Many cringe and fear going to the dentist, but at North Bay Smiles, it feels like a trip to the spa as you are warmly greeted and may dip your hands in moisturizing paraffin wax to set while you receive your dental cleaning. At first visit, they send you home with flowers, and they have a special offer for free custom-fitted teeth whitening trays as a new patient if you mention it at your first full visit! My wife and I have been patients at North Bay Smiles for several years and had generally positive experiences with Dr. Szyperski and her team. However, we've decided to discontinue care. We initially chose NBS because they were in-network with our insurance. Over the past year, we began receiving bills for routine cleanings. After paying them, we followed up and were told our insurance denied coverage because the appointments were scheduled a few days prior to our next six-month eligibility window. NBS initially acknowledged this should have been caught when the appointments were scheduled. We understand that insurance coverage can be nuanced, but we also believe it's reasonable to expect an in-network provider to be familiar with a major insurance company's guidelines and help ensure their patients stay within coverage on something as routine as dental cleanings. We brought the issue up to Dr. Szyperski, and she immediately dismissed it as an insurance problem. The coverage rejection was framed as the insurance company being misleading, and there was no accountability or empathy for the nearly $500 we paid out of pocket for services that would normally be fully covered. She even went so far as to ask if we expected her to work for free and confusingly put it on us to decide if we wanted to pay the remaining balance or not (we did). We didn't necessarily enter the conversation looking for a refund or credit, but the lack of any ownership or empathy was disheartening. We don't intend to discourage anyone else from seeking treatment at North Bay Smiles--it was a solid dental practice for us up until that point, and I appreciated that they didn't recommend treatments unless they were absolutely necessary. But at the end of the day, I won't support a business that costs me money and doesn't appear to care. read more

I had high hopes for this dental office when I first started going. At the time, I was living in Petaluma and wanted to make the most of my benefits to stay on top of my dental health. My first visit went smoothly -- I had a cracked filling that was repaired without much issue, and it gave me a sense of confidence in the practice. That changed quickly. The doctor convinced me to place a crown on a tooth that had previously undergone a root canal. My prior dentist had been monitoring it and wasn't in a rush to do anything, but this provider made it sound like a necessary next step for my health. I trusted that advice. But from there, the entire experience became a mess. What should have been two appointments turned into four. I had to come back repeatedly because the temporary crowns kept cracking -- twice. Each time I tried to communicate that something felt off, that it was uncomfortable and gross to have a cracked piece in my mouth, I was met with attitude -- like I was an inconvenience. I wasn't being dramatic; I was just asking for care that should have been basic. What made it worse is that every visit felt rushed. I came in kind of urgently for the final crown because the temporary had come out again, and she barely looked me in the eye. While placing the permanent crown, she let dental debris and chemical dust fall on my face. At one point, she even grabbed my face abruptly. The whole interaction lacked any gentleness or bedside manner. Going to the dentist puts you in a vulnerable position -- you're literally lying down, mouth open, trusting that someone will care for you. After spending close to $2,000 with insurance, the bare minimum I expected was kindness and attention to detail. Instead, I was dismissed repeatedly when the temporaries fell apart, made to feel like I was a nuisance, and given treatment that felt rushed and careless. To top it off, all services must be paid for upfront, and despite the inconvenience and multiple return visits, there was no offer of compensation -- not even a basic toothbrush. And I was now driving close to 40 minutes each way after moving, just trying to get the work finished. I don't know if it's the materials she uses, but the quality felt low, and even now with the permanent crown in, it looks nice but I don't feel confident in the work. I have been going to NBS for over a decade. Their past team was wonderful. I developed a serious health condition 5 years ago that makes me allergic to perfumes and heavily scented items. When I told the dentist I had an allergic react to one of her staffs perfume she said nothing and was not concerned. It was why I put my cleaning off. There was no respect show to areas that were super sensitive since having Invisalign done, When I was getting my teeth cleaned two weeks ago the doctor hit two spots cleaning my teeth --which sent nerve pain in my mouth---making me nearly jump out of the chair, She then tried to clean that area again stating, "I thought I would sneak in there again" when I was clearly in pain. The staff is not trauma informed and I would avoid this dentist, especially if you have dental trauma. Also, the work is not as good as it used to be. A filling should not be falling out after only three years--and the work should be on the dentist to fix if their work does not last longer then this. read more

Dr. Szyperski has been my dentist for a number of years. The dental work she's done has always been very good. I've been satisfied. However, the dental work I need to have done currently is a different story. I had a deep cavity in a lower front tooth. The tooth couldn't be saved. It had to be pulled. Dr. Szyperski offered me only two options to replace the missing tooth. 1) A dental implant the most extreme & expensive option. 2) A stationary permanent bridge. That involved extracting two healthy teeth and using the stronger teeth on either side of the gap to attach the bridge to. Though the cost was less than the first option, I was floored to find out that after insurance my portion would be $3861.00! I decided to wait before scheduling to have the work done. The thought of pulling two healthy teeth and the price left me unsettled. I'd rather be toothless. My bottom teeth are very visible though. I couldn't handle the glimpse of the toothless aging woman when passing a mirror any longer. So, I decided to search the internet for other possibilities. Found 2 options that seemed interesting. At first, I only sought a second opinion from another dentist. Then decided just to change dentists. Not easy to change after 48 years. I'd been through 3 different dental practices changing hands in that same building. Got up the courage and did it anyway. So, I decided to call the office of the dentist my extended family raved about for years. Nearly dropped my teeth (pun without apology) when the receptionist said they had an appointment for the next day. New experience! I'd assumed all dental offices had no available appointments for 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes longer. I arrived, was shown to the room and the dentist came in immediately. I told him my situation and the 2 options I'd found then asked him if they were viable options for me. He said, "absolutely, those two as well as several others. Then told me the one he'd choose if it were him." Happened to be one of the two I'd found on the internet. He said, "it was more than adequate and the least expensive." Couldn't believe it. Instead of $3861.00 it was $251.00 after insurance. Walked to the front desk to schedule an appointment to make the mold. Once again, appointment available the next day. Walked to my car overjoyed in delight. At the same time equally fuming & ticked-off by the withheld information by Dr. Szyperski, who'd only given me the two most invasive, expensive options at the furthest end of the spectrum of possibilities. Previously, while in the office the new dentist came to her defense as many medical professionals will. Everyone on the staff here was courteous and Dr. Szyperski made sure my comfort was her number one priority and kept checking to make sure I wasn't in pain - especially during the times when I had to keep my mouth in an uncomfortable position for a long period of time while she did what she needed to do to fix my tooth. Little things like that were appreciated. Dentists I've gone to in the past hadn't listened to my concerns in the past regarding my sensitivity to Novocaine or cared at all. The folks here did. They were also great with my time and fit my appointments around what works for me. The previous dentist I had would book an appointment and at the last minute would make me reschedule more often than not. 6 years. Wait.. was it 7 years? I don't remember but what I do remember is that I haven't been to the dentist in a very. long. time. One day, I got a job that gave me all the insurance I need. It took me a while to actually use it (because fear) but then finally I sucked it up, told myself to be an adult and go to the goddarn dentist... first. Yes, you heard, first. Out of all the health check ups, I decided to go for the most "grueling" and "anxiety ridden" destination. I like to think that sometimes doing the hard part first will make everything easier. I was nervous to make an appointment because again; it's been practically a decade since I went to the dentist and my previous dentist (who-shall-not-be-named) was not a very good nor had finesse. To be honest, I think he was checked out being a dentist but that's another story. Back to making an appointment! I made the call. Margaret, who I believed answered the phone was incredibly kind and calming. The phonecall was so easy and pleasant, I was actually looking forward to going to the dentist! A date was set up and I was good to go. They sent me papers to fill in prior to coming in to make the future appointment more efficient. I'm the type of gal who loves efficiency and convenience. The day of my first appointment. I arrived at the office, nervous, not knowing what to expect. Well, besides knowingly having cavities and not flossing regularly. But you know what I mean. I step inside and I just loved how quaint the office was. So clean. So tidy. So neat. Everything smelled really good too! I was greeted right away and did not have to wait long. Everyone was super friendly! Before starting getting down to the nitty gritty, Yvonne, the dentist, asked me a couple questions. She wanted to get to know me. My expectations, my fears and what I'd like to know. For me, this is great because I like to know EVERYTHING. I want to know all the things that are going to be done to my mouth and Yvonne was happy to accommodate that. The (first) teeth cleaning. Dina the hygienist was the lucky winner to clean my teeth! She was SO informative and explained everything to me step by step, which I absolutely loved. I need to know these things. It is my mouth after all! It put me at ease whenever she's about to move on to the next step. I did not feel any discomfort, pain and was comfortable the entire time! Dina was also very thorough in cleaning and my teeth felt SUPER clean after all was done. The fillings. The dreaded days. I had to get two sides done. Bottom right and bottom left. Each side had to be done on separate days. So I did them back to back! (I'm little crazy, I know.) This time I was really nervous. Needles in mouth. Loud drilling noises. The possible pain. Oh me! oh my! How was I ever going to survive? Well, Yvonne and Karen assured me that I was going to be a-ok. They were so patient with me and really made sure I was doing ok. The drilling and filling went really smoothly. I felt zero pain and Yvonne took her time to make sure to get every little cavity out of my teeth and Karen was great support! I recovered quickly and had no complications after. I'm tempted to get my top teeth done after that wonderful experience! The (second) teeth cleanings aka the deep cleans. Just like a general clean; the difference is, it is a bit more intensive and takes longer. So all the icky stuff gets off your teeth. Dina did this and as usual she did a superb job and really made sure to get all the fun stuff off of my teeth. To end this, really long review, I'd like to say my anxiety going to the dentist has gone down by a lot and am no longer nervous to come in anymore. I got a veneer put in on my front tooth about two years ago at this office and since then my tooth next to it has been consistently moving backwards and behind the front tooth to the point now where my smile is ruined and when I smile in photographs there's a huge shadow and it looks very bad. I'm very disappointed with this obviously. When I confronted the dentist about it she denied that it had anything to do with the tooth implant when it clearly is directly related and the tooth is clearly a little bit too large for the space. I went to an orthodontist and they are telling me that it will cost $3500 to get it to move back in alignment with my front tooth using a set of Invisalign retainers. The original tooth cost around $1700 so it's going to cost twice that amount to fix the damage that's been done to my smile. Unless this dentist is willing to pay for me to fix my smile I do not recommend using this dentist because of these shady practices and her inability to admit that something that she did to my mouth is causing me this amount of disappointment and frustration. read more

She has that cold dentist/doctor way of speaking to you. Sometimes I feel like doctors don't stop to think what kind of background you might come from that might have brought you to be under your current situation/circumstance. Or that because of your background you might have these conditions/issues you are having to deal with. I've had the privilege of having had some really great dentists that made sure to be empathetic, kind, and considerate of their patients when explaining certain aspects of their procedures/care. I wish more doctors would take this approach in their treatment of patients, because lord knows going to the dentist sucks enough without the feeling that this upper-middle class white person is judging you based on your teeth. All I can say is, I lucked out when I needed to have a tooth looked at on a Saturday, right after moving to Sonoma. North Bay Smiles was the only office that was open. They also happened to be a top-notch dental practice, so I'd found my new dentist! This was about the time my teeth started experiencing all sorts of issues -- crowns, fillings, chipped teeth (wear your night guard kids!), tooth implant. I've been *very* thankful that I chanced on Yvonne and her awesome team. Everyone is super friendly, kind and upbeat, and professionals at what they do -- which has made getting through a gauntlet of repairs as easy going as possible. I would not recommend this practice. I went for a standard cleaning (100% covered twice a year by my insurance). Our initial visit went fine. The dental hygienist recommended a deep cleaning and I said to get my records from my previous dentist because I've had it done previously. I never heard back from them regarding it until my 2nd visit approx 6 months later (again for a standard cleaning). At that time she again recommended a deep cleaning and said will look into getting my previous records and see how much insurance will cover. Then I receive a bill in the mail a couple of wks later for $60. I called them to find out what that was for, and pretty much the dentist (Yvone Szyperski) got on the phone and said "looks like someone dropped the ball by not informing you that you were getting a little more than just a standard cleaning because you have periodontal disease and will need to pay this amount". I told her this is unacceptable as this was never communicated to me, I thought I was getting routine standard cleaning. Then she says "I don't understand what you are looking for, do you not want to pay the $60, I pay a copay when I go see my doctor". uh duh! why would I want to pay money that I should've never been charged in the first place??? And you pay a copay when you go see a physician, not a dentist for a routine cleaning which all dental insurances cover! And when I told the dentist that I will not be returning to their practice she did not seem to be one bit concerned, and said "ok. let us know where we can send your oral xrays". I am furious with their lack of transparency, professionalism, and poor communication. It is really hard to find a dentist that is really just interested in treating you, and not trying to make extra money by recommending an insane list of expensive treatments you need to get. Needless to say I will NOT be going back to this place again, but I am hoping after reading this review they improve their services for their existing and future patients. read more

This office is great! The staff is all very friendly, and always accommodating when I call ahead needing to schedule or change my appointment. They're quick and efficient when I'm there, and do a good job at the same time. I like that they advocate the services they think I need for my dental health but don't push them on me in a way that makes me feel like they're just out to secure the sale like some dental offices I've been to who bully you or make you feel guilty to get you to agree to services you can't afford at the time. After putting in a claim with the better business bureau north bay smiles made sure that my credit wasn't affected by their mistake and apologized profusely for making this mistake. After calling me to make sure they had settled the issue (I was still frustrated by the mistake but I felt they did all they could to rectify the situation), the doctor herself called me today to make sure that my credit had not been affected and to once again apologize. I am very satisfied with how this issue was dealt with, and I did feel that they were truly sorry. The pros: A. Karen, the dental hygienist is super sweet and informed me of what was happening along the way. B. The office was clean, and the dentist seemed competent C. At the first visit the dentist asked what was important to me & seemed to want to try and get to know me The cons: A. The front desk person who does billing is very nice but doesn't seem to know how to bill properly. My husband and I both went in for fillings. For some reason they wanted to charge me an extra $25 fee that they didn't charge my husband. They said the insurance company is the one who charges it. That's weird because we both have the same insurance so why wouldn't we both be charged the $25 fee? When I asked the billing lady this question she said "I don't know where these numbers come from the computer just comes up with them"... umm isn't that your job to know? Also when I called my insurance company they said that the dentist office should not be charging me this fee. When I called the dentist office back and told them this they apologized. When I went in the next time the dentist try to explain this by saying that since I was a new patient they were just trying to learn my insurance. B. We paid our portion of the bill upfront the day of service. Then about a week after the date of service we received a bill in the mail for several hundred dollars. When I called the dentist office they said that they hadn't received insurance reimbursement yet but once they did the bill would be adjusted, so not to worry about it at that time. Well then why send out the bill? The receptionist had obviously communicated my concerns to the dentist. The next time I went in she said it would require too much time to send out two bills.... doesn't it take way more time to send out two bills than just to wait until the insurance pays their portion and then send out a bill? And the dentist said something that made me really upset and is the main reason I'm not going back: "we are billing your insurance as a courtesy for you, some dentists don't even take insurance".... oh I'm sorry that my insurance is inconvenient for you. I will take my insurance and go to another dentist who is happy to bill Insurance for me. C. I considered going back to give the office another chance. But then I was talking to a coworker one day and she told me how unhappy she was at this office as well. I think the office takes so much care and pays so much attention to detail due to the amazing women who work there. The office is very female based which I personally like as a lady because I feel my needs are being met with extra care. I've been going to North Bay Smiles for many years and I've yet to have a bad experience. Everyone there is always so cheery and wonderful to be around, at times I forget that I'm at a dentist office !
