The veterinarian was amazing the both times I had to go to have my animals put to sleep. For my cat the worker that came out to get him was rude. And grabbed the carrier angry. A few years later when I took my dog in, they were a better crew. This is a time for people that are literally going through the worst situation possible and having employees with empathy are must for this position. When we moved to Reno and needed to find a veterinarian, our dog sitter recommended Northwest Veterinary Hospital. We have been very happy with their services ever since. It is clear from the moment you walk in that they care about your pet. On Saturdays, they offer vaccination clinics and that's why we went today. The staff was kind and caring, as usual, and super efficient. We were in and out of there in no time! Over the years, we have had a couple more serious reasons to take our Lulu to see Dr. Riar. About a year ago, she scratched her eye badly. Dr. Riar was compassionate and thorough - I could see he was worried when he put dye in her eye and saw all of the scratches. She almost needed more serious care (we talked about being referred to an eye specialist) but the treatment that Dr. Riar prescribed ended up curing her! We are more than happy with the services and level of care here! read more

This veterinarian office was horrible! Beyond dense, I brought in my 3 1/2 month old shepherd. The front desk person who calls herself a vet tech was a idiot. When we went into the examination room she wanted to know if my puppy was going to bite her. Idiot she's a puppy... We came because of a sore on my pups nose. After meeting the veterinarian he offered to clean the area and apply topical cream and give her a antibiotic shot. His other option was surgery and full sedation. We choose the less aggressive care plan after seeing the bill. The doctor changed his mind and said he only wanted to do the surgery. By the way not one person took a moment to pet my dog. Ugly sad office. Do not go there please. No pet deserves this treatment. read more

I was reluctant at first because of some of the reviews I read, But by the time I left, I realized that I was getting above average care for my dog. My dog Sierra was bitten badly by a German Shepherd, I was also bitten, but went to the ER before I knew Sierra needed help. My vet was not available till later in the afternoon. When I called, Northwest veterinary clinic, the very professional staff person asked me to hold so she could explain the situation to the doctor. She said the doctor felt it was important to bring my dog in right away for proper care. She had severe wounds on her body and her leg. I only saw one wound, Doctor Rior said there had to be more punctures because of the shape of a dog's mouth. he's very knowledgeable and a no nonsense type of doctor. I was also very impressed that he'd let me in to the examination room while he was cleaning and evaluating her wounds. One of her wounds was very deep and needed stitches. Although it was heart wrenching to see, he showed me how deep the puncture wounds were. He also dropped an antibiotic powder into one of the wounds to make sure it wouldn't get infected. While in his office, Sierra, also got an injection of antibiotics, as well as being sent home with antibiotics and antibiotic appointment His staff called Pet Smart for me to find out if they had a doughnut rather than the cone of shame (what that office would do that for you? ) The doughnut worked much better for her so she could hear and eat better while healing. I don't know what to say about some of the bad reviews about Dr Rior. He was very responsive to all my questions. He's not an overly personable, but extremely efficient, and didn't make me feel as though I couldn't ask him any questions.I felt like he was no nonsense. He answered all my questions thoroughly. I must say his staff is also amazing! Two of them professionally lifted Sierra up onto the examination table while I was there. Looking back on it, I realize the culture in Northwest veterinary hospital is very professional, but not as hoity-toity as other vets I've been to. I also felt like the vet bill was very reasonable. I noticed the medication's weren't marked up excessively like they are in other offices. I don't think Dr Rior is a money grubbing Veterinarian. He must have some decent expenses though because he had at least four people working with him. And I must say once again, his staff was awesome and very professional with me. It annoys me that people would refer to his race in previous reviews. I find that disgusting, and I think that's what threw some people off. I think if you're patient with him, you'll see that Dr. Rior is one of the best vets you've ever been to. I highly recommend Northwest veterinary clinic and Dr Rior. I recently had my small dog in there after taking him to the ER, where they took no tests yet spewed out horrifying information. My sister took her dog to them today because she had a sore from licking herself. The vet decided to clean the wound and the dog starting screaming within a few seconds a vet assistant noticed the vet was using hot water and was burning the dog. She started confronting the vet about not checking the water beforehand and he didnt care at all. My sister is traumatized and so is the poor dog. Awful, rude, disrespectful assistants and the Dr. asked if my 14 week old puppy would bite him. He didn't even pet her to say hi nor did the other rude stuff. They were trying to say my puppy needed surgery for a skin infection.. took to another vet just need a topical and antibiotics. MIND YOU THE INFECTION LEAKED ONTO HIS HAND AND TABLE HE DID NOT WASH IT OFF HIS HAND HE LET IT STAY AND TOUCHED THE DOOR HANDLE THEN WE WATCHED THEM JUST LET ANOTHER DOG RIGHT IN WHEN WE LEFT WITHOUT CLEANING THE INFECTION UP. The lady giving prices rudely told me i had a "same day appt fee" because i was "30 mins late" mind you we were on time to our 2:30pm that i had made 2 days prior. She raised her voice stating It is my fault i have that fee because i was rudely late. When in fact i was on time and they do not send a reminder text so they can just collect extra. They are just looking for money, they don't love your pet or care about comfort. We did report the whole office with pictures and videos. Your pet is in not clean hands here. Dr Riar and his staff were professionals. Very kind and thorough. A simple blood test has taken my Booboo from having difficulty breathing daily for years to such a better life. 10 years on prednisolone was taking its toll. The front office staff is great. The doctor is horrible. We have two dogs and tried this place at the end of last summer with our labradoodle that was having a hard time breathing. The doctor examined him and called me back. He told me that my pups lungs had fluid in them and "it was bad". That's all he kept saying. He didn't offer any assistance and referred us to a specialist. My wife and I immediately took our dog to a specialist and they were astonished that the vet didn't drain his lungs. Turned out to just be pneumonia. Lung drain and meds fixed him up. We then took our senior dog in for an ear infection. They gave us a three step cleaning system and told us he had a polyp in his ear, then sent us home. We went back a few more times with the ear infection, they would just clean the ear and send us away. A few days ago we went back in as the polyp was growing out of his ear. The doctor said he needs surgery to remove it and it would be $1800. The earliest they could get us in was August (over a month away). We went to another vet for a second opinion and hopes we could get in earlier. Second vet said our pups entire ear canal was infected and his entire ear canal had to be removed. This type of surgery could only be done by a board certified vet at a specialist. Also, with our pup being a senior pup, surgery was not much of an option (Cushing, heart murmur and enlarged liver). We made the very hard decisions put him down because he was in pain too. If Bet would have offered surgery when they first saw the polyp it would not have been as serious of a surgery and we might still have our dog with us. I put all blame on this vet and will never return or recommend to my worst enemy. There are many more options in Reno than this place. DO NOT GO HERE!! read more

We've used NW twice for urgent care--they got us in promptly and I found Dr. Riar to be very practical with his suggestions and approach to solving problems. One was a young male with a potential blockage; the other was an older dog who somehow had injured her spine and was in a lot of pain. The former spent the whole day there and Dr. Riar did several barium radiographs. Both dogs recovered well; the clinics prices are reasonable, and he takes a practical approach to veterinary medicine, much like the old (now retired) vets we used to have who were good at problem solving and took things one step at a time rather than hit the patient and owners with a barrage of tests and hope something definitive shows up. I found Dr. Riar to be logical and methodical and practical. While other reviewers say he doesn't talk much, who cares. He focuses on the (animal) patient and asks us what he needs to know. He answers our questions, offers advice. I never found him to be rude, just focused on doing his job. We are in once or twice a year-- usually for travel certificates or puppy exams. read more

Dr. Valori Morris no longer is associated with Northwest Veterinary Hospital, it is now run by Dr. Riar. I took my puppy there 4 times, and each time I had to wait and hour to an hour and a half, even though I had an appointment. Their rates are reasonable, at least if your time isn't worth anything to you. I did not find Dr. Riar to be very friendly or empathetic, and the exam he gave my puppy took less than 4 minutes and was not comprehensive. The staff spelled my name wrong on their computer database and did not seem able to rectify the mistake so each time I went there, they had to 'search' for my records under the incorrect spelling. read more

My three dogs Mr. Gus, Bonkers and Leo have had numerous check ups, teeth cleanings and vaccinations at NW Veterinary Hospital over the past 3 years. Yesterday, Leo became very ill as a result of chewing a Raid Ant Bait and I rushed him to their office. Dr. Riar took immediate action to empty Leo's stomach, gave him charcoal to absorb the poison and an IV to replace fluids. 4 hours later Leo was himself again and so was I. This morning at 8am they called to ask how Leo was doing and invite us back for a no fee check-up. This doctor has no idea what he is doing. He prescribed my barely one year old dog with prednisone and gave me an ear ointment for my dog's ear infection that wouldn't go away. He said I would have to put the ointment in that ear every 3 days forever...Took him to another vet once I moved and turns out he didn't even have an ear infection. And the cherry on top? The excessive use of the ointment (which had a steroid in it) and the use of prednisone on such a young dog has caused what looks to be Cushing's disease in my baby. He isn't even 2 years old yet. I am honestly going to find out if I can sue this guy. He needs his license taken away immediately. read more

The prices are reasonable and the staff is nice, but the Indian doctor guy is horrible. Ive gone here before for shots, and it was fine, but the doc doesnt introduce himself. He force fed medication to my cat, damn near squeezing her face to get it in her mouth. Then he got upset because she jumped from the table and we had to corner her. He then charged me for an amoxiciln that is meant for dogs, not cats. Thankfully I did my own research to see if it was ok, but he should've said something. Then he just disappeared. I should've known not to go into a vet located in the middle of a shopping center. Haha. I will not go here again. Get your shots done at the humane society. I took my small dog to the Northwest Veterinary because he was wining a lot, i assumed my dog was in pain. Dr. Riar is the doctor who saw him, he was not friendly at all, he didn't want to touch my dog. Dr. Riar said, he stinks. I said, yes his breathe smells, he is old, blind, and deaf. He didn't examine him. He immediately said, I should just put my dog down since he is in pain. I said he has lots of life, he just needs something for pain. He eats all of the time, drinks, and poops daily. He has lots of life and runs around daily. He just seems to wine at night like he hurts. He doctor said, what do you want for me to do. I then said, give him something for pain so he can rest at night. I didn't appreciate this doctor at all. He was very cold, not compassionate at all. Then my dog passed away a month later, they charged my daughter 450.00 to cremate his body 80.00 to make a paw. This happened so sudden while i was out of town, she just took my dog to the 1st vet she found, she didn't know that other places charged a lot less. My dog was 10lbs, and already dead when my daughter took him in the office. I called around to other vets to verify the cost of cremation after i got home. Most other vets charged under 150.00 with the paw print. He CHARGED 450.00 2 times more. I even called the cremation service they used. The cremation placed charged them 200.00 with paw print. This doctor is a ripoff. I could never get him to call me back when i called their office. DO not take your dog here. Heartless doctor. read more

I went here after finding a lump on my kitty's tummy. The exam fee is $35 which is a pretty good price. I was a little early for my appointment but I didn't have to wait and they got me in early. The assistant/front desk attendant took my cats temp and weight with my assistance which I personally appreciated as I think it is more upsetting to my cat to have someone else handling her. The doctor inspected my cats teeth and then her stomach. He proceeded to shave her to get a better idea of what was there. The prognosis wasn't good and initially I felt he was telling me there was no hope as my cat had mammary tumors. He said surgery was the only way to determine one way or another if my cat had cancer and I asked if he couldn't take a sample without surgery. He said that would only cause the tumor to spread. He didn't seem very willing to sit and answer my questions and he didn't offer me many options either. When I was paying for the visit I thought of something else to ask him (I was a little rattled and as you can imagine I wasn't really in the right frame of mind to ask everything that probably needed to be asked). I asked the receptionist and she said that was a question for the doctor. Instead of him coming out to address the question she simply relayed the question and answer. The nice thing about the visit is that they gave me a printout of exactly what I would pay if I decided to go forward with the surgery to remove the tumors. What I really didn't like, and the reason why I gave 2 stars is that the doctor was so cut and dry that I felt he didn't really care about my cat or my concerns... no way I let this guy operate on my baby! read more

I really like this place. My boyfriend and I are just in Reno for the weekend and was able to get an appointment squeezed in last minute. Our pug is very sick and not breathing well. Becca and Dr. Riar got him in right away and were very thorough in the investigation of Rudy's ailments. They were very nice to us and our Rudy Roo. So I saw some bad reviews and it freaked me out. I did go to this vet and he did seem a bit scared by my 100 lb lab/GreatDane, which is weird if you know GD and Labs. However, he solved the problem of my dog being completely overgrown with yeast. No one caught it. It's been years !!! How bad did I feel ?! I was told he had a licking/OCD problem by everyone else. So take what you want from that. I am the type of person. Who wants book smart and maybe a little less bedside manner if it comes to an ailment. That's just me though. read more

Extremely disappointed with this business on many levels. 1. my dog was very sick a few months ago. I just move to Reno part time & this place is near my house. The doctor didn't even want to touch my dog nor did he seem to care that she seem to be very very sick. I also explained that I was very strapped for cash & needed the most affordable help for my dog. He came back with a $500 vet bill including trying to make me buy a bag of dog food. I ended up just getting the antibiotics & paying for the visit. 2. I bought prescription catfood a week ago... 3. I went in 3 days ago to make an order for a bigger bag of feline cat food. Then when I got home I received a phone call saying they couldn't order the cat food unless I bring my cat in for a check up. Absurd! I asked if I could have my cats vet records sent over so they could show that he's been prescribed this food for the past 7 years. They said no, I would need to bring my cat in. This doctor is a money hungry jerk & I will never support or recommend such a sad excuse for a vet. Totally ridiculous that I would have to spend more $ just to go in & spend $ on food that I have been prescribed to buy for 7 years. Very disappointing all around! My dog has come back from them extremely happy to see me, then very scared when I tried to bring him back, that tells me something wasn't right for him. Also.. I inquired about old medication disposal, some vets will take your old mess and dispose of them properly, the receptionist asked the doctors and they said to crush up the pills and flush them!! Are you serious??!! That is the absolute worst thing to do as it pollutes our water system!! EVERY site I researched said not to dispose like that. This place is weird and I am never going back. I've been twice now and both times had the impression that the vet was a little... off? The first time I shrugged it off because I didn't want to be judgey, but the second time the opinion was cemented. I got the impression that he does not like dogs and that he is afraid of them. He is not warm at all, and he stands very far away, and is jumpy around my dog. She is the most gentle, sweet, calm, low-key pup I have ever met, so it's weird. And when I told him about the issues I am having with her (lots of pain) he was completely unhelpful and ignored the issue, saying he didn't know and to call a former vet. I told him I could have the vet records sent, and that the other vet was states away, but he expressed no interest in seeing them or knowing more. He suggested nothing helpful and seemed not to care. I had to dig for even the smallest insight and ask the same questions repeatedly trying to get any information. I legitimately wonder if he is an actual veterinarian or some kind of hack, but also know that is a super rude thing to say and it probably isn't true. But he seemed uncaring and unknowledgeable and I would never recommend you to bring your dog here. read more

I have brought both of my kittens here before to get fixed with shots and never had an issue. I called today to talk about getting my 6 year old dog fixed. I was quoted $200 for a standard spay for her size without being in heat, which is on the top end for this town already. I was then put on hold for eight minutes. The receptionist finally came back to tell me that she talked to the Dr. who decided to double the cost to $400 because my dog is "old". Absolutely ridiculous! I was jaw dropped. This vet thinks that nearly $500 is totally reasonable to have a perfectly healthy 6 year old dog spayed with vaccine updates. I will NEVER bring my cats back, nor will I let my clearly not OLD dog step foot in the building. I'll happily be taking them to another office and spreading. read more

I have brought my dog here twice, and will never bring him back. Dr. Riad is terrified of him. He doesn't talk to or pet your dog, just has you put the animal in a headlock for anything and everything, even to use a stethoscope. His exams are minimal at best. I am frustrated right now, as I adopted a second dog who brought kennel cough home with him. My other dog had been vaccinated for bordatella but seems to have contracted it anyways. Tight on funds with having just brought home a new dog, and they refuse to give me a cost estimate for the antibiotics and cough syrup, although they had no problem giving me cost estimates for antibiotics and pain medicine when I had him neutered there. (another clinic in the area was happy to do so for me) Instead, he sent me on a wild goose chase over town looking for over the counter cough syrup for my dog, which is not available anywhere. I went to green's feed petco, petsmart, pet supermarket, and discount pet supply and no one has ever heard of it. After all this, I am quite frustrated. I have spent hundreds of dollars on the last two visits, and with another dog will be spending hundreds more. This is not the way to keep patients. Dr. Riad does not seem to care about animals (I have heard from others that he is afraid of their dogs as well) and I do not understand why he is a vet. I ended up calling Kreature Komforts, where the staff was friendly and understanding and able to give me a cost estimate (I just don't want to get there and not have enough money!! I would have gone to the pawnshop if I had to, to take care of my babies, but needed an idea before hand!) and set up an appointment. I wouldn't recommend Dr. Riad to anyone. read more
