My man had to give me a pep talk before I walked into North Bay Computer Systems with his (what turned out to be)virus laden computer. I was intimidated, panicked, thinking I , the technophobe was going to walk into a cavernous spaceship surrounded by piercing hardcore computer aficionados who were going to eye me with disdain and pity and then charge an arm and a leg because they thought I was so stupid. Instead, I walked into a comfy, welcoming store and received the best service I've ever had in a long time. NBCS staff were unpretentious, helpful, relaxed and well, educational. And no, they didn't charge an arm and a leg. It was a reasonable price for the issue. A year later, it was my turn to have a computer meltdown. This time, Ryan was my superhero of the day. He was like the Flash, taking care of a few customers over the phone, taking care of me, all the while, fingers whirling on the keyboard as he worked on something else. He was never flustered and always cheery the whole time and never aghast by what my computer meltdown was (it was so obvious and so simple to fix that I won't even divulge on it). These guys are great. They were able to fix our computer really quickly and we went from 160 gb hard drive to a 500! It just screams and working just perfectly. The things I like best about Northbay Computers is a) they know what they are doing and b) they are NICE! There are lots of computer fixers out there who know what they are doing but they just can't communicate with us non-computer expert folks. And this is what sets them apart. I would really recommend them. They explained what was wrong so we could understand and were honest about time and costs. I can't speak to whether their prices are reasonable; computers are expensive to fix, regardless. But we got our comptuer fixed for less than it would've cost to replace it and they were very honest that they would fix our computer rather than replace it so we really liked that. read more

I've been using another computer repair company for years, but it can be a long turnaround time, so when I saw all the great reviews on Yelp for NorthBay, I decided to try them. My laptop crashed - wouldn't recognize the charger. I had been through several chargers, thinking that was the issue, but it wasn't. I went to another company in Marin (highly rated - see my other reviews), and waited and waited - they didn't show up to their place of business. Given that I was panicking about losing my data, I called NorthBay. Ryan was awesome and told me to do some tests on my computer to see if I could get it going on my own (who does that these days??), and then gave me the name of another business that could help me (pretty specialized with my particular problem). This all - of course - was free. He was knowledgeable and generous with his time. I didn't take my computer in to NorthBay that day, and in the end decided that I needed a new laptop. But when I DO need a repair shop, I will definitely go to NorthBay. I will pay for service, and that's what NorthBay and Ryan give! read more

A couple of months ago Scott came to our house to straighten out a mess we had created with our imap/pop accounts. Super professional, friendly, reasonably priced...and he got the job done pronto as well as explaining clearly to us so we could avoid it again. Today, I took my new Lenovo Yoga laptop into Ryan at the shop. My large monitors had stopped recognizing my computer and I couldn't see anything. He Fixed and explained all in about an hour, and then he checked my anti-virus software and set me up with a a great back up drive. It was such a pleasure to work with someone so knowledgeable and competent...and he loves what he does and is happy to teach. This computer repair shop is great. Before, I had my laptop serviced with Geek Squad, which cost more money and wasting my time when they couldn't solve the issue. After being referred to NB Computer Systems, my experience was super pleasant. I had Ryan service my laptop, which was 8 years old. He did a great job in giving real pointers/options in restoring lost files. His advice was: 1) charge me in restoring my lost files and fixing the bugs, which could cost me an arm and a leg. Or option 2) buy a new laptop and charge a few bucks to retrieve and transfer the files onto the new laptop. The first options would have cost more in the long run, so I went with the 2nd option. I went to purchased a new laptop and had my old files restored and transferred to the new laptop. Ryan did it really quick without any BS. He is straight to the point in realistic thinking in ways that is cost efficient for you. This company does not over charge, nor did Ryan charge me for wasting his time with millions of questions. I just returned from Northbay Computer Systems. As usual their service was excellent and prompt. I have used their services for years and ALWAYS with great results. This morning was no exception. I just bought a first rate Dell computer with top-of-the-line cpu, lots of memory, ssd, etc. I needed to move two hard drives from my old system and realized that by the time I figured out where the data cables were on the new motherboard, then dealt with the fancy engineered case, etc., I could spend half the day and even then get it wrong. Instead, I called ahead and arrived at NBCC by 9:30. They went right to work and had it all humming perfectly in the time I went across the street for coffee. Sometimes I need more complicated work and they do that just as well. The fees are beyond reasonable, especially since they always get the work done right the first time. I'm not really a novice. I've owned and run two computer companies in the years from 1980--2002. One of the first Novell certified technicians, a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, etc. Installed and maintained the wide-area networks in the Marin school district for a number of years. (Though having been out of the field for 15 years makes me only competent enough to be dangerous.) I can say without equivocation that John and his cohort are among the best I have ever seen, and the most honest. I recommend them highly. read more

OMG I wish I'd discovered this place sooner! After a disastrous experience with the Geek Squad at Best Buy, I decided to go elsewhere when I was experiencing computer issues this time. This little company is fantastic! I brought my over-the-top gaming machine to get looked at for an HD failure. They ran some initial tests and basically said that in all likelihood, if I simply bought a new hard drive, transferred the data over, and installed it, my machine would be up and running. How FREAK'N HONEST is that??? Of course I left the machine with them to get fixed (I'm all thumbs when it comes to fixing computers). Plus, they found some errors that my anti-virus scan software was throwing out and suggested I got rid of it... I said sure and they did. In fact, they optimized my machine for me instead of just slapping in the new HD and calling it a day. So my experience with North Bay Computer Systems was awesome. They know their stuff, they're really honest, and they go out of their way to make sure your machine is working properly when you go to pick it up. Was looking for a place to get my laptop's motherboard fixed or replaced. Based on the number of 5-star-ratings posted here, I drove from Petaluma to this place. I should have investigated more; their most recent laptop "repair" mentioned here was replacing a CMOS-battery. James was friendly but exclaimed, "That's a laptop!", meaning they do not repair them. Why doesn't it specifically say so here? He seriously suggested I'd try a place across the Bay in Albany. So this trip to San Rafael was in vain, but I luckily found a superb laptop repair shop in Petaluma. read more

Its hard to find a good competent computer technician, especially at reasonable rates. These guys were recommended to me by a supervisor at work to do some maintenance work and clean-up on my laptop. They are very reliable, will turn your machine around very quickly, and know what they're doing. I recall the rate as being about $75/hr, but it may have gone up. read more

I happen to contact the young man named Ryan who was very energetic and enthusiastic and talk to me in detail about what I hoped to accomplish at the store. I just had an excellent experience with this company. I contacted them because I visited Las Vegas last weekend and (unknowingly) stayed at the same hotel that was hosting a worldwide hacker convention. My friend's husband told me I should destroy my laptop and cell phone if I used any wifi during my visit and I was a bit freaked out to say the least. My 12-year old was invited by Microsoft to upgrade her operating system to Windows 10. So she did. Afterwards, she restarted the computer and her screen was totally black. The computer was dead as a brick. I took the computer in to John @ Northbay, he told me the Dell hardware was too old to support the latest version of Windows. He went on to say I could pay him a bunch of money to make things work again (back to windows 8), but that I should probably just buy a new computer. So that's what I did. John then transferred all of my daughter's data to the new computer. He also upgraded her headphone and mouse so that she could play Minecraft with her friends.
