My experience with Nosh was disappointing. I ordered the short ribs. The dish was cold when it arrived. I should have sent it back, but it took long enough to get the food that I just wanted to eat and not wait some more. The meat itself was very fatty and not tasty. It was sitting in a bed of very liquidy "polenta" that had no taste. (It was supposed to be horseradish flavored, but I didn't taste that.) My wife did a little better with the steak frites. The steak was OK, but the fries were so heavily salted that she could only eat a few. The waitress and hostess were both nice, but the food wasn't worth the money we spent. read more

I've given Nosh every opportunity to impress me (having dined there at least three times) but nevertheless, I simply can't give them a good review. Each time I've visited, the place is overly crowded and the wait staff terribly annoyed. Service is slow, servers inattentive and the vibe of the place comes across as just negative. Then comes the food. I've tried both the burgers and the chicken sandwich. The former was served overdone and dry and the latter (ordered at my absolute last attempt to dine here) managed to be both burned on the outside and raw in the center. Seriously. Raw chicken. In a charred batter. Ugh. I always want to support the local food scene and I did have a great experience with the bartender the last time i visited (don't recall his name but he was good enough to apologize profusely for the chicken disaster and not try to charge me for it) but I just can't get on the Nosh train. Went to Nosh last night for what was likely the last time. this mainstay, pretty much fixture, of the birth of the modern Portland food scene appears to have been bought and had its heart ripped out. all it's best and most creative menu items replaced by what can only be described as a corporate chefs take on what a Maine tourist might want, and a pale imitation of what the original nosh was meant to be. Great burger. Plenty of unique options as well as the basics for people wanting just a regular burger (which is what we got). We also ordered the salt and vinegar fires cause we had never run into this anywhere. We absolutely fell in love with the fries (we are big salt and vinegar chip lovers). They might not be for everyone but for those that love a tangy kick these will work for sure. Very laid back atmosphere and we sat right outside on the patio. Would definitely come back. read more

Back again, and still so very very good! On my latest visit I was as part of a group of ten people. I love Portland's many fine places to dine, but still consider it to be the land of the tiny restaurants. That Nosh could easily accommodate such a large party on a super busy Saturday is just amazing! We started off our feast with a large selection of Nosh's fries including the soon to be world famous bacon dusted fries. So much delicious balcony goodness in every bite! So good in fact, that the group consensus was that Nosh's bacon dusted fries are hands down the best fries to be had! Moving on to the main course, I had the Cassoulet Hoagie, which is exactly what it sounds like:rich duck confit,delicious sausage,tomato, and white beans all in a crusty roll from Southside Bakery! Unimpressed. I paid $11 for what? A pretzel roll with wayy too many veggies and 4 slices of paper thin pork? Excuse me, if I wanted a veggie laden sandwich, I would have gone.... well somewhere else. I was expecting porky goodness from this Maple pork special sandwich they had going on tonight. All I got and tasted? Ice berg, tomato, red onion, pickled cherry peppers and this oily but tasty greenish sauce. It took me awhile to find this pork under the piles of junk that is veggies on this sandwich. Also, their seared tuna app was tasty, light and fresh. But I could have gone without since I misread it and thought it was a sandwich (since it was the same price). Yeah, their fries are pretty tasty. Thick cut, crispy and a nice tang from the vinegar. But this place is way too hyped up for the prices. This isn't NYC. But then again, in NYC people wouldn't pay $11 for paper thin slices of pork and not complain about it. I saw 1 waitress for the entire dining area and 1 bartender? No host/hostess to greet upon arrival? With 5 bucks an order for fries (which would equate to what, 1.5 potatoes) I'm sure they can afford to hire more help. Overrated. Move along. read more

Nosh is basically Woody from Toy Story. The old toy tossed aside for the Buzz Lightyears of Central Provisions and Vinland. The coolness factor may be diminished, but Nosh is actually quite good and fills a niche. This niche is pure, no apologies, meat. Hi vegetarians and vegans, you guys are great, but this just won't be the right fit. I'm sure you could find something, but it won't be easy. Dieters beware as well. Nosh should pass out Lipitor at the exit. The restaurant isn't big, with half devoted to the long bar and half composed of closely spaced tables. You'll know your neighbor. The beer selection is eclectic and a perfect mix of local craft beers with others from afar. I just wish they showed the alcohol percentages. With so many less known beers on tap, one could easily have two 9% alcohol beers before driving home. That could be trouble. At 5:30 on a Thursday the restaurant was busy, but not totally full, and the bartender seemed overwhelmed. Service has been hit or miss in general. The menu consists primarily of daily specials, burgers, sandwiches, and "noshes." Think Man vs. Food. Like a giant burger flooded with cheese and creamy sauce in between two donuts. There's not many simple items at Nosh. It's a different type of menu. And I mean this as a compliment, because Nosh usually is delicious. Yesterday the wings were some of the biggest and meatiest I've ever seen. Butter poached, potato starch breaded and coated with crushed peanuts and thai chili sauce, these are a serious appetizer. The traditional cheese burger (perhaps the only traditional item on the menu) was huge and solid, with a slightly different flavor. Probably from the pork that's mixed with the beef. The more adventurous burgers are better. I didn't order them yesterday, but Nosh is known for their french fries. I don't enjoy the consistency of the bacon dusted, but the sea salt are delicious, especially with one of the sauces. So Nosh won't be for everyone. But for those looking for different draft beers and fun, creative dishes (that may lead you directly to Intermed), it's a strong pick. I've been a fan of Nosh since I admittedly saw it on Man vs. Food... I know, I know I'm "one of those", but the burgers are sooooo good! I believe they're beef and pork mixed and cooked one way only. I always get the Pig Burger (cheese burger with bacon) and seem to never be disappointed. My favorite fries are the salt and vinegar. Everything is very flavorful. Vegetarians beware- I'm not sure there are many options for you, but the fries alone are worth the trip. The service has always been perfectly fine when I've gone. They're not super over-the-top friendly, but they're attentive and genuine. I've tried the bacon dusted fries before and thought they were okay. When I went last week, my friend and I split them and they were soggy, sticky, and didn't have the same flavor I remembered. I probably won't be getting those ever again, but I will definitely be back for the burgers and the salt and vinegar fries! Good luck finding a table, but there is usually space at the bar if you don't mind. The servers are funny and very easy to talk to. I've never had a bad experience here. The fries - oh the fries - with some cilantro jalapeño sauce! Yes please! On my first visit I ordered the big Mack burger and the bartender couldn't believe I finished the whole thing - it was that tasty. The Sweet Spicy Bacon Cheeseburger was another winner as well. I liked the Mac and Cheese one and the Slab burger was pretty good too, but I don't quite remember that one as much. I like my burger meat. Sometimes there are too many ingredients and it takes away from the burger meat - I think that's what happened with the Slab - don't get me wrong it was still good, but I want to taste my burger meat. Give NOSH a try, especially if you're a burger person. And if you're not! My vegetarian friend absolutely loved the pesto flatbread! He actually wanted to go back to NOSH for it. The restaurant we wanted to go to had a long wait so we went across the street to Nosh. Glad we did! The guacamole crunch burger was soooooooo tasty! I substituted it with the vegetarian burger and it also tasted like the real thing. So much flavor in this burger with the tortilla, guacamole and mushroom veggie burger. My boyfriend had the Big Mack! The sauce was spot on from the real thing. The pickles seriously tasted like McDonald's! And can we talk about the salt and vinegar fries! I could eat them all day! Disappointing cheese burger. Not juicy or particularly impressive in any way. Bacon dust French fries had good crunch but otherwise can't tell there's any bacon flavor. Gochujang sauce wasn't spicy at all and overpoweringly sweet. Mac and cheese was way too sweet from the bbq sauce and it was so incredibly greasy. Overall very uninspiring place to eat. We stepped into Nosh during our trip around the Portland area so it was not a very long period of time that was spent here but the amount that we were was not all that enjoyable. The part that I was impressed with here is the magically delicious bacon dusted fries with two dipping sauces with them. They were absolutely to DIE for. Nosh has been a place that I've seen all throughout my friend's snapchat stories, and hoopla, I finally got around to trying it out. I walked in and was greeted and seated, and my first impression of this place was, woah this is kinda small, yet cozy and damn it smells good. Interior design is very comfortable looking out towards the streets of Portland. A very cozy place, although tables and seats are often too close to one another. The table next to us was only about 10 inches away from us so privacy is hard to do. As for food, I ordered the mac and stack, which uses fried mac and cheese substituting for the patty buns AND BOY WAS THE MAC AND CHEESE GOOD. The burger itself was alright. I also got the salt and pepper fries and their fries are extremely good. I was surprised to see that they have such a wide range of dipping sauces and fry flavors!? I got the jalapeno mayo sauce to dip my fries in and it was such a pleasure. The only thing I have to say is Nosh is pricey. I paid $22 for a burger and some fries, and to me, I wasn't sure if it was entirely worth it. The fries were good and I would go again for the fries, but the burgers, I'm not sure. I've only been here once, late on a Sunday evening when nothing else was open... but it was effing DELICIOUS! Our server was phenomenal at explaining this 'hipster' menu and accommodating my food needs. The food was: AAAAAAA-MAZING. My "Crispy Tuna Tataki" 'sandwich' (see the photo I uploaded) was very tasty. Light and super savory. It combined things I love: seared tuna, avocado, tomatoes... mmmmmm My dining companion ordered the "Nosh MAC 'N Stack" and he claims that it was like nothing he'd ever had before. Creative genius. The service was great - really friendly and prompt. We had the cheeseburgers which were nice, but not spectacular. The chips (fries) WERE absolutely spectacular. The burgers come in assorted combinations like someone who spends too much time at the vintage store - lots of flavor and tone, if not neatly packaged. They feature a nice draft list including Bissell Brothers. One comment about kids. The Yelp listing says Nosh is not good for kids. We stopped by for an early dinner (4:30) and had no problems except that only the tables in the front really work with the high chair they provide. No 'kids' meal but plenty for them to 'nosh' on. Overall I was mostly satisfied here, although I happen to have a very comparable restaurant where I live in Rhode Island, Chomp - at least from my experience during this visit, Chomp has earned the five stars where I only give Nosh four. Nosh gets my "best burger" award. Something about their pork/beef blend creates the juiciest, most delicious burger I've had in a long time. The bacon dusted french fries are an original take on a classic and will make your mouth water. If you want to try something completely different, the mac n' cheese burger is fun. That's not the name of it, but you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it on the menu. In lieu of a bun, they sandwich the meat with two deep fried mac n' cheese patties. The one thing I don't love is how close the tables are together. You won't be having any top secret conversations here.There is a bench side and a chair side to each table. Serious beer selection at this place, mostly local from Maine with stuff you've likely not heard of. A large selection of local bottled beers. The Zoes Beer from the Maine Brewing Company, the 1/2 Idjit Imperial Porter by Dugges and the Triple Bag from Long Trail were all excellent in their own rights. Given it was a cold January day; the thick and filling brews were perfect. My buddy ordered the "Nosh Burger" and enjoyed it tremendously. Both his and mine were cooked to perfect temperature at med-rare. My feeling is that the pork being used is too lean and detracts from the burgers juiciness. The texture of the meat is fine and holds together without problem. Bright sunshine fills the rectangular bar and seating area. Large windows allow for good people watching and the black slate bar is nice place for both food and drink. Professional service that is knowledgeable about the selection of beers and their individual qualities. Clean setting in the trendy new restaurant scene in Portland. I'm sticking with the Nosh Burger next time. read more

This is a great restaurant if you are hungry and want a satisfying meal, but it is honestly not a place I would ever go out of my way to visit. The sweet and spicy bacon cheeseburger is a solid choice. The reason for the average review is the place is overpriced. The fries also have to be ordered separately from the burgers/sandwiches. The interior of Nosh is very welcome and it's a great ambiance for groups.
