This is an amazing service-oriented business. During one of the coldest days, my fireplace decided it didn't want to work anymore. I called and they promptly sent Eric to clean the unit and solve the problem. I live on Social Security. Eric and Bonnie ( the contact lady at their office) worked very hard to solve my problem as quickly and inexpensively as possible. My unit was very old (25+ years). It was decided that the logs and gas pieces needed to be replaced. Eric installed the new items within an hour, cleaned up everything and even offered to bring in my trash cans from end of the driveway. Polite, courteous, efficient service above and beyond. Maybe the technician who came out was having a bad day. Requested service cuz flames not high on gas fireplace. Guy rearranged logs, vacuumed the screen and cleaned the glass doors and not sure what else and charged a lot of money and told us it might be the valve and didn't know if he could get it and I paid him and he left. (And I now have to put gloves on and cover the white frame that is holding the logs cuz he messed it up.) Wish I had read the reviews prior to the appointment. Would not recommend. read more

We built our home in 2013 and the gas fireplace in our finished basement put out all the heat & flame of a butane lighter so we wanted to upgrade it to a more robust unit. Northfield Fireplace was able to recommend a superior replacement that fit inside our existing frame and their installation technicians were able to make the swap without damaging the mantle in any way and it looks (and feels) fantastic! DV gas inserts aren't cheap, but I wanted something that was aesthetically pleasing, cozy, and also could serve as a backup heating source during a power outage in the wintertime. Found another more competent chimney sweep - about half the cost of Northfield and they re- Cleaned and did a much more thorough inspection - including getting on a ladder and checking from the roof. Then offered a solution for my issues for about a tenth of the expense Northfield insisted was necessary. These guys are arrogant hacks. read more

Salesperson really lacked information - I asked specifically about the color of the showroom's kitchen island. Salesperson then said that we would not have to pay list price, and that he could bring the price down 5-10%. We waited around for a quote and he brought it back $500 OVER list price. He said that island color was a more expensive option. Funny they had it in the showroom marked with a price. Salesperson was rude and unprofessional when I called him on that. Hard pass on this store, waste of time . We found the same thing at a different place for thousands of dollars cheaper with better customer service. read more

bought an 8,000$ grill for my backyard 2 years ago from Northfield fire place and grill. It was burning the food and even burned the temperature gage, Called them and they sent a repair man who could not fix the problem. Called the manufacturer under warranty and they sent a repair man from Complete appliance who found that the grill was insatlled incorectly without a regulator which caused the grill to burn the food. After having issues with them a few years ago I decided to give this another try. I bought a Blaze BBQ grill and was offered delivery and hookup. I paid in full 18 days ago, received call after 3 days that grill was in. First, second and third delivery promise broken. Poor communication and still no grill or timeline. Chimney Sweeping Before you hire Fireplace Shoppe to do a "chimney sweeping" let me explain their process. I wanted a simple maintenance chimney sweep. Their service is not a chimney sweep, it is a camera inspection. You pay $250 minimum for them to come in and do a 15 minute camera inspection per chimney ($1000/per hour is a nice profit center). If you have any "breeches" or the camera shows any "code violations" they will not sweep your chimney. They will show the code violations to you on the camera (not sure what code they are referring to, they do not tell you, and they average person has no idea what they are looking at), and refuse to sweep the chimney as they cannot take "any liability" for removing creosote or build up because things are not up to code. They will then show you one option for fixing your violations which is the product for which they are an "authorized dealer", Heat Shield, which is a coating applied inside the chimney. The price for repair of my standard chimneys was $6000 each, even though one is rarely used. Trust me if your chimney is over 10 years old, you will have by their definition, code violations (hence no sweep and the Heat Shield option offered). So what I got was a $500 bill, no chimney sweep, and offered a $12000 "fix" for two chimneys, and no offer to credit the $500 to the repair if I chose to do that. This is not a chimney sweep company, they are a grill and fireplace accessories company that has discovered a way to finesse customers into "fixing" their chimney with a product that they are paid to sell. I should have known when they called me in the summer (call center?) to set up a date to sweep, read inspect via camera, my chimney. Go with true chimney sweep company or a mason and save yourself $500. read more

Mom's exterior chimney was in desperate need of rebuild. Home was built in 1962. John and his masonry partner (Rob or Ron) completed the tear down and rebuild in about 6 hours. See pictures of before and after. I would definitely recommend, although you may need to schedule 3-4 weeks in advance. Apparently, John's schedule is very booked up due to his masonry skills, chimney knowledge, and lots of weather worn chimneys to repair. Probably the worst customer service I've experienced. They installed a wood burning stove for us in 2014. We have had nothing but issues. They have come out to service it numerous times. Each time was something else but never really solved the problem. Finally they just said tough luck. Our stove shot sparks out and I emailed the manufacturer who again said to contact the installer/distributor. Again nothing. Just had the chimney cleaned due to a chimney fire. And the tech said whoever did the instal did something wrong or the liner should be replaced. We called AGAIN. Rather than come out and look and see what the issue is they said it's $350 to come out and we are wrong. I have never experienced such lack of service and concern. I also thought this was a small local place that would stand behind their products. I certainly would never purchase from them again. read more

An elderly widow next door to me in our condo complex called these people to "clean her chimney." They came out and "cleaned" her GAS FIREPLACE exhaust stack & charged her $150!!! I recently (this past winter) had a complete remodel of my dining/living room done. I really wanted to add a fireplace to my living room. More for the ambiance, not so much as a heat source. My contractor recommended visiting the showroom of The Fireplace Shoppe to explore options and gather information about the best possibilities. It was a good call. When I went to their store, I explained my situation. The salesman was very knowledgable, and explained the kinds of fireplaces that were workable for my home. I decided on gas - I didn't want the hassle of cleaning, maintaining, bringing in wood, etc. I couldn't be happier with my new fireplace ! I live in a small colonial style house, so we decided on a Slimline model which didn't take up as much space. Everything from initial contact, sales, and delivery/installation went very smoothly. Communication was good - each tie they came out to my house I or my contractor always got a confirmation/reminder call the day before. It was a rather cold, windy day when the unit was first installed. The installers recommended putting a wind guard/shield around the vent, at no extra charge. This unit provides radiant heat, and really does warm the room quickly and efficiently. The model I selected did not come with a remote control, but was available as an additional add-on. I am so glad I did purchase it. The remote has settings to control flame height, as well as turning on/off when set temperature is reached. Every employee from The Fireplace Shoppe was professional and pleasant to work with - the sales staff, the installers, and the person doing phone reminders. I spent approximately $1000 or more two years ago to have my ventless gas fired fireplace serviced. For some reason I can't get it to relight in a timely manner when I turn it off. It often takes more than 30 minutes to get it relit after trying multiple times. I called for service today October 9th and was told they are booking service calls now for dates in December. You can buy a product from anywhere but if when you need service you are told you have to wait two months before they can come out to solve your problem in my opinion that shows a total lack of compassion for their customers once the sale is made. The service and follow up keeps the customer sold. Before you purchase anything from Northfield Fireplace ask how long it will be for service if a problem should arise. And hope they are telling you the truth. read more

The installation was great too, with no mess at all, and everything working as promised. And then, after turning off the gas at the end of last winter, and me being unable to figure out where to light the pilot light this winter, Northfield came out and rescued me. Terrible experience!!!!! I had a time frame between 9-12 to get my fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected. It was almost 1 and there was no one in sight and I had no calls to let me know they'd be running late. Two gentlemen arrived at 1 and seemed friendly, but offered no explanation of the tardiness. I was pleased to see that they were putting covers over there feet, so they wouldn't track dirt and mud inside. After a few minutes one of the men walked outside with the covers on and tracked dirt over the floor when he came back inside. The service was fairly quick, but after they left I realized that one of the fireplace doors was broken. I called the business a half dozen times in the week following and left messages, but my calls were never returned. Terrible read more

Like many people I put off having my chimney properly cleaned and inspected for many years. Last year on two separate occasions I contacted a couple of "Chimney sweepers" but they failed to show up. So this year I decided to go with a reputable business that specializes in cleaning chimneys. This company was fantastic. I scheduled a date and time and they arrived on schedule. They were professional and courteous and did a great job. I had a couple of issues that they handled to include a loose vent and a flue that occasionally got stuck. Both issues were handled and they left my fireplace area absolutely spotless. I really appreciated this as we were hosting a dinner that evening. One caveat would be that these guys are in demand and you may have to schedule a date well in advance especially after September. So book them early but they are worth the wait. I am glad I made the decision to hire this company. GREAT JOB. read more

A simple misunderstanding/mistake goes horribly wrong. Forgive my noobishness at the time but Like most things around the house I contract out with, I knew nothing about fireplaces when I went to the Northfield fireplace shoppe. Decemeber of 2015 I was looking to replace an old non working small box with a better up to date unit. I was asking the salesman "Bill O." a bunch of different questions about fireplaces as I did not know a lot. (Still don't know a lot). Anyways he was showing me 3 main types of gas fireplaces: Vented, Ventless and some really expensive cold air line fed one that the models went for $3,0000 and up. So now I am deciding between ventless and vented. The pros and cons of each. When Bill O. showed me a unit called "Rustic Timbers" he came out and said "This unit is interchangeable" I responded "so it can burn gas logs and wood?" Bill confirmed. Bill also did not correct me days later when I placed the order over the phone and I was raving about how cool an interchangeable unit would be as I could burn the gas logs in the summer and real wood for better heat in the winter. So fast forward to the middle of January 2016. The installer was very polite and friendly and did a fantastic job with the unit. I asked him about changing out the logs and he raised a brow and said "Well you're not supposed to change them out all the time". This was fine with me as I was only intending to make the switch once or twice a year like I do with my water line filters in the house. So middle of February it was still cold outside and I was really wanting some more heat in that room so I took out the gas logs and cleaned up the sand and artificial embers. Thinking to myself this seems like kind of a bitch to do. Never the less I vacuumed up all the sand and embers and neatly sealed them in separate ziplock bags. Got some wood logs from Giant Eagle and when I placed them on the grill I noticed there was some kind of proprietary set of hooks in the back that one of the back gas logs would "hook onto". This didn't seem right to me and made the stacking of the wood logs more difficult. Got them on anyway and fired up the gas line. It was nice and warm. But here's where the trouble starts! The gas pilot in the box no longer had that "resistance when turning the dial" and would not shut the gas off! Its all good because I was able to shut it off from another point in my garage. after the unit cooled back down the dial was functional again, turning the gas on and up or off. I called the Fireplace shoppe and asked Bill O. about this and he then said "you are not supposed to burn wood on a gas fireplace ever. I reminded him that he told me this unit was interchangeable and now Bill O. completely denies saying anything of the sort. Bill O. also refused to take back the STILL WORKING UNIT even with a modest restocking fee. I asked him if he could just set me up with a log lighter and basic wood burning unit but he refused to do anything with the Rustic Timbers gas log unit. Looking back on all this I do believe maybe this was just a simple misunderstanding. Perhaps Bill O. was thinking my box was interchangeable but why did he not correct me while placing the order for it over the phone when I was going on about how cool an interchangeable GAS AND WOOD unit would be? Lesson learned. From now on i'm only dealing with Lowe's and Home Depot because even when stuff goes wrong, these big box stores ALWAYS make it right. Now I am out $1139.02 The Breakdown 21" Rustic Timbers Unit: 799 Safety Pilot 129 Custon Screen 225 (did not factor this in, I am satisfied with this item :) ) Installation 139 Tax 87.21 @6.75% (72.02 after deducting the Custom Screen) Grand Total 1379.21 (1139.02 after deducting the Custom Screen) P.S. I will get to it this week but I am disconnecting the unit and will be GIVING it back to the store in a neatly packed up fashion to show I am not trying to scam anyone. read more

Horrible! I always thought this was a cute local store... looks like it. Walked in with my husband and son with the intent of purchasing a natural gas grill. The person working was talking to another customer and failed to even acknowledge our presence!!!! We walked through the entire showroom and not once did the worker even say hello. Customer Service is everything. As much as I would love to support the local store, we left and headed to Lowes. I hired the Fireplace Shoppe of Northfield to repair my masonry chimney. Their price quote was better than others I received, but I regret my choice. Their workmanship was poor at best. They required 50% payment before scheduling the work. One month later the work was done (albeit done very poorly). The very next day (which was a Saturday) Stacey from their office rang my phone off the hook (no less than 5 calls within an hour and a half) requesting the final payment via credit card. I explained that I was traveling and would contact her no later than Monday AM with the payment. I did so promptly Monday at 9 AM. I would never recommend them for any masonry work. Extremely disappointed with the customer service here. We live close by, so we wanted to go with a local business even if it meant paying a bit more. I went in for a chimney liner replacement, and made an appointment with the owner to come out and provide an estimate. He did so, and everything was fine. When I received the estimate I was a bit surprised to see the markup on parts. I inquired as to whether I could purchase the parts and have them install them (which would be half the price). I did not receive any response, so a week later I stopped into the store again to make another inquiry in person. Only then did I receive an email respectfully explaining that they couldn't match the price on parts but would meet me halfway. Okay. Again, we wanted to provide business to a local company so I accepted the revised quote and scheduled the work. I took a day off work to be there for the install. A few days before the work was to be done they called me to tell me they had discussed the job internally and decided some additional parts were needed which would cost another $400. I wasn't happy about this, but given that I'd already scheduled the install, and taken the day off work to be there, I accepted them at their word. When the installer arrived he said the job was much more complicated and would require different (more expensive) parts and work. When he left he informed me that I could expect a call later that day. It has been over a week now and I have received no call, no email, no estimates. Nothing. I'm extremely disappointed and suggest others take their business elsewhere. During the entire experience I was made to feel like they were doing me a favor rather than us entrusting them with our business. read more

Horrible customer service. Scheduled me for 9 am the day after Christmas for a chimney sweep and just completely didn't show up. It wasn't until 10:30 someone finally called me back. They rescheduled me for the following Tuesday between 5-6pm and called right at 6 to say they wouldn't be able to make it for atleast 45mins to an hour. WORST customer service. They claimed they had BOTH my email and phone number written down wrong. How convenient. read more
