollars. Absolutely horrible!!! There was no communication for two weeks after pick up. When my boxes and furniture arrived - destroyed! Couch broken, kitchen table benches broken, every box with glass in - broken. My beautiful piece of art work destroyed. I know this is just "stuff" to them but many of the things that were broken, destroyed and lost had sentimental value to me. read more

On April 3-4,2012 I utilized the professional services of this family owned company. I had received five estimates and researched all carefully. They were in the upper range of estimates for timing and costs . The crew were timely, hard working, court.eous and very helpful. I am an experienced and very particular customer having moved 10 times in 35 years. They were careful with my old and valuable antiques, and beloved family heirlooms. I am a very informed consumer about what is and is not required of moving conpanies and did my homework. I will use them again whenever I have the need and have already recommended them to one of ny colleagues who will move this summer. read more

Good experience. Jan, the owner, came out and surveyed my pad. He gave me an estimate but when I pressed for a fixed bid, he gave one. I got 3 and he was the middle. He had a solid pitch and his son runs the job....I like that. They showed up prepared, packed on day 1 and moved on day 2. They underestimated the job and ran 'over budget'. We added some services like unpacking but the owner stuck to his bid. They came back a few days later to pick up the 50 large boxes full of paper and packing materials....no charge. (no fun breaking those down!) The crew worked super hard the entire time. Not sure about those other 2010 reviews but this company has apparently hired a better team and I do recommend them. Get a fixed price and ask them to stick to it. If it is close or even a little higher than your low bid, go with North Bay. Nothing broke, tons of mirrors and antiques, packing was excellent. read more

Terry and Robert could not have been more horrible. Antiques were destroyed, and they did only damage while costing a huge amount. They will go to court for their conduct, by the way, this was not a full move, this was just taking it to their storage space. So bad, we changed movers. They ruined so much. Do not use them. These folks were great! We had two different places where we had to collapse into one new house. This meant storing from one place, then moving Everything during one marathon day to the new place. They were professional throughout, and took great care of our stuff. All the staff were friendly and attentive whenever I made some (nervous) comment or request(!). I would definitely recommend them - the prices were pretty reasonable as well, and we did shop around some before deciding on them. Kudos to Drew and the entire crew! P.S. Most expensive and truly un-professional. Jan the owner came to do the estimate. We agreed on a price, which became 1/3 more the week of the move. Too late to hire someone else. We just went with it. We were told the same driver would move our items across country. IT WAS NOT TRUE.. On our moving day, the movers showed up three hours late. The plan was to ferry two small truck loads to the large van which was supposed to be parked on our road. IT NEVER HAPPENED. We bought boxes from Jan. Not cheap! He also sold us used boxes, which I'm sure he got for free. It was more than a little tacky. The workers were kind and efficient. No one in the crew had brought lunch and everyone was hungry, so I bought takeout Chinese for the whole crew. It was a long day and they did not finish as they had promised. So they had to come back the next day, which was the day we were flying out of California. They promised a full crew, I only got two slow guys who complained. We were shipping our pets on the plane with us. Even though I told them not to pack any paperwork on my kitchen island, they packed the certificates I needed to ship my pets onboard. I had to run to my vet at the last minute to obtain duplicate certificates. They also packed their own garbage in boxes which we paid for and later had to throw away. We later learned they repacked the trucks at their office, creating a dangerous load that would collapse like a house of cards when unpacked. NONE OF OUR ITEMS WERE STRAPPED IN. THEN OUR THINGS ARRIVED IN NEW YORK. The crew in New York arrived three hours late. It took the driver an hour to get the van down our driveway. It was a Saturday, and the crew was not one used to working together, they were all just hired for the day. They did not work for North American. Unpacking the van was very slow. The van was not cross braced correctly. In the middle of the truck, there was an avalanche of our beds, furniture and boxes. Lots of items were broken including most of the blanket wrapped furniture and antique pottery that we watched fall from the top of the truck to the floor. It was such a dangerous avalanche of boxes of books, beds and mattresses that the movers could have been seriously injured and buried. The crew was very tired. They moved slowly. They caused many holes and scratches in our new house. Later, when we made an insurance claim and tried to get them to pay for their damage they said that since we did not ask on the day of the move, they did not have to fix the holes. One of the guys couldn't read, so had to ask the location of each box that was distinctly labeled and half the time he did not put the boxes where we wanted them. Again, no one had made plans to get lunch, so I went out and got Pizza for the crew. It got so late and I was so tired that many boxes got moved to the wrong places. We had to re-move them. I paid thousands of dollars for this move which the increased by 30 percent the week of the move when we had no time to find another mover. It was not worth it. Even though I bought their insurance, I was not compensated fairly for the broken items. read more

This father-son shop is a real mixed bag. Jan the father was repeatedly curmudgeonly, while Lars was kind, helpful and candid. Their prices are high, and you have to pay a lot just to see your stuff once its in their vaults -- and mostly on their terms (2 days notice, minimum 2 hours of labor at $115./hour, not Sunday, etc.) . Better to use the storage spaces outside, or another place. read more

Based on my own horrific experience with this company, I strongly recommend that you do not do business with them! I hired them to move and store most of my worldly goods. I first became concerned that something was amiss when I went to remove a bedroom suite valued at $50,000 and the dresser and mirror could not be located. Despite repeated requests for an invoice North Bay did not bill me for several months after not locating the missing pieces. Then, despite being warned that it was illegal and in violation of Public Utility Commission rules, North Bay auctioned my goods - on my birthday. They then proceeded to sue me for money I did not owe. I countersued claiming over $1 million dollars in damages. North Bay tried, unsuccessfully, to have my suit dismissed. After almost two years of legal wrangling, I agreed to settle my lawsuit. However I refused North Bay's request that the settlement remain confidential and agreed only not to divulge the amount I was paid. The details of this experience that I would not wish on anyone are presented in my upcoming book - Horrific North Bay Move: Anatomy of a Marin County Move Gone Bad. The book is based on the publicly available documents of the lawsuit (CASE NO. CIV1105252) filed in the Marin County Superior Court. Among the facts the book will set forth are: * North Bay gave me quote for ten (10) storage vaults but charged me at various points for 10, 12, 13, 16, 17 or 18 vaults * North Bay claimed all my goods had been auctioned then "found" an antique quilt valued at $10,000 in its warehouse. * North Bay, despite claiming I owed tens of thousands of dollars, admitted that it had no financial records to support their claim. My wife and I selected North Bay Moving (an agent for North American Van Lines) to relocate us from Marin to Los Angeles. Before the move everything seemed great but now, not so much. Here's what happened and suggestions for how you can avoid the same issues we encountered. We were scheduled to move on a Monday. My wife started packing about ten days before that. The Saturday before the move we expected North Bay Moving to send over a few guys to help us pack up the kitchen. No problem. They came over and did a great job packing up dishes, silverware, and pots and pans. But then we received a call from the driver of the truck who'd be moving all of our stuff from Nor Cal to So Cal on Monday. He said he'd like to come over on Sunday and pick up whatever we had packed to help us move more quickly on Monday. Plus, he said he'd have his "A-team" of guys available to help. It sure made sense to my wife and I. Sunday arrived and the driver and two guys show up. The driver says to us that it was very difficult for him to get his truck positioned in front of our apartment (it was an eighteen wheeler). Could we maybe complete the whole move on Sunday? His "A-team" was there to help us pack everything and he'd give us $100 off on a hotel room for the night. My wife and I quickly discussed, and though she thought we weren't ready (and even the driver of the truck thought we weren't there yet) we agreed. Doh! We'd been baited and switched and fell for the story about not having "A-team" guys on Monday and difficulty getting the truck in front of our apartment. As the day wore on and the driver wanted to finish, his guys started shoving stuff into all different types of boxes and overloaded furniture by simply wrapping up dressers with plastic wrap to keep the clothes inside. His crew packed up as much as they thought they could and split - leaving us with many loose items that hadn't or couldn't be packed. At our new home in Los Angeles a different team of North American Van Lines guys was there to unload our stuff. They were not happy with the state of things, blaming the previous crew for items that were too heavy, damage to furniture, and more than 20 unlabeled boxes. They simply shoved my daughter's mattress into the truck with the bed cover and no box! Now we're dealing with the aftermath of a shotgun move. We have many boxes of stuff and no idea what's in them until we go through them from top to bottom. We're also prepping to file claims for all the damaged furniture. My advice to you * Don't let the movers into your house until the date stated in your contract. Period. * Make sure you take out insurance on your stuff (we did). * Create your own labeling system so you can match your boxes to what is delivered on the other side * Stay away from North Bay Moving read more

These guys were great moving our entire house in 7 hours. Though Jan's quote was the second highest I received, I liked him and called him up and let him know I'd like to use them but the quote was too high. He was friendly and professional and we agreed to a lower quote and set a date for 4 days away (it was great they were able to fit me in on my last-minute schedule). The team showed up on time, were super friendly, introducing themselves and letting me know what their plan was, how they worked, how everything would get wrapped. They moved my stuff out efficiently, they brought wardrobe boxes and even offered to pack them for me because I am 7 months pregnant with twins and well, it would have taken me forever! Though we still have a few boxes to unpack not a single piece of my antique furniture is scratched and I haven't found a single broken item...which is amazing! Though I tried to label everything, somethings were not and they were careful to ask me where everything went, saying they didn't want me to have to move anything myself. Before they left, they checked with me multiple times asking if anything needed to be rearranged. No one gripped when I asked them to move my heavy antique desk 3 times! This is the second time that I used this moving company, the first time was 12 years ago for a local move, which went really well, and this is a truly locally-owned company. This was an instate move about 200 miles away. I got a lot of free used boxes from the company ahead of time. On the day that the packers for breakables and my bedroom were to come, only one guy showed of the two expected. He did a great job though, and was also my driver for the whole move. I felt the whole team was very professional. However, while I had an estimate for packing my entire load, I ended up packing about 60-70% of it myself, and the initial cut was that I would pay for all of it. I objected, and they adjusted the amount accordingly without much fuss. read more

ROBBED BY PACKERS I hired Jan Farnsworth to move me from SF to DC. He in turned hired 2 packers - Victor Hinkle and Brian McIntosh - to pack my belongings. When all the boxes arrived in DC, only the empty tray designed to hold my family heirloom silverware set. My silverware was stolen. While upset and distraught, I was glad I had purchased REPLACEMENT INSURANCE. But the joke was on me. North American decided that since my silverware was never put in a box to be moved, it was not covered by the insurance. Furthermore, the Claims Adjuster Tamara George admitted she never spoke to the packers, but took the word of Jan that they were trustworthy. Victor told me that he was surprised that Jan hired him, as he had to take him to court 20 years previously for back wages. Yes Jan hired a disgruntled ex-employee - a stranger from 20 years ago - to pack me. How could he not have more reliable packers? And when my stuff went missing, there was no accountability, no regret, no assistance, just unreturned phone calls and emails, and a denied claim. While it's easy to find bad movers, it's a special treat when you find a professional team that provides the sort of service we should always be expecting, rather than being a rare find. Today, I had such an experience with this crew. They arrived 5 minutes early, made recommendations and took care of my stuff like it was theirs, were respectful and were clearly trained in how to provide good customer service. To find that all four movers were so efficient, nice, and thoughtful about even the most awkward or difficult piece to move, was a real treat. They never complained either. To my surprise, the bill came in under the estimate range. It was like the strawberry with the icing on top. Suffice it to say, i was very pleased at what I expected would be a harrowing experience, but instead was made much more pleasant. We arranged with North Bay to come to our house well over a month in advance. They said they would be there between 8 and 9AM. We called a few days in advance to confirm. Everything was fine with the date and time. When the didn't show up by 9 we called to check. They gave us a revised time of 11 - noon. When they didn't show up we called again. Revised time of 2 -6pm. BTW - they estimated 6 hrs to pack everything up. I asked to speak to the person in charge to complain. He didn't give me a chance to complain. He told me they didn't need my business and to move myself and then he hung up. read more

We got 3 moving estimates (which all came in within 5% of each other) for San Francisco, CA to San Luis Obispo (SLO), CA move (~250 miles). Our 3 bedroom 1600 sq ft move also included a piano and 2 flights of stairs in SLO. We went with North Bay because they were the only ones that would commit to delivering the next day (the other 2 were either in 2 days or within a window of 2-8 days). The pick up team and the delivery team were great. The pick up team of 4 was able to complete the pick up in 3 hours and the delivery team of 3 was able to complete the delivery in 3 hours as well (with the 2 flights of stairs!). Everything was inventoried and they honored the original estimate. read more

They were not the cheapest bid we received, but their quote was much more comprehensive. Jan not only answered all my questions, but also offered some really great packing advice. It took 4 days to pack and load our house, and the crew worked their butts off. I was so impressed by the care and attention they showed, not only to our belongings but also to the walls, floors, etc. Steve was the crew leader, and he was so easy to work with. All of the guys were wonderful: polite, hard working, professional, and eager to please the customer. I should have realized this was not the company I wanted to deal with when the owner, Jan, referred to his notes as moving me to South Carolina instead of Southern California. He was pleasant at our first meeting, a walk through estimate, and had all the right credentials so I very ignorantly didn't get a second estimate. After signing up for the move I had an entire month of anxiety. Communication was largely non-existent or sometimes completely wrong. Deborah would tell me one thing and Jan would tell me something else. Jan gave me the wrong phone # for my driver (who was not my driver) and he gave that man the wrong phone # for me. They all told me different things if they answered questions at all. When I asked for the bill of lading to be re-written with all the changes I was told just to sign and initial. The packers in SF did do an excellent job of moving my piano down a very tricky set of stairs. They did not use the boxes for two important pictures, an electric keyboard, my printer, etc. etc. I asked specifically if one particular room could be unloaded first on arrival at my new place and Will told me yes, it would be done. Upon arrival I reminded Will and he told me we loaded the truck one way and that's how we're going to unload it. The room I requested as first actually became last. The crew was in a hurry as they had a long drive and another delivery so they didn't put things back together: my computer desk, the TV, the entertainment shelves. I could write much more in detail but now I'm tired of dealing with them and just want to put the experience behind me. They keep stressing they have been in business 40 years - their company has aged not for the better and I highly recommend unless you like anxiety you do not use them. read more

Everyone on the crew had an amazing attitude, took incredible care of our goods and home and the final price was lower than the estimate. My experience with North Bay Moving and Storage - NBM&S began with a call to them. Deborah answered and she was very polite and professional. When I asked a question she didn't know the answer to, rather than making something up, she said she didn't know but would find out. I like, really like people who are honest and candid and want to provide correct information. I had e-mailed internet based movers, but I have had a very bad experience with movers and in the end, wanted to work with people I could actually meet in person. I'm glad I did. Moving is a very personal thing, even if a company move. You really want to work with real people, not e-mail or just a voice on the phone. Next, I was visited by the owner who gave an estimate. Like the people he hires, he was forthright, experienced, professional and just a great guy. Next, I met Angie when I needed boxes. She works in the office with Deborah, also exceedingly pleasant and professional. Clearly, this is a customer focused, great operation, but the great experiences weren't finished! Next, the movers came. At the risk of being too personal, this move was part of a divorce. I share this because when I thought I was organized for the estimate, it turns out I wasn't and more boxes were added for additional cost. This was mentioned up front, so there were no surprises and the movers, again, were very clear, explained everything, and all was great. All of my stuff arrived on time and in great shape and at reasonable costs. I cannot recommend NBM&S more. From the first call to delivery, everyone you meet and do business with there are top shelf people. You will not be misled in any way and treated with respect. We used North Bay this August for a local move. The owner did our survey and quote and things looked good until move day. The crew complained all day; they didn't want to wrap furniture & belongings prior to taking out of the house. To make it worse they only worked 4.5 hours. They showed up late both days, their truck was not large enough to hold everything, they had to get a second truck, more complaining. They didn't ask where to put things in the new house and would complain when I asked for them to put in the correct place. I paid for a kitchen & bath pack & unpack. They forgot to pack several cabinets. Well here we are on day two around 8PM, they're not yet finished & I can tell they are taking short cuts to get out of here. Then the owners son comes to and says"We did more than the estimate and you owe us more". I ask why they didn't work the full first day? No answer, you owe us more. Well he was a smooth operator. These guys were unprofessional, dirty, complainers, did not work hard and were not careful. What else can I say: Don't bother even considering this company, save your money. read more
