Shenandoah River State Park - Red Tail Ridge Trail view

Often times, the national parks get the best territory and the states get leftovers. However, the…read moreShenandoah River State Park, down the mountain from well known Skyline Drive and its accompanying federal parkland, is by no means inferior. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

I travel and stay at a lot of parks during the course of the year, and I have only repeated a few…read moreof them. This location is incredible, rich with things to do, views to see, and adventures to have with enough time. The cabins are gorgeous, fair warning that there is no television, but honestly who cares?! I had great phone signal which almost never happens on these excursions, and I loved making a fire in my fireplace and sitting on the porch with coffee for sunrise, which I could see from Cabin 11. This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

We found all the staff at Eagle's Nest to be very pleasant, friendly and accommodating. We had about 15 rigs, and rented one cabin. Paul placed us in sites very near each other, and close to the pavilion which perfectly met our needs for the event. The pavilion near the creek, with electricity, lighting, a nearby restroom, and running water, was a great set-up for our group meetings and meals. Paul even set up a fire ring near the pavilion for our evening campfire and music. The camp facilities were very clean and level, with full services at each site. The restaurant on site (Fireside Inn) has an extensive menu. Try the cauliflower soup ... it is FABULOUS. Eagles Nest is conveniently located near Cumberland, MD - a great local tourism spot with museums, shops, restaurants, and a scenic railroad ride. The campground is still a work in progress and we look forward to going back to see how it is coming along. Paul has a great vision for further improvements and is working hard toward that end. With a mix of seasonal and transient residents, most in self-contained units, there is little need for public facilities. Some in our group might have preferred a public bathhouse (in future development plan), but the lack of a public bathhouse would not prevent our return. Happy trails ...

We had a great experience at Eagle's Nest September 2019, our 39th annual 'Rolling Thunder' rally. The camping, accommodations, food and entertainment were some of the best we have enjoyed. I enjoyed flyfishing on Patterson Creek, on the banks of which I pitched my tent. The Club had a great time and we will surely return in the future. Thanks Paul, et. al.! John T. Our site was large, shaded and best of all level. No leveling blocks needed. Sites are gravel, clean and well maintained. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! Well stocked store, and they will make and deliver pizza right to your campsite. Typical KOA amenities, and they have a stocked catch and release pond on site for those who love to fish. Lots of activities for the kiddos, too. The road in is a little hilly and several curves, but big rigs shouldn't have any trouble navigating it - the signage on the road is great (funny sign on the road that said "1/2 miles Don't Give Up." Lol). We're more "state park people" in that we enjoy the space and solitude and we don't have kids traveling with us (just dogs), so we don't typically need all the on-site activities. But this week we needed full hook ups, and this park gave us that feel. With so much to do in the area, we didn't get to it all, so we'll be back and we'll definitely stay here again.

Lots of larger gravel. The only lighting after dark they had was some that came on as I walked by them attached to trees. We were surrounded by forest so it was kind of scary being out there at 9 in the pitch black. There are lots of weeds that give the dogs briars in their feet. They have a trail you can go on that was nice but after 20mins my dog was ready to turn around. I never found out where that would have taken me lol. That was really the safest bet for walking him. There is many large rocks there. There isn't much grass. The pond is tiny.
