Okay, first off, THIS NOT THE LOCATION ON THE WATERFRONT! So, ignore all the comments on the chowder, fish n chips, and the waterside dining. Go to page for the location on Ruston Way for that stuff. This location is the wholesale and retail warehouse on 56th. Now that the PSA is completed, this IS the place to go if you're planning a meal and need a shoal of fish with which to make it. It's also the place to go for friendly, knowledgeable people who will help you with your decision making and purchase. They stock primarily fish from the PNW/Alaska. There are no worries about stinky, old fish here, as the processing is happening on location. Along with the fresh product, they also carry frozen products like squid if they're not produced locally. Their selection of smoked salmon seems a little smaller than that at Ruston, but their fish selection is more varied. The service there is top notch. On a recent trip I called in advance to see if they had 5 lbs of halibut carcasses (I was making soup). I didn't leave a name, only saying that I'd be in soon, and when I got there they'd already put it aside for me without even having a firm order. OMGG LET ME TELL YOUU!!!! This place has the best value clam chowder I've ever had! And this is coming from someone who went to college in the south and have been to a lot of different chowder places both fancy and no thrills. First of all, the vibes of this place is really cool. The servers are very nice and will try to recommend her favorite chowder style which is something that I really appreciate as I usually don't know what to get. The chowder itself is very rich and creamy but at the same time, it's also not too overwhelming to the point where it gets tiring pretty quickly. The price is at around 6 dollars if I remember for a pretty big cup which is terrific compared to the expensive prices around the area as it is along the waterfront. Parking is also very easy to find. I've been here a lot of different times and never had a problem finding parking day or night. Overall, would definitely come back and will always recommend this place to people visiting Ruston Way!! read more

It reminds me of Steamers, my old favorite little fish restaurant until it shut down. Same concept, order at the register, sit outside where you like and enjoy the waterfront. It feels PNW to eat here. It feels like home. The food is great! I've had the cioppino, fish and chips and clam chowder. Can't wait to try the fish tacos. Picked up some tuna for a sushi rolling party. The guy who helped me was very knowledgeable. I appreciated that he wouldn't sell me salmon because he wasn't sure which one was sushi grade. (It was in a back freezer that someone else packed and knew which one was which.) Ultimately, I bought double what I needed, but it was so reasonably priced that it wasn't a big deal. The fish and chips were good. Wasn't too thrilled with the coleslaw but the fish itself had good flavor. Nice and crispy outside and flaky tenderness inside. I got the halibut. Wasn't expecting it to be $21 cause I didn't see any visible signs with pricing. I gave 4 stars because there's no one helping to guide the lines. Some rope and sign would help out tremendously. I wasn't the only one confused that's for sure. Seating is outside uncovered. FYI No public bathroom. There is one close by, but the homeless shave and bathe in there too... soooo, yeah. read more

I have been coming here for several years now and in all the purchases I have made I had one bad experience where the salmon was bad. Not because they were selling it old but it came from the Ocean bad. I went back and not only did they genuinely apologize, they replaced my order plus. We are talking one purchase of 100'at least. Their fish and seafood are amazingly fresh and while you do pay a bit more than the grocery store, freshness is amazing and so different. I LOVE this place and their customer service is top notch. This is our go to fishmonger. Always has the freshest seafood and the staff really goes above and beyond. The stuffed halibut is amazing, great selection of King Crab legs, great Dungeness prices. Cannot recommend this store high enough! We will not buy seafood anywhere else. read more

This is just a retail location, which I would recommend keeping in mind when visiting and reviewing. It's a great place to go when shopping for fish! We got an amazing filet of halibut for $16/pound and MMMMM! It was the best fish I've ever had, let alone made! So fresh, no bones. And for $16/pound, that price is unheard of. We also got some Manila clams, which were very tasty. The oysters we got were on the large side, but we should've given them a look before buying. They tasted just fine, but a bit big for eating raw. I can't believe it took me 7 years of living in the area to go here. I'll make this part of my grocery shopping for sure. I highly recommend. read more

This is such a convenient fish market for anyone in the south part of Tacoma. The fish is beautiful and service is friendly. We like to get oysters here for grilling - they are lovely, we like the medium sized Pacific ones but they have other more fancy varieties also. Don't forget they close on Sunday! read more

In the most unassuming location, this branch of Northern Fish is a great place to pick up fresh seafood. Fred H. really hit the nail on the head with his review. I will supplement his. The quality is very, very high at these shops. As a regular customer for over ten years at these locations, I have never a bad, or even mediocre, piece of fish. The prices are excellent and they run sales and specials all the time. It is worth signing up for their newsletters just for the sale alerts. Perfect example: fresh wild salmon steaks are on sale this week for $12.50 a pound...if you shop for fish, you know this is cheeeeeap! This is one of the only places in Tacoma where you can get sushi quality tuna. They sell the already blocked, frozen kind - which I prefer to work with when prepping for my big family. No bloodlines, no waste, neatly trimmed. No brainer. However, be safe and call ahead to check stock! Excellent shellfish, cod, etc. They also carry quite a bit in their frozen case. Last but not least, they have excellent smoked fish in a variety of flavors here. They will give you a sample if you ask. I've never had a smoked fish here I didn't enjoy. At one point, they had a brown sugar smoked salmon I really liked...I don't know if they still carry it. Fish lovers: shop here! read more

Northern Fish (NF) sells fish wholesale. They also have this one retail store in their headquarters. NF has fish flown in from Alaska (hence "Northern"). The fish is fresh (or sometimes fresh frozen) and is always of great quality. They are among the first to get in Copper River salmon, and also salmon from similar quality streams in Alaska. Their kippered and smoked salmon is very good. I especially also like that they have Dungeness crab, halibut, true cod, ling cod, and tilapia. Never tried tilapia before? This is a VERY mild white fleshed fish. Don't treat it roughly. I like to poach mine, or sometimes I quickly pan fry it. It doesn't have much flavor of its own, so serve some type of sauce or seasoning on the side (soy sauce works just fine, if you like that flavor). If you are unsure about handling and/or cooking of fish, ask them. They have knowledgeable people who are only too happy to help. They also sell a limited range of fish-related products, such as tartar sauce and Old Bay seasoning. This is a good, trustworthy, reliable fish monger. Note that they have recently opened a subsidiary location at 2201 Ruston Way in Tacoma, 272-4104. This place also has a small sit-down bistro. read more

Not nearly as exciting as their Ruston Way location, this warehouse site lacks the view and ambiance along with the kitchen to get lunch. The products are mostly the same, but perhaps not the same turnover as the salmon and crab were better at the Ruston location. I'd guess that this location supplies Ruston so the quality might have been due to the time of year. My visit to the Ruston location was during the busy holidays while the South Tacoma visit was in the dead of winter. Regardless, both have the same good prices. read more

Went in a little after 1630 which the store closes at 1700. I was relieved that we had made it since I had been wanting to go here since reading about on yelp. When we got in the store workers had already cleared out everything in the display case except for some salmon that was over cooked and dried out. I know how to smoke fish and other meats and what was there was past due and needed to thrown out. A store should only start to close after it has locked it doors and not during hours of operation. read more

This is not the location with the bistro. That said, I stumbled upon this retail outlet attached to their head quarters, on the way to the Mexican Restaurant, Monteczuma's. Am I ever glad I did! The have the best have the best smoked salmon around. I smoke my own fish and can never match what they do. I have tried smoked salmon from famous smoke house but nothing compares. They also are one of the larger fish wholesalers in the Seattle-Tacoma area and their fish is always as fresh as you can buy in the area, that is unless you go catch it yourself. They also will smoke your own fish down at their S 56th St. location. I have them smoke some of my fish every year and its always a nice treat. read more

I agree with the location being a bit out of sorts but after sampling the smoked fish...yeah I was hooked. Yes bad joke but if you want quality this is the place. I travel up here on business from California and was told about the service that went along with the products. My son went on a fishing trip for his 21st birthday, which cost $200 per person. He caught his first steelhead! We took this fish to be smoked and had quite an experience. The girl running the storefront quoted my 3 different prices, seemed completely lost, and said she was new. She had been left alone there. To her rescue cones a young man who I was told had started there that day. They figured out a price, filled out a card with my information, inserted it into a small plastic sleeve, placed it with our fish into a box, and made the fish disappear. I received the card back, but the fish was gone. I was notified that the fish was ready for pickup, but then advised that the fish was never even logged into the smoke room. I was given smoked salmon and refunded the money I had paid, but would not EVER recommend this business. read more
