Was craving a chicken salad after trying one at a Cinco de Mayo potluck at work and came here to get it from the deli. Their chicken salad had jalapenos in it so it had a kick to it. It did not taste like the one I had at the pot luck but it was still good in its own right and I ate it with tostadas and added avocado. This location is in a busy shopping center so parking might be a little challenging depending on the time of day. It's also in an older shopping center so it has an old feel to it versus the newer Northgate's. It's still very good here! read more

However, the location of the store isn't in the nicest part of town. They don't offer as many options for baked goods and produce in comparison to other grocery stores. I briefly popped in because I just wanted to grab some fruit because I got a new chili powder that I wanted to taste and I didn't wanna go to the house of cutting fruit so I just went to Northgate where they always have pre-cut fruit. I got cucumbers and jicama and two limes I went to pay and I asked the cashier if they had any disposable knives so I can cut my limes and she said I don't think so. I think all we have is forks and I'm like oh it's OK no worries thank you though she said do you want me to ask the kitchen if they can cut the limes for you? I'm like really sure that would be great. I paid it was like less than six dollars. She grabbed my limes ran to the kitchen. I had to wait like a couple of minutes and she came back out with them cut and to me that is honestly what I love about our culture what I love about customer service that she didn't have to do that. She didn't have to go out of her way. She didn't have to stop what she was doing in her line in her cashier position, but she was super friendly super customer service oriented that that Little meant so much to me because it legit just made my life 10 times easier than what I was about to try to do with getting a knife to cut my limes. I hate that I didn't get her name, but I think if this is red, they'll know who I'm talking about great job for hiring amazing staff. We like coming here they have all the goodies for barbecuing chips and salsa and guacamole, delicious fruits and snacks. They have everything here today we came for some chips and salsa and I made some guacamole. I got a giant Chicharron to try and some other snacks and mangos. I like this location but it's always busy. The parking lot is always full, but we seem to always find a spot. The workers here are really nice. It's a smallish store. I like the one in Whittier, but we decided to come here since it's a bit closer. But love the store for barbecue nights, thank you for excellent service and all the delicious food you guys have and for always having fresh guacamole and salsa and chips. There is a lot of weird loitering and sketchy activity at the entrance, and around the whole shopping center. I've also purchased chicken from the butcher counter but when I got home and opened it, the chicken smelled spoiled so I had to throw it out. This is by far the WORST champurrado I've ever had in my life! I paid $6 for a drink that had so many huge chunks of I don't know what. It took away from the actual drink itself and yes, I actually mixed it with the spoon before pouring it in my cup so it looked how it's supposed to be. They sometimes have decent deals on produce, but overall, prices are higher than even premium grocery stores for basic things like tortilla chips. Been on the hunt for good chicharrons for a while and have been coming up short in my home city of Tucson. While visiting family in the Fullerton area, my BIL turned me on to Northgate. Jackpot! Their porkbelly chicharrons are super meaty, super huge and super flavorful. Just the right amount of meat vs fat.....I was in crunchy, succulent heaven. They're pricey but so worth it. Picked up some carnitas as well along with some fresh corn tortillas. While the carnitas were flavorful, they just weren't as good as I'd hoped. The store made corn tortillas were warm and "corny." Just how I like 'em. If you like chicharrons, you need to get yourself to Northgate. read more

Northgate Gonzalez Market is about half the size of a giant grocery chain store but it has a lot of the charm and appeal that makes it culturally Mexican. Their carniceria (aka Butcher shop) offers an assortment of meats and pre made/seasoned meats for cooking. You also have the option to select hot foods that have been prepared for breakfast (served 6am-11am, while supplies last), lunch and dinner. Seriously, you could buy a whole family sized meal for dinner which can feed 3, 6, 15, and 30 something people. Walking around the store and exploring many of their options, I've found there's a little of everything. I came with my parents and aunts to buy stuff for my grandma's birthday and we were able to get everything we needed (and a few extra stuff). They have a little baked goods section to the far right corner near the registers. Near the entrance there's a place to buy tamales (pork, chicken, and I forgot the third). They even have some juices, too! Some of their product, however, are comparable to products at other stores. For example, I've found that their baby food section is actually a little more pricey than the ones I've found at Target. But if you're pressed for time and don't worry too much about cost, you could buy what you need here. Parking can be a little nightmare since the parking lot isn't very big. Thankfully we were able to find a spot as soon as we drove into the Placentia Plaza. read more

July 2019 We always come here for the Tamales and Agua Frescas!! The location has a private lot shared with the several other eateries, businesses near by. Parking can be limited and hectic. The guacamole, agua fresca, tamales stand is right at the front entrance. Lately their is no worker their so you have to pay at the register for the Agua Frescas. The Guacamole and Tamales are first come first serve packaged. Also near the back of the store they have a Butcher that also offers a meat selection, salsa, guacamole, rice, beans etc. The location is fairly small compared to other locations but theirs always several lines open and the staff here are friendly. The tilapia Ceviche Used to be made very well about a year ago I do not know who prepares the fish here but they need to get fired or a lesson on how to make and cut the fish the proper way the chunks in the salad are way too big there is more vegetables than meet him thinking there either lazy to cut the fish properly or there in a hurry whatever it is it's very disappointing they need to do something about this The cuts of the fish were very disgusting and rubbery as if it was sitting in lemon juice for 4 days straight. I came here because I love ceviche and did not know there was a a supermarket that sold them! Of course, I grabbed my husband and we went- I could not erase the shrimp cocktail and ceviche from my head after seeing the photos from Yelp and Google- So we went and ordered it- The tastes of the ceviche and the shrimp cocktail are absolutely delicious! We really enjoyed it. Both the ceviche and shrimp cocktail are packed! Unlike other places where ceviche is a piece of fish and some shrimps, Northgate will make sure that you are satisfied! Mexican markets can be judged by a few different methods. Cleanliness and size are typical standards, but those say nothing about the store's character. For me, I judge a mercado by its masa, tortillas, chicharron con carne, y nopales. Masa is as simple as corn and water, but as complicated as a Tijuana traffic intersection. The same ingredients mixed the same way but in different places can be ordinary or extraordinary, and who knows why. The BEST places somehow make the BEST masa consistently. All the NGMs I have visited consistently make almost the best. Add an oven and some ladies wearing clean white uniforms (that look was pioneered by White Castle... true!) and you have a tortilla factory. Happiness is picking up a round brick of soft, glowingly warm fresh corn tortillas. I bet there's one waiting for me right now. Now the king of Mexican snacks: chicharron con carne. Holly chit these are good. They look like little ribs, and are best when very fresh. The meat is dry but like bacon only softer. The best ones are crunchy, sweet, bacon like. Pork confit. Hit or miss on the freshness at any NGM; I will know when I get in the car, open the bag, and... mmmmm. Que Bueno. I dunno why more N. Americans don't eat nopales. I am not really quite sure why i am always so excited to venture into a new Mexican grocery store. It could be that I spent the first 12 years of my life in a heavily latin/hispanic community and I used to have Hispanic babysitters who would feed me tacos and cheese (mmmhmmm cheese). This particular grocery store was one of the cleaner and bigger Spanish Markets that I have been to. Immediately upon walking in you encounter their produce department which seemed to have very fresh produce and fruits. We had to get a container of cut up fruit which went well with our mexican style spicy salt (soooooo goood!) This place also had a really extensive selection of marinated and cut meats. I think we opted for the slices of beef shoulder blade...? it was fajita night for me and gf and the "butcher" recommended we use this. I think I also enjoy going to mexican grocery stores b/c they ALWAYS have different flavors for most of their products like: mayo with lemon, fun mexican sodas, coconut juice, mexican inspired chips/snacks and so so much more. Went to this location yesterday for the first time. Definately wasn't as nice or big as the other Northgate markets I've been to.... I got some carnitas from their kitchen, and when I got to the register , the girl informed me I was entitled to a free 2 liter soda with my meal . I saw the line was getting long .....but before I reply, she was walking away...... She returned a few minutes later with types of soda for me to choose from ! The cashier didn't have to tell me about the free soda , and she didnt have to stop everything to go get it , especially because the line was growing slowly... So, I never heard of this market until my bro Eddy, told me this place has way better food and cheaper, so today I went to get meal prep things for the week, and normally I pay like $239 for my meal prep things from like food 4 less or Albertsons and stuff but today I came here and got the same things and more for only $168.94, I mean I got a lot me meats and things than I ever do for way cheaper and the meats are so fresh and clean, I really am excited about this market and it's now my go to market. The meat clerk she was is nice and friendly honest, she explained everything too me and advised me on the difference of the meats and the prices and everything, she even went as far as personally seasoning the meat I asked for and I really appreciate that. Thank you so much.. My check out clerk was Estella, she was so nice and friendly she went above and beyond and even helped me on the aisles to get things i needed and didn't know where they were, and my bag clerk was the front end manager Gracie, which was really great to see the manager working as a bagger and she asked me how I was doing and if I found everything and we talked about our families and everything. This is the closest supermarket to me so I make A LOT of tacos! The grocery store is a Mexican food galore that contains already prepared foods, like tamales, ceviches, tacos, combination plates, aguas frescas, pan de dulce, and much more! What I like most about this grocery store is that their meat costs are cheaper than other grocery stores. Today, I bought marinated dark meat chicken (preparada la pierna) for $1.89/ lb! I chop these leg pieces to make my own tacos. I appreciate that the meat is already marinated so it saves a lot of time and guaranteed to be full of flavor. They already have pre-chopped taco meat but it costs more- the chicken cut for taco meat was $3.89. If you're planning to have a taco party, they have trays of uncooked meat for $14.99- a pound each of carne asada, chicken and adobada. There's also a wide selection of salsas. While the parking lot here is sketchy, dirty and mediocre at best, the store is surprisingly clean for a Mexican market. They have a pretty solid bakery section, meat dept and hot foods. Where the store really shines though, is in the produce department. It's common to find fruits like oranges or watermelon at 5lb/$1, celery at .50¢, cilantro 4/$1 and on and on. Sometimes I have to stop at markets like Albertsons for emergencies and I cringe when I pay literally 5 TIMES more for the exact same product. The only downside to this market vs whiter markets is that that don't always have typical American veggies. For example, I wanted to pick up Brussels sprouts and cauliflower one day and they didn't carry either of them. (But broccoli was super cheap!) I suppose it's not that big of a deal, I asked the stocking manager to order Brussels sprouts and they had them the next week, but it's a little annoying sometimes. Other than that, I really like their hot foods section for $7 plates and the cheese section for small amounts of fresh Mexican cheeses and creams. Also, sometimes they have tastings for pastries that are super delicious. Their Mexican bread section is on point. All my gluttonous Mexican childhood memories come rushing back every time I venture into the bread section. Butter, sugar and flour galore. DELISH. They have cheap rolls, I think .25 or .30 cents each in white or wheat. Oh! And you DON'T have to know Spanish to shop here! They always talk to me in English unless I make a point to respond in Spanish, and my boyfriend (who understands very very little of the language) has no trouble once they realize he's not Mexican. To say that this Northgate market is an improvement over the previous market that was here is a severe understatement. They have made it a much cleaner and brighter place to go shopping for your grocery needs. Their deli department has pretty decent salsas that are prep-packaged that are pretty good. You can also get your giant slab of chicharron here too. I think that their marinated meats and hot foods selections taste better than what you would find at Food-4-Less. The real gem of this market is that they have super low prices on things like guajillo chiles, jalapenos, tomatillos, and habaneros. Ironically, I have noticed that Mexican markets in general, have a paltry frozen burrito selection. One of those things that is a philosophical mystery of life. After all, Asian markets tend to have a pretty good ramen selection... The only down side is that the parking lot is a mess to navigate. The spaces are a bit too tiny to accommodate all those giant pickup trucks and the condition of the asphalt is horrible. read more

Northgate Market replaced the Bargain Basket, a tarnished Placentia institution, in the Placentia Plaza. Northgate market is well organized and their fresh, Northgate Brand guacamole and avocado salsa are good value and worth the trip alone. However, they also have a deli with nice selection of Mexican cheeses and Mexican style takes on ready to eat pork, beef and chicken. Run here to get your proteins, salsas and tortillas for a barbecue or if you are in a hurry or looking for a different type of take out, go here to grab ready to eat food. My most recent trip I got mangoes, the avocado salsa, a wedge of salty Cotija cheese, flank steak and various chili peppers (serrano, jalapenos). Superb. The produce is reasonable (verging on cheap) and is not prettiest but is always tasty. I urge you fans of Mexican food out there to start cooking at home, go to Northgate with a couple of ideas and then get creative. That avocado salsa? Great on omelets. The mangoes and chili?
