Seated right away , our wait server asked if we were gluten free and I asked for water with lemon. We received water and never saw them again . No bread, no drink order no straws or lemon. I'm a taco fiend, I love them in a house, I love them with a mouse, you get the point. Anyway, the tacos here were not really up to my rather easy standard. They were very flavorful, but pretty much empty. Two tortillas, nice sauce, zero filling. So why am I giving Joes such a stellar review if I didn't like the tacos? Simple, the waitress (Ashley I believe) noticed we were not exactly impressed. I'm not a complainer, so we didn't really say anything we just ate our salad (the Mona Lisa, it's really good!). Ashley asked us what we thought of the tacos as they are still testing them out on the menu I think she saw we were not happy. We told her the flavor was good, but the tacos were pretty much empty. Ashley apologized, went to the manager and took the cost off our bill entirely. Dan brought out her very own GF bread -- she felt so special because we were just at Bertuccis yesterday and they didnt have anything like that to offer. ***They were so fluffy and yummy BTW** I was EXTREMELY pleased to see they had their very own GLUTEN FREE Menu! A succinct statement about Not your Average Joes: extremely overpriced for the quality and quantity of food the diner receives. There is not point to eat here. First of all, when we walked in the entire front of the house was in the back. It took 5 minutes to be acknowledged. Honestly, I could care less, I'm not the pope, but the other people waiting DID care. Customers want to be acknowledged, especially when the entire restaurant is empty. Secondly, we ordered a cheeseburger with spinach which was $15 and a side of fries which was $5 for a total of $20. The cheeseburger was ultra small, the lettuce had a brown hue, and most unnerving, the "side" of spinach was literally three pieces of bland, unseasoned spinach. This is not a "side" of spinach by any stretch of the imagination, and we honestly thought it was a decoration. Why on earth is this $15? The shoe string French fries were also poor in quantity. Super food, excellent service, enjoyable meal. After reading some positive reviews and a negative one I decided to stop in and try not your average Joe to see what was not so average. I have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable meals I've had in a while. The food was flavorful and interesting in presentation, and fresh. The restaurant was bright and roomy which made it welcoming. The service was very good and the attention to customer satisfaction exceeded the norm at many restaurants these days. I look forward to stopping it again soon. I was intrigued by the crab cakes and started with that as an appetizer. The two crabcakes were nicely crispy on the outside with bountiful crab inside. It came with a light citrus remoulade and a side of Arugula that was surprisingly tasty in a bite with the crab. A side salad came with a tangy buttermilk horseradish dressing that had a nice flavor balance, not overly spicy or hot. Crisp and soft focaccia came gratis with a wonderful blend of cheese, oil and pepper flakes. I Couldn't get enough but resisted seconds. The dip was not overly spiced for my wife who isn't a spice fan, but spicy enough for me who is. The first entree started with a nice sized portion of salmon that was pan seared with a medium char with just salt and pepper but it had such a wonderful flavor, probably from the oil. It was topped with a sage pecan pesto sauce with a side of green beans instead of the normal Brussel sprouts and a slightly spicy mashed sweet potato that was a nice complement to the salmon. The second Entre was sirloin tips with green beans and rosemary carrots. I must say that the carrots were some of the best I've ever had and I would probably order them even though I normally would not. The steak tips had a Montreal type steak seasoning to them and were cooked well to a medium temperature. When cut across the grain the texture was cut but any other cut was a little chewy. As good as the food was the service was even better. Everyone that came to the table was attentive to our needs, respond quickly with whatever we needed, and went over the top to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. This is the place that got me into putting corn on pizza. All their food is scratch made, which I've come to not expect from chain restaurants. But their food is impressive, by all means. Typically come here for pizza. I frequently build my own pizza with corn, bacon and spinach. The sweetness of the corn pulls the whole pie together. Their appetizers are all exceptional. The bread starter is, well, bread. However, it's fresh baked, so I eat a ton of it. Their New England Clam Chowder is surprisingly good. Most chains take a very conventional approach but their chowder broth is thick and full of herbs. A great starter. read more

On the negative side the food was just lousy. Chicken parm was served lukewarm at best and looked like it had been sitting around a while. We had it reheated but it wasn't much better when it came back. My chicken caprese sandwich ciabatta bread was cold and chewy not crunchy, warm and grilled. The chicken was barely warm. I loveeee Not Your Average Joe's. I've got to many of their locations and always enjoyed their food and service. Sadly, this trip was extremely disappointing. Our waitress was slow in getting our drink orders, food orders and refilling our waters. Our food came and it was almost cold. My steak tips were cooked well when I asked them to be medium rare and my mashed potatoes were almost hard. My friends pasta dish was almost cold as well. I was very disappointed in this visit and I hope this is turned around because I love NYAJ! Update: after posing this, I received a message and a gift card in the mail for my meal. We used the gift card tonight and all was right with the world! I was craving a grilled cheese and tomato soup and while the grilled cheese was technically on the kids menu, I still got a decent portion. I can't believe how long it took to get our food, get water refills, we had to ask for the bread...... maybe it would've been worth the wait of the food was good, but wow was it bad. Our waitress was super accommodating making sure everything came out fast, which I truly appreciated! We got the tuna wontons which I can not say enough good things about and the lettuce wraps. I came here once while staying at a nearby hotel. The great thing about this restaurant is just walking through the door your feel the warmth from not only the heater but from the smile on their faces... on to the breakdown. The Décor: Nothing really stood out to me. It was the classic modern take on a typical family restaurant. I found the colors neutral yet inviting and the flow of the room seemed to help the functionality. I felt comfortable and welcomed from the moment I walked in which is really important when you're traveling. Service: Sadly, I sat at the bar so my view of the service might be a little different then others. But the bartenders were awesome. Katie or Kate, I think that was her name, was very friendly and even had nice suggestions on what to order. Another plus was that I never felt presser to order a drink. Being that I was working and have very strict rules on when I can consume alcohol, I hate when bartenders try to repeatedly ask you if you want a drink. Almost as if they're trying to wear down your resolve. I had only my food and water and she was still as attentive to me as if I had been slamming down shots all night. Which for a bartender point of view meant she has EXCELLENT customer service. Really that chick needs to be made bar manager or something. Food: Another bright spot in the evening. I really enjoyed my pizza and really have no complaints. The crust as thin and very tasty, the only criticism that I can give is maybe it could crisper, the sauce was just the right amount and the toppings were on point. Not as good as the one on Burlington Mass. I've been here a couple of times, and the friendliness that we always get from the staff at Burlington is really missing at this one. It's unfortunate - The Burlington location is a couple of hours away from where we live so we only get there once or twice a year, and this one is 15 minutes from my job. However, the service (or lack of) makes me inclined to go elsewhere. The food is excellent and creative. I can't say enough good things about it. 2nd day living in Rhode island and literally stumbled upon this place, only to find out we came on GRAND OPENING NIGHT! We were instantly greeted by two young ladies at the hostess counter and taken to a cozy booth seated off centered to the open kitchen. We were quickly greeted by our waiter, Nick. He was a cool, energetic guy who knew the menu very well. Nick came with this homenade bread and some dipping concoction that i was unfamiliar with but he poured olive oil on top and stirred it up. After tasting that, i felt like i was in for a treat. We decided to get the buffalo chicken strips for an appetizer. They were probably the best chicken strips i have tasted in a while. They were not greasy, full of breading or covered in franks red hot. Lol the chicken was very moist and it came with a little side of mango salsa. check out the pic i posted for quanity. Our entree's were: Smokehouse jumbalaya, mediterranean turkey kabob, and hamburger kids meal for the little homie, JJ. The jumbalaya is what i ordered. All fresh ingredients. If you dont like spicy, you could handle this. It has a smokey taste from the sausage and a lot of new orleans flavor. A very hearty meal for the cold weather. I would get it again. Im not going to critique everyone elses meal since i only had 1 bite. My wife ordered the créme brûlée cheesecake. She says it is the reason for the 5 stars. Lol. One of my favorite dinner places... I don't know if its their fresh bread and garlic oil.or the bottomless lime rickeys (amazing!!!). They have a wide array of dinner choices from salmon to chicken to pizza and meatloaf. Definitely must try the maple brussel sprouts!! The ambiance is quaint with cathedral ceilings and wood work. Impressed. This is a chain in the area and it was delicious. I had the nachos with chicken and I couldn't eat it fast enough. Perfect proportions of shredded Chicken, layered on the nachos which were these large circular pieces, fresh ingredients, tasty,filling...Also much easier to eat than regular nachos. The corn avocado salad on the side was yummy! I also ordered the New England clam chowder that also very fresh with lots of clam pieces and potato. Been to Not Your Average Joe's a few times now. They have a nice bar along the left side where you can grab a beverage or stay for a meal. There are an assortment of booths and tables inside and an outdoor patio. My last visit was on a Thursday night at about 7:30 and I was surprised to find there was a wait for a table. We found a seat at the bar while we waited. We were not in a rush, and the bartenders were busy so we didn't get a beverage for quite a while, not that we minded at all, just have patience and they will get to you as soon as they can. Our table was called shortly after we got our drinks. Bread is placed on the table along with a bowl of olive oil, grated cheese and hot pepper flakes. The bread has a nice crust and is soft in the middle. Moist enough that you don't need to dip it in the oil, but soft enough that it makes for good dipping. Our menu's were sticky and needed a serious wipe down. You could clearly see food between the pages and on the single page drink menu place on the table. I have tried a different item each visit and most have been nice.The menu seems to change each time I visit. I feel this restaurant has a lot of potential, but something is always just a little off. I started with a salad of mixed greens, almond crusted goat cheese and raspberry which was nice. They offer it in a 'dinner' size, but I'm not sure it would satisfy as a dinner - for me any way. The salad was placed on the table, but no silverware was presented. We waited a while, the waiter passed by a couple of times and eventually we asked for a fork. Next I had the grilled cheese with tomato soup. There was something about the soup that just wasn't 'right' for me. It is a cream of tomato soup, with lots of basil, which I love, but there was some taste in there that was 'off'. Maybe it's the stock base? The menu doesn't specify ingredients. The grilled cheese was nice and melty with a smoky Gouda which was lovely. The menu states the sandwich comes with mustard and apple. The mustard was overwhelming, even against the smoky cheese and I couldn't tell it there were any apples in there but there was a small portion on the plate as a garnish. On another occasion I had a Turkey burger which was quite nice. Turkey burgers are naturally dry and the addition of tatziki sauce helps make it moist and easy to eat. There are several beer on tap and a full bar. The menu offers a variety of salads, appetizers, seafood, chicken and steak with influences from Asian, Italian and American flavors. The title, the menu and the presentation of everything they serve makes this place look like a very unique chain restaurant. Sadly, I have to report, Joe's is kind of average. The drinks were overpriced for the size, and weren't really anything special. The cocktail menu had lovely descriptions but they didn't deliver. I had the maple bourbon manhattan and it wasn't really maple-y at all. It didn't seem like anything was mixed in and it really just tasted like bourbon on the rocks. The bread though, fantastic! The stuff is really hard to stop eating. Our table went through three baskets. It's a soft, doughy bread with a hard crust, and you're provided with a really delicious olive oil dip with cheeses and herbs. Most of the apps were good, but some were hard to eat. When I ordered the pretzel bites, I was expecting a soft pretzel "bread," not a cracker-like thing. It was too big for one bite but I couldn't cut it into 2. The presentation was great and the toppings worked great together... I just wish they all fit in my mouth at the same time. The steak tostada was easier to eat, but kind of bland. For my entree I ordered the harvest mac n' cheese, because it sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, it was extremely bland and hardly cheesy. Eh... after quite a bit of hype, I finally stopped by Not Your Average Joe's for some appetizers and drinks with a friend. We tried the Buffalo-Caribbean chicken tenders, which were actually pretty good, and a nice, slightly sweet twist on Buffalo chicken. We also tried the chicken quesadilla which was seriously nothing special. I'm not sure how you can make a quesadilla quite that forgettable, but that's really what it was. Neither of us where jumping at the chance to finish it off. We didn't delve too far into the menu, but based on our experience so far, I'd say it's Not Your Average Joe's because it's actually BELOW average, not the other way around. Even though half our order was pretty tasty, it was nothing that blew us away. I'd head to Fat Belly's next door instead of Joe's in the future. read more

After my very average experience here last time, a representative from NYAJ reached out to me to make things right. I returned to the location due to this, and had a great visit! Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. I ordered my go to dish, the chicken piccata, and my SO ordered the mustard crusted chicken BLT (or something like that). Both were great and came out very promptly for a busy Friday night. I also got a pomegranate martini, which was wonderful and fairly priced. Also, I can't say this enough: USE. THEIR. APP. On top of rewards, the reservations are a game changer. Why wait upwards of 40 minutes on a busy night when you can just log in and make a reservation? I did it literally from the parking lot of the restaurant, and they will always honor the reservation. Ended up being seated, eating, and paying before people that had been there before us were even seated. Will be returning! read more
