We have dined several times here and enjoyed it. But last night a couple of curious things happened. I ordered jambalaya and ten minutes later the waitperson came and announced they were out of it. This might be understandable if it were late in the evening but at 6pm? Later my wife ordered a latte coffee. A few minutes later our waitperson came to inform us that they had run out of milk! Trade Joes is a block away and could have solved this dilemma I think. So I wonder if Not Your Average Joes is perhaps becoming below average? read more

We went there for happy hour and 1$ oyster special on Wednesdays. The bar and overall atmosphere is nice, good beer selection and one of the few larger bars around. Happy hour is decent but very limited. I ate at NYAJ before, they make a big fuss about 'real cooking' but the quality is like an average sports bars. read more

Recently had lunch in NYA Joe's. Food was OK - but nothing special. Menu items are all very pricey for what you get. Highlight was the complimentary focaccia bread. Lowlight was the server; I won't mention name; perhaps she was just having a bad day. Could have cared less about waiting on us, as we didn't order alcoholic drinks to beef up the bill - and her tip. Never once came by the table to check on us after we received our food - which was brought to the table by a food runner. Dropped the check off before we even requested it; never even asking if we wanted to order desert (which we did!) All I know is that I have absolutely no desire to return - nor would I ever recommend the place to anyone. Too many other choices in the area - all of which, in my opinion, are so much better. read more

On Saturday, May 15, 2021, my wife and I received unacceptable treatment at Not Your Average Joe's in Suburban Square. We will never go back there again. We arrived at 3 PM. It was a nice day, and this was one of the first weekends after the pandemic began that we felt we could go out for meals. Upon arrival, we found at least a dozen tables outside both on the sidewalk level and on the balcony level that were unoccupied. When we went into the restaurant to asked to be seated, we specified that we wanted to be seated outside. The hostess said that she would be happy to seat us inside, but said that all the tables outside were reserved. These tables were in different locations both on the balcony and on the sidewalk level. They were not grouped as if to receive a party. We find it highly unlikely that a dozen different groups made reservations for a meal at 3 PM on a Saturday. Further, while we were speaking to the hostess, a gentleman came, spoke to a different hostess, and was seated at a table for four. There were tables for two available outside the restaurant at that time.It was very clear that he was not being joined by any other people. He was given a menu and was clearly getting ready to order. We had been to the restaurant several times before the pandemic and were treated well. I was dressed in a collared shirt, jeans and sneakers, and my wife was similarly attired-as were all of the diners we saw there. My wife and I noticed that we were at least 20 years older than any of the parties seated outside of the restaurant. It is hard to believe that all outside tables were reserved when that single individual-who appeared to be in his late twenties- came up when we did, but spoke to a different hostess, and was immediately seated. I don't know how to understand it except for it to be an instance of age discrimination. I doubt that this conduct would be tolerated were it not acceptable company policy. I will make it known to those with whom I communicate that Not Your Average Joe's discriminates-or condones those who do. read more

My friend and I went there after visiting the apple store to get some dinner. When we were finally sat it was at an awkward table that was extremely too close to the other tables. When the people at the table next to us got in and out I had to move over so they could. We sat for about 10 minutes before a server, who wasn't ours, came over and asked if we'd been helped yet. When we told her no she took it upon herself to take our drink and appetizer order herself which was nice! A few minutes later our server finally came over. When our appetizers came out they were SO good! ( nachos and egg rolls) we then ordered entrees which were also very good. Throughout our meal we were consistently looking for our waitress who didn't attend to us very often. She never asked if we wanted drink refills when she saw the drinks were empty or asked how the food was. I'll definitely go back for the food but will probably sit at the bar next time UPDATE: I came here tonight with my boyfriend and everything was great! Our server was extremely friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and came out very promptly. The food runner was also extremely nice and had a great personality. This hip restaurant/bar hybrid is as good as it gets. The meal began with our friendly waiter delivering us freshly baked bread with some cheese and olive oil dip. I'm not a huge fan of cheese so I wasn't a fan of the dip, but, the bread was fantastic. The reason I'm giving NYAJ's 5 stars is how they treated my brother. He is extremely sensitive to a lot of food (especially gluten and dairy), is flat out allergic to peanuts, and to make matters better, is extremely picky because he has special needs. And upon telling our waiter that, she was super helpful, bringing out gluten free bread and giving us great suggestions. And even when we forgot to note his dairy insensitivity, which ruled his mashed potatoes out, she quickly brought out another side he loved without blinking. It is remarkably rare to find a restaurant operate which as much care and understanding as NYAJ's and they delivered big time. I could talk about how the food was great and all but I've always been a strong believer that the best places are always ran by the best people -- nothing else matters if the people matters. NYAJ delivered and gave my brother a great meal, which is rare in my world, and for that I'm giving them five stars. read more

The name says more than you think: While the restaurant might be Joes, and he might be above average, the restaurant (except the above average marquee outside seating), food, beverages and service are all average to below average. This isn't the first visit, given its location and its reputation it confounds that on two visits this restaurant consistently delivered poorly plated and presented Sysco specialities with indifference. Stumbled upon Not Your Average Joe's while browsing Yelp for a new restaurant nearby to try. I had no idea NTAJ was located in suburban square. The second level outdoor dining is unexpected but was definitely nice to be outside on a summer night. Ordered the watermelon sangria which was really refreshing. The bread and oil served is deadly..seriously addicting stuff! We started with ahi tuna wontons-not what we expected. They came out almost as deconstructed nachos, but very tasty. For entrees we had scallops(highly recommend) and a steak & potato meal, which was also good. Passed on dessert. A nice option when avoiding the city bustle. read more

Really stoked about this place. Have only sat at the bar (at least five times), so I can't speak about table service, but everyone behind the bar is AWESOME. Marta always remembers my husband and I, and she's great at her job. On one occasion we were enjoying Michael's company and asked him for a recommendation - he suggested that my husband try the Mona Lisa salad (he's the kind of guy who throws tantrums over salads). Michael's recommendation was so spot-on that we ask for his opinion whenever he's working. Food is exceptional, especially for the area. Reminds me of Christopher's in Wayne. Friendly staff and darn good food. I'd also like to note that their menu is flexible for vegetarians and gluten free folk. Happy hour here goes till 7 and the specials are great. Very average experience. This visit was my second. I enjoyed my first although I thought the food could have been a little better, it was just ok. I wanted to go back because I saw a lot of other items on the menu I wanted to try. This visit. I really like the atmosphere. The music choices and volume was great. And I love the movie trailers. Our table was not very comfortable as were put in the bar but stuck at the end of a booth. Our server, Devon was very, very nice and very personable. Service was pretty slow, both for food and for drinks. Our appetizer took a while and arrived about a minute before our entrees. I enjoyed the dumplings as an appetizer. NYAJ is my go to restaurant. I have some food allergies (vegetable oil and sunflower oil) and they are the place I know I can feel safe and accommodated. AND this week I feel like I moved in! We ate at NYAJ's twice in the past 4 days! While we have always been more than pleased with the quality of the service, our server this week was over the top. Her name is April. She was not only attentive to our requests, she anticipated what we needed before we asked. I had the goat cheese salad with grilled tuna. We went back tonight and I suggested I wanted the same thing and she remembered what alterations I had asked for. The raspberry dressing is delicious. Also, the brussel sprouts were amazing! I agree with others that the bread and the dipping oil (olive with garlic, chili and grated cheese) is hard to resist. read more

My husband and I wanted to go out on a date so we made a reservation at 8 pm; they had available reservations until 11:30. We got seated right away and the hostess tells us there's a 90 minute limit on how long you can stay, which is fine, we didn't plan on staying that long anyway. Our server brought us water and bread and dip, but never took our drink order until she came back to take our dinner order...also fine, but weird. My husband got his soup pretty quickly because well, it's soup, and takes about 10 seconds to put it in a bowl. We then waited at least a half hour for our main dishes, an Impossible burger and a rice/shrimp/chicken entree. During that time that we were waiting, one of the workers propped the front doors open for about 15 minutes so that he could carry the heaters in from outside. There was a cold ass breeze coming through the restaurant that whole time. At that point it seemed like they were trying to make us uncomfortable so we would leave. Our food finally came and it was good, hence the 2 stars. We asked a guy, who came to our table to ask if we needed anything else, for the check which he subsequently brought to us AND STOOD RIGHT AT OUR TABLE UNTIL WE PAID IT THROUGH THE APP. Rude. Once we told him it was done, our server walked by and he let her know that we paid and the two of them cleared our entire table in a matter of seconds, only leaving behind the rest of my husband's beer...I wasn't done picking at my fries. There were still at least 7 other tables of people there, it's not like we were the last ones lingering around late night. Anyway, not a great experience, probably won't return there anytime soon. read more

I don't know if I just ordered wrong or the food is actually that sub-par. I've been to other NYAJ locations and always had great experiences, but I found the food here to be very bland and underwhelming. I took maybe three bites total. Stars for the service, though. My girlfriend and I decided to try the place since we live right around the block. We made a reservation, good thing we did since the place was packed. There was not an empty seat at the bar area. There was a ton of staff near the front to greet you and a bunch of runners taking patrons to their tables. We were escorted to the 2nd floor area with a great look over the main floor along with the large projection screen, the wood-fired oven/pizza area, and a slight glimpse into the kitchen. The waitress came by extremely quickly and continued this trend throughout the meal, especially as I kept drinking all of my water. We decided to order some of the basics to give them a try for our first time. We ordered the onion soup, cheesesteak eggrolls, nachos, and a burger. To our surprise all the food was brought to us at once which was a bit overwhelming but worked out well since we were sharing everything and we able to move plates back and forth to each other. The soup was great! My gf loves the broth and the cheese (she isn't a big fan of the onions) she devoured it for the most part before I was able to give it a taste and it was on point. The nachos were flavorful with chicken and cheese on every chip - it was nice to finish the top row and not just be left with chips without any cheese or meat left. The eggrolls were solid, loved the mustard on the plate, just wish there was a little more, but the meat was very tasty. The burger was great as well, but the fries stole the show for me. The staff was great, food was great, environment was great, and it's right around the corner from us. We will be back a lot! Definitely worth a try! read more

Dined at Not Your Average Joe's last night and had so much fun! We were a table of four and got seated fairly quickly. The space was once a movie theatre, and they show old movie clips which can be seen from both floors. I think this is such a great tribute. Each floor has large bars along with ample amounts of seating. Every table starts with homemade onion focaccia bread and this yummy cheesy dipping oil. Between the four of us we had a burger, pizza, enchiladas and steak tips. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Presentation was pleasant and what needed to be, was cooked to order. Service was excellent as well. They definitely had plenty of people working, without interfering with your dining experience. Everything was reasonably priced, including the drinks. Great addition to Suburban Square. I hope more options like this come to the shopping center. Tip: Try their maple roasted brussel sprouts... AHhhmazing read more

Went there for the first time during happy hour and really enjoyed the food, service, and atmosphere. The happy hour specials weren't extensive or anything special, but the drinks and food were great. We ordered the wings, nachos, and the sliders to share and thought they tasted better than average! Our bartender was nice and fast. The only reason for the four stars is because of the foul-mouthed, loud, and obnoxious man sitting at the bar near us. It would've been nice if a staff member would've have told him to keep it down. Many other people around the bar kept looking at him and it was uncomfortable. It shouldn't be up to a fellow patron to say anything to him. I get it is the main line and some folks are obnoxious and elitist, but this was not necessary and hampered the experience. read more

Grilled Cheese is great. The focaccia bread they serve as an appetizer is the best and I sometimes eat loaves of it at a time. They sometimes have the football games playing on the big screen, as well as a few TVs near the bar. My husband and I had the good fortune to try out NYAJ's during the soft opening. Even though the servers were new and the kinks were supposedly getting "worked out", everything was phenomenal. Service was top-notch, and all our food was amazing. I wanted to order everything on the menu, but our choices (cheesesteak egg rolls, Waldorf salad, mustard-crusted chicken, and herb-crusted haddock) were delicious. I cannot rave about this place enough! I always suggest heading to NYAJ. It's a favorite spot to come with friends for happy hours or season specials. It's also a go-to for when my parents visit town. I have never had a bad meal here! Scallops, enchiladas, burgers, salad, pasta, we've had it all. Some personal favorites include: blackberry-pomegranate margarita, Mona Lisa salad, mustard-crusted chicken, and the nachos (where they put meat and cheese on each tortilla and then stack them so there's toppings on every chip). I also cannot write a review without mentioning the AMAZING bread they give you at the table. Most wonderful time of year my foot. They cancelled our 14 person holiday party 3 hours before our event...because they had a larger party last minute. This is after we had scheduled at least four events there in the last year. On several occasions we offered to put a deposit and was told, "No worries, deposit not required." Very disappointing. Fun decor, good location, and old movie clips on a loop projected onto the wall. Came here for lunch with another adult and three kids, varying in ages from 3-11. The kids' meals are not cheap, but the food was good. They had pasta and grilled cheese. I had the adult grilled cheese with tomato soup, and I pretty much licked the plate clean. The sandwich was cheesy and appropriately crispy, with a very tasty little cup of tomato basil soup to dunk into. Yum. My cohort had a grilled chicken sandwich, which she loved, along with a pile of slightly greasy but yet delicious fries. She's gluten-free and was very happy with the bread and oil combo that you get before the meal, since they offered her a separate bowl to dip into in order to avoid cross-contamination (and of course, a gluten-free selection of breads and rolls). For someone with celiac, who's not just on a fad diet and actually needs to avoid gluten for health reasons, this was totally a plus. My only beef with the place was that they delivered bowls of vanilla ice cream to the kids, without us having finished our meals. We hadn't even ordered it. After setting down the bowls, she said that vanilla was the only option for that day. This seemed strange, considering we hadn't even asked for dessert and most of us were still eating lunch. Suffice it to say, the kids were completely distracted by the melting ice cream and didn't finish their lunches (to the chagrin of both parents). The dessert was included in the price of the kids' meals. The check was also delivered before we had finished, though once again we hadn't asked for it and it was inconceivably early, despite the half-empty dining room. If there were throngs of people three deep at the bar, I could understand the hustle. But no one was waiting and there were a bunch of tables with no patrons. Other than the minor transgressions of our waitress, I enjoyed the food and atmosphere and would go again. read more

literally a BELOW AVERAGE EXPERIENCE. I loved the seating but my friend ordered a pepperoni pizza and it took 1 hour and 30 minutes no joke. The waitress kept apologizing and was really nice but we were starving and my other friend and I both got dishes that ended up being terrible. My friend is allergic to gluten and simply requested that they don't put a bun on her burger. They still did. The pasta I ordered was cold and undercooked, with a gross sauce. I could have made Annie's Mac in 15 minutes that tasted better than this. I'm not trying to be harsh but this was so disappointing. After LItERALLY an hour and a half my friend got her pepperoni pizza and it was as thin as a piece of paper and had barely ANY cheese, which they tried to conceal with way too many pieces of pepperoni covering it. It was also undercooked. After all this, the waiter (who was a queen), talked to the manager and said she could give us a free dessert. This is so disrespectful. We did not want to wait another 45 minutes for a half-a**ed dessert that was half the price of her 14 dollar pizza. We politely declined so the waiter asked her manager again and came back, telling us there was "nothing else they could do." Why couldn't they just give us the pizza for free? I swear it was crazy to me that they have such little respect for paying customers who waited through what turned out to be a 4 hour dinner for a tiny crappy meal and now have to pay full price for it. The manager did not even apologize. A similar situation happened last time i came to NYAJ and so now I've decided I will never give them my business again. Bye. read more

Our waiter was amazing (Michael). He was very attentive and pleasant. They really need to support their wait staff with cleaning tables to increase turnover time. We waited over 30 minutes for a table but Michael made up for it with his attention to our needs. More like a 4.5 I love this place, the inside is very nicely designed and super modern and hip. I love that they play old movie trailers to kind of pay homage to the fact that the building was once a movie theater. The menu is a good size not small but not huge and they have very unique spins on the same old restaurant fair (burgers, pizza, sandwiches, salads) , the drink menu is varied ,plenty for everyone including those who don't drink alcohol (try the baby peach bellini) and in my experience the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. the place is great for those who are gluten free btw! I went here with a GF friend who loved that they had a full menu for her dietary needs and i was very happy to see that when the waiter brought out complimentary freshly baked bread and hot pepper/Parmesan dipping oil for me, he brought out gluten free bread for her as well without even needing to be asked. The prices are a little high but when you look at the uniqueness of the meal you're getting and the quality of it , it seems fine. I got an almond goat cheese side salad that came with a delicious raspberry vinaigrette and candied pecans. The size was just right and it was one of the most delicious things i have ever tasted. As an entree i got the grilled cheese which was just what you want a grilled cheese to be but with grown up flavors. my dining partner treated me to dessert as well and i tried the key lime pie which was mouth puckering delicious. I could not have been happier. My friend got the pork shank served over gouda polenta and we watched in awe as she just pulled the bone out like it was butter and that polenta! perfect!
