Visited around 8:30pm on a Saturday night and it was at about 35% capacity and didn't feel busy...grabbed 2lbs fresh pork chorizo from the butcher who called me right over (no wait; otherwise paper numbers), tostadas for aguachile, choco flan slice and taquito tortillas, which is all made inhouse! Checker and bagger were both cute latinas who were sweet as can be...the selection and freshness were great and it's a true one stop shop for almost all Mexican/Latin products: marinated meats, fresh/dried chiles by the pound (bulk), prepared hot food, desserts/pan dulces, fresh moles, prepared masa, etc...I'll look for banana leaves next time when I make puerco pibil (cochinita pibil). New = good. Definitely a step up from the Bargain Basket (the former market). Northgate is well-known in the area and has decent pricing on different items. Their weekly specials really suck you in, sometimes you can get something like 10 bundles of green onions for $1. No joke. read more

First of all I work at a hospital. Let's try and get to the actual safety here, for one you make people wait to get bread but don't make them wear hair up at all then to get your bread they use only one glove that they are actually not using to get your food with or pick up trash and not change their gloves. I just don't see how this is all sanitary in that case let me get my own stuff. Grocery stores have by far been so un educated with all this not once have I seen anyone wipe down the key pad or the girls change their gloves after every transaction. It by far defeats the purpose of it all. So next time the staff gets mad rolls their eyes understand that you have already trained the meat department to wear hair up when handling food. read more

They don't marinate the meat that is restocked. They put it in marinate and sell it to you like it's been marinating for a while but it hasn't. What's really happening is they ran out of marinated meat and they're not about to turn you away. So they use fresh meat, put it in the same marinate that the sold meat was in and stock it to sell.. I saw one of there employees do this. People buy it thinking they're getting marinated meat but that's not the case. Some chains succeed because they have the purchasing power to make themselves convienant and available. This is one of those chains. read more

I went for the sole purpose of getting their shrimp 26/30 count which was on sale for 4.99 a pound. I told the man that I wanted the 26/30 count shrimp that was on sale for 4.99, asked if this was it (pointed it out) and he said yes, and I wanted two one pound packages. He told another guy in Spanish of what I wanted. When I got to the register the shrimp was 21/24 count and at 5.99 a pound. They went back and checked and came back and told me their shrimp was not coming in till 10 a.m. for the sale. I said how was I supposed to know that and it's not advertised only after 10 a.m. Just got a shrug. I still purchased it because it was a good price and certainly not worth driving back for. The Bay Area has La Pinata for its main chain, and this place has SoCal covered with 40+ stores. This location was the first one I went to, and just got used to it so much I kept coming back. Good produce and meats, and nice selection of hot to-go entrees if you're in a hurry, liked the chile colorado and the carnitas. They make enough tortilla chips to almost have its own aisle. Bakery area was lacking a bit even though I went fairly early in the day. They steal a page from Costco by stacking the aisles v-e-r-y h-i-g-h, just don't look up too much. But it's a clean and walkable store even during busy times. read more

I'd been here a few times before with Natalie while looking for the more authentic Mexican groceries you just can't find in the chain stores, but went there today more out of necessity. See, my local grocery store had promised me a raw pork leg delivered so I could brine it in time for Easter. They failed ... miserably ... Most stores don't carry whole pork legs on a regular basis, and if they do, they're already cut up into pork butt portions. After running the gauntlet between a few other stores, I wound up here. If you don't speak Spanish, be prepared to have a slightly longer wait if the employee doesn't speak good English... but don't worry, if all else fails another employee or a customer will gladly help translate. I dropped in last night to buy some things from the carniceria. I usually come to the carniceria to buy (1) premade al pastor and (2) beef bones for Hayley (my GSD). Anyways, I dropped in and noticed that several items were on sale, so I also picked up some marinated pork ribs and chicken. Although I originally went to this market because a relative took me to the one in Chula Vista, I am very dissappointed. The one in Chula Vista had all the "Bells and Whistles" of a Mexican market. This one doesn't even have fresh salsa. I went to this one to get some of those low calorie nopale tortillas and when I got home and opened them up.... gross, I found MOLD!!! Then I checked the salsa casera I just bought and the expiration was for the very next day! What a rip off! Also, they don't have a selection of "botanas" (cold appetizers) like the one in Chula Vista. The one in CV has so many different FRESH options of Ceviche. My favorite is the Aguachile Ceviche, which the Placentia store does not carry. They only carry one type and by the looks of it, it was old. Dirty and Gross. I came hear two days ago for tortillas. The corn tortillas were fresh and delicious. The chips are good too. The fresh Salsa is okay, a bit dry. Cashier was nice and courteous. The Mexican grilling meat selection seems to have a good variety but I have not tried them yet. read more

Not all Northgates are created equal but this is my go to for get togethers. I love having a one stop shop for marinated carne asada and chicken. The Northgate tortillas are delicious as are the homemade chips. My family and friends always know that it will be a gastro treat with all the taco fixings when I host. The queso fresco is salted to perfection, the guacamole is always super fresh and their roasted red salsa and avocado salsa are enjoyed. If you're upset because you have a language barrier then don't patron this store. It is a cultural experience so bring your token Mexican friend to show you the ropes. Being bicultural is incredibly helpful and people are congenial. If you're expecting Ralph's customer service then go to Ralph's. I was under the impression that this chain was Hispanic owned and therefore to help the Hispanic community and yet they helped about hundred people lose their cars last Friday night by assisting in a Checkpoint area. Came in to buy a quick snack for work & bought the "fresh" packed fruit bowls and the "fresh" packed yogurt with granola & fruit cup, Unfortunately unlike the Best Buy date or packed date. The fruit was horrible mushy & gone bad as soon I I open it and smelled it. Never buying that again. On 11/30/12, I went to this market on my lunch break. While I was waiting for my turn, I was checking out my messages on my iphone. When it was my turn, the bagger by the name of Liliana(?) S. bag my purchase but the cashier, Mano R. accused me of takiing their photo w/o their permission. The bagger Liliana supported her claim. I offered to show them my photos but insisted that I took Mano's picture. First of all, this is the first time in experienced a combative cashier not to mention her associate, Liliana,. I reported this to the manager, Valen Le Ibarra. Since neither women spoke about the matter in English, instead, they spoke in Spanish. The manager claims that their was a mis understanding but was not to clear what the mis-understanding was. I was not satisfied with his answer nor was there any apologies from the two accusers, Mano & Liliana. This is not the kind of customer service that you would expect. I called their H.R. department that day to file a complaint. I did reach their voice mail and left a message to call me but as of to date ( 12/12/12) no one has ever called. This store is lacking in customer service as something like this should have never transpired. Wild allegations like this should be corrected by the company but it seems like their attitude is they do not care. I also noticed that their garlic they sell is from China & not Mexico???Yikes! Considering the Q A and the fertilizers they use in China have really raised my concerns about the quality & origins of their produce. read more

We visited this market for salsa and chips to take to a bbq. They had a nice variety of salsas to pick and chips that were fresh. The store is VERY small and hard to maneuver your cart around in. Everyone was super friendly and the salsas were tasty. We walked out with two bags of chips and 3 containers of salsa for $18. read more

So I've been coming here ever since it was bargain basket & never had bad customer service until recently. I didn't catch her name, but one particular cashier never seems to smile. Even if you smile at her she remains with that stank face. Just so happens today she was my cashier so I brushed it off & didn't care cause all I wanted was my horchata. I go to their station & I wasn't even greeted or not even a smile just a blank stare from Lilian R. I ask if I can have a large horchata & show her my receipt. She picks up a cup she had next to her looks at it obviously notices that it had something wrong with it because she put it down & looked for another one. She picked up the same cup again & I notice it looked like it had bite marks & she was about to start serving the horchata when I ask her if I can please have another cup. She says "but this one is clean". IF it were clean she wouldn't have stared it for so long & then gone to look for another one! I let her know that I would like another cup. & again she repeats herself saying that the one she had was clean & I have to tell her AGAIN that I want a different cup. She then says if you want another cup you're going to have to wait because I have to go get it from the back. I say that's no problem with me I'll wait. She turns around & I kid you not walks slowly to go get it I was just thinking is this girl serious!! She comes back & fills the horchata & gives it to me without wiping it down like how they usually do. You can clearly tell she was bothered because she had to walk to the back to get more cups EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS GOING TO HAVE TO DO THAT. her face said it all no smile or thank you have a good day. The front of the market is not appealing at all. I've seen better storefronts in third world countries. The parking lot smells like dead carcass. could be from other locations in the strip mall. Decent market that has some great deals on what one might call "Mexican staples". Peppers,onions,bulk beans, tortillas, cilantro--all great. Super deals on tequila too. Staff does a good job and care, but the location isn't great and corporate neglects it in favor of bigger stores like the one @ St College & Lincoln. This location is kinda small and desperately needs a remodel. Unless you're super local, I would suggest other stores. read more
